Problems with debugging in Oracle sql developer

Dear all,
I have a stored procedure with about 3500 lines of code. The SP is calling some other SP's , so altogether around 30,000 lines of code is to executed.
I have some delete statements in the beginning of my SP.
Till nw i was able to debug and run this SP.
But nw I am facing a strange problem.
I can run the SP.
But if i try to debug it , it gets hanged after the delete statement and does not move forward.
So i moved all that statements to another SP and I call the new SP from my present one.
In this way If i debug , after calling the newly created SP , my main Sp does not recognise the break points , and it just finishes execution ..
Can any one help me on this.
Thanks in Advance,
Kurian Simon

Simon,
Did you move the breakpoint, and once you'd moved the lines of code, did you recompile, using compile for debug? Also, it's important to do compile for debug on all the program units you want to debug, otherwise SQL Developer will just step over the units not compiled for debug.

  • Debugging in Oracle SQL Developer

    I would like to know how to debug my PL / SQL programs in the Oracle SQL Developer program using breakpoints and such. I've never known how to use debugging tools like this and since this program provides this kind of feature, I was wondering if anyone on here might be able to shine some light on this for me. How are these used? How could I use them to say, figure out what the value of a given variable might be on line whatever? Etc.
    One reason I'm setting out to learn this is because I'm tired of typing DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE all the time. I would think that there must be a better way than this.
    Lastly (and while we're on that subject), what would cause SQL Developer to not output a DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE line? I've given this a string of text to output to the monitor and it's not working. It's in the DECLARE section (thinking I could place these almost anywhere my tiny little heart desired, but apparently, I'm wrong?)
    Again, any insight is appreciated.

    Oh, I get it... We had another pesky drop-out fishing for homework cheats again, right?
    Here's a suggestion to make this forum (you know, a place where people come together who all think differently about things both deep and shallow) somewhat more accepting and useful a place for idiots like me who might happen to overlook an apparently obvious "Help" menu item with the glowing neon-colored label heading of "Table of Contents": instead of wasting your own time (let alone, others) by posting silly responses that serve arbitrary agendas for the sake of inflating one's ego and online rep points due to having a bad high school experience, why not just instead take a high road (all the real Oracle kings around here hopefully take) and either ignore the response altogether or post something at least 1% useful. Sound like a plan? Great! For instance, why not inquire about why someone posted something that might not make sense to you? It's an amazing concept...
    Because after all...
    "+I'm often perplexed about the "answers" we get. Seems like you never posted your suggestions.+"
    ...doesn't do a lot for people who come across this thread in similar straights or perspective I was in at the time of creating it.
    That said, something like...
    "+Since you're using Oracle SQL Developer, you should have a 'Help' menu item near the top of the window. Click on it and then click on 'Table of Contents'. Proceed to do as Jim suggested by locating the topic 'Running and Debugging Functions and Procedures'. In that section of the contents, you will find more information about debugging your program, tips and tricks, etc. If this doesn't help you or if you're unsure about something in general, feel free to post back and we'll try to help you further.+"
    ...is much more helpful and succinct. It's welcoming, objective, and very informative (not that Jim's response wasn't).
    On that note, Jim, I do appreciate your response. When I first read your suggestion, I had misinterpreted what you proposed in the heat of the moment. Above all else, I also had some things going on around me that were distracting me. Thanks again. I'm reading the topic right now...

  • Problem in connection to Oracle SQL Developer

    Hi All,
    I am trying to connect to remote machine database through Oracle SQL Developer, it is giving me teh following error.
    Status: Faliure -Test failed :io connection :The Network Adapter could not establish the connection .
    I had given the hostname as the name which is assigned to that server, it didnt work.
    Later i tried with the IP address of the Server, it worked.
    Can anybody tell me how can i connect by giving hostname instead of the IP address.
    Thanks in advance,
    Vinay

    Hi Vinay,
    One way would be to add an entry in your hosts file. On windoze you can find this in
    %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc

  • Oracle SQL Developer for OSX not able to compile/execute/handle packages?

    Hi,
    Have been stuck with this for quite some mins now,
    When I execute this simple -valid- create package statement in Oracle SQL Developer:
    http://www.pastebin.ca/757859
    It shows it's not compiled and has errors, when I check the Packages part in Oracle SQL Developer I see this:
    http://www.pastebin.ca/757860
    The ; after end has been removed by the application. In fact this means I can't do anything with packages in Oracle SQL Developer for OSX?
    Is this a known bug?
    Or am I doing something wrong?
    Any resolving response to this matter would be really appreciated.

