Problems with audacity, audacious (ffmpeg libavformat.so)

Hi all,
I have this problem with audacious: it can't play mpc files (and maybe other formats) since it has an error with arch's current ffmpeg setup (everything is up-to-date here).
The error message it spits out is "ffaudio: Unsupported audio format 6"
I have an ffmpeg related problem with audacity too: when I try and open an mp4 file it says it can't, and if I look into edit -> preferences -> libraries -> ffmpeg import/export library, it says "ffmpeg library not found"; if I explicitly "select" /usr/lib/libavformat.so it doesn't recognize it as the lib it's looking for; same happens if I explicitly "select" /usr/lib/ffmpeg-compat/libavformat.so
Is there something I can do about this?
Thanks for any suggestion.

I solved the problem with audacity by manually linking ffmpeg-compat's libavaformat.so lib to it (audacity depends on ffmpeg-compat, not on ffmpeg, that's the one audacious depends on). I did it by editing ~/.audacity-data/audacity.cfg, "[FFmpeg]" section, changing it from...
Enabled=0
FFmpegLibPath=/usr/lib/libavformat.so
...to...
Enabled=1
FFmpegLibPath=/usr/lib/ffmpeg-compat/libavformat.so
Still looking for a solution to the problem with audacious.

  • [Solved] Problem with upgrading polkit or filesystem

    Ok so first off they do "upgrade" but the problem has me worried that something is wrong.
    A week or so ago after converting to systemd I tried getting rid of ConsoleKit and installing polkit 0.107 from the [testing] repo but it caused pacman to get stuck at "(1/1) upgrading polkit"  So I tried that a couple of times but I could never get pacman to finish and get past that.  I had to control + c to get out of that then type exit in the console (no text was visible that I typed however but typing exit + enter worked for closing it).  So I then opened a new terminal and downgraded polkit back to 0.105 and waited for polkit to get pushed from testing to see if it would fix my issue.  Fast forward to today and I go to upgrade my system.  Among the 83 updates or so was polkit and filesystem.  What do you know it gets stuck at "(15/83) upgrading polkit".  Fuck so I control + c, open new terminal and then do the upgrade again and it continues to update but this time it gets stuck doing the same thing for filesystem.  I control + c, open new terminal and continue the upgrade until it finishes, which it does this time, and I reboot.
    I tried re-installing polkit again and filesystem again but they continue to get stuck.  I cannot "complete" the upgrade even though they show the appropriate version when I check.

  • Problem with recording and sound on Pavilion ze1000 series

    I have an old Hp Pavilion ze 1250 running Windows XP (sp2) with 1gb  Ram.
    I'm trying to convert some cassette tapes to digital (with Audacity).
    My problem:  When I try to record using Audacity, it records about 10 seconds and then hangs.  When I click Stop and try to play the 10 seconds back, it freezes and won't play anything.  (After that, even if I import an mp3 file to work on, it won't play that either.)  It also causes all the sound to go off throughout the computer.  Songs will "play" in WMP but there's no sound in the speakers or headphones.  (The Microsoft logo music won't play either when I turn the computer off.)  I've tried resetting the volume and checking if anything is muted. Nothing .
    I restart the computer and everything is fine.....sound works and Audacity plays.....until I try to record again.
     I thought that this was only an Audacity problem....until I tried to record 60 seconds through Sound Recorder.  The exact thing happens.  It records about 10 seconds of audio, then freezes and refuses to playback.  All the sound goes off throughout the computer and nothing solves it except Restart.
    My sound/audio device is Conexant AC-Link Audio.
    The Sound Playback, Sound Recording, Voice Playback, and Voice Recording are all defaulted to HP VIA Audio.
    I have updated the audio driver.  Recording is enabled.  Is there something else I need to do?
    Thanks.

    Thank you for your reply.
    I'll try some of those suggestions and see if that helps.

  • A Problem With Recording: Delay Between Tra

    I recently purchased an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro to replace my ailing Audigy 2 Platinum from a few years back. I've been trying to do some home recording (namely with Sony's Acid Pro 5.0) and I've been noticing some delay between tracks when I record.
    For example, I will record one track, and then record a second track, playing along to exactally what I hear. When the second track mixes down, there is an offset between the two tracks on the order of two or three tenths of a second. This offset produces a noticible doubling effect, and requires me to go in and move the audio track around so that it plays properly.
    I've tried other programs (Audacity and n-Tracks Studio) so I figure it's not something wrong with the program. My computer is new, it's running an Athlon 64 3400+, with over a gig of ram, so I can't imagine it's a problem with my computer.
    Anybody have any thoughts or experience with problems like this?

