Problems compiling jsp on Tomcat

I am getting an error message when I try to run jsp files on the Tomcat server. It runs the txt files fine. Using the 8080 port. Any suggestions about what is going wrong? This is my first time to run jsp or Tomcat on this computer. Thank you. Sorry for the long error message.

It looks like you are trying to run with java 1.5

  • Problems compiling jsps using WLS6.1sp3 as Win2k service

    Two related issues:
    Issue #1:
    I'm encountering an error where the javac compiler cannot be found (when
    trying to compile jsps) when running as a Windows Service. JAVA_HOME is set
    in the profile and I'm passing in E:\bea\jdk131\bin in the extrapath
    parameter of beasvc.exe. The error I get is a file permission exception -
    unable to access (read) C:\WINNT\System32\javac. Question is - why is it
    looking there and not in JAVA_HOME? To try and isolate this, I've removed
    everything from the PATH and CLASSPATH environment variables except for
    E:\bea\jdk131\bin but to no avail.
    Issue #2:
    I've also tried hard-coding the location E:\bea\jdk131\bin\javac.exe into
    the config.xml and weblogic.xml. The error is then a file permission
    exception - unable to access (read) .\E:\bea\jdk131\bin\javac. Note the
    initial dot-slash... however, the weblogic.policy file is set to allow
    read,execute access for all files and directories below E:\bea (I've even
    tried to grant a permission to .\E:\....... but that didn't work either)
    Hope someone can help - it's been driving me nuts for a week now! What do I
    need to do to get Weblogic to find javac when running as a Windows Service?

    You say you have set up the environment variables, but it is not working. You may have them set to the wrong thing. One common mistake is to point JAVA_HOME at the java/bin directory rather than just the /java directory.
    Another set of eyes finds small mistakes in the variables that you might not spot yourself.
    So please, post:
    The values of these environment variables
    The path to where the products are installed on your system (ie is it c:\java or c:\j2se1_4_2 or c:\program files?
    I would take another close look at that JAVA_HOME variable to make sure of it :-)
    Good luck,

  • Cookie Problem  With JSP and Tomcat

    I have a tiny web application developed for my project thing.
    I am facing a problem while maintaining sessions with Cookie. I use Tomcat 3.2.1 Web Server and JSP 1.2 Specifications for my web application.
    I have created a page which creates a cookie and stores it in the client's PC, so when the same client visits the site, he can be remembered. Now while surfing the site in the same session, the site remembers the client. But once the client closes the browser and tries connecting to the site, he cannot be remembered. So I took a look into Temporary Internet Files of the client PC and found no cookie there. So where the cookie gets created and why does it disappears with the session. I have set a time limit of 1 year in the cookie.
    Now is that a Problem with Tomcat or with the configuration settings of IE in the client PC?? Or something else???
    Reply me Soon...

    Thanks for your reply.
    following is the code for how do i create a cookie...
    <%
         String custno = custBean.createPreferred();
         Cookie c = new Cookie("pc", custno);
         c.setVersion(1);
         c.setPath("/");
         c.setComment("PreferredCustomer");
         c.setDomain("think_machine");
    //think_machine is the name of the Web Server(Tomcat)
         c.setMaxAge(365*24*60*60);
         response.addCookie(c);
    %>
    And the code to read a cookie is..
         String custID = null;
         Cookie[] cookies = request.getCookies();
         for(int i = 0; i < cookies.length; i++)
              if(cookies.getName().equals("pc"))
                   custID = cookies[i].getValue();
                   break;
    One more thing I would like to let you know, that i access this from the same PC on which the Web Server is installed. Means the Server and the client are both one and the same PC.

