Problems in terminal

When I open a terminal I got the following message and do not have any idea how to fix the problem.
Last login: Sat Jan 19 23:13:07 on console
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LC_ALL = (unset),
LANG = "UTF-8"
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").

It looks like the Execution string is set in your Terminal plist. Start by deleting your ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Terminal.plist. You will have to reconfigure the Terminal app after doing this.

  • Problem with Terminal.app - unable to input '^' (Shift + 6)

    Hello everyone,
I'm experiencing a strange problem with Terminal since this morning: I'm not able to input symbol '^' (Shift + 6) in any terminal application. Both Terminal.app and iTerm.app show the same problem. I'm able to input '^' in all other applications, as you can see, without any problem. Is it something related to key bindings? Anybody with similar problems?
    Thanks,
    Luca

What terminal emulation are you using? Which shell? I suggest you look into whatever terminal emulation you are using. Try googling for the type of terminal emulation you are using to see if that sheds any light on this issue.

  • Weird problem in terminal (xfce)

Like the title says I have a weird problem with Terminal (terminal 0.4.6-1 (xfce4)). The problem is that after scrolling, after maybe between 0.5 to 1 seconds the text scrolls a bit more as if I turned the scroll wheel one more notch, which I haven't.
I have only noticed this today after updating to the latest kernel and Xorg and from pacman's logs terminal was updated yesterday (I did update not long before turning my computer off so I might have missed the problem then). Downgrading to terminal 0.4.5-2 seems to solve the problem for now.
The same problem does not happen in xterm or urxvt or any other programs that I've tried but I'd like to have some confirmation that at least someone else can replicate this before filling a bug report.
I can add that starting xev from terminal will show that in fact there is some key even being received, however if xev is started from xterm I do not see any problems.

It's very likely that this is ATI related indeed.
I've had console-lag issues with ATI cards before and I still have them now and then, especially with a rotated monitor, but never this one. Radeon driver for me as well with KMS enabled. RS880 (HD 4250)
    ~/.Xdefaults appears to be irrelevant.

  • Updated to Mavericks and have problems in terminal with bash

    Hi,
After a number of years of being really happy with my Macbook Pro, Snow Leopard, I updated to Maverics. Amongst other problems with numerous apps, I ve come across a problem with terminal environment. Specifically when I startup a terminal shell I get these errors:
-bash: .bashrc: No such file or directory
-bash: /usr/local/auto/07p/cmds/auto.env.sh: No such file or directory
    ': not a valid identifier
-bash: /auto/07p/cmds/auto.env.sh: No such file or directory
for some reason I cannot set .sh environments and I also have a problem running python commands on command line for an analysis software AUTO07p (http://indy.cs.concordia.ca/auto/) such as @pp or @R
    Can any one help?

    Hi,
Thanks for the prompt response. I do have a bash_profile and it looks like that
    . .bashrc
    source /usr/local/auto/07p/cmds/auto.env.sh
    source /Users/myprofile/auto/07p/cmds/auto.env.sh
    source /auto/07p/cmds/auto.env.sh
    # Added by Canopy installer on 2014-04-24
    # VIRTUAL_ENV_DISABLE_PROMPT can be set to '' to make bashprompt show that Canopy is active, otherwise 1
    VIRTUAL_ENV_DISABLE_PROMPT=1 source /Users/myprofile/Library/Enthought/Canopy_64bit/User/bin/activate
    # Setting PATH for EPD_free-7.2-2
    # The orginal version is saved in .bash_profile.pysave
    PATH="/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/bin:${PATH}"
    export PATH
I m not sure whether the Canopy additions are causing a problem.
What do you mean creating a new account? Like a new profile for my mac?

