Thanks Werner.
It was because of the shut abort. I have done it once and then mounted back and tried backup.. it gave error. again i did shut immediate and mounted back and error again... I havent tried opening it once.. now i opened database first and then shut immediate and then mount... backup running fine.. :-) thanks a lot..

Arun
Edited by: arundba on Feb 17, 2011 2:55 AMSince there had been a shutdown abort, you had to do a full open to allow crash recovery to occur and get everything back in sync. As long as you were only doing STARTUP MOUNT, it couldn't perform the necessary recovery.

  • 10g Physical Standby to be used for Backup through RMAN

    Dear All,
    I have 10g Database Primary and Standby Server which is operating in Maximum Performance Mode. I want to use Standby Database for performing Weekly Full and Daily Incremental Backups through RMAN. Kindly inform me is it possible, if yes how should I configure it. I will also be using Compression and Encryption while performing backups.
    Best Regards,
    Asif

    Yes, that is possible.
    Because the standby databases are in mount mode, they can be accessed through the SYS account .
    I use the following RMAN script for the same purpose. Please note that we have configure the flashback area, so we are not letting RMAN delete the archive files:
    run {
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    allocate channel ch1 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/tdpo.opt)';
    backup
    incremental level 0
    tag full_bk_db_webshop
    format 'df_%d_t%t_s%s_p%p'
    (database include current controlfile);
    backup archivelog all;
    This script is for a FULL backup ( level 0 ). You could also use the "backup full" command
    You can easily change the level of the Backup for incremental purposes.
    Starting RMAN - if configured correctly - is the same as with an open database
    export ORACLE_SID=<STDBYSID>
    rman target / rcvcat <rman/rman>@<catalogsid>
    the user for, and the catalogsid are merely examples

  • Find how many archive logs are generated and backup through RMAN

    friends,
    how many arhcive logs are generating between 2 consecutive backups through RMAN.
    Ur help is really appricated.
    Thanks

    Sorry, I misunderstood the question
    I think you are not asking how many logs are generated since last backup. My initial repy was the answer for this
    The answer of you question on 10G R2 is like below. Query groups your archivelog backup sessions and counts the logs in one session which is the number of generated archivelog file between two backup session/.
    select session_key,count(sequence#) from V$BACKUP_ARCHIVELOG_DETAILS group by session_key order by 1 desc

  • To Confgure RMAN backup through Netvault

    Hi All,
    I have configured RMAN backup through a Net-Vault. Previously I was taking User Managed backup, Backup ran successfully. I have issues with RMAN Backup through NetVault.
    The following is the error message received.
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    : =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00554: initialization of internal recovery manager package failed
    RMAN-04005: error from target database:
    ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
    Failed with exit code 3
    RMAN returned exit code 3
    But when I take RMAN backup directly(Without Netvault) with that oracle user, I have no problem - Backup Runs properly.
    What should I do to take Backup through NetVault.
    Thanks In Advance,
    Suresh S.

    No it's not at all possible to take backup of multiple database through the manually allocated channel.
    Allocating the channel manually is only possible while running the commands in batch mode
    eg. run {
    allocate channel ch1 type disk format='/backup1/RMANBACKUP/PROD521_%s_%p';
    allocate channel ch2 type disk format='/backup1/RMANBACKUP/PROD521_%s_%p';
    backup database setsize=12582912;
    release channel ch1;
    release channel ch2;
    And you can connect through single rman prompt to only one target database not more than that. So at any point of time you connect to only one database you can user channels to backup that database only.

  • Oracle Online Backup through EMC Networker - RMAN Script

    Hi,
    For taking online oracle backup through EMC Networker, we configure the RMAN script to connect to the target database, create the media channels, backup format etc. The password for the sys or rman user entered in the RMAN script is in clear-text format.
    Due to security reasons, I don't want the passwords to be entered in the RMAN script. Is there any option for configuring RMAN script without mentioning the username/password to connect to the target database ?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Shreejesh.

    When you have to connect remotely to RMAN, you cannot hide the password, you can only define very restricted access for the script itself. Remote OS authentication will not work, because the target db user needs SYSDBA privilege, which cannot be granted to an externally identified user.