    Yeah, that bug is in there since stoneage, and is really a no-brainer to fix. Until they don't, we'd be losing time recompiling.
    FWIW, everything works fine using the procedure editor for creating, editing and compiling.

  • Pl/SQL Error ORA-00904 not showing in Oracle SQL Developer

    Hi,
    I am new to Oracle and the various development tools available.
    Whilst using Oracle SQL Developer we have come across a scenario where a PL/SQL package does not compile, but only shows warnings in the compiler log.
    The same packeage when compiled using PL/SQL Navigator shows a much more detailed list of errors, and highlights the real problem.
    Why does Oracle SQL Developer not show the following error?
    PL/SQL: ORA-00904: "SERIAL_LINE_ID": invalid identifier
    Regards
    Adrian

    There are various settings you can give to messages. (eg, informational, warning, severe).
    Tools-PL/SQL compiler options.
    Normally, just the first 20 messages are displayed.
    Either change code to get rid of warning messages, or change settings to ignore informational and warning messages.
    P.S. There is a dedicated sqldeveloper forum where your question should really have been posted.

    I have already downloaded Java 1.6 but don't know whether I need to uninstall Java 1.7 first. If don't need to uninstall Java 1.7, how can I set Oracle SQL Developer to run with Java 1.6?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
    One prior post discussing the use of Java 7 is:
    SQL Developer 3.0  and Java SE 7?
    There is no need to uninstall any Java version (except if you have disk space constraints) and no problem switching between Java versions. This may be controlled in the sqldeveloper.conf file in your ...\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin directory via the SetJavaHome line. For example:
    #SetJavaHome ../../jdk
    SetJavaHome C:/Program Files/Java/jdk1.6.0_26
    #SetJavaHome C:/Program Files/Java/jdk1.7.0Regards,

  • Problems using SQL*Loader with Oracle SQL Developer

    I have been using TOAD and able to import large (milllions of rows of data) in various file formats into a table in an Oracle database. My company recently decided not to renew any more TOAD licenses and go with Oracle SQL Developer. The Oracle database is on a corporate server and I access the database via Oracle client locally on my machine. Oracle SQL Developer and TOAD are local on my desktop and connected through TNSnames using the Windows XP platform. I have no issues with using SQL*Loader via the import wizard in TOAD to import the data in these large files into an Oracle table and producing a log file. Loading the same files via SQL*Loader in SQL Developer, freezes up my machine and I cannot get it to produce a log file. Please help!

    I am using SQL Developer version 3.0.04. Yes, I have tried it with a smaller file with no success. What is odd is that the log file is not even created. What is created is a .bat file a control file and a .sh file but no log file. The steps that I take:
    1.Right click on the table I want to import to or go to actions
    2. Import Data
    3. Find file to import
    4. Data Preview - All fields entered according to file
    5. Import Method - SQL Loader utility
    6. Column Definitions - Mapped
    7. Options - Directory of files set
    8. Finish
    With the above steps I was not able to import 255 rows of data. No log file was produced so I don't know why it is failing.
    thanks.

  • Oracle SQL Developer 3.0: PL/SQL debugging of anonymous blocks: ISSUES

    Hello,
    I just downloaded the Oracle SQL Developer 3.0. I have been using the EA releases as they came into existence and was happy to see the released version. So I immediately tried to debug an anonymous block (something I did not try to do in the EA releases), and nothing happened.
    The "Debug" was grayed out and the key-chord "ctrl-shift-F10" did nothing. I found this forum:
    Re: 30EA1: anonymous block debugging?
    and followed Vadim Tropashko's advice. This did nothing for my anon. block but worked fine for the simple example.
    So I started to whittle my anon. block down to find the culprit, here is a repeatable breaking point for me:
    declare
        stmt1 long;
        stmt2 long;
        stmt3 long;
        stmt4 long;
        p_data varchar2( 500 );
        i      varchar2( 10 );
    BEGIN
        STMT1 := 1;
        STMT2 := 1;
        STMT3 := 1;
        STMT4 := 1;
        --the moment this is in the block "Debug" is no longer an option
         select
            SendDocumentResult
           into
            p_data
           from
            XMLTABLE( '/data'
                    PASSING
                    xmltype.createxml( '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><data><SendDocumentResult>test</SendDocumentResult></data>' )
                    COLUMNS SendDocumentResult varchar2( 1000 ) PATH 'SendDocumentResult' ) ;
    end;The moment I have the SELECT INTO ... XMLTABLE() it fails (a normal SELECT INTO works just fine).
    Is this a problem with my environment or is a problem with SQL Developer 3.0.04. Looking over K's comments, it seems the debug worked for 'simple' blocks, so I wonder if this is just out-of-scope...
    My environment:
    Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production
    PL/SQL Release 11.2.0.1.0 - Production