  • Problem with Terminal.app after upgrade

    Hi,
I just installed Tiger over Panther. Everything went and seems just fine, except:
When I try to run Terminal, I see:
You are not authorized to run this application.
The administrator has set your shell to an illegal value.
I am not sure I understand from the message what is the problem:
    a) Not authorized should mean Unix user permissions, right?
    (In Finder's info window, I see :
    - you can read/write
    - Owner: system
    - Group: admin
    - Access: r/w
Seems bad as I am supposed to rwx, but that I guess is just Finder-specific simplification:-).
    From the other hand,
    b) an "illegal value" (whatever it is - say /bin/mabooka) should be possible to just change - ?
    How?
The Terminal is not giving me any options except "Quit".
The box is single-user, the admin is myself...
Please help if you saw something similar... Thanks!

    Thanks Ali,
It was hard to find the solution in search list, but it was there.
    The correct answer is:
    ================
Re: Terminal: Not authorized to run app... shell has an illegal value?!!
Posted: Jun 3, 2006 6:57 PM in response to: Eric Bigham
    Helpful
Click on Terminal.app to select it, CMD+I, and check the ownership and permissions. It should show that you have R&W. If so, then drag ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Terminal.plist file to the desktop, log out and back in, and try launching it again.
    ================
Also it was entertaining to read and then use Netinfo Manager:
Using this utility, I've found that my shell was set to "bin/tc" (instead of /bin/tcsh, as I set it years ago on Panther).
    Apparently:
    1) there is a bug in installation (who else could change "tsch" to "tc"?!?);
    2) there is a bug in the message ("You are not authorized..."): -- nothing to do with authorization.
In any case, the problem's been solved, many thanks.

  • Problem with terminal in tiger

    Hi,
Running 10.4.11 on my Powerbook, have used Terminal a couple of times, mostly for the games. Suddenly it won't work-- when I open up Terminal and type "emacs" here is what I get:
dumpemacs: Must be run as root unless -n is used
emacs: child exited with status 1
Typing "emacs -n" doesn't work, either.
I have repaired permissions on my HD, did that make Terminal dysfunctional? I've repaired permissions again after I had this problem but it obviously didn't fix the issue, so I suspect that's totally irrelevant.
Please help me, it is very important I get back to my therapy sessions with Eliza!

Are you using an administrator account? Try this:
    sudo emacs
You'll be asked for an administrator password. Enter it (don't worry about the lack of *s showing up; they're not supposed to), and you should be good to go.
Also, try hand checking the permissions on the emacs executable. In a Finder window, hit Command-Shift-G, type "/usr/bin" (without the quotes) and then scroll to emacs. Select it, and hit Command-I, then check out the permission and make sure it's executable.

  • Problems with terminal application - characteristic HD noises

    Hi,
I hope you can advise me for the rather obscure problem I am having. I have installed Darwin ports and am using the python app hellanzb, which is an automated usenet downloader. The problem that I have is that now, when starting up the terminal for the first time, quitting the terminal or opening a new shell, the system grinds to a halt for approx. 30s, during which time the HD spins in a consistent way. (dot-d-dot, dot-d-dot, dash, dash as it happens). Now I can understand this happening if the python app is already working but the fact that the behaviour is repeated when the hellanzb app is not working is confusing me.
The obvious solution would be to get rid of darwin ports but some of the programs that darwin ports enables have been handy to me (the R stats program).
Any ideas or has anyone else encountered this minor (but annoying glitch)?
    Thanks for reading.
    iMac G4 800 MHz 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   768Mb RAM

Trashing the preference file brought up the terminal window much faster - it defaulted to the tcsh. I was previously using the bash shell and when I changed the shell in the terminal preferences file, the hard disk whirring pattern described above started again and the terminal prompt took ~15s to appear, something that was instantaneous in the tcsh.
I guess that this mean that the problem lies with loading the bash shell. Is there a tcsh equivalent to .bashrc? I have been using bash because my friend told me that it was better than tcsh. Would the best option be to switch to tcsh?
    Thanks for the reply.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot open display: . Problem from Terminal

    Hi,
I have a small problem with X I guess. I hope you can help me, as extensive googleling did not help.
I'm just configuring my arch install (newbie). Everything I have configured so far works great, the documentation is really good. I can start my xfce sessions an everything. However, I just wanted to look something up, when
    $ xfce4-about
    printed the following error:
    xfce4-about: Cannot open display: .
This happened from terminal, not within a xfce-session.
Does anyone have an idea how I should proceed to eliminate this minor problem?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Seems you can't run xfce4-about from the non-X terminal, just like you can't run firefox.

