Problems with enums
Hi, I am trying to build a card class where each card has a suit, rank and prime number. I am trying to do it with enums, but I am having problems initialising the class from my Deck. The Card class is like so:
import java.util.Comparator;
public class Card
private final Rank rank;
private final Suit suit;
private final PrimeVal primeVal;
public enum Rank
Deuce(0),Three(1),Four(2),Five(3),Six(4),Seven(5), Eight(6),
Nine(7), Ten(8), Jack(9), Queen(10), King(11), Ace(12);
private final Integer rankValue;
Rank(int rankValue)
this.rankValue = rankValue;
public Integer faceValue(){ return rankValue; };
public enum PrimeVal
Deuce(2),Three(3),Four(5),Five(7),Six(11),Seven(13), Eight(17),
Nine(19), Ten(23), Jack(29), Queen(31), King(37), Ace(41);
private final Integer primeVal;
PrimeVal (int primeVal)
this.primeVal = primeVal;
public Integer primeVal(){ return primeVal; };
public enum Suit
Spades(0x1000), Hearts (0x2000), Diamonds(0x4000), Clubs(0x8000);
private final Integer suitValue;
Suit(int suitValue)
this.suitValue = suitValue;
public Integer suitValue(){ return suitValue; };
public Card(Rank rank, Suit suit, PrimeVal primeVal)
this.rank = rank;
this.suit = suit;
this.primeVal = primeVal;
public Rank rank() { return rank; }
public Suit suit() { return suit; }
public String toString() { return rank + " of " + suit; }
}and my initialisation procedure in Deck is:
static
for (Card.Suit suit : Card.Suit.values())
for (Card.Rank rank : Card.Rank.values() )
Deck.add(new Card(rank, suit));
}This code is predominantly from a enum tutorial off of this site, my problem is, I am just learning, I don't know to keep the features and add in the prime number and get it to initialise correctly... which is why the constructor is wrong. Is this even a good way of doing it?
Many thanks, Ron
Kaj, thanks, i know I need a constructor, I just
don't know how to add it in! That was the question,
how to add it?
Thanks, RonAre you kidding me?
Here's your original code, trying to invoke the constructor:
Deck.add(new Card(rank, suit)); You're passing 2 arguments to the Card constructor, but you need 3.
Think.

IDL to JAVA - problem with enum, const assignment
Hi,
I have a problem with compile IDL to JAVA.
I want to compile foo.idl to java by command:
idlj foo.idl foo.idl:
enum color {
blue,
red,
green,
yelow
const color DEFAULT_COLOR = blue;But I get errors:
foo.idl (line 8): The type of is enumeration, but it should be primitive or string.
const color DEFAULT_COLOR = blue;
foo.idl (line 8): Identifiers in constant expressions must be constants, not blue.
const color DEFAULT_COLOR = blue;I don't think that IDL file (foo.idl) is wrong, because I compile this file to c and python without errors.
Can you help me?Let's take this one step at a time.

Hi,
I have defined enum has follows-
public enum DataType
CHAR( 1, "char"),
INT ( 2, "integer"),
FLOAT( 3, "float");
private int precedence;
private String name;
DataType( int precedence, String name)
this.precedence = precedence;
this.name = name;
public int getPrecedence( )
return precedence;
public String getName( )
return name;
}this works fine, but now I have to add Date also with date format, so I tried this-
public enum DataType
CHAR( 1, "char", null),
INT ( 2, "integer", null),
FLOAT( 3, "float", null),
DATE( 4, "date", "yyyy/mm/dd");
private int precedence;
private String name;
private String format;
DataType( int precedence, String name, String format)
this.precedence = precedence;
this.name = name;
this.format = format;
public int getPrecedence( )
return precedence;
public String getName( )
return name;
public void setFormat( String format)
this.format = format;
public String getFormat( )
return format;
}now, when I try to have two date types -
DataType d1 = DataType.DATE;
d1.setFormat( "yy/mm/dd");
DataType d2 = DataType.DATE;
d2.setFormat( "mm/yy/yy");then d2's format is overwriting d1's format.
Can anyone suggest a better way to achieve this ?
Thanks,

2) When i remove the sendMessage method and i put only a System.out.println(somethingToPrint); it works but only once. After i hit second time my send button nothing happens. Somewhere i read that works only once is that true or i misunderstood? And if yes how i can do it every time i press the send button?

