Problem with USB installer and OS X Mavericks

Hi,
I found an interesting issue with a usb installer for OS X Mavericks where I used the  Terminal to evoke OS X Mavericks disk maker utility. The boot able drive was created successfully and I erased my OS X partition and proceeded to install via the USB recovery utility. Unfortunately, while I was installing OS X Mavericks via this usb during the end of the installation the hard drive in my MacBook stopped functioning and apparently it was my computer going into sleep mode, although the monitor was turned on. I just noticed that the progress bar while the installer is unpacking just stopped and got stuck in the counter while saying about a second.
I tried two times installing via the recovery utility and to my surprise the issue occurred again. Therefore I am not using the internet recovery option for OS X and recovering from a Time Machine back up and should be back in Mountain Lion shortly. I think I am going ahead and install in place to avoid further issues and waste of my time.
Therefore, my question is, has anyone experience something similar to what I have described here while using an OS X Mavericks bootable usb installer?
Many thanks for your time and assistance.

Apparently, I am not the only one with this issue this is what an ArsTechnica viewer wrote:
Does the USB Stick installer only work on the computer where it was generated, e.g. due to pre-selected hardware drivers or something? I downloaded 10.9 on an iMac 27" 2011 and created the installer on a 8 GB USB 2.0 stick on that same machine, as described above.
However installation on a (test) MacBook Pro 13" mid 2010 did not work (existing installation was 10.8.5, in case that matters).
I booted successfully from the stick (holding the option key after turning on the MBP), wiped out the hard disk from the Disk Tool, then went on with the installation.
A progress bar appeared, saying something like "Preparing installation. Will automatically restart." The progress bar came to an end, saying "about a second" - and hung forever.
I then quit the installer manually after some minutes of waiting and rebooted without the USB stick, but no bootable partition was found (a blinking disk or so appeared).
I retried twice, noticing that no hard disk noise was to be heard while the progress bar moved (probanly some fixed time interval in the setup routine). Additionally in the Log window there appeared just one line from the very beginning like "Can not connect to /var/run/systemkeychaincheck.socket: No such file or directory"
Exactly like described here by someone else:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5474543?tstart=0
(In fact there are several such entries).
What does the installer do at this point? I am currently re-installing the previous 10.8 via Internet Recovery (the download speed is as expected and steady - so I don't think the Installer is stuck by trying to download something while "Preparing the installation" - or would it?

I am going to try my luck with the OS X Mavericks installer using the DiskMaker X utility once I upgrade in place using Mavericks.

    Hi
I've got a similar problem.  iTunes v10.2 worked fine, but when I tried to update it to 10.5 I got a 'Bonjour' error.  I eventually solved that but I still couldn't upgrade to 10.5, so I deleted every single Apple, Quicktime, iTunes, etc file on my PC using Revo Unistaller (because the normal Windows Add/Delete programs wouldn't work) but now, when I install the latest iTunes version from scratch (on XP SP3), it says: "the installer encountered errors before it could be configured.... your system has not been modified"
    Any ideas?

  • [K8N NEO3-F] Problem with USB keyboard and PS2 mouse after upgrading BIOS

    Hello everyone!
I have upgraded BIOS from 1.1 to 1.4... I have Sempron 2600 (64bit) so BIOS v.1.1 did not recognise it.
The motherboard works, but after upgrading I have a small problem with my keyboard and mouse.
When I use USB keyboard my PS2 mouse doesn't work. When I connect PS2 keyboard mouse works!!!
Can you tell me what's wrong?
    Thanks, bartull@
PS. Does BIOS v.1.3 recognise Sempron 64bit? Can you give me a link to it?

I think that the problem may have been caused by flashing either with liveupdate or with winflash.  I had the problem when i used winflash correctly (shutting down all programs, checking all the boxes to clear bootblock and cmos) but had usb keyboard connected during flash.  My suggestion is to reflash with floppy to last bios version that worked using only ps2 mouse and keyboard with the following instructions:
DOS floppy flash shall be performed with :
    awfl833d.exe w7030nms.180 /py /sn /wb /cc /cd /cp /f /e
(Replace biosfilename with appropriate version for Neo1/neo2 etc , switches remain the same )
    After flash is complete :
TURN OFF PSU (don't restart) wait 15 seconds
Turn on again , press the power button .
Enter BIOS and load optimized defaults (NO OTHER CHANGES) , save + exit
Boot the system again with the floppy in the drive to let the DMI pool build and update itself .
If that works, then reflash to the bios you tried before with the same procedure.  Once you have stable system with ps2 keyboard and mouse working, re-enter bios and enable usb and keyboard support as a lot of bios' have it disabled by default for some strange reason.
    Good luck.