  • Taking tablespace offline through RMAN command line

    I am taking a Oracle 9i Backup and Recovery class. One of the hands-on assignments is to simulate a lost datafile. The instructions say to shut down the database through RMAN, delete the INDX01.dbf datafile through my operating system, mount the database, take the INDX tablespace offline, open the database, recover the INDX01.dbf datafile, and then place the INDX tablespace online again.
    My problem is that when I issue the command (in RMAN) to take the INDX tablespace offline (remember, database is mounted), I get an error saying the database is not open. The command I am issuing through RMAN is this: >sql 'ALTER TABLESPACE INDX OFFLINE IMMEDIATE'; I can't get any further because of the error message that my database is not open. Is my instruction book wrong in that I can't take the tablespace offline if the database is in a mounted state? Does the database have to be open to do this?

    4. Mount the database and take the tablespace corresponding to Indx01.dbf data file offline.There could be a misunderstanding about the command to be used. ALTER TABLESPACE command needs an open DB to work, but you can use
    RMAN> sql 'alter database datafile <file name or file number> offline drop';
    that will work with DB in mount state. See this example :
    RMAN> startup mount
    connected to target database (not started)
    Oracle instance started
    database mounted

  • Recover db without backup sets rman

    Hi,
    Is there any way to restore the database without backup sets. We have the recent incremental backup, however the backupsets have failed.
    Please advise.

    RMAN backupsets are defined to have a retention period and moving the backup from disk to tape and then freeing the space on the disk.
    where did you get this definition?
    RMAN can store backup data in a logical structure called a backup set, which is the smallest unit of an RMAN backup. A backup set contains the data from one or more datafiles, archived redo logs, or control files or server parameter file. Backup sets, which are only created and accessed through RMAN, are the only form in which RMAN can write backups to media managers such as tape drives and tape libraries.
    A backup set contains one or more binary files in an RMAN-specific format. This file is known as a backup piece. A backup set can contain multiple datafiles. For example, you can back up ten datafiles into a single backup set consisting of a single backup piece. In this case, RMAN creates one backup piece as output. The backup set contains only this backup piece.

    You will need to define your problem in detail if you know what the problem is. what are you trying to achieve?

  • Problem with backups on Tape

    Could you help me ,I have a problem with backups on tape drive .The error which Windows throws is "BackupTapeFile::UnloadTape: PrepareTape(UNLOCK) failure on backup device '\\.\tape0'. Operating system error 21(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105)."
    Does anyone of you have the same problem.Thank you!

    You cannot perform a regular restore/recovery (up to the latest possible point in time), because at this time dropped tablespace is not known to the controlfiles/recocery catalog and therefore not known to RMAN,too. You have to 2 possibilities:
    1. Restore the entire database and recover back in time to before the tablespace is dropped.
    This will cause ALL data within the database to go back in time, not just this tablespace.
    2. Clone the target database to a new location, perform point in time recovery in order to export
    the data of the tablespace for import into the original database. This causes the data of this
    tablespace to be brought back into the production database, not effecting existing (current) data
    in any other area of the database.
    As you can see recovering from a dropped tablespace needs some additional efforts. By the way you also cannot use RMAN's TSPITR functionality.

    Check the value for the parameter "COMPATIBLE" in the source and standby database instance parameter files.
    "COMPATIBLE" should be the same.
    See http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/create_ps.htm#i70517
    "... ensure the COMPATIBLE initialization parameter is set to the same value on both the primary and standby databases"

    This is a user supported frum, so making threats really doesn't help, besides which it's not like any of us can really make a dent in Toshiba's bottom line despite how many people we think we can influence. Unless those people were standing in line to buy a Toshiba product cash in hand, and you pulled them out, it really doesn't add up for them.
    At this point it would probably be better for you to use the 800 number. Have all your e-mails ready to forward, if needed, to whoever you end up talking to. Don;t let them off the hook. An hour on the phone is much better than weeks passing e-mails through a support site. Also contest the charge with your bank or credit card.
