Problem with Animation Codec footage

I have a 90-minute movie that was edited by a third party on a PC Avid system and exported to QuickTime using the animation codec to preserve as much quality as possible. I'm trying to bring the movie into FCP to add chapter markers and then export to Compressor and DVD Studio Pro.
The problem is that, even though I can see the movie in the preview window, when I move it to the Canvas and the Timeline, the video doesn't show up. I have audio but no video. When I move it to the Canvas it shows up in the timeline as needing to be rendered.
I did try to set up the sequence settings to match the specs for the source movie, but that doesn't seem to help. Here are the specs for the source movie --
Ave. Data Rate: 38824 k/sec.
Frame Size: 720 x 486
Color Depth: 32-bit Color
Codec: Animation at Most Quality
Frame Rate 29.97 fps
It may be choking my computer or it may be choking my video card. Those details are below. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

The item properties are as above --< </div>
Um, no. The reason I asked was that you stated the "clip properties in the timeline are as follows" and that would, might, give us only the properties of the sequence, not the clip from the Browser.
We have some oddball issues here. The source was a PC Avid system. You didn't need to use Animation. Preserving "quality" when you're going out to DVD is wasted time and effort; keep your original Animation file but convert it to something you can use with more convenience. And, if we were looking over your shoulder this would be much easier.
Since we're drifting into two or three different topics and two or three of us are posting out of sequence and confusing each other (well, I'M confused) I'll end by suggesting you begin another thread with a single, carefully defined question.

In the future, Swing related questions should be posted in the Swing forum.
Your usage of the getLayeredPane() method is something I've never seen before, so I don't know if thats the problem or not.
How to display a "background image" is asked all the time in the Swing forum. So to familiarize yourself with the forum you can try searching the Swing forum. Using the keywords I highlighted would be a good place to start.

  • Solution to Gamma/Color Shift Problems with Apple Codecs - Adobe BUG

    Hi....
In AfterEffects when choosing an output module and that module be ProRes or 10 Bit Uncompressed,
when trying to color manage the file, there is a fine line called
'This Codec Does Not Support Output Profile'
You can find it int he Color Management Pane of the output module....
Funny thing is - That Profile Embedding IS support by:#
Apple's Compressor and THE CODEC 4444 AND UnCompressed
    Episodes Encoder
    See following Screen Shots:
    First one from Apple's Compressor...
Look at that little beautiful Color Option... Adobe did you MISS that one, perhaps...
You must have - because your APPS are NOT including that when encoding or should I say
    butchering movie files....
Here adobes famous but wrong dialog!!!!
And in this next screen shot you can easily see that adobe just strips the color profile out of the file...
AND THAT IS WHY THERE IS A COLOR SHIFT...........
left image = Apple's Compressor Encoding (Colors match of course) - Right Adobe's BRUTAL encoding (Colors WONT match...)
Now, in after effects you wont notice the shift. But ALL mac and PC users using quicktime to watch YOUR movies
are going to be looking at a movie with a different look than you thought it WOULD be... Courtesy of adobe ;-)
Jokes aside, Adobe.... It seems as if this one is on you to fix... Apple's Compressor has NO problems. And other encoders are also preserving those values.
Now... Let us assume that I encode in compressor... Looks are matching 100% that of the original source. All it takes to mess that up is ONE
roundtrip to after effects, premiere pro or Media Encoder. That is if I wanna maintain my initial choice of transcodec - in my case 4444 or 10bit Uncomp.
I could of course export to animation and then use compressor AGAIN to transcode to my format of choice... But in the long run I think that will become tedious.
Perhaps you could assign a few engineers on this one and in the future spend MORE time on living up to the name PRO(The most misused word in the software business) instead of wasting time generating new Application icons for your apps....
Thanks for reading and for a PROMPT and near-future BUG FIX