  • Problems with USB connection and PC Suite

Connecting your device to the PC via USB doesn´t always work as smooth as it should. You can either use the setup´s repair function or if you are experiencing more serious problems, you need to uninstall all Nokia software form your phone and get it back on to make to work again.
This is how you do it:
Run the Nokia PC Suite setup file again and choose "repair" instead of "uninstall". This should solve some of the connectivity problems. If it didn´t work for you continue with the instructions below.
Go to Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Software, there you need to uninstall all Nokia software (Nokia PC Suite, Nokia Cable driver, PC Connectivity Solution ...)
Download and run Nokia PC Suite Cleaner
    Reboot your computer
Download and install PC Suite here.
Connect your phone via USB cable (if possible use a different USB jack) and follow the instructions on the screen.
Now you´re set up to manage your phone with PC Suite!

  • Problems with USB port and song transferring;

Hi! I just got an iPod and I am having problems with it. My computer doesn't have a Hi-Speed USB port, even if it's 9 months old. Some of my friends don't have it either but they still are able to transfer songs onto their iPod. For mine, it keeps saying "Do Not Disconnect." I waited for 5 hours last time I got it and it still isn't working.
I also updated my iPod software today and the iPod icon isn't appearing on the bar to the left in iTunes. I'd really appreciate any help on this! As well as if I really need to do something about the ports or if it could function like this normally.

  • Airport Extreme - problem with usb printer and usb disk

I have Airport extreme with firmware 7.1. I try connect usb disk and usb printer with usb-hub to airport. I can't get disk or printer working. Also try connect only disk or printer without usb-hub to airport getting same problem. How I get disk and printer working with wireless network (windows pc computers)?
    1)
    My printer is HP PSC 1210 all-in-one ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=90764&lc=fi&cc=fi&dlc=fi&lang =fi&cc=fi&y=0&x=0 )
    - printer seems working fine after installing bonjour printer installing wizard.
    - I get error (in windows) when I try print document from word. Error only says "error printing" in status value.
    - In airport utility all seems ok. Airport see usb printer "Hewlett-Packard psc 1200 series"
    - printer protocol is RAW and driver manufacture HP (also try with microsoft driver)
    2)
USB disk is Targa Databox II 250
    - Airport utility says "Disk needs repair. Errors were found with a disk connected to your airport base station. please connect the usb disk to your mac or pc and use disk utility or another disk application to repair the disk"
    - I have connected Targa usb disk to windows pc and run scandisk and defreg. No errors found in windows. Result..no help for airport

I have a similar problem to your second issue. Tried connecting a Netdisk to the USB port of the Airport Extreme and it also said there was a problem with the disk. Have performed a low level format on the disk and Airport Extreme still complained the disk had a problem.
After unplugging the disk, my route decided to stop allowing wireless connections even after rebooting. Ended up having to hard reset the Airport Extreme and reconfigure it with my old settings to work again.
FWIW, the first Airport Extreme I purchased today only worked on 802.11a and steadfastly refused to work on b/g so had to get a replacement. I suspect Apple's quality control is not quite as good as it used to be.

  • Problem with USB speakers and new Mac Mini

I have a USB sound system consisting of a pair of Harman Kardon soundsticks and a woofer from probably 10 years ago (bought and used originally with a Mac). I have tried driving it my new Mac Mini. It works fine for about a minute; then the music stops. Here's what I've tried to diagnose the problem:
    1. The problem does not occur when these speakers are driven from my Macbook Air (about 3 years old).
    2. The OS and iTunes software is up to date on both machines (10.9.5 and 12.0.1.26).
    3. It does not depend on which USB port I use on the Mac Mini.
    4. Using a port on a USB extender on the Mac Mini does not solve the problem.
    5. The iTunes Preference settings are the same on both machines.

  • Is there a problem with USB speakers and Final Cut Express HD?

I have audio only through my internal speaker for Final Cut - however all other sounds play through my USB Harman Kardon speakers fine.
I have tried sending the audio out to my M-Audio head too - and that has been fruitless.
I am really frustrated - I reinstalled the OS. And ran it with only Final Cut and the OS and still have the same issues. Even if I drag an MP3 into Final Cut it plays through the internal speaker. I also notice that the audio really lags behind the video when it plays through the internal speaker - if that means anything. I have made sure that the Canvas Setting is correct.
Tech support for the most part has been nice, but they are unable to help me.
Please help!!!! And thanks in advance.

  • Problems with USB port and connecting ipod?

So I recently got a Macbook Pro Retina and I'm having some trouble with my USB ports especially when syncing my ipod is involved. For some reason, the ipod has trouble connecting and it fluctuates from connecting to not connecting and sometimes, the computer says USB devices are disabled. I've looked this up before and tried the PRAM reset or whatever, but it still doesn't work. I'm not really sure what's going on because when I try to charge the ipod with a wall charger, it works perfectly fine. However, trying to charge it with my computer is a different story. I've tried charging my ipod from both sides of the port but it still does not work. (Also can someone explain how to know whether the USB is 3.0 or 2.0?) Thank you:) This problem does not involve my ipod because I recently just got it back from servicing.

I went through all said steps.
It is not acknowledging the fact that I have my iPod plugged in at all under the Universal Serial Bus. Or that fact that the USB port is plugged in.
    Any more advice??
Thank you so much for any and all help!

