Trouble Viewing PDFs in Preview
Hey all,
I am having trouble viewing PDFs in Preview 4.0 on my MacBook Pro, running Leopard (10.5.1). I can Quick Look the documents from my desktop (or any other folder) fine. However, when I double-click the document to open it in Preview, i get nothing. Preview opens, but does not display the document, or anything for that matter. I even tried to open PDFs from the Preview menu, but to no avail.
I just upgraded the internal hard drive, but everything else seems to be working fine, and this seems like a weird issue to be caused by a laptop upgrade.
Any ideas? I tried Disk Utility, but still nothing.
ThanksHi,
Have you tried deleting Preview's pref file? It should be located as a ".plist" file under preferences in your library folder.
Find the file "com.apple.Preview.plist" and move it to the trash for the time being. Run Preview again and see if that'll help. If this fixes it you can safely delete the .plist file that's in the trash.
Good luck. -
Problem viewing pdf in print mode
I am able to download and view pdf files, but when I go to print them I sometimes get a file that looks like the correct pdf file but there is no text in the file. It has the formatting correct, but the text is absent.
I am using Mac OS 10.6.8, Firefox 15.0, and Adobe reader 10.4.1
This problem also occurs with Safari.
Thanks,
MarkMichael,
Thanks for the response but downloading and then opening with Reader produces the same result, a formatted form without text.

Problems viewing PDF's in Safari
Every time I try and open a PDF from Safari 7.0.4 I get this message " before viewing PDF documents in this browser you must launch Adobe Reader and accept the End User Licence Agreement, then quit and relaunch the browser." I am using Adobe Acrobat Pro 11.0.7 and despite changing so that Adobe Reader is the default program for opening PDF's I still get the same message. I have looked at some of the comments on line and none work for me. Any ideas?
ThanksElliot,
Your post actually linked to an article which explained the terminal command. I posted moments after you posted, and your post was not displayed, nor did it have any influence on my post. I am a slow typist.
It appears to me as if one is an "off" command and one is an "on" command

Problems viewing PDF Thumbnails in the Preview App
I upgraded my Mac Air to the new OS X Yosemite version 10.10.3. When I open a multi page PDF, I can no longer view the thumbnails in the side pane. Instead I get this:
Can someone help me?
tGo to /Library/Internet Plugin-Ins
Move the PDF Browser plugin from the Internet Plug-Ins folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. -
Problem saving pdf from preview
Since upgrading to 10.4.3 I have noticed that preview behaves strangely when re-saving pdf files. If I preview a pdf document and the use the "save" function to make a copy, the copied file is about twice the size of the original, and the Table of Contents data seems to be lost. I've noticed this for files produced from the TeX package, such as are on the physics electronic archives (http://arxiv/org). Any explanation would be appreciated! I realise that I could just save a copy directly, but it is sometimes handy to preview first, and I am a little disturbed to discover that preview appears to be changing pdf files unnecessarily when saving them.
12" powerbook Mac OS X (10.4.3)I can't help you, but I'm having the same problem with version 9.4.1
I have been trying to "save as" some .pdf documents (monthly statements) from a financial institution, but it does not work when I right click on the file, or when I right click on the document. Like you, I click on the "disc" icon, and nothing happens. I was able to save these in August and prior, but not now. It makes no sense.
When I open these documents, they appear in a web window, not in the Reader software, so there is no tool bar showing "file", "edit", "view", etc, like what appearsw in Acrobat. I'm stumped. I posted this several days before you, but no replies yet. I'm not real eager to pay $39 for the adobe help desk just yet. -
Possible to view PDFs in Preview app as facing pages?
Is there a way to view a PDF with facing pages in the Preview app? Like if you had a book open?
(Other than slideshow?)
Regards,
KarenThanks,
Tried that, no luck. Are there any other settings I can try?
BTW, I can display the same PDF with facing page in DevonThink and Journler with no problems.

Kernel panic when viewing PDFs in Preview
Hello. I have recently been digitizing documents to my Macbook Pro. When I try to open the resulting PDFs, my Macbook has a kernel panic and restarts.
When I open the PDF, Preview has trouble displaying it properly. It looks corrupted. Zooming out seems to corrupt the image more, until the laptop hangs and restarts. I tried to open a PDF in a different app (Skim) and the same issue occurred.
Thanks for any help solving this.

