Problem: Labview 5.1 & HP 34970A via GPIB

Hi all !
I'm a total novice in Labview, but I have to control a HP 34970A with a
20-port MUX to read VDC signal from two dp-cell, a mass flow meter and a
thermocouple. I own a GPIB card (PCII) and I use Labview 5.1 on win95.
The problem is this:
the VISA initialization VI finds the HP, and correctly identifies it (with
the correct GPIB port). But, when I try to read or write (with the VISA
read-write VI) or when I use the HP drivers (found on the National
Instrument site), I obtain an error, which explanation sounds like "VISA
hasn't sufficient information on instrument location". This thing happens
even also when I send a simple request (as the IDN request), via the VISA
read-write VI.
Is it a driver probl
em, a HP problem or a GPIB problem ? I think it is a
driver problem (the GPIB software identifies the Hp). How can I fix it ? I
have downloaded the Labview driver of the HP, but I've noticed there are
also the LabWindows drivers....
Thanks for any advice ! I hope I have explained well the problem...

Tetrazzo

Instead of using VISA try using just the 488 or 488.2 vi's to communicate
with the HP. Verify you can read/write using the GPIB vi's. The logging
system I built uses just the 488.2 vi's and works fine. I found the 34970A
sample vi drivers didn't always works correctly.

  • Connecting PCs via GPIB in Labview

Is there a way to connect two PCs via GPIB, both running a Labview program? I just want to excange text files between them. The GPIB cards are PCMCIA-GPIB cards from NI.

You can, but you might not enjoy it.
I don't have the specifics for your GPIB cards, so I don't know how to do it for them, but in a previous job we put one of the GPIB cards in a non-System Controller mode. Then we could make it look like an instrument. Sorry I can't provide more details as it has proprietary code in it. But hopefully it gives you a place to start.

Your first task should be to just be able to send commands to the instrument.  Do as Dennis suggested and download the drivers for the instrument and get familiar with them.  Build up small VIs that do little tasks with those drivers so you can get used to them.  Then worry about your main interface.

  • HELP! (how to acquire two channels via gpib?)

    Hi,
    I have the following problem:
I have a LeCroy 4 channel OS connected via GPIB to my PC.
I need to acquire 100ms of data from two channels simultaneously, triggering
the event with a third channel.
I have installed the Labview-IVI drivers for my OS, but looking at the
    application's example I find only a one-channel acquisition example, and I
don't know how to change them in order to do a two-channel acquisition.
(I' m able only to make sequential acquisitions....).
How can I syncronize the read waveform blocks?
    Please help me,
    Many thanks
    Andrew

Since you have an IVI driver for the scope, you can use the IVI Oscilloscope class driver. Do all of the initialization and configuration for acquisition, channel, and trigger (under the configuration palette). Under the measurement palette, you can do an IVI Scope Read Waveform for one channel, and then do a an IVI Scope Fetch Waveform. The read initiates an acquisition and the fetch returns a waveform for any other enabled channel without doing another acquisition. Both the read and fetch return an initial x relative to the trigger and x increment in seconds so its easy to get the data you need from the waveform arrays. Good luck.

  • Transfer files from scope to PC via GPIB

I want to transfer my hard-copy files from scope to my PC via GPIB link. I am using TDS684B. Is there any possible way. Thanks.

In terms of saving the data, forget that it's coming from a particular instrument (at this point that's an unnecessary bit of detail). There are just so many things you can do with data that comes into LV. You can plot it, analyze it, save it to disk, or print it out.
Save it however you, or your customer, wants to save it. There's nothing special with this data.

What do you have it connected to? Doesn't the optical head you are refering to require an actual instrument like the 8153?

  • How to save a waveform from TDS3000 series oscilloscope to PC via GPIB?

Hi, I'm a summer intern and I've been recently assigned the task to transfer a telecom pulse mask waveform from a TDS3054 to the PC via GPIB. My question is, is there anyway that I can save the waveform on the scope and transfer the file onto my PC? Or even better yet, save the waveform directly onto my PC in a spreadsheet format?

First, download the instrument driver for the TDS3054 scope from National Instruments' Instrument Driver Network. Depending on what software you have installed on your system, you may need to download additional software (look at the "Required Software" section). If you have Measurement Studio 6.0 and the NI-GPIB driver, you should have everything you need.
Once you've installed the instrument driver, look at the instructions that came with the instrument driver for how to save and read from your oscilloscope, and look at the instructions here for how to use that instrument driver with Visual Basic 6.0.

  • Advantest R376x trace input via GPIB (LabView 7.1)

I'm developing an application that can be used to save the registers to computers harddisk and the other way.
I can read all scale, display etc parameters and the trace itself(memory or fmemory1/2). These values are saved to disk.
(At this point I usually recall some other register.)
I also can write all parameters succesfully to analyzer. When I write the trace to analyzer it doesn't give any error messages or anything. I just can't see the trace anywhere in any channel.
I use the instrument driver's trace input/output vi's to input/output the trace. For reading/writing the other parameters I use simple vi's by me.
I would be very thankful if someone could help me with this problem.
    Pasi S

    Pasi,
What do you mean by "write the trace to analyzer"? Did you actually acquire anything with the analyzer?
There are some application examples come with the instrument driver, try run those examples and see if they work first.
You also said "For reading/writing the other parameters I use simple vi's by me." Do you mean that you wrote your own VIs?