    Latency issue.
    If you can select ASIO drivers (audio settings) on your software then use it and set latency on ASIO panel to ~ 5 ms.

  • DC Offset problem with Peak 4.14 on MacMini after new hard drive upgrade

    Tiger 10.4.11
    Bias Peak 4.14 (24-bit 44.1 AIFF files)
    USBPre 1.5
    The reason for this new topic is a problem that developed with Bias Peak 4.14 on my MacMini. Suddenly, when I apply the "Remove DC Offset" DSP process to a recording, the Bias Peak meters may stop displaying correctly.
    About 50% of the time, only one meter will respond to the sound, or neither will (the meters work fine on the raw file before I apply the DSP function). The rest of the time, they work normally after DC Offset. I'm still waiting to hear from Bias about this via their forum, but no-one has responded yet. I don't know if this is just a GUI bug or an indication of a recording problem. The really spooky thing is that the problem only shows up part of the time.
    This is happening on a new installation of OS X on a new drive that I installed. See a note at the bottom of this post for a hardware issue that may or may not play a role.
    I've been recording vinyl successfully for a long time now on my MacMini (24-bit 44.1 AIFF), using a USBPre external A/D converter and Bias Peak (currently v4.14). But recently Peak froze as it was saving a file. I had to do a hard shut down which led to a corrupted system. I'd been meaning to upgrade to a larger drive anyway, so I put a 120 gig drive in.
    After first installing/updating OS X on the new drive, and installing/upgrading Bias Peak, I had no problems. But then the control panel for the USBPre froze as I was getting ready to shut down. This worried me, so I ran diagnostics with TechTool and installed eDrive. The meter problem began showing up after this change. I wiped out the partition and reinstalled from scratch again, hoping that this would get things back to normal. But I still have the meter problem after applying DC Offset. Note, I created two partitions on the drive, and put Tiger on the first partition.
    The makers of the USBPRe (Sound Devices) say there is nothing about the USBPre or drivers that should be causing this.
    So I'm stuck, and faced with the following ideas for what might be wrong:
    1. Peak has a bug that I've somehow triggered. This may or may not be affecting the recording.
    2. Something about my recording hardware/driver has changed that is "corrupting" my recordings sometimes, and this is causing Peak to have trouble metering the sound.
    3. I screwed up my computer hardware and this is screwing up the recordings part of the time. See my upgrade note* about the hardware.
    4. The new drive seems to be a little slower to display folder contents. I wonder if this apparent latency could be causing the DC Offset problem in the original recorded file.
    * Upgrade note: When I tried to put the cover of the Mini back on after upgrading my drive and testing it out, I discovered that I hadn't screwed the drive/fan/DVD setup in correctly. The screws had fallen out and disappeared (my tiny screw driver made it very hard to tighten the screws I guess. I thought I’d done it correctly).
    I turned the Mini upside down a couple of times before I discovered the screws missing.. My first attempts to put the cover on with the Mini sitting upright were not successful, so I turned it upside down to take the cover back off. The screws probably fell out then. When I tried putting the cover top down on the table and lowering the Mini into the cover I discovered that the drive/fan/DVD assembly was loose!
    The drive is now secured completely except for the screws, and it is working. The slowness I mentioned above is something I noticed before the screws fell out, but obviously the assembly was not secured 100% even before I lost the screws.
    I apologize for this convoluted post and hope it is clear enough. Please help if you can, I'm under pressure to finish my recording project.
    Vinyl_Man

    Hello, DaddyPaycheck,
    The USBPre is powered by the USB bus, and it is plugged directly into the MacMini.
    The screws remain in hiding. I'm amazed that I didn't find them on the motherboard or something like that. If they don't turn up fairly soon, I'll try to get replacements from an Apple service center. And I'll make sure I have a better small screwdriver.
    I just did a test with Audacity for OS X and Cool Edit for Windows. I opened files that give me the meter problem in Peak and removed the DC Offset. When I opened the files I had modified in Audacity and Cool Edit, Peak metered the sound correctly. Somehow Peak is sensitive to something in the file that does not bother the other apps, and when the other apps have adjusted the DC Offset, Peak is happy. Peculiar.
    I'm thinking about recording with Audacity now instead of Peak. I'm still concerned that something is wrong, though, since I don't understand the problem.

