Problem in updating relationships - Oracle Design Editor

Hello
I am using the tool Oracle Design Editor of the Oracle suite Desginer for ERD modeling.
I'm having trouble updating the changes in primary keys of tables in their relationships children (FK), is not updating. When I delete a primary key field, the table has the reference field is not being deleted.
This is a software failure or is a normal behavior?
Someone could help me.

I'd love to try this out and see what really happens, so I can give you the absolutely correct answer. Unfortunately, I've been snowed in and haven't been in the office all week, and I don't have Designer on the home computer on which I'm typing this.
My guess from faulty memory is that if you delete a column from a multi-column PK, Designer will remove the column from the FK constraints that reference it, but will not remove the corresponding column from the related tables. After all, Designer doesn't know that this column is ONLY used as part of an FK. As far as it knows, you may need that column for some other purpose.
Let me give you two hints about the way Designer was designed to work that may clarify this:
First of all, Designer has an Entity/Relationship diagrammer that works on the logical design level - modeling Entities rather than Tables, and Relationships rather than Foreign Keys. It was expected by the creators of the tool that you would do most of your design in the ER diagrams, then use the Database Design Transformer (DDT) to translate that design to the Table Definitions of your physical design. In the E/R diagrammer, you can designate key attributes (attributes become your columns), but you don't have to. DDT will create key columns for you when it translates your logical design to a physical one.
Secondly, Designer expects that most of your primary keys will be surrogate primary keys that are single columns set from Oracle Sequences. There are many advantages to using surrogate keys for PKs and FKs, while natural keys are used only for unique keys. One of the advantages is that surrogate keys are non-updatable, which will greatly reduce the chore of maintaining foreign keys. If you do a web search, you will see a lot of discussion of the pros and cons of surrogate PKs.

    has anyone come across this before? any ideas guys?

    I think this belongs in another forum, but could you answer this question: Are you trying to generate database creation scripts by select Create Oracle Database in the DB Admin tab of the Design Editor?

    I have a problem with Oracle Designer 10 version 9.0.4.7 installed in Windows 2000 platform.
    I don't know if the origin of the problem is at the server side or client side. I try to launch the repository reports but it doesn't work. The screen never appear. I have to finish the client process but the oracle session remmains:

  • Problem whit Update Operation, Error UPDATE_ROW_CONFLICT with Oracle DB

    Hello friends!, I have a problem whit UPDATE Operation with a Oracle DataBase, but it is rare because it works in "Java Sun Application Server" and not in Tomcat (5.5.12) , displaying the following error:
    "Error :Number of conflicts while synchronizing: 1 SyncResolver.UPDATE_ROW_CONFLICT row 5 values changed in database"
    part of the file log:

    New Info:
    System.out.println(" date created : "+ido_personsDataProvider.getValue("DATE_CREATED"));
    System.out.println(ido_personsDataProvider.getCachedRowSet().getMetaData().getColumnClassName(13));When these lines are printed in Java Sun Application Server for JSC show this:

    java.sql.Timestamp|#]
    When these lines are printed in Tomcat show this:
    date created : 2006-04-24
    java.sql.Timestamp
    Why? the values of this date is different in one or another server. Problem of driver JDBC? I use driver: to ojdbc14.jar, in Tomcat for the connection to the BD Oracle. Maybe this originates error UPDATE_ROW_CONFLICT...
    Please, any idea?

  • Problem with updating oracle DB with java date thru resultset.updateDate()

    URGENT Please
    I am facing problem in updating oracle database with java date through resultset.updateDate() method. Can anybody help me please
    following code is saving wrong date value (dec 4, 2006 instead of java date jul 4, 2007) in database:
    ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT myDate FROM myTable");
    rs.first();
    SimpleDateFormat sqlFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-mm-dd");
    java.util.Date myDate = new Date();
    rs.updateDate("myDate", java.sql.Date.valueOf(sqlFormat.format(myDate)));
    rs.updateRow();

    I believe you should use yyyy-MM-dd instead of yyyy-mm-dd. I think MM stands for month while mm stands for minute as per
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/text/SimpleDateFormat.html
    (If this works, after spending so much of your time trying to solve it, don't hit yourself in the head too hard. I find running out of the room laughing hysterically feels better).
    Here is a more standard(?) way of updating:
    String sqlStatement=
    "update myTable set myDate=? where personID=?"
    PreparedStatement p1= connection.prepareStatement(sqlStatement);
    p1.setDate(1,new java.sqlDate());
    p1.setInt(2, personID);
    p1.executeUpdate();

  • Oracle Designer Collection problem

    Hi all,
    this is my first post in this forum, but I've been using it a lot and I'd like to thank everyone that have always helped me through their posts.
    Now I have come to a problem to which I can't find a solution...
    My problem is the following:
    My goal is to import a data model. To do this I have to create certain objects in Oracle Designer, prior to importing the model itself. The reason for this is that if this certain object isn't created, the import itself fails on a given table.
    More objectively, the object I'm trying to create in the "Server model" in the "Oracle Collection Type" is a VARRAY of 999999 elements of RAW(2000).
    When I try to create this object, I get the following error:

    This error is on Designer 9.0.2.10 and on Oracle 9.2.0.7 database
    If I try the same thing on Designer 10.1.2.4 and on Oracle 10.2.0.1, I get the following:

    If anyone could shed some light on this, it would be much appreciated.
    Best regards to all of you,

    Hi Michael. Thank you for your reply.
    Nevertheless, I think that what you say is not correct since I can create a VARRAY of NUMBER datatype; the only thing I can't create is a VARRAY of RAW datatype.
    Can you, or anyone, comment on this?
    Thank you.