  • Problem labview & perl

We work NT platform (labview v.5.1). Our purpose is to start a vi's file "via
website" (with script in perl lenguage). The instruction is:
    "Win32:rocess::Create($ProcessObj,"C:/soft/natinst/labview/labview.exe","C:/soft/natinst/labview/labview.exe
    uveis/gf_prova.vi",0,NORMAL_PRIORITY_CLASS,".")|| die ErrorReport();"
With this, the server start the labview program, but no the vi file.
We repeat the experience with the notepad program and the instruction go
    ok.
The other solution is use the next instrution: "exec ('C:/soft/natinst/labview/labview.exe
    uveis/gf_prova.vi');",
but then, the vi executes in the background (the front panel not appears
in the monitor, because the vi is running, and then i can't kill the process...
    Ctrl-A
    lt-Del).
I think that the problem resides in the definition labview process.
I have explained it good (???).
I don't know if someone has work in similar themes. I will be grateful for
    some suggestion or comment.
    Thanks,

  • How do I get LabView to communicate with HP4142B, using GPIB?

I have a PCI-GPIB card from NI and running Labview 6.1 under Windows 2000.
I have trouble to communicate with a HP4142B.
Every time I send a GPIB-command to the 4142B I get an EABO error. The instrument seems to receive the command
but does not give any answer. There may be some trouble with the EOS character but I don't know how to correct it. Communication with other instuments (i.e. HP34401A) works without this problem together with LabView.
I have also tried to send commands with the NI-488.2 program but the EABO error remains.
First I thougth that HP4142B has got a HW error but then I sucessfully used a program called "HP VEE".
The instument then worked without any trouble so there must be someth
    ing else that is incorrect.
It is important for me to get the HP4142B to work with LabView and the PCI-GPIB card so I hope you can help me solve my problem!

    Hello John,
This sounds like a classic case of missing termination characters. The termination characters should be specified in the instrument's user manual. HP VEE is probably adding certain termination characters by default. Common termination characters are a carriage return, a linefeed, or both. In LabVIEW you can easily add termination characters to a string by right clicking on it, selecting / codes display, typing in a /r or /n at the end of the string. Alternatively, if you are using the regular 488.2 VIs (not VISA), you can specify different modes on the write commands. Each mode corresponds to the termination methods/characters that will be appended to the command. See the LabVIEW detailed help on the GPIB write VI for more information.

  • Xnet problems labview 8.6.1

Existing Labview code on clients sytems 8.6.1 so have to work with this.
Using CAN 2 PCMCIA card for original program development using API Channels was no problem and client ECU could be read without fail over long periods (24 hours plus).
PCI card dual channel had to be used for client deployment which required the installation of XNET to support this card. Version used was 1.5 because after this xnet no longer supports Labview 8.6.1.
Can drivers loaded version 2.7.3 (last support for 8.6.1)
When the originally developed program was run with PCI card and XNET problems occurred with the CAN link failing after about 10 minutes. Error message summerised was insufficient sampling time or/and too much data specified. Sample rate is 1ms (client ECU has new data available every 20ms so 1ms should be well within limits?)
From what I gather the PCI card buffers are not read fast enough, fill up to limit then just crash........
So after lots of messing around and reading forum it seems that Frames are the way forward for the versions of drivers/software I am using.
Ok, that's the background, so what do I want to know?
    1) Using MAX have created .ncd file for Channels, is it possible to use this for Frames? Found the XNET Database Editor and see you can develop
        clusters?
    2) Using the Examples file tried XNET read vi and although it seems to allow me to select a frame it does not recognise my installed PCMCIA CAN
interface, Why?              Looking in MAX the card is there and tests fine..............
    3) Tried a CAN Example and that quite happily found my CAN PCMCIA card and also obtained data from Clients ECU, Why?
    Summay
Without going through the pain of what Labview/Drivers no longer supports etc I just want to know what I need to concentrate on?
I think one conclusion is that I need to use frames, channels cannot cope?
XNET vi's are limited with legacy CAN and perhaps Labview 8.6.1 so do not use there vi's??
Stick with legacy CAN vi's using Frames and 'chunk' the frames using std LV code?
Appreciate comments on best route to go. In fairness the XNET stuff looks good but I get the feeling its not applicable to the version of Labview I am using?

    Hi Jack,
I hope you are well. In response to your questions please see below (If you are still having issues).
    1)      The .ncd file is used for configuration information about CAN messages such as frames and channels.
Further information can be found here:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/FCC9622168F856B486256CA2005C981B
You can use the NI Database editor if you need to store information about the frames and signals on the network. It is possible to use a CAN network without using the Database Editor, but highly recommended.
2  & 3) To use a XNET example, you will have to be using an XNET supported card (shown in the XNET Readme file). The PCMCIA CAN interface sits on the CAN driver level so relies on the CAN driver.