  • Problem with stream from radio

    Sorry for my english, I wanted to posted on my local forum but it have problem with server and doesn`t work
    So on windows all channel this radio work good but on arch the main channel can`t running
    I suppose it`s depend of my iptables setting, I did all setting by this how to http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sim … wall_HOWTO
    from part " Setting up a single machine"
    This is adress radio channel with I have problem http://87.118.100.10:7000, in audacious I have only info "prebuffering" and nothing else
    vic can run this channel but stream is very dashed. It`s very strange because on windows all work good
    I tryed cut iptables in rc.conf in sector daemon and reboot but it was similar
    I sent this adress to my friend who use too arch and he had got the same problem
    Do you have idea why i have this problem
    Second time I`m sorry for my english but please help me

    Your english  is much better than my american, so maybe we can communicate somehow.
    I don't use iptables since I have a router handling that for me.
    Trying http://87.118.100.10:7000/ with xmms, vlc, amarok and mplayer resulted in not much.     VLC did give very choppy playback, while xmms got in a buffering/prebuffering loop.
    Using amarok  or mplayer to open http://87.118.100.10:7000/listen.pls resulted in good music.  Wish I could understand the lyrics but I could listen to it.
    Opening http://87.118.100.10:7000 in firefox leads to a Shoutcast Admin control panel where the link Listen results in a playlist file.
    It also tells me that they are stream aac sound, so, maybe the right plugin or a recompile after installing faad will make your chosen program work.
    Good luck and have fun

  • Two problems with MP3 files for interactive PDFs

    1. I'm putting in two interview excerpts for an interactive pdf. Last week when I tried to import the first MP3, I got the "cannot place this file. No filter found for requested operation" error message. I don't know anything about sound files, so I just tried To MP3 from the App store, which converted my MP3 file to another MP3 file, I guess. The new file worked fine.
    I got the second file today and had the same problem. I sent the following urls (http://indesignsecrets.com/forum/general-indesign-topics/how-to-place-an-mp3-file-into-ind esign-cs5-which-was-edited-with-audacity-and-converted-with-switch, http://indesignsecrets.com/forum/general-indesign-topics/no-filter-found-for-requested-ope ration-mp3) I found that seem to describe similar problems to our sound guy at work.He tried lowering the bit rate, but it didn't do any good. So when I got home, I tried To MP3, and it solved the problem again.
    Does anybody know why this is happening?
    2. Once I had the first sound file in place, I wanted to replace the small gray box that Acrobat puts in. Bob Levine suggested
    http://indesignsecrets.com/hiding-sound-files-in-an-interactive-pdf.php
    which worked great, but I needed some way to control the audio. I tried a variation of Steven Werner's suggestions in
    http://indesignsecrets.com/hiding-sound-files-in-an-interactive-pdf.php
    It was working fine, when I had just a play and pause button, but when I added a resume, the play button just stopped working. I tried all sorts of variations, getting rid of the double actions in the buttons, starting new files, new buttons, but the play button just didn't work. In my last test, the play button worked, but only after I had pressed resume. So I am completely stumped.
    Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.
    I'm using InDesign 7.0.4, Mac OSX 10.6.8
    Chris

    OK, I should have thought more  before I answered.
    So I see that Media Encounter does import audio files but it only exports video. However, I did a test with making a video file from the MP3, importing that video into InDesign, reducing the video, using the multi-function buttons, and everything worked fine. I got the warning message that the "interactive elements are clipped in ways that PDF files cannot reproduce" but it didn't interfere with playing it back. Still, I feel as if I'm cheating and something is going to come back and haunt me.
    The disadvantage is that the video files are larger than the audio.