  • Problem logging into Oracle Designer 10G

    Hello developers,
    I've downloaded and installed Oracle Designer 10G on my computer. I've installed it using the installation wizard. I wanted to login. I have my username and password but not the connect string. I don't know what my connect string is now.
    During the installation, I've encountered such a message:
    Oracle Designer and Oracle8i client import and export tools need to be installed into different Oracle homes. You can use the LOCAL and TNS_ADMIN registry variables(set under both Oracle Homes in the registry) to save having to maintain multiple copies of your TNSNAMES.ORA file. Please enter any information you wish to be set and click OK to continue."
    So under this message, a default entry of "C:\orant\net80\admin" appears whilst for field Local, I've entered "orahome" which I assume to be my database alias.
    Later on, I found out about 10G so I removed the copy of 6i I've installed using Universal Installer and proceeded to download and install 10G. Now the error message Im getting when I tried to login without giving a connect string is that "The user does not have an installed Repository. Invoke the Repository Administrator Utility. " So from the start menu, I choose Repository Administration Utility but nothing happened.
    Could anyone that have experience with this installation let me know what should I do? Im really looking forward to using 10G Designer.If this is not solved, then I'll resort back to using 6i. Maybe from there things are easier. Thanks in advance.

    After some heavy googling the problem is solved.

  • JSP - LoadBundle and Component Error in Visual Design Editor

    Hi.
    I've tried to make simple international JSF application. So the first thing to do was to externalize strings from JSP to resources. According to instructions from Java Studio Creator Field Guide Chapter 13:
    http://developers.sun.com/members/promo/jscreator/bookshelf/fieldguide2_preview_13_customizing.pdf
    I added LoadBundle component to my JSP page:
    <f:loadBundle basename="myApp.Bundle" var="messages1"/>
    and set a text property of label component like this:
    <ui:label binding="#{Page1.label1}" id="label1" labelLevel="1"
    style="position: absolute; left: 144px; top: 48px; width: 240px; height: 24px" text="#{messages1.title}"/>
    There is a line in myApp.Bundle.properties file:
    title = Title from resource bundle
    After changing text property of label component to #{messages1.title} I've got a message:
    Component Error
    Cannot display label component in the Visual Design editor.
    Error message from the component: javax.faces.el.PropertyNotFoundException: Error testing property 'title' in bean of type null.

    go to Tools/Update Center and download the latest
    version of the components. It will solve the
    problem.Thanks, it works. But there is still one drawback - Visual Designer doesn't show any text inside label. If I remove all strings from JSP to resource file I will get an empty page!
    Is there any solution of this problem?

    Thanks for any feedback,
    Jim

    Found the problem.
    It was an issue with the CURSOR with the SELECT ... FROM (SELECT CASE WHEN THEN ELSE END). After swithing to the DECODE statement, Designer is able to generate the package.
    CASE
    WHEN ISOLATION_IND = 'Y' THEN
    'A'
    WHEN OPERATED_IND = 'Y' THEN
    'B'
    ELSE
    'C'
    END
    decode(ISOLATION_IND,'Y','A',decode(OPERATED_IND,'Y','B','C'))
    However, still strange to me that Designer doesn't like the CASE as part of SELECT.

    I can export the same photo to my desktop and then load it into Aperture fine.
    When I set preferences to edit in CS2, this works fine, only Aperture seems to be the problem.
    What am I doing wrong?
    I'm using the following versions:
    - iPhoto 7.0.2
    - Aperture 1.5.4

    If you have Photoshop CS2 then you'd have a better editor using it within iPhoto as follows:
    Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
    1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
    2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
    3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
    This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
    If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    hi,
    to Jitendra:
    > I am facing a problem in updates optimizer while runing through db13 but it is runing successfully at os lavel.
    As which user have you executed the update statistics at OS level?
    Have you installed the oracle 10g instantclient as indicated on the SAP notes?
    what are your environment variables ofr the user <SID>adm?
    to kaushal:
    >The libclntsh.so.10.1 file is in the /export/home/oracle10g/lib32 directory which is specified in "Native Library Path Suffix"
    1) That would be on your system.
    2) That is the oracle client shared library, but SAP recommends to install the INSTANTCLIENT, and it will NOT be on the mentioned directory, even in YOUR system. BRCONNECT is looking for the instantclient not for the "normal" client.
    Please, check note 819829 Oracle Database 10g: Instant Client 10.x on Unix where it is explained
    to Eric:
    >if you are using Oracle 9i, then use the BR*tools made for Oracle 9.
    It is possible to use BRCONNECT 700 with Oracle 10g 9i, but I prefer to run BRCONNECT 640 with 9i as it can be complicated to set all variables.