Giving full access to either the folder or the entire HDD did not help.Difference is the Business Object starts by calling his COM object rather then the normal exe for authentication issues and i think it might be a part of the problem. Thanks in advanace and apologies if I posted in the wrong place.

  • HP T410 All-In-One (H2W21AA) serious RDP problem with terminal server

Hi there! The scheme is this:
    HP T410 All-In-One (H2W21AA)
firmware that was out-of-the-box got some graphical problems with RDP, so i updated the Smart Zero Core Image to the latest Z6A44019 Rev. 1 (11 dec 2013). Graphical problem gone, but new, much more unpleasant problem emerged.
This thin client is connected to Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, all updates are up-to-date. Terminal Server.
    the steps:
    - i connect from my machine (W7SP1x64 with latest updates) via RDP (mstsc.exe or tsmmc.mmc - doesn't matter) to the terminal server
    - i open up the remote desktop services manager, right click on the user that's connected from the T410
    - i hit "remote control" button
    - for a moment i see some bits of user's desktop, but in less than a second my RDP session drops with the following error:

the problem is not present for the rest on the terminal users (that are connected from a unix thin clients), i remote control their session without any issues.
Please help me. We are building a new office and planning it for using PoE on every workdesk with your T410 Thin Client. But the fact that i can't manage them remotely brings me a lot of grief.

Hello again! I am sad to tell that my solution was not fully effective - i have got the new problem now
when i remote control session, it connects and works for some time, but at some point (which can be even a second from connection) it disconnects, throws me back to my admin session, and on the client side of t410 the following message appears:

  • APPLET DELETION PROBLEM: CARD TERMIN AL ERROR

    Hello.
I have developed several on-card packages. First is the library package (package1), containing no applets. And the other package (package2) contains serverApllet that uses libraries from the package1. The strange problem occurs during the deletion of the serverApplet package2. It has to be deleted first, only then a library package1 can be deleted.
I've implemented uninstall() method of the serverApplet, that sets all references to the library instances to null and requests Objects deletion. The problem is:
    that after calling:
delete -r |package2  //i.e. server package deletionJCOP Shell always returns JCException:
jcshell: Error code: -6 (Card Terminal error)
jcshell:Communication problems: nullIt allways happens, when I am deleting package2. After i connect to the same simulation session, there is no more serverApllet package2, i.e. it was deleted. Then a library package1 can be successfully deleted.
Could anyone tell me what might be the reason of such an error?
Now i am trying the deletion only in simulator. I am not sure in trying it on-card, because i am not sure that i will be able to delte it from the card.
    Thanks for a help,
    Best regards,
    Eve

Yes, your advice was very useful for me. I had to read JCVM and JCRE specification
one time more. And i found out that certainly to make applet and its package deletable:
    1 .no references to static memory can remain (i.e. must be set to null);
    2. in case the shareable interface is used, we must have in mind that no references to server SIO objects must remain. Regarding this second sentence i have to poin, that i found out the example in Java Card Kit v2.2.2 with A, B and C applets using shareable interfaces and static references.
I hope this might help people, who might koin the same problem.
    Thanks, lexdabear.
    Best regards,

  • Adobe Connect Add-in problems on terminal server

Windows 2003 Terminal server, IE7 and Flash version 10,0,12,36 using the Adobe hosted service
Were having problems with the add-in prompting to install though it has been. The add-in was “pre-installed” using the standalone package from the console as an Administrator.
The problem is that having launched a meeting the Administrator can use the add-in, but all other users are prompted to download \ install the add-in (again).  Attempting to download the add-in fails with “A download error occurred, try downloading again”. There are no related errors recorded in the event logs on the server.
I've made calls to numerous Adobe support tel #s in an attempt to get support, or at least some response. Other than giving me another number to call, no one seems interested .