  • Firewire audio problems with OS X 10.5.6

    Hello,
    I’m experiencing audio problems with Firewire 400 on my Macbook running Mac OSX 10.5.6.
    I’ve got a 2.4Ghz IntelCore 2 Duo with 4 GB RAM and 59 GB available on the internal HD.
    It’s hooked up to a brand new Mackie D.4 mixer with 2 Firewire outputs. The problems occur on both Firewire outputs.
    I’ve installed automatically from the software update (which I will never do again) to 10.5.6. I never tried the D.4 with 10.5.5 so I can’t tell if the problems occur there also.
    The main problem is that after a couple of minutes of recording the sound starts to break up and get really distorted. After a while the sound comes back again.
    The second problem is that Soundtrack Pro or Audacity don’t get any audio input from the D.4, although audio input is clearly visible in System Preferences – Sound.
    The only sound program that works with all 14 Firewire channels is Ableton, but also in Ableton the distortion occurs.
    An example of the distortion can be checked here:
    http://media.kaalslag.com/firewire-distortion-problem-mackieD4+Macbook.mp3
    I’ve roamed several forums and sites to solve the problem and I tried these solutions:
    I updated again to 10.5.6. with the full combo download from the Apple site. Restarted. Problem still there.
    I shut Airport off, because lots of sites mentioned problems with Airport conflicting with audio/firewire. Didn’t work.
    I did the work around with shutting the Macbook off, disconnecting the D.4, restarting the Macbook, opening Audio/Midi Setup, connecting the D.4 again, toggling the format frequencies a couple of times. Again, no use.
    Right now I’m using my “old” Macbook again to record from vinyl. This one is still running on OSX 10.4.11. No problems so far.
    I’ve had the distortion problems occuring before with an USB interface. Hoped that the Mackie Firewire would solve the problem, but it seems now that there’s a serious audio Firewire problem which is still not solved in OSX 10.5.
    Any help, tips and/or a work around would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    You could try using another computer in Target Disk mode (as an "external HD"), or you can connect the firewire cable and disconnect all other network cables (turning off airport). Then on each computer go to the "Network" system preferences and select "Built-in Firewire" from the list of ports and choose "Manually" from the drop-down menu next to "Configure". Enter the following IP addresses and subnet masks, apply the changes.
    _Computer 1_
    IP Address: 192.168.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    _Computer 2_
    IP Address: 192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    After those ip addresses are entered and you've clicked "Apply", ensure that for both computers you have file sharing enabled (done in the "Sharing" system preferences), and then check the Finder sidebar to see if the computers can see each other (their names should appear under "Shared" in the sidebar--if not, try restarting).
    If the computers dont appear (even after restarting), using the "Connect To" option that's available in the Finder's "Go" menu. In there, to connect to another computer enter it's IP address as follows:
    afp://IP_ADDRESS
    If you're on the computer with the ip address of 192.168.1.1, you would enter 192.168.1.2 as "IP_ADDRESS". The "afp" is the protocol (just like "http" for web), and stands for "Apple Filing Protocol"...Apple's file sharing protocol.

  • Encountering Problems with Basic Sound Tutorial

    Hello everyone,
    I am encountering problems with a basic sound tutorial. I am absolutely confused as to what the problem may be because the code is so simple, and is essentially copied from the textbook. I am convinced that I have done something very silly but cannot see it.
    I have attempted to run this in an appletviewer, Firefox and Internet Explorer. I have attempted to launch it from both a .class file and a .jar file. I have uninstalled and offline installed the JDK and JRE and successfully tested the new installations.
    The audio file I am attempting to load and play is an .AU (Sun/Next 8-bit u-law) audio file I created in Audacity. It is located in the same folder as the AudioApplet.class file.
    My sound system is defintely on, since I have listened to music all day. I have attempted running the program with Media Player closed.
    package edu.myuniversityid.sandbox;
    import java.applet.Applet;
    import java.applet.AudioClip;
    * @author Ibuki
    public class AudioApplet extends Applet
         * Initialization method that will be called after the applet is loaded
         * into the browser.
        public void init()
            super.init();
            AudioClip ac = this.getAudioClip(this.getDocumentBase(), "sample.au");
            ac.play();
    }The code compiles fine, however absolutely I get a small white window when it is run. No sound.
    Thankyou for your time.
    Regards,
    Ibuki.
    PS. I am sure this worked before the university forced me to update my version of Windows to SP2. Hence, the reason for reinstalling Java. Twice.
    Edited by: Ibuki on Jan 31, 2008 11:09 AM becasuse: Added a PS.

