On my system these commands are in /usr/local/bin
It would be great if this path can be added to the j2sdk installation program.
regards,
Pierre.

Pierre,
Why don't you add those paths to the .profile of the
user which is used for the install of the sdk? Since
/usr/local/bin contains some of the most used UNIX
commands it would seem logical to have that in the
default path or am I missing something here (I am a
UNIX user not admin, so maybe there are reasons not to
add this to the path???)
Cheers,
DavidI installed the sdk as root, and it has /usr/local/bin in his PATH variable.
Pierre.

ideas why? Thanks for the helpIf you're new to Java don't start with Netbeans.
    Standard Advice:
As someone new to Java this person should not be using an IDE until they can install the JDK, setup classpaths, run 'java' and 'javac' from the commandline, navigate the JavaDocs and manage packages manually, i.e. through a command line. Yes, this will result in a higher initial learning curve, but will pay off greatly in the future. If they want to use a simple text editor like JEdit or TextPad for syntax highlighting that's fine, but by using anything more like JBuilder, Eclipse, IntelliJ, NetBeans, etc. they'll be doing themselves a huge disservice.

  • Problems installing j2sdk on mdk9.0

    Hello!
I have a serious problem installing java2 SDK on a linux
machine(mdk9.0). I unpacked the self extracting .bin file to
/usr/local, set up the JAVA_HOME environment variable and added the
$JAVA_HOME/bin (where the binaries are) to PATH, but javac and in fact
all other tools gave me 'Error initalizing the VM' error. When I ran
java_vm it appeared not to be able to find its shared
libraries(DLLs). Then I installed them with ldconfig and by setting the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/i386/. Now when I run java_vm it
reports "java_vm process: could not find Java VM symbols". So what's that now?
ps.: I am using j2sdk-1_4_0-linux-i386.bin. It did work on Slackware 8.1 when I installed it into /usr/java w/o even setting a single env variable. However, it got the same problems when I installed it into my home directory. At least I think they were the same.

    Hi
i'm dealing with the same problem at the moment. Found any solutions?

It should not be a problem, as long as you are careful. Note the delete settings option when uninstalling firefox will delete bookmarks etc for ALL installed versions of firefox.
Firefox attempts to retain the profile information, that include bookmarks etc when updating. It may still be prudent to consider other backup methods not entirely dependent on firefox.
The firefox 4 beta will install by default in a slightly different location, you are then able to run either the current or the beta version of firefox. It is recommended you set up a new profile for the new version of firefox. see

  • Problem with J2sdk instalation

    Hi!
    I'm a java begginer. (I started 1 hour ago! )
After installing j2sdk, some applets stop working (e.g some applets in java.sun.com ) , i.e they return the message "java.lang.ClassNotFoundException" (something like this).
I'm working in NT environment, with a Pentium 200 MGHZ MMX, and IE 5.5. I have already try to install javabeans, and flash 5.0 . When remove the j2sdk this problem disapears, and everything runs well.
I've also verified that java programs that use the Arrays class, in the compilation process, returns the error: "Can't resolve symbol Arrays.Sort"
    ^
Please help me, even if it sounds too stupid!
    Greetings
    Joao Nora

Hi, don't forget to check out your PATH and CLASSPATH, but I am sure you already have.
I think your problem is Arrays.Sort, it should be Arrays.sort ... hope this helps :-)

  • Problem installing ActiveX viewer in Windows 7

    Hello,
We downloaded the public beta of Windows 7 today and I am getting an error in our web application when it tries to install the Crystal Reports XI ActiveX report viewer (version 11.0.0.1424 of crviewer.dll).  IE8 will issue its normal prompt to ask you if you want to install the control, but after that, the little object image in the upper-left corner of the page turns to a red X.
I tried using the sample code which comes with Crystal XI (SimplePreviewReport.asp in the "BeginHere" folder) and that had the same problem.  I put some debug code into SmartViewerActiveX.asp and found that I was getting an "ActiveX component can't create object" error on this line:
         Set webBroker = CreateObject("CrystalReports11.WebReportBroker.1")
I don't think it's a security issue because I am an administrator on the machine and I didn't have any problems installing other ActiveX controls.  I tried running the web site in both the Local Intranet zone as well as the Trusted Sites zone.  I'm also thinking that the issue is more with Windows 7 than IE8 because I have IE8 Beta 2 installed on a Windows XP machine and the Crystal ActiveX viewer installs just fine there.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

XI R2 is more then an incremental update in some aspects to XI R1. They are officially versioned 11 and 11.5 and XI R2 is considered a new release. However in most aspects to a Crystal R1 customer XI R2 doesn't offer much more in functionality other than it is more up-to-date and is still receiving updates and patches.
With out looking at Operating Systems or other factors I generally recommend R1 customers move to R2 so they are kept up-to-date. However being an new version that does mean you will need to update your projects to call the R2 runtime, and then you can use the R2 merge modules.
As for how R2 merge modules work with Windows 7 I cannot say. We will have to wait until Windows 7 final build comes out before we will get a list of supported products on this Operating System, and this can take upwards of 3 months after the OS is released. I would hazard a guess (NOTE: GUESS is the important word here) that R1 and R2 will not be certified with Windows 7. This does not mean it will not work, but does mean it will not be tested and if errors are found that are particular to this OS they will not be fixed.
Remember that this is just a guess, based on R2 being 3 years old and nearing end of its patch cycle and Windows 7 being at least 4 months away. However this cannot be concidered an official statement it is just my personal opinion. Enough caveats there?

  • JRE or SDK install problem - installing in non-std dir

I'm encountering a problem trying to install either the JRE or SDK into a non-standard directory (one that's not the default of c:\j2sdk1.4.2_01 or what have you). This is occuring with both 1.4.2_01 and 1.4.2_02.
In this case, I'm trying to install it in a directory similar to c:\progra~1\compan~1\produc~1\jre. (Short names b/c I can't figure out how to do long paths silently, but that's a whole different issue).
The install nears the end and then presents the user with a "Java(TM) Update (1.4.2_01-b06) cannot be installed on this machine because the Java(TM) Virtual Machine is currently running. Please close all running Java(TM) applications, especially browsers. [RETRY] [CANCEL]" message.
There's definitely not a JVM running at the moment. If I click Cancel, the install finishes up and there is a workable install there. But why the prompt? Since this is a silent install within another install, it will cause concern for my customers.

Has anyone encountered this? I've narrowed it down to the fact that it's an install into a directory that's not the default. If I run the install without specifying the INSTALLDIR, everything works fine. Help is appreciated!

Rebooting has no effect whatsoever on this problem; even if you can now get the SDK installed, a non-administrative account won't be able to use the JRE in it, nor will the user be able to use the other JRE installed in the default location.

    Hi everyone,
When I try to install J2SDK 1.4.2_02 I receive an error message telling me that J2SDK cannot be installed because the java virtual machine (doesn't tell which one) is in use.
I have no java virtual machine running, confirmed by task manager and other third-party programs. And if I install JDK 1.4.2 (no revision) I have no problem.

I am not getting any error with jdk-1_2_2_011-win.exe. Is it something related to machine specific? Is there any thing i need to configure before installing j2sdk-1.3.1_02?
    Thanks,

    Ramesh,
I am having a similar problem with the un/re-installation of the NetBeans IDE. When installing the first time I was prompted to enter a working directory and the directory structure was entered incorrectly. When re-installing the software it did not prompt for the working directory... instead the directory was set to the previous "wrong" path. I can't seem to find anyway to fix this issue or find any files to delete in order to get a fresh install. Anyone who can help your comments would be appreciated.
    Thanks