I have this problem with my JSP page. I am using a javascript function
which calls a function within a bean. The problem that I have is that I get an error when trying to call the following function :
function refDataTypes_onchange()
Vector empNames = DBQuery.getResult();
I get a runtime error at the line Vector empNames = DBQuery.getResult;
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Below is the whole code:

What's the deal with enums?
Hello,
I'm trying to familiarise myself with the new Java features that project Tiger (Java 1.5) will introduce. I come from a C++ programming background. I very briefly studied enums whilst I learned C++ and never used them in my programs, so I was, quite frankly, relieved when I learned that Java didn't support them.
But now it does.
I'm wondering, from a software design and engineering perspective, what benefit enums will add to the Java language and software engineering in general. I have read some pleas and arguments for enums. As I understand those arguments, proponents feel that minor ledgibility improvements to switch statements (which some OO programmers don't use on the basis that it weakens the object-orientedness through its goto-esque break statements) necessitate the addition of a whole other structure.
Out of curiosity, wouldn't it be more advantageous for Sun to put their efforts into supporting constant strings in switches in addition to primitive data types if people are so concerned with clarity?
I fail to understand what enums will do that constant string arrays or constant values cannot. I would like to think that Sun wouldn't add C++ features unless if there was a reason to do so, so I believe that there are good reasons to introduce this feature.
Please help clarify this confusion.
Thank you!Comments on the previous posting inline. Note: I'll go off on a few tangents, but try to always return to the issue of enums. The fact that I go off on tangents (related initially to an enum type example) should show that enums help eliminate numerous problems.
Fair enough, but wouldn't this accomplish the same thing in
a slightly wordier wayPretty much. But you still have the validation code in there yourself:
currentDirection = ( direction > 0 && direction < 5 ? direction : 0 );People can still accidentally enter an invalid value, and it won't get caught by the compiler. So, I could call set(Compass.WEST) and hope/expect that is equivalent to set(Direction.LEFT). This will only occur if both Compass.WEST and Direction.LEFT are the same int value. If they are not, then we are in trouble. Worse, still if Compass.WEST and Direction.RIGHT are the same value, the code will compile, and run without any illegal value flagging, but our traveller will go off in the wrong direction.
Error handling tangent: Given the implementation, the error handling is not performed in set, rather the illegal value is captured as a zero, which must be dealt with at a later time - say in a switch statement that calls get. This is not a good idea - it increases the "distance" between the error occuring (bad call to set) and the error being detected (if xInt != 0). The larger the distance, the harder debugging is. If you throw an exception in set the bug is immediately flagged. With enums, none of this should be necessary.
Implementation tangent: set, get and currentDirection are static. This is not a good idea - it only allows one direction. If you have multiple travellers, each would have a Direction object, but (sticking with constants) UP, etc. would still be static.
I keep the switch statement in my enum workaround, but I believe that
the second reply suggested that enum could altogether eliminate the
use for switch statements. How exactly would it do that?enum in its simplest form would not remove switch. However, using an extension of the type-safe enum idiom (i.e. the current Java approach to enums), you can embed direction specific logic in each of the "enum" members. If I understand the enum-spec correcly, this will also be possible with the Java 1.5 enum language facility.
So, for an example, sticking with the domain: Consider a class Location, with x and y elements, and a Direction. The non-OO, non-enum approach would be as follows:
class Location {
int x,y;
void move (final int direction) {
switch (direction) {
case UP:
--y;
break;
case DOWN:
++y;
break;
case LEFT;
--x;
break;
case RIGHT:
++x;
break;
default;
throw new RuntimeException("Invalid direction " + direction);
class Direction {
public static final int UP = 1;
public static final int DOWN = 2;
public static final int LEFT = 3;
public static final int RIGHT = 4;
}Note that I've deliberately been loose with my visibility. All logic is in Location, and Direction is dumb. If we go with a type safe-enum idiom, we get:
class Location {
int x,y;
void move (final Direction direction) {
if (direction == Direction.UP) {
--y;
} else if (direction == Direction.DOWN) {
++y;
} else if (direction == Direction.LEFT) {
--x;
} else if (direction == Direction.RIGHT) {
++x;
} else { // direction is null
throw new NullPointerException("null direction");
class Direction {
public static final Direction UP = new Direction();
public static final Direction DOWN = new Direction();
public static final Direction LEFT = new Direction();
public static final Direction RIGHT = new Direction();
private Direction () {} // the ctor is private to limit instances
}This code is a rewrite of the int approach, but is "type-safe". We've moved from switch to if as we can't switch on object references. Note: there is still error handling code, as you're not "null-safe" (I don't know what the Java 1.5 spec says about this)
Little else has changed - the responsibilities are still the same. We can address this by going OO, which removes the if (formerly a switch) statement, but does couple the classes.
class Location {
int x,y;
void move (final Direction direction) {
direction.move(this);
class Direction {
private final int xOffset, yOffset;
private Direction (final int xOffset, final int yOffset) {
this.xOffset = xOffset;
this.yOffset = yOffset;
public static final Direction UP = new Direction(0,1);
public static final Direction DOWN = new Direction(0,-1);
public static final Direction LEFT = new Direction(-1,0);
public static final Direction RIGHT = new Direction(1,0);
void move(final Location location) {
location.x += xOffset;
location.y += yOffset;
}This removes any conditional logic, embedding (constructor parameterised) logic within Direction. It also eliminates the "null-safe" check, as direction.move(this) will throw an NPE if a null is passed.
Also, I've read some things saying that enum reduces 'boilerplate'
code. What exactly does that and 'boilerplate' mean?The Direction class is an example of the type-safe enum approach currently used in Java. It has been enhanced with logic for movement. Even if I dropped this logic, there is still functionality worth adding to the Direction class - a toString method that returns one of "UP", "DOWN", etc (shown next); a way to serialize the object and retain reference equality - you have to write a readResolve method (not shown).
class Direction {
private final String name;
private Direction (final String name) {
this.name = name;
public static final Direction UP = new Direction("UP");
public static final Direction DOWN = new Direction("DOWN");
public static final Direction LEFT = new Direction("LEFT");
public static final Direction RIGHT = new Direction("RIGHT");
public String toString() {
return name;
}Once you've written this code for one type-safe enum, you've written them for them all. You copy-cut-paste, and rename the class/elements. All this code is predictable. It is "boiler plate". Now, if you gave me a compiler that generated all this code for me, when I present it with
enum Direction {UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT}; then I've got something that reduces my boiler plate code to zip.... Enter the Java 1.5 compiler. -
Problem with focus border and ListCellRenderer in custom listbox
I have a bug in some code that I adapted from another posting on this board -- basically what I've done is I have a class that implements a custom "key/value" mapping listbox in which each list item/cell is actually a JPanel consisting of 3 JLabels: the first label is the "key", the second is a fixed "==>" mapping string, and the 3rd is the value to which "key" is mapped.
The code works fine as long as the list cell doesn't have the focus. When it does, it draws a border rectangle to indicate focus, but if the listbox needs to scroll horizontally to display all the text, part of the text gets cut off (i.e. "sometex..." where "sometext" should be displayed).
The ListCellRenderer creates a Gridlayout to lay out the 3 labels in the cell's JPanel.
What can I do to remedy this situation? I'm not sure what I'd need to do in terms of setting the size of the panel so that all the text gets displayed OK within the listbox. Or if there's something else I can do to fix this. The code and a main() to run the code are provided below. To reproduce the problem, click the Add Left and Add Right buttons to add a "mapping" -- when it doesn't have focus, everything displays fine, but when you give it focus, note the text on the right label gets cut off.