    I have attempted this alternative, without success:
        public void init()
            try
                super.init();
                URL url = new URL(this.getDocumentBase(), "sample.au");
                AudioClip ac = this.getAudioClip(url);
                ac.play();
            catch (MalformedURLException ex)
                Logger.getLogger(AudioApplet.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
        }The sample.au is definetly in the correct directory. Both File Explorer and NetBeans confirm this.
    Edited by: Ibuki on Jan 31, 2008 11:59 AM
    I have discovered a temporary solution that works in the applet viewer. The applet will load and plays the correct music perfectly. However, using this code it is not working when I try to deploy it using a web browser (MSIE and FF)!
    public void init()
            super.init();
            AudioClip ac = this.getAudioClip(this.getClass().getResource("sample.au"));
            ac.play();
    Edited by: Ibuki on Jan 31, 2008 12:12 PM
    Eureka!
    Having worked in the applet viewer I managed to get it working in the web browser by simply packaging my SoundApplet.class and sample.au into a .jar archive.
    <html>
         <body>
              <applet code="edu.myuniversityid.sandbox.AudioApplet.class" archive="dist/AudioApplet.jar">Unfortunately, this applet content cannot be displayed on this web page because your current browser does not support Java SE 6! Please <a href="http://www.java.com/">update your version of Java</a>.</applet>
         </body>
    </html>
    public void init()
            super.init();
            AudioClip ac = this.getAudioClip(this.getClass().getResource("sample.au"));

  • Problems with solving a JMF - JFFMpeg/gstreamer/fobs4java mpeg4 - stream

    hi!
    im doing a final at univerity, the aim is to enable JMF to play AND stream mp3, mpeg4, aac
    im already trying to get more than the basic JMS-stream (h.263) to work, for a couple of days of intensive work. only things i know now, is, that it is a lot more work than i expected first.. tryed it with gstreamer, JFFMpeg, FFMpeg-java, fobs4java, ... only things which worked been local player .. but the JMS in combination with upper named plugins lost even the ability to stream anything...
    am i doing something very wrong, does any one know about some solutions which work already? or did same i am doing now?
    im wondering if theres some one out there who has a bit more know how or may have a few hints or even some solutions
    would be very happy about some help

  • Problems with ALSA and OSS

    Hi.
    I'm a ArchLinux user and I have been having problems with my audio, specifficaly the microphone.
    My microphone works well with Audacity and I use it for speaking trough TeamSpeaker and since TeamSpeak still uses OSS I installed alsa-oss and added aoss to my TeamSpeak command. But, for some reason, the application stopped working (this have nothing to do with my real problem) and as substitute I installed TeamSpeak in Windows XP running on Virtualbox with ALSA audio. Everything worked smoothly until some weeks ago.
    The microphone on Virtualbox stopped working but I still hear sound. And the funny thing is that TS Linux got working again, but if I use it with aoss I cannot use the microphone but I hear sound and to have microphone I have to use it without aoss but then i dont have sound on other apps.
    And to get microphone on Virtualbox I have to enable OSS in preferences and use aoss but then, wich I don't understand why, I dont get any sound with other apps. :\
    I have no idea what triggered this problem.
    My audio device:
    00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
    ALC660-VD Analog

    No one? :\
    Not even why Virtualbox with OSS and aoss "steals" the sound to the other apps?