It's not really "embedding" anything, it merely sets the QT color space flags which have been there forever, but are mostly unused. Specific to ProRes it also toggles different internal optimizations in the encoding. That's also documented somewhere on the QT developer pages. I'm not sure I share your views otherwise. The point really is, that Apple developed ProRes just as much as a closed workflow within their products as Avid did with their CoDecs. Therefore the widespread use of the CoDecs is merely a byproduct of the use of the products, but not per se an intended workflow outside of those and, which is the more important part, also not explicable as a causal circumstance of the quality. If I may be so bold: What you are saying sounds like everyone would be using the Animation CoDec because it is so good, when the simple fact is that there are no decent free cross-platform alternatives and people are willing to accept limitations because of that. Don't get me wrong, ProRes is well designed and pretty robust, but the world doesn't come to an end without it and outside the Mac world it is difficult to deal with. Hell, it's even difficult to deal with between different versions of FCP occasionally...
    Mylenium
I have been testing codecs for a long long looooooong time. My criterion(s) are:
    1) Image Quality and that through multiple encoding generations and color grading
    THEEEN
a looooong way down the road
    2) Performance
BTW - I find that working with files less compressed and thus HUGE is much better. Hard drives are so cheap that one can build himself an 8 Disk RAID0 and that takes care of everything. In PPRO I can cut real time in FulRes with an uncompressed codec with the processors maxing at 3%  while the H264 editing sequence will stutter like a drunken wasp and maxing the CPUs at 63%.... Go figure...
ProRes 4444's impeccable imageQuality:performance ratio, is unbeaten.
Especially on H264 material like that of the Canon5D. You might say if the source is 4:2:0 why bother upping it to 4444... Well in theory perhaps
it is overkill. But rather than reading in theoretical white papers I conduct my own tests. And the end results are (REALITY) and way different from what theory states. TO anyone reading this. DONT believe ANYTHING you read about codec nor what I am saying.... DO YOUR OWN TESTING and judge for yourself. Problem is that you have to do 100's and 100's of transcodings with ONE source to various destinations with lost of grading and transcoding generation. THEN you have to keep track of your tests and THEN compare them. It takes WEEKs. But it is well worth while it. In my case... I start with a Canon5DMKII H264 movies. Transcode it to PRORES4444 then I do LOTS of compositing and re-encoding then lots of color grading etc etc etc. Then I export back to H264 - and the end result is STUNNING has NO artifacts and is adorable to look at. Not so with at least 6 other codecs claiming to be top-notch....
Sure Mylenium, the world would NOT end with PR4444 not in it... BUT the WORLD has ALREADY decided that it WANTED ProRes4444 in it. It is growing and that every day..........
Had the codec not been so darn excellent - it would NOT have been used. Period.

i got a problem with making animated gif through flash.
on html/swf publication it looks clear.
but the weird thing is through gif publication, it wouldn't show. and exporting it as a movie as gif cause visual defect when put up on web.
it looks better when you open it in a browser.
this is how it looks for a profile gif in thumbnail mode. blocky and unclear.
how do you get it to look good both in thumbnail mode and in browser mode. i seen other that have a clear gif in thumbnail mode.  are my setting wrong for flash? or should i just do gif in photshop instead. i heard rumors flash don't do gif very well.

  • Sigmatel 9205 - Problems with audio codec in Windows XP

Does anyone have a working solution to using IDT Sigmatel STAC 9205 Audio Codec in Windows XP.  I have Dell Lat. D531, D630, D830 and XPS M1330 (the D531 and XPS came with VISTA pre-installed - we don't support, so I formatted and installed Windows XP).  The problem is that I cannot, for the life of me, get the Sigmatel driver to install.  Even on the machines that came with Windows XP (we routinely format the Dell OEM OS and replace with our volume license XP OS) the driver won't install.  I even repaired the OS installation with the OEM (Dell) version and still the driver will. not. install.....  This is a very recent problem and I have at least 15 laptops that I can't get the integrated sound card to work (when I go to install the driver the message is basically the component you are trying to install is not present on this system).  I have been 'working' with Dell Tech Support (Gold and otherwise) to no avail.  One tech sent a replacement hard drive imaged with a working driver -- however, she sent a VISTA imaged hard drive...I explained that we don't support VISTA prior to her sending the drive.  One tech is having the motherboard replaced (today).  I'll see how that goes.  This driver is the kiss of death unless dell with supply a pc card as a replacement, I have tried everything I know to do and Dell Tech support knows to do.  ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

Tony, some posters have reported that the XP drivers for the Vostro 1500 will work for the M1330.
    Vostro 1500 XP downloads
However before installing any Sigmatel driver after an OS installation you should follow this order of driver installation:
    a. Install Dell Notebook System Software R154270 (click the + sign next to System Utilities). Restart.
    b. Next install the Intel Mobile Chipset driver 153997 (click the + sign next to Chipset). Restart.
    c. Finally re-install the Sigmatel audio driver R158235 (click the + sign next to Audio).
Some v1500 users have reported that they had to "uninstall an unknown PCI device in Device manager first , then install the driver normally".
Rarely there will still be a problem with the installation at this point (in XP). In those cases follow this tip from forum member rpilT2005: check in the Device Manager for a "PCI Device" with a yellow question mark next to it, under the "System Devices" grouping. Hit 'update driver' on that one, and it should find the driver.
A previous poster was able to get his audio working by following the above instructions more or less He said that after installing the Chipset driver he next uninstalled the unknown PCI device. He let Windows look for a new driver but he said he had to point it to the folder with the driver. Then he wrote, "Xp still said that an error occurred and the device may not work properly, but it did work fine and I also don't have a yellow question mark..." I know this is confusing.