  • Problem with usb-ports and keyboard

Hi.I reinstaledl windows xp sp3,downloaded all drivers from this site and now i have a problem. When I push any key on keyboard-my usb-ports dont working. Its like they dont get power supply.Sorry for my bad english. And then I stop to push-usb ports start to work. What can I do?Thanks.

    hi tony7161,
    Welcome to the forums.
It looks like there's a short somewhere when you touch that keyboard and causes the USB ports to stop. May I know what lenovo computer do you have?  Have you tried booting into safe mode (you need to press F8 upon boot-up and choose Safe Mode) to see if the issue persists?
    Let me know your findings.
    Cheers.

  • TS3212 I get the file download window and I push "run", but after it starts to install, I get a window that says that they was a problem with the installation and I need to check with the manufacturer of my software. WHat does that mean?

I get to the file download window to install itunes and push run, but after it starts to install, it stops and I get an error message that installation can no continue and everything is uninstalled. It tells me to check with my software company to resolve. What does that mean?

    Repair your Apple software update.
Go to START/ALL PROGRAMS/Apple Software Update. If it offers you a newer version of Apple Software Update, do it but Deselect any other software offered at the same time. Once done, try another iTunes install
If you don't find ASU, go to Control Panel:
START > CONTROL PANEL > Add n Remove Programs / highlight ASU and click CHANGE then REPAIR,

Hi! I just bought Lion and I am having a problem with the installation. It keeps telling me that the computer's hard drive has a S.M.A.R.T. problem. How can I solve it?
    Thanks!
    Angela

You may have a hard drive problem. When I installed Lion, the installer told me that it couldn't complete because the hard drive was failing (or broken, the exact words escape me). Since the HD had been functioning just fine, I took it to the Genius Bar, and found out that yes, the hard drive was slowly dying (bad sectors). I couldn't reboot into Snow Leopard, the installer wouldn't let me and then the drive just wouldn't work at all.
I had to replace my drive and restore from Time Machine. Thankfully, I had Time Machine, and had just done a backup 5 minutes before the crash.
    Best of luck.

  • Satellite M70-190 - problem with USB

    Hi!
After uninstall Windows XP and BIOS update, i have a problem with USB ports. My USB flash drive does't work. Windows find it as USB flash drive, but i can't find it in "My computer"
So have anyone idea about this problem?
PS External HDD works perfect, as USB mouse, and USB WiMax modem.
Im hoping someone out there can help with this problem.

Is described issue the same on all USB ports?
I mean, I have Satellite M70-159 in front of me and since long time I use 8GB SanDisc and 2GB Toshiba USB stick and both devices are recognized properly.
I still use original Toshiba WXP installation (updated of course).

  • Problems with Mail, Safari and iTunes after updating to 10.5.6

    Hi all,
after installing 10.5.6 I have problems with Mail, Safari and iTunes.
The time to open mails, websides and iTunes store is increasing dramatically since the update. If I open a webside parallel with Safari and Firefox, Safari needs minimum 15 times longer to open the complete side. Mails containing HTML-code also needs a long time to be opened. Tha same Problem with iTunes store. Connecting to the Store costs at least 30 - 40 seconds. And unfortunately for every iTunes store side I open. Its terrible
Any idea or workaroung to solve that problem?
    Regards
    Michael

First, run Disk Utility and repair permissions and then restart.
I installed the 10.5.6 Combo update. Sometimes things get "lost in the translation" when you use Software Update depending on your installation. Perhaps you can download 10.5.6 Combo from the website and install it from your desktop.

  • Problems with itunes 8 and ipod shuffle gen 2.

Problems with itunes 8 and ipod shuffle gen 2.
I recently upgraded from itunes 7 to itunes 8 on my windows XP PC. That's when i had issues syncing my 2nd gen shuffle.
When i try to drag songs directly on it, itunes says i can't
I made a playlist and use auto fill. But when I remove it from the dock, it's either not updated, or the new songs are at the bottom of the playlist when they are supposed to be up higher. I end up having to hit auto fill twice to make it sync correctly.
    Computer Specs
    Windows XP SP3
384MB of Ram (works really good)
    USB 1.1 connection
Pentium 4 clocked at 1.285 GHZ
    IPOD Shuffle Specs
    2nd Generation
    1GB (964MB)
    Version 1.0.4
unchecked options: open itunes when ipod is attached, Sync only checked songs, convert higher bit rate songs to 128kbps AAC, Enable sound check, Limit MAX volume, enable disk use
All those are NOT checked. Sometimes i enable disk use for seeing the IPOD_Control folder, but either way it still messes up.
    Itunes Specs:
    Version 8.1.1.10

This is a well-known issue. Apple changed the internal file names used with iTunes 8, which makes the ordering on 2nd generation Shuffles behave differently. There is no good workaround, apart from moving the files with a hand-crafted AppleScript program.
Apple has been silent on the issue, so nobody knows if we'll ever have a fix for it or not.