  • Problem with cdrdao reading .wav files

    Hi,
    I have being having problems with using cdrdao to read .wav files that I created from other sources (.flac, .ogg and .mp3) using flac123/ogg123/mpg123.
    Basically, this is the error
    [phil@discovery hack]$ cdrdao simulate --device /dev/cdrom1 toc
    Cdrdao version 1.2.3 - (C) Andreas Mueller <[email protected]>
    ERROR: ./01_achilles_last_stand.wav: not in PCM format.
    ERROR: Header of audio file "./01_achilles_last_stand.wav" is corrupted.
    The 'toc' file contains....
    [phil@discovery hack]$ cat toc
    CD_DA
    TRACK AUDIO
    COPY
    NO PRE_EMPHASIS
    TWO_CHANNEL_AUDIO
    FILE "./01_achilles_last_stand.wav" 0
    START 00:02:00
    Having used the 'cdrdao' program previously, I am pretty sure the 'toc' file is sane.
    I then noticed a difference between .wav files using the 'file' program:
    [phil@discovery hack]$ file *.wav
    01_achilles_last_stand.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, stereo 44100 Hz
    test.wav:                   RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 44100 Hz
    I found that the 'test.wav' file  worked when substituted as the FILE in the 'toc' file......
    With a bit of research I found a work around, namely to convert the .wav file to another .wav file using 'ffmpeg'.
    [phil@discovery hack]$ ffmpeg -loglevel quiet -i  01_achilles_last_stand.wav -f wav -ar 44100 -ac 2 test2.wav
    The resulting files...
    01_achilles_last_stand.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, stereo 44100 Hz
    test.wav:                   RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 44100 Hz
    test2.wav:                 RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 44100 Hz
    Changing the 'toc' file to pick up the two test* files worked fine.
    Does anybody know either a better fix or the reasons why this is happening?
    Regards
    Phil Q

    I am not sure I understood what you actually did or intended.
    Did you plug in the camera cards into a card reader and import with Lightroom, copy to destination on one portable HD?
    That should work.
    As soon as you unplug the portable HD, the storage location will be labeled as offline and all thumbnails have the "?". As soon as you replug the portable HD and ensure that it has the same drive letter as before, the "?" will vanish.
    The "?" indicates that the file is not accessible at the storage location which you told LR during import.
    It has nothing to do with being able to save.
    Note: only in importing with "copy" chosen will LR actually touch a file (and copy it to the indicated storage location). Inside LR there are only records pointing to the image files and holding all sorts of descriptions, like metadata and develop instructions.
    If you use NX2 for the task to copy images from camera card to portable HD, and import them afterwards to LR (add in import settings), that makes no difference.
    LR will show the "?" whenever the portable HD is unavailable or the path invalid because with a different drive letter.

  • Skype says i have a problem with my microphone

    Hi,
    So i bought my first laptop computer and it came with windows 8. At first i said oh w8 looks really neat but after less than a minute i was already hating it. The fact that i cant turn off all this redesigned UI's is really annoying. So i tried to use skype, when i call or receive a call and i answer it, the call gets terminated immediately and skype that " there has been a problem with my microphone ". That is, my mic that is built in the pc.
    If i use mumble teamspeak or even audacity, i can record and use the mic without problems, so its not a hardware problem, its just this crappy software. In my audio settings i have " Microphone (Realtek HD Audio)" selected.
    As if this vomiting minimalistic design wasnt enough, i have to deal with configuration problems that programs that are 5 mb (audacity ) dont have.
    Terrific job.

    Owkey i had the same problem with my computer but i will explain now to you step for step how to solve this and its pretty easy.
    NOTE: this is for the winsdows 8 version not desktop. Yust saying.
    Step 1: Launch Skype in the winsdows 8.
    Step 2: press the flag buttom on you keyboard with the C combined.
    Step 3: Click on settings.
    Step 4: Click on permissions.
    You will see a smal bar that will allouw you to activate is de-activate anny hardware tools from skype.
    Step 5: Make sure webcame and microphone on ON.
    Step 6: Call friends and have a good time
    Hope you can use this to enjoy your Skype experience.
    Yours sincerely,
    Chris Nubcake

  • Problems with ambient noise in video

    Hi,
    I've been having problems with this weird noise. See, I went to an event a few weeks ago and I took one clip of an actor and recorded it on my Panasonic DMC-TZ5 camera and transferred the footage to iMovie. It seemed fine to me but when it reaches 2 minutes there's this noise that blocks out the actor talking and then seems to fade more into the background at over 3 minutes and you can hear him again for the rest of the video. Is there any way I can eliminate this noise problem and if so, what application should I use? I tried to "normalize clip volume" when opening up iMovie but that didn't really do anything. I've heard of Soundbooth and other audio aps but I have never used them before so I have no clue where to start.
    I have uploaded the video on YouTube:
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7f5ewdeGwVo&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7f5ewdeGwVo&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
    ...And nothing is more irritating to receive comments from others who complain that the sound is horrible. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