  • Premiere Pro CC can't open audio from QuickTime exports with Animation Codec

Exported a file with format: QuickTime VideoCodec: Animation, with an alpha channel. When I opened the exported file back up in CC it doesn't recognize or play back the audio, but when I opened it in cs6 it worked.

    Hi LeGrandCorbeau,
I had the same issue and solved, here is how:
Opened a new project and instead of choosing presets I selected resolution as 2048*1152 and 25fps which was the same with my ProRes footage and preview file format to I-Frame Only MPEG everything everthing got just fine!
    Good Luck

  • Export for DVD with Animation codec without alphas channels not working?

I'm using FCP 5 with DVDSP. My FCP projects consist of quicktime movies that are using the Animation compressor (for lossless quality), and the movies contain alpha channels (thus they were rendered at Millions + colors to preserve the alphas).
This is my problem. I want to now export a quicktime movie to use in DVDSP with animation compression, so it is again lossless quality (obviously to presever the quality through these steps). But I do NOT want to preserve the alpha channels, because what I've learned is that when made into a DVD, the alphas are not preserved and the image looks wrong (as if without the alphas).
So I basically want to "flatten" the video, if there was some way.
I would assume the solution would be to, in FCP, export a quicktime at animation compression, but set to Millions for colors, and not Millions + (I was taught that the Millions + will preserve the alpha info).
Well, what's happening is when I set it to that, it renders, but then I get info on the movie in Quicktime and it says it has Millions + still. And thus, it looks wrong in DVDSP.
What is going on? Is this a bug in FCP?
Does anyone have an idea as to how to get around this. The only thing that has worked for me is to export the Quicktime movie with "none" for compression, but that's making the movie SO large that I can't work with it and it doesn't play right when I make the DVD.
I really appreciate anyones help on the matter. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions. I have not yet tried laying a solid black video track underneath to see what it does, but it seems like a good idea and I'll try it out to see what happens when I get back home.
I'll try to explain what I mean by the image looking wrong.
I'm picking up where another left off, so I'm not sure of how he cut the quicktime movie together; all I know is that they used alpha channels in Photoshop and After Effects to make the image looks the way they want it. This is a drawn character laid on a white background with a black frame around the entire image. It looks the way he wants it to in the quicktime movie, and this quicktime movie is 720x480, animation millions colors +, 24fps.
This movie, along with others of the like, need to be cut together in FCP and then put on a DVD with DVDSP. When I export it and it looks "wrong", what's happening is there is a black block behind the drawn character. The guy that made the movies in AE says that, that is what it looks like when the alpha channel is not working correctly.
To test things, I've changed the quicktime compression settings in the sequence settings. If I set it to anything that is not animation, I get that black block in the viewer. (Note though, that if I set it to animation, millions + or not +, it shows the alpha correctly both ways).
In FCP's user manual it says that if you're passing your movie on to a DVD, to use a high or lossless compression to keep the quality up, like animation or PhotoJPEG. For this reason, I haven't wanted to go to DV - especially with this type of image (graphic drawn shapes), it's easy to see a quality difference.
It really seems like there is a lot of voodoo involved with compression settings. As for now the best "fool-proof" solution I've found is to re-render the movie in After Effects at millions (not+) so that it won't contain the alpha channel info, and FCP seems to like that a lot more.
I just wish I could get FCP to work with the movies as they were because I'm having to re-edit everything to work with these new movies now.
Thanks again for the tips and insight.

  • Problem importing animation codec video from Motion.

Whenever I import a movie I made in motion at the preset animation codec Final Cut does not seem to recognize all of the layers. In one project in particular the text shows, but the background does not. Whenever I open the movie in Quicktime everything shows fine...however when I import it in Final Cut it leaves out layers of the project.
    I do not understand.

It has something to do with the alpha channel. When I export with a solid backgroud, no transparency, it is fine. When I export wiht an alpha channel but tell final cut to ignore it....it works fine. But when teh alpha channel is set to straight, black or white....hte light wall does not show up.

  • Problems with 16x9 HD Footage

I'm having a problem with my footage having a black bar on the top and bottom. I have tried different settings for outputting and nothing seems to work. I'm shooting on the panasonic 200a in 720p, 16x9. The sequence settings are DVProd 720, 30fps when I log and transfer. When editing and outputting, there is a black bar. I've tried anamorphic settings, but that seems to put my black bar within the 16x9 and even smaller. What am I doing wrong?

