Problem running Windows software on iMac but not MacBook Pro

I just got an iMac 27" to replace my old iMac 24". I also have a MacBook Pro.
I am using the same version of Parallels 7 and Windows 7 on both my iMac 27 and my MacBook to run Lotus Approach 9.8 (part of a SmartSuite package).
Lotus Approach works fine on my MacBook (as it did on my old iMac 24), but when I open database files on my iMac 27, the database screen starts flashing (rewriting the screen in some endless loop) and the program becomes inoperable.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled Parallels 7, Windows 7 and the Lotus software on my iMac 27, but that did not resolve the problem.
I need to use the Lotus Approach software on my iMac 27 -- so I can convert the Approach databases to FileMaker.
Any ideas about what the problem might be on the iMac 27 or what I can to to fix this problem? Is this a hardware problem, a driver problem, or something else?

Brilliant suggestion! I checked all the display settings on my iMac 27" and confirmed they were the same settings as my MacBook -- until I checked the Window 7 screen resolution. Because of its size, I had expanded the screen across most of the monitor. When I changed the resolution to one suggested or configured by Windows, Approach worked fine. I've now tested it on quite a few of the settings, and as long as I let Windows determine the best resolution (on my iMac 27" it seems to be 2043 x 1276), Approach works like it should. Thank you!

  • PDFs and Word Files open on iMac but not Macbook Pro

I own an iMac and a MacBook Pro. Recently, I've been having an issue with some PDFs and Word files that have been emailed to me from different contacts. All open—and can be seen using Quick Look—on the iMac. However, on the MacBook Pro it's a different story. When I try Quick Look all I see are the icons. When I try to open the PDFs in Preview (default app for me) I get an error message saying the file could not be opened and might be damaged. When I try to open the Word doc in Word, Pages or Bean I see all of the extraneous header information etc and the text is all mixed up in that formatting junk. I have repaired permissions, cleared out my user cache, restarted—pretty much everything I can think of. But no luck. Thought?

  • Why can you run windows on a mac, but not mac on windows

I dont understant why you can run windows on a mac, but not mac on windows.  Any help.  I would purchase OS X Mountain Lion if you gave me a way.

Microsoft builds software to run on other companies' hardware, pretty much exclusively if you don't count the long line of failed devices: Zune, Windows phone, and now the Surface.
Apple builds hardware. They support that hardware with their own operating system. It is designed to run only on their very tightly integrated hardware. Trying to write software for the plethora of crap being sold would be a failing proposition and would divert resources away from the great software they provide for their hardware customers.
The hardware and software are very well engineered to provide the best possible experience.
If you want to experience a Mac, buy a Mac.

  • RemoteFX Display problems with Windows 8.1 VM but not with Windows 7 VM running on Hyper-V VDI Server 2012R2

Has anyone seen anything like this?
After many, many, hours of wading through and eliminating potential variables the issue has been narrowed down to being present with a Windows 8.1 VM and not on Windows 7 VM.
The problem is with glitchy display issues (Random Pixellation, Fuzzy Screen areas, Entire Screen filled with random shapes/colors etc.).
This is a Server 2012 R2 environment it is running Hyper-V Remote Desktop Virtualization Host.
An Nvidia Quadro K2200 adapter has been enabled for RemoteFX and passed through.
Also have tried Nvidia Grid K2 adapter. Both adapters use same driver set and multiple driver versions have been tested.
Two Generation 1 VM's have been created.  One for WIndows 8.1, One for Windows 7.  All updates installed.
Each VM uses the same set of Hyper-V resources, Virtual Switch etc.  (The settings for each VM are the same).
With RemoteFX disabled on each VM the issue is not present on either VM.
With RemoteFX enabled on each VM the issue is present on the Windows 8.1 VM and not the Windows 7 VM.
There is no difference if only one VM at a time is enabled and running.  (Not GPU load related)

    Hi,
Generation 2 virtual machines have a simplified virtual hardware model, and supports Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware instead of BIOS-based firmware. The majority of legacy devices have also been removed from generation 2 virtual machines.