    The above mention code are the only JSP script on the page.
    I have package builder defined under WEB-INF\classes and the class MenuBuilder and all related classes are in the pacakge and are compiled.
    I am using Tomcat 4.1.24 running on JDK 1.4.1 (build 1.4.1_02-b06).
    Other JSP pages in the same context which does not reffer any class under WEB-INF\classes are being displayed so are pages under examples context.
    Can anybody help me out on what i am missing.
    Thanks in advance
    Amitabh

    Hi,
    AFAIK, builer package shoud be under WEB-INF\classes directory or the context. It is under that direcory.
    As far as adding the package to system classpath or Tomcat classpath, I dont want to do that as it would contaminate the classpath of other applications/contexts.
    The applications server is supposed to automatically add WEB-INF\classes into the classpath of the context. And its working for other context.
    There has to be other solution.
    Regards
    Amitabh

  • Problem compiling JSP

    I tried one example from the tutorial for developing in J2EE, well I have this JSP page with this code:
    <%@ page import="Converter,ConverterHome,javax.ejb.*, java.math.*, javax.naming.*, javax.rmi.PortableRemoteObject, java.rmi.RemoteException" %>

    } catch (RemoteException ex) {
    System.out.println("Couldn't create converter bean."+ ex.getMessage());
    } catch (CreateException ex) {

    and I deployed this application, but when I started server gets this message:

    [javac] ^
    [javac] 2 errors
    This is very strange it looks like it doesn't recognize classes to import
    Thanx in forward.

    Probably you are looking at some older example code.
    As of Java 1.4, it is no longer possible for Tomcat to find classes that are not in a package. ALL java classes should be in a package in order to work with Tomcat.
    This change to the JDK broke a lot of simple example/tutorial code which didn't use packages.
    Solution:
    Modify the classes Converter.java and ConverterHome.java to be in a package
    eg
    package com.mypackage
    public class Converter
    -> /WEB-INF/classes/com/mypackage/Converter.class
    Alternative solution: find a newer tutorial which doesn't provide examples where classes are not in packages.

    You can load the JSP in the browser and add a jsp_precompile parameter, something like:
    http://yourwebsite.com/yourwebpage.jsp?jsp_precompile
    Any mistakes will end up being displayed in the browser, but the JSP will never get executed should it contain no programming mistakes.

    This is a new problem with jdk1.4 when compiling with tomcat.
    The solution is to ensure that any classes in WEB-INF/classes are in a package structure and the relevant jsp calls the same using the package name.

  • Urgent Solution needed--Problem in JSP compilation with JDK 1.5 and JDK 1.6

    Hi,
    I m using JDK 1.5 and Tomcat 5.0 the problem is that after starting server when I m going to access my application at that time instead of displaying HomePage it directly display the blank page on screen.
    After analyzing tomcat log I have found that there was a problem with JSP page compilation.
    The exception logged in Tomcat Log is given below
    An error occurred at line: 1 in the generated java file
    The type Collection is not generic; it cannot be parameterized with arguments <? extends E>

    After getting this kind of error I have analyzed my code furhter then I came to know that there was problem with static include tag.
    In my jsp page I have used following line which is the main cause of error
    <%@ include file="top.jsp" %>If I ommit this line then it is working properly.
    Instead of static include I have used jsp:include also.
    Still I m getting same problem.
    We have to migrated from JDK 1.5 to 1.6 and Tomcat 5.0.28 to 6.0.14, still same problem is there.
    We have tried a lot but didnt get success to overcome this problem.
    If anybody having any solution then ur each reply will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance..........!!!!!!!

    Hi "mshanu" and "amit" Thanks for ur replies Here I m posting the code of "top.jsp"........!!!!
    <%@ page errorPage="errordisplay.jsp"%>
    <table cellpadding="0"
           cellspacing="0"  height=50 width=780>
           <tbody>
             <tr class="header">
               <td class="logo"><IMG SRC="assets/Logo.gif" BORDER=0 ALIGN=top></td>
               <td align="right"><span class="applicationtitle"><%@ include file="/contents/logo.htm" %></span><br>
               <span class="companyname"><%@ include file="/contents/companyname.htm" %></span></td>
             </tr>
            </tbody>
    </table>To include top.jsp I have tried
    <jsp:include page="top.jsp" flush="true">
    </jsp:include>
             AND
    <%@ include file="top.jsp"%>but none of this worked.
    If I remove the include then It is working properly.
    But I need inluded file too so that I am wondoring for the solution.
    This problem seems very wiered to me. I dont know why it is happening.
    This problem is started only when I used the TOMCAT 6.14.
    Is it the bug of TOMCAT 6.14 or What somebody Plz help.
    I got stuck here.........!!!!!!!!!!
    It doesn't seem any problem with top.jsp. As per my thinking the problem is there in include due to that it doesn't compile the JSP page in Tomcat 6.0.
    Earlier I am having same code running on the Tomcat 5.0.28 and JDK 1.5.0.
    But problem occured when I have used Tomcat 6.x...!!