    You shouldn't have used 'Normalize' with video like this, which has a very low speech volume (..the mic seems to have been pointed towards the audience, not the actor).
    'Normalize' brings everything up to a constant, "solid" volume level. So if a voice is quiet, all the background hiss is brought up to a higher volume along with the quiet voice itself. Where a speaker pauses, and the voice is absent, the background hiss and noise may become even LOUDER to bring everything up to a standard high volume level!
    So if it's not too late - but I suspect it is! - you should really Undo the 'Normalize' setting ..but once things are Saved it's probably impossible to Undo that.
    The noise which starts at 2mins and runs to 3mins may be some artifact produced by the software which did the Normalization ..I don't know for sure. It's a weird "artificial" sound, rather similar to repeated "out-of-phase" abnormalities, and has many characteristics of having been created by sound-manipulation software.
    Because that extra noise is not completely solid, regular and constant (..like a solid constant hum, or a constant buzz..) it would be very difficult to remove it ..and removing it would remove virtually all of the actor's voice, because the weird noise is so much louder than the actor's voice.
    Programs like 'SoundSoap' (..click on that blue link for info..) promise to "remove noise" ..but they can only remove regular, constant, single-frequency noise well.
    Even 'SoundSoap Pro' wouldn't be able to remove that noise and leave the actor's voice behind, as so many of the frequencies (..highs and lows..) of that noise coincide with his, and others', speech frequencies.
    So you'd end up - if you did try removing the noise - with an extremely faint and "thin" sounding voice, which came and went, pretty much disappearing into some background hiss, and it would sound as if it were heard coming out of a water pipe.
    If you can go back to your original camcorder recording (..before 'Normalization'..) I suggest chopping out that one minute which has the "noisy" material (..if it really was there on the original). Then use the free 'Audacity' program..
    (..click on that pic, above, for a larger, clearer image..)
    ..to remove the background hiss and to boost mid-range sounds, then the actor's voice would come out much clearer, and you could also increase the overall volume, too - but without 'Normalizing' it until you'd first removed as much background hiss as possible, and had boosted his mid-range voice to greater prominence.

  • Screen capture : problems with audio quality & volume

    Hi all ,
    I'm quite new with Arch (I installed it 1 week ago) but I'm a quite veteran debian user (since 10 years)...
    I'd like to produce screencast for my students , so I 've made some tests with xvidcap & recordmydesktop, they were fine
    I 've decided to add sound to these first demos and that 's here that difficulties come...
    My laptop is a Sony VAIO VPC Z1 (quad core i7 , 8Gb of RAM , 500 gb harddisk, with an hybrid graphics card i915/Nvidia M 330)
    Soundcard is well detected :
    \ └─(\ 1:\ 10:03\ :%)─\ ─\  lspci|grep -i audio                                                            ──\ (lun.,nov.29)─┘
    00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)
    01:00.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)
    they are seen in the cards file:
    \ └─(\ \ 10:10\ :%)─\ ─\  cat /proc/asound/cards                                                           ──\ (lun.,nov.29)─┘
    0 [Intel          ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
                          HDA Intel at 0xd7820000 irq 45
    1 [NVidia         ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
                          HDA NVidia at 0xd1000000 irq 16
    My problems are :
    - it seems that my alsamixer are lost each time (preferences for each channel)
    - I don't know what channel to use while recording because I've got :
    record
    record1
    record2
    digital
    micro
    micro boost
    ouch...
    I 've tried to make some sound  capture with a Plantronics (earphones + micro ) using my front connectors (2 jack )
    Results are very confusing:
    - with audacity , sound is quite good
    - with recordmydesktop, noise leveel is very high, I can't figure out how to filter the signal
    - with xvidcap ,the man page is not very informative for options to capture sound
    So your feedbacks are welcome...
    It's my first attempt to do multimedia with Linux (I use it for programming Java/C++ and for documents editing in LateX)
    Thanks
    jerome

    It does appear to be a bit tricky to get the Mac to always recognize this key combination. Especially if Space has another function related to that window, such as Quick View over a Finder window. I could not get consistent results when using the key combo, sometimes it worked first time, many times nothing.
    But there is another way to get screen shots. There is the Apple Utility Grab in the Utilities folder (Apps/Utilities). It will help you with all the screen shots the key combos take.