  • Signal strength from Airport Express dropping to imac (but not Macbook)

I have an Airport Extreme to control my home wireless network. My Macbook Pro works all over the house with no reception/signal strength problems. But my imac, which is situated about 15/18metres away is dropping signal all the time. Any ideas or advice please?
    Cheers
    Simon

The antenna opening for the iMac is on the back of the screen, so make sure that the iMac is not pushed back into a cabinet or even a corner of the room. Sometimes a small change in location will make a big difference in reception.
Also check to make sure that you do not have other electronics near the iMac like a cordless phone, ampliifer, satellite receiver, TV, etc.
If the iMac is near a window, it may be picking up wireless interference from another network in the neighborhood near you. Try to move the iMac away from the window to a different location.
Power off the iMac and restart after any change in location so that it will establish a new connection.
If you try everthing and the results seem to be the same, then you might want to think about taking the iMac to an Apple store in your area to let them have a look and check out the wireless card in the device.

  • Slow connection speed imac but not macbook

Slow connection speed on my imac 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo running 10.6.8, I get download of 15mbs and upload of 9mbs but on my macbook pro 2.8ghz intel core i7 on the same desk I am getting 33mbs and 10mbs!
Can anyone help me out on this, thanks in advance.

The two key numbers here are: 1) Transmit Rate: 59 which is the current maximum bandwidth of the wireless connection in Mbps, and 2) The MCS Index: 6 which indicates that the iMac's connection to the BT Home Hub wireless is only using a single spatial steam. Forget the techo mumbo jumbo, your iMac is much more capable than that.
You should expect a Transmit rate closer to 130 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz radio. At least this explains the poorer performance of the iMac. I would venture to say that if you temporarily connected the iMac to the BT using an Ethernet connection the iMac would equal or exceed the MacBook Pro's bandwidth performance.
Has this always been an issue or something that has just recently started happening?

  • WiFi in Asia works on iPhone but not Macbook Pro

I am currently traveling around Asia and I have my Macbook Pro and iPhone with me.  I have had no problems connecting to WiFi networks with my iPhone (currently typing this message with it on my hotel's WiFi).  However, my Macbook Pro has had endless issues.  Sometime it works, but often it doesn't.  The most common issue is that it gets a self assigned IP address and can't connect to the internet.  It can usually find and connect to the WiFi network, but from there things get dodgy.  As I said, it sometimes works fine.  I would say it works on 1 out of every 3 networks that I try.
So far I have tried the following:
Renewing DHCP Lease (without client ID and with made up client ID)
    Disabling firewall.
Turning off wifi and them back on.
    Restarting computer.
    Deleting WiFi service and recreating.
    Creating new "location".
    Repairing permissions.
    Using different login account.
Manually entering TCP/IP settings copied from iPhone.
    "Forgetting network" and rejoining.
None of the above has helped, except that one time renewing DHCP lease with a made up client ID did the trick.
I have the summer 2012 MacBook Pro 13" with OS 10.7.5 installed.
Any help would be very appreciated.  :)

It doesn't seem like anybody is going to respond to this thread, but I guess I will keep updating it just in case (and perhaps if I ever find a solution it will be helpful to others).
Since my last post I have been to about 12 hotels in both Thailand and Cambodia.  This issue has continued with some variations:
    * At 3 of the hotels the wifi on my MacBook Pro actually worked!  It seemed to work ok, with minimal speed issues.
    * At 6 of the hotels the wifi did not work on my MacBook Pro, but worked fine on my iPhone.
    * At 3 of the hotels the wifi worked on my MacBook Pro but was PAINFULLY slow (to point where I couldn't upload photos, could barely check facebook, etc).  In fact, it was so slow that I basically gave up using the internet with my MacBook Pro and used my iPhone instead (which had normal speeds).
I have continued to search the internet for solutions and nothing has helped yet.  It seems like this is a common issue with newer MacBook Pros, especially with OS Lion.
I have also concluded that this isn't necessarily an Asia specific issue.  It seems like an issue with my MacBook Pro and using various WiFi routers with various setups.  Some work, but most do not.  Unfortunately I do not have access to any of the routers that I am using, so changing router setup is not an option.