Yes, the black bars or letterboxing are on the viewer and the canvas. I even have the settings set to fit to screen and that doesn't help, even though the default is a 4/3 screen, I can expand it to 16x9 size but it is still letterboxed.
the Item properties for the sequence are vid rate: 29.97, Frame Size 720x480, Compressor MEG-4 Video, Pixel Aspect NTSC CCIR 601
The source of my video is from a panasonic 220a shooting in DVPro720p, letterboxed. I use the log and transfer in FCP to get the footage across.

  • How big a drive for 3 hours of video encoded with animation codec?

Sorry if this seems a strange question - but I've run out of fingers and toes to count on.
I'm planning a video project that will have approx three hours of selected video to work with. Will be cut down to approx 90 minutes.
The video will be include a lot of chroma keying and also be graphic heavy. Many alpha channels.
I have determined the best work method is to upload the video using the Apple Animation codec. I am reliably informed that said Animation codec is a hungry bugger and eats up drive space.
Can anyone with more toes and fingers than me give me a ballpark for how big an external drive I should budget for this?
So to recap that's a a minimum of three hours of video encoded using the Apple Animation codec plus all the graphics, audio and rendering.
    Many thanks.
    A.S

The Animation codec isn't an editing codec. You'll have a DICKENS of a time trying to work with that.  Besides needing VERY fast drives...I'm talking a 4-5 drive RAID with 300+MB/s throughput (Firewire won't cut it...eSATA would be pushing it..thunderbolt? Pushing it)...it'd still stutter on playback. No one edits with that codec. I mean no one. It's a good way to transport media LOSSLESSLY, but when editing...best to use an Editing Codec.  As Michael said, ProRes 4444 would be good...even ProRes HQ is good enough quality. I deliver shows to air in that codec.

I tried smoothcam with clip (with the Animation codec) and the analyze process never started. I converted the clip to uncompressed and it worked fine. My question is, is there no way to make smoothcam working with the Animation codec?

    Hi
Your runtime indicates you are using older version of Animate. Pl update your Animate with either 2014.0.1 or 2014.1. The issue mentioned by you should be fixed in these builds.

  • Problems exporting Animation codec from After Effects CS3 to FCP

    Hi,
I wonder if anybody can help: I am having troubles with video transfer from After effects CS3 to FCP 6
my workflow is to edit and export in FCP as quicktime movie - work on the clip in AE and then export as Animation/best quality/Millions of colors+. The footage is SD Pal 1024 x 576.
the problem is that the files don't seem to play back properly in quicktime - very jagged and lots of ghosting. I assume this is due to the memory heavy features of the codec.
However any file over 10 seconds will not be imported into FCP natively and a message reads final cut pro does not support this file type.
I overcame this by opening the clip in quicktime and then exporting again with exactly the same settings - this then reads in FCP - although this seems over the top
I now want to work with a 10 min finished comp in FCP but when I try to do this it picks up the ghosting that had appeared when playback in quicktime. However when rendered/ exported from the FCP timeline it retains the ghosting
in short I can burn a successful DVD of the footage as is from AE but it is not suitable to FCP.
I have tried exporting the clip in quicktime as quicktime DV pal but this retains the ghosting. Is this a hard ware problem or is my work flow wrong?
    thanks
    Paul

Converting from A to B means either a lossy conversion or a significant increase in storage requirements (up to 5x with DV as the starting point). You are best served with keeping conversions to a minimum.

  • Problem with animation and separate CPU intensive thread.

    Hi All,
I'm in the process of writing a Java chess game with a computer AI. I've got everything working except for the animation of the computer making its move. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.
    Here's the problem:
After the computer has finished deciding what move to make (CPU intensive - using standard Minimax w/ Alpha Beta pruning), the thread terminates passing the move to the animation thread (implemented using javax.swing.Timer). My delay is set to 50. But the multiple calls to repaint() in the Timer thread all get collapsed into one (they somehow get bunched up) causing a major display glitch!
Sometimes this happens, sometimes it doesnt. I wanted to know if i could write some kind of wait function to wait until the CPU is free to process quick repaint() requests so that my animation can look descent all the time.
    Thanks for any help.
jairam at ecf dot utoronto dot ca

In the javax.swing.Timer class is a method called
setCoalesque(boolean) (I think I spelled that wrong, but you will find it)
By default the Timer class does exacltly what you mentioned, it merges multiple events into one when the application is too busy. Call setCoalesque(false) to receive all the events from the Timer.