  • Having problems compiling *.java with import javax.servlet.jsp......

    I've been trying to do the tutorials in a book titled Apache Jakarta-Tomcat as part of my introduction to JSP. I'm new to Java but do know the basics. I have on my machine Java 1.3, Java 1.4, Java FrameWorks 2.1 and Jython 2.1 on Win2000 Pro. So enough about my configuration. I have never worked with packages also.
    I downloaded the files from the books site due to the fact I make a lot of typos when hand coding Java (I've become a pretty good debugger of my own code). But everytime I go to compile the *.java I get error messages. So below you will find HelloTag.java and beneath that the error messages that are thrown when I try and compile it. I tested other bits of *.java and have had no problem compiling them. Is there a JSP module I'm missing?
    Am I doing something wrong or am I missing something from my configuration.

    Well, it looks like you've not got the servlet development kit JAR on your classpath. I think it'll probably be called servlet.jar on your system. Add that to the classpath if it's not already there.
    Incidentally, you've bumped into one of the areas Java's slightly lenient - declaring a method that looks like a constructor:
    public HelloTag() { }
    public void HelloTag() { }The first is a constructor, the second is a normal method. I'm assuming you intended to have the former instead of the latter.
    Anyway, hope this helps.

  • JSP and Tomcat Problem

    Folks,
    My apologies if this is off-topic for this forum, but I've been having this problem using Tomcat and JSP. I'm fairly new to Java.
    Basically, I'm writing a webapp that uses servlets and JSP together. The servlet and backend classes all compile fine. Now, basic frontend page is called Console.jsp, and one of the commands that it runs is <%@ page import="DJUser">
    Here's the problem: Console.jsp is in $CATALINA_HOME/webapp/
    DJUser (and the rest of the classes I'm using) are in $CATALINA_HOME/webapp/WEB-INF/classes

    I'm running Tomcat 5.5.12 on Mac OS X 10.4. Could this be a permissions issue somehow? For right now (testing purposes only) I have tomcat running under my (non root) account.
    I've been scouring the web for a while, and I can't really find anything on this. I'd appreciate any help you could give me.
    Thanks!

    Put the DJUser java file in a package (say com.myClasses) and recompile. Then put the DJUser class file under the WEB-INF/classes directory in the proper package structure (WEB-INF/classes/com/myClasses/DJUser). Stop and restart the server to pick up the new classes. Make sure to change the jsp import statement ( <%@ page import="com.myClasses.DJUser">)

    Hi Kuba
    I guess you are getting this error in Linux Env and not Windows. Basically SOA/BPM opens lots of files (JARs and WARs) and I guess it do not close them properly. The root cause for your error is something else. Here is the fix. This should work.
    Login into the linux machine with the root user privileges. Or ask the person who have root privileges to do this. Basically you have to increase the open file limits to much bigger number like 8192.
    To change the open file limits, login as root and edit the /etc/security/limits.conf file. If the following lines are already there, just change the number to 8192. Otherwise add below 2 lines exactly. Means for all the users on this OS, the nofiles is set to 8192, instead of single user.
    * hard nofile 8192
    * soft nofile 8192
    after this, make sure to RESTART the Linux box. Otherwise changes will not get reflected.
    Login into unix box from any client and run this command and it should return 8192
    ulimit -n
    Then start the soa server and you should be all set. Let me know if this fixes your issue (I am hoping it should).
    Thanks
    Ravi Jegga