  • Netflix works on iphone but not MacBook Pro?

I'm a new Apple Macbook pro guy.  Switched from Window PCs after getting my iphone.  I downloaded the Netflix for iphone - works great, but Netflix on my MAC wants Silverlight.  Is that secure?  I heard you also have to enable JavaScripts - Java is secure, but JavaScripts are not?
Old guy needs some help :-)

  • Tethering working on MacPro but NOT Macbook Pro

Having a problem with tethering when using it with my laptop. Macbook Pro (6.1), Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and Aperture 3.1.1.
My MacPro is working without any problem. (Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and Aperture 3.1.1)
I have tried both my cameras Canon 5Dmk2 and Canon 20D. Both cameras are recognized in both Macbook Pro and MacPro but only on the MacPro the images will show up. In my Macbook Pro I can press capture and both cameras react but then nothing happens.
Strange it works on one computer but not the other one.
    Any suggestions?

You're right it is strange. As it works on one system and not the other with the exact same camera and cable and the fact that you hear the shutter go off even on the system where the images don't show up would seem to indicate some difference in the configuration of Aperture on the MBP.
Do the images ever show up? If you go to the Photos icon and search you're complete library do they appear anywhere? There isn't a filter set on the project your importing into by any chance?
I would make a new empty library and try using that to see if it makes any difference. You could also move the com.apple.Aperture.plist file from your Library/Preferences folder to the desktop, restart Aperture and see if that makes any difference.

  • Just bought an Epson 2540 Printer, connects with iPhone but not Macbook Pro

I am able to print from my iPhone but not my Macbook Pro. Wireless test page worked fine. Turned on Sharing option, turned off firewall, and still does not connect. This is very frustrating, please help

You may have to visit the Epson website and make sure your printer has drivers updated for Mavericks:

Updating the drivers through this link should fix your issue. Post if there's any problem.

  • IPod shipped, but not Macbook Pro?

I ordered 15" Macbook Pro with an anti-glare screen and a 16gb iPod nano with the school discount plus rebate on September 2nd. I have received my iPod, but not MBP hasn't shipped and I keep getting e-mails from Apple saying that my payment hasn't been received. I'm so confused! Is that why my MBP hasn't shipped?? But why would they ship my iPod if they haven't received my payment?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you checked with your bank or credit card company to see if there is a problem? When I ordered my MBP, I had to authorize a higher POS limit to pay for it with my check card. You may need to do something like that. If the iPod was free with the purchase of the Mac, they may have sent that out just on the basis of the order alone since it would not specifically need to be paid for.
Contact your bank or credit card company and see what the problem is.
    Good luck!

  • Can connect iPhone to friend's wifi, but not MacBook Pro. Says password is invalid.t

My friend gave me her wifi password so I can connect at her house. I onnected my iPhone with no problems. But when I try to connect my MacBook Pro I keep getting a message that the password is invalid. It's the exact same password I used to connect my phone! recently she had relatives visit and the same thing happened for them. What's up?

You would do better to ask in the Mac Forum - this is the iPad forum.

  • Disc playing fine on DVD, but not MacBook Pro

Hello - I have authored and burned discs, and they all play fine on my DVD player on my TV set, but are not playing on my MacBook Pro. I put the disc in after Disk Utility shows it's been burned successfully, and after a few 'tries', it pops out, never even mounting on the computer. Might there be a 'fix' for this? Thanks so much...

I would start to troubleshoot by trying a commercial (rented or purchased) DVD and make sure it's not the drive itself. It would be strange for a DVD to work in a set top box but not your computer, it's usually the other way around.
And did you really mean to post this in the Final Cut forum?

    Hi,
I have paid and installed 'itunes match' on my main Mac which has my library, it has synced to my ipad, iphone 4, Apple TV and ipod touch but it isnt working to my macbook pro?! It says only one library can be used but I want my music (not all the other stuff) from my main Mac linked to my laptop, is this possible so that I dont have two librarys?
Also, is my entire music backed up somehow just in case something happens to my mac?
    Thanks in advance...