com.apple.kec.pthread 1The panics are probably caused either by a bug in OS X or by a hardware fault, but you should rule out "VirtualBox" as a suspect by uninstalling it completely.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software. -
Acrobat X pro - Problem viewing PDF files in web browser
I've recently upgraded to the latest Imac and have experianced one or two teething problems with software compatibility with OS X 10.7.1 Lion (most now resolved)
My latest issue is viewing online PDF's which appear in my browser as just a blank black page. This happens in both Safari and Firefox (both latest versions)
My question is: Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?I was able install and view the files in adobe reader 10.1.1 and in web browser window 7 64 bit machine. But when I go to Edit-preferences-internet and unchecking "display PDF in Browser" , I am not able to view the pdf files in ie 9 browser. I have used this javscript to check for pdf version.
Immediately after installing adobe--
when I do adobe test in ie 9---https://courses.worldcampus.psu.edu/public/diagnostics/Acrobat.html-- launches a test pdf file--Acro_Test.pdf
After unchecking-- it stays in the https://courses.worldcampus.psu.edu/public/diagnostics/Acrobat.html instead of showing test pdf file--Acro_Test.pdf
Tried to go back to "display PDF in Browser"--it is showing it is checked(eventhough I did not check it)
and in ie
it stays in the https://courses.worldcampus.psu.edu/public/diagnostics/Acrobat.html instead of showing test pdf file--Acro_Test.pdf -
We multiple Xerox scanners and not all of them operate on the same version of software/firmware. 1 of our scanners uses PDF Version 1.4 (Acrobat 5.x) when scanning a doucment to our network and 1 of our scanners uses PDF Version 1.6 (Acrobat 7.x). When using Adobe Reader 9.x both documents open properly and are 100% visible. After upgrading to Adobe Reader X, the scans created using the newer version of PDF (1.6) have some missing text/images on the pages and have a grey "overlay" on the page. Again, Reader 9 will view both files properly, but Reader X will not. Any help is appreciated. I have fiddled around with several of the view settings to no avail. Thanks.
That is hardly a solution, the whole purpose of upgrading to Adobe Reader X is to avoid potential threats. There is obviously a problem with Adobe Reader X and veiwing certain documents that needs to be addressed and the way to address it should not reside with "Use Adobe 9 and Adobe 10 and pick whatever version works for your document"

Viewing PDF in preview, black rectangles around links
I've created a PDF in Microsoft Word 7.0, the PDF looks great in all applications except Preview on a mac. It would seem that all links in the PDF have a black rectangle around them, this only seems to be an issue in Preview, is this a known issue? As near as I can tell, no other applications seem to be interpreting these links as having boxes around them, this would lead me to believe that the problem does not lay with how the PDF was created.
Hi,
Can you try any other PDF file in Preview (not the one you created)

Problems viewing PDFs in Sky Drive on Safari
I have just tried to use Sky Drive on my new iMac. I first installed the Sky Drive app which worked once and has not worked again, all it keep's doing it trying to sync 8 folders. So I un-installed the Sky Drive app and went to use Sky Drive via the web. I am using Safari and running Mac OS 10.8.3. When I sign in to Sky Drive, I can view my photos fine but none of my documents/PDFs will open up. Example, when I go to click on a PDF all I get is a grey screen when it use to display the PDF document.
I went in to the settings of Safari and changed my 'Cookie' setting to allow all cookies and this in-turn looked to fix the problem, but as soon as I went back to the original setting, the problem returned.
This problem has only started within the last few days, before this, it worked fine both on the web and via the app. From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. Test. -
Printer Problem with PDF in Preview
After deinstalling virus barrier x5 of intgo with the deinstalling programme there are pdfs which are printed wrong from preview (Vorschau).
the letters look like Scelets and some of them have shaddows.(it is difficult to discribe, i should send some scans of printed documents). the font could be "Frutiger" but i am not sure. it is activated but pdf should deliver fonts with them , no?
yesterday it printed well, other pdfs are still printing well. is it a problem of preference items or a problem of fonts or what else?

Problem viewing PDF File in JSP
Hi,
I have the file location of a PDF saved in the database.
If I modify the PDF file on my directory and then try to view it in my browser, it still shows the old file .. (I do not modify the pdf file name)
However, when I close my browser and reopen it, it shows up okay. this looks like a browser level problem but can someone give me an idea on how I can solve this problem within my JSP...
Here is some code to view the file
<a href="<%= response.encodeURL(fileLocation) %>"><%= binderName + ".pdf" %></a>
Thanks,
YasirThe problem you are having is a browser cache issue. If you open the same URL, the browser is trying to save you time by giving you what it got last time. The trick is to make the URL different each time it is opened. Just append a hash or some other unique code:
Instead of:
http://myserver/pdfMakerServlet/newpdf.pdf
Use this:
http://myserver/pdfMakerServlet/newpdf.pdf&012345
If the URL is different each time, the browser will ask the server again for the file.
Does this help?