    NLSRTL Version 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
    and Oracle SQL Developer
    3.0.04 (Buld Main 04.34 with bundled Java) on a Window's XP box.

  • BUG in Oracle SQL Developer 3.0.04 on the "generating DLL" with comments?

    I'm newbie on oracle, but I think that I found out a bug in Oracle SQL Developer version 3.0.04 on the "generating DLL" tool using "comments".
    I will describe the steps that I gave:
    I created a view, but after I test it I had to change my “where” condition, so I comment the old code and then I wrote the new “where” condition below. After I done that I tried to look at the sql code of my view using “generating DLL” tool, but oracle sql developer only shown me half of the code, a lot of code were missing. Then I began with some test trying to understand what happen and I notice that if I put an invalid sql code in my comment the generating DLL start working with no problems, for example(pseudo-code):
    (COMMENT WITH VALID SQL CODE the "Generating SQL" don't work:)
    CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW <user>.<view_name> ( <column1>,<column2> )
    AS
    SELECT column1, column2
    FROM table1
    INNER JOIN
    (SELECT
    FROM table2
    INNER JOIN .....
    INNER JOIN ....
    --where time_stamp = (select max(time_stamp) from .....)
    WHERE time_stamp >= TRUNC(sysdate)
    ) t1 ON t1.ID = ....
    AND ..... >= TRUNC(sysdate)
    ORDER BY ....
    Generating DLL returns this(when the error occurs):
    CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW <user>.<view_name> ( <column1>,<column2> )
    AS
    (COMMENT WITH VALID SQL CODE the "Generating SQL" work with no problems:)
    CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW <user>.<view_name> ( <column1>,<column2> )
    AS
    SELECT column1, column2
    FROM table1
    INNER JOIN
    (SELECT
    FROM table2
    INNER JOIN .....
    INNER JOIN ....
    --where
    WHERE time_stamp >= TRUNC(sysdate)
    ) t1 ON t1.ID = ....
    AND ..... >= TRUNC(sysdate)
    ORDER BY ....
    I believe that "Generating DLL" tool have some problem with the comments, I also used /*...*/ to comment but the problem is still active.
    I notice as well that if I started to add some more comments along the code, the conditions migth change, so I think the problem is related with "comments" code.
    Would you mind telling me if this is a real bug or if I'm doing anything wrong.
    Thank you in advance,
    Rodrigo Campos
    Edited by: 894886 on 3/Nov/2011 5:29

    Hi Rodrigo,
    Thank you for reporting this. The only bug I see currently logged on a comment affecting the generated View DDL involves ending the last line of the definition with a comment, which treats the ending semi-colon (even if on a different line) as part of the comment. That is actually related to a low-priority bug against an Oracle database API.
    Unfortunately, your pseudo-code is a bit complex. Trying a few quick, simpler tests against the standard HR schema did not reproduce the issue. I tried INNER JOIN, and nested SELECTs. It would help greatly if you could provide a test case compilable against one of the standard schema, like HR or SCOTT.

    because the message when i test connection always is filed and I'm sure i typing username and password and SID:orcl as i set when install database.port 1158 is what the dbcontrol (Oracle Enterprise Manager) is listening on. OEM is NOT the database. As far as the database is concerned, OEM is "just another client".
    Actually, the database doesn't listen for requests on any port. There is another process, the "listener" that listens for requests to connect to the database. Typically, it listens on port 1521. You should have a tnsnames.ora file set up to resolve a connection request to the correct host. You can read more on this at http://edstevensdba.wordpress.com/2011/02/09/sqlnet_overview/