Rob, it sounds like port 1935 is being blocked. Can you verify that that port is open?
Have you gone to the Test Your Computer page for your connect account. After the diagnostics run, choose to send and email and then click on the details... link to see the results of the test.
Here is a link to that page for our hosted account, if that makes it easier: http://realeyesconnect.adobeconnect.com/common/help/en/support/meeting_test.htm
If needed, Connect only requires FP 10.3 or newer. If it comes to it, an older version of the Flash Player can be tested.

  • Emacs problem in Terminal.app

When I edit a text file in the (text-only version) of emacs running in Terminal.app, what happens all the time is that characters in my file get overwritten by spaces (on the terminal only). Pressing Ctrl-L recentres and refreshes the display and it's OK - until it happens again, which is usually right away.
E.g. if I open the file and press down rightarrow, and hold it for autorepeat, the cursor will gradually move through the file, but as I scroll over certain characters, they will be overwritten by spaces on the screen.
The problem only happens in Terminal.app, not also in xterm.
It doesn't matter whether $(TERM) is set to xterm, xterm-color, vt100 etc. in Terminal.app.
I remember this working in previous versions of Mac OS X, but not in 10.4.5 (and as I recall it's not worked for me for a while).
Is this a bug? Does anybody else see this? Or is there some setting I might have inadvertently changed.

The problem was traced to a
    stty -tabs
line in my .login file. It appears that emacs outputs tabs to move around the screen, and those were being expanded to spaces which overwrote my text. Vi apparently does not use tabs in the same way, which is why the problem was limited to emacs.
The reason the problem manifested itself in Terminal.app but not in xterm is that tcsh executed inside a new Terminal.app window executes .login, whereas one executed inside a new xterm window does not.

  • Problem with Terminal

    Hey,
I have exactly the same Problem like the person in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2204986?start=0&tstart=0
I did what was explained in the post of Jun T.:
"I found that, even if "Command (complete path):" is selected (instead of "Default login shell (/usr/bin/login)") the shell is not started directly by Terminal but started via login (as "login -pfq username /path/to/the/shell").
Start Activity Monitor.app, and select "All Processes" from the pop-up menu at the top of the window. Then click onece or twice on the "PID" (title of the left most column of the process list) so that the process list is sorted in the decreasing order of pid (largest pid at the top of the list).
Also start Console.app, and select "All Messages" (or system.log) in in the left pane of the window.
Now start Terminal.app (or open a new window in Terminal). In my case, Activity Monitor shows "login", "zsh" (=my shell) and "taskgated" are started in this order, and taskgated terminates in a 10 seconds or so. Console.app shows the message like [...]"
And the Console.app showed up this after updating:
Analysis of sampling login (pid 568) every 1 millisecond
    Call graph:
        915 Thread_9483   DispatchQueue_1: com.apple.main-thread  (serial)
          915 0x10000143c
            915 0x100001966
              915 ttyname
                915 devname_r
                  915 lstat64
Total number in stack (recursive counted multiple, when >=5):
Sort by top of stack, same collapsed (when >= 5):
            lstat64        915
I'm sorry but I am an absolute newbie in this case and i don't have any idea what to do.
I'm happy for every help you can offer me.
Sorry for my Englisch but I'm from Germany

From the pictures, you are not in a shell. The default shell in Mac OS X is bash, and you should see something like:
    host: username $
in each prompt. The prompt can be modified, but as default you should always see the "$" sign.
From the looks of it, you are running cat. To get out of this, press Ctrl-C . You should then be inside the shell.
    Cheers,
    Lianheng