==================
Boy, you are not kidding, I was running both the cloud and CS6, and I was ready to throw in the towel.
I have changed computer's twice now, have a solid state hd, (which I love) with 10 terabytes on externals, I run NOTHING except adobe's stuff on my HD now, and only one version of it, and it runs like a dream.
So, I updated the OS to win 8.1, updated my peripherals,
I dumped CS6 (hated to, but for some reason my 3D won't work on it, it works fine with the cloud) but in CS6 the software was turning it off after adobe's last update.
I've made a virtual machine for my development environments which do not play well with adobe's stuff.
My rule of thumb has always been double what the manufacturer states is required for RAM, but imho, with my current upgrades: upgraded to win8.1, and other peripherals, spent two weeks changing stuff over and it's about 100 times better than trying to run CC and CS6. - No kidding, the change is astronomical
But for anything PC I'm way over powered, and for Adobe, I'm still underpowered.
Next, I'll just get a mac for Adobe, and stick with my pc's for ms/CentOS. Too, it seems like since the cloud was initiated Adobe is rolling out the updates faster and changes without warning. The processor/3D issue, I had no warning on it, just woke up one day and "no more 3d" :S
But I do love the cloud, so, guess there's got to be some dark lining to it. <g> -
Problems with Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client 3.1

Could anyone help me please?

UntrustedNetworkPThere seem to be much more problems with 3.1.04049
Especially with certificate authentication.
I opened some TAC cases.
Try 3.1.04063 that came out at 07-24-13.
TAC said that there are some fixes in it... -
When trying to generate C-Code of the sample programs with the Pro*C compiler on a Redhat 9 Linux and Oracle 8.1.7, I have a problem with typedef __builtin_va_ as shown below. The $ORACLE_HOME/precomp/admin/pcscfg.cfg contains the following entries:

........1
PCC-S-02201, Encountered the symbol "__builtin_va_list" when expecting one of th
e following:
auto, char, const, double, enum, float, int, long,
ulong_varchar, OCIBFileLocator OCIBlobLocator,
OCIClobLocator, OCIDateTime, OCIExtProcContext, OCIInterval,
OCIRowid, OCIDate, OCINumber, OCIRaw, OCIString, register,
short, signed, sql_context, sql_cursor, static, struct,
union, unsigned, utext, uvarchar, varchar, void, volatile,
a typedef name,
The symbol "enum," was substituted for "__builtin_va_list" to continue.Sorry! I have not explain it clearly.
To solve it , you do following :
1. locate stdarg.h ( or find /usr -name stdarg.h ), assume you find a stdarg.h in /usr/lib/gcc-lib/XXX/XXX/include/stdarg.h
2.ln -s /usr/lib/gcc-lib/XXX/XXX/include/stdarg.h /usr/include/stdarg.h or cp /usr/lib/gcc-lib/XXX/XXX/include/stdarg.h /usr/include
( above 2 step was to make Pro*C can find stdarg.h in /usr/include )
3. for file stddef.h do like step 1,2
4. append a line in your Pro*C config file:
CODE=ANSI_C

Problem with TypeDef and Ring constants
Hi folks!
I've got a problem with my Ring-TypeDef.
I defined a ring control as a Strict TypeDef, hoping that all constants of this Ring will be updated when I change the definition as it does with Enums.
This does not work. Changes of the TypeDef take effect on the Ring control but not on the constants.
Has anyone an idea how to fix or workaround this?
TIA
Kevin.Mark, as I understand it the idea with ring control/constants is that you can make pairs like the ones described:
yes: 1
no: 99
cancel: -1
but when you create a ring constant say, this feature is turned off, it behaves like a enum. In order to use this non continous numbering you need to uncheck "Sequential values" in propeties/Edit items. This took me some time to find the first time, and today I again looked a good half hour for it again!
Hope this was what you were asking.

Problem with 'GetType' Function calling in MSVC++
Hello
I have problem with the function in TestStand API .
When I call the function " GetType " with the following statements in
a DLL called from TestStand (NI) implemented in MS VC ++
, it does not work and this exception is caught by the ONLY ' try catch ' block
to catch exceptions in TestStand API giving the error message
" Unexpected operating system error".
VARIANT_BOOL ok;
VARIANT_BOOL hi;
BSTR Name;
PropertyObject *property = (*step_)->AsPropertyObject();
( *step_ is a STEP Object of type Step* *step_ )
property = property->GetPropertyObject( "TS.SData", 0);
enum TS:ropertyValueTypes i = property->GetType( "" , 0 , &hi , &ok
, &Name);//Problem
Please solve my problem.
You can email me at [email protected]
Thankyou very much.
Best regards
Fahad EjazHello,
The problem is that the Name is not initialized (the BSTR is defined as OLECHAR*). Thus, replace the
BSTR Name;
declaration with the following lines:
char buf[1024];
BSTR Name = _bstr_t(buf);
This should solve the problem.
Best Regards,
Silvius

WLS 7.0 sp2 - Servlet Problems with SOAP messages
I'm using Weblogic 7.0 SP2 and trying to create a Servlet to receive SOAP wrapped
XML messages. I'm getting the following error. Is this a problem with WLS7.0sp2's
support of JAXM? The System.out.println's indicate I have successfully received
the incoming SOAP request and then successfully formatted the SOAP response, but
upon returning saving the response it appears to blow up. Does anyone have any
suggestions?
I need to do the following in a servlet:
- receive an incoming SOAP request with an embedded XML message
- perform some processing
- return a SOAP response with an embedded XML message
Should I be using JAXM? Or can I do this same task easily with JAX-RPC?

Michael,
I got the same error on WLS8.1/Win2K professional and apache FOP (old version).
After digging into the WLS code and FOP(old version). i found the conflict happens
on
the "org.xml.sax.parser" system property. In WLS code, they hard coded like the
following when startup weblogic server:
System.setProperty("org.xml.sax.parser", "weblogic.xml.jaxp.RegistryParser");
But the FOP code try to use the "org.xml.sax.parser" system property to find the
sax parser then conlict happens.
Here is the response from BEA support :
"I consulted with our developers regarding the question of whether we can change
the hard-coded value for the java system property: org.xml.sax.parser by using
a configuration parameter and I found that unfortunately there is no specific
setting to change the value. As you had mentioned in your note the org.xml.sax.parser
system property can be changed programmatically in your application code."
I solve my problem by using newer apache FOP (it never use the system property:org.xml.sax.parser
any more) and XML Registy for WLS8.1.
Good luck.

Help.
When we migrated from WLS 6.1 to WLS 7.0 SP2 when encountered a problem
with XML
parsing that did not previously exist.
We get the error "weblogic.xml.jaxp.RegistryParser is not a SAX driver".
What does this mean? And, what should we do about it.

WSIF generation problem when enum is used
All,
We are currently developing EJB 3.0 and are exposing them using WSIF to the BPEL process. We have some enum class and when we generate WSIF we are getting JAX-RPC complaint problem.Has anyone faced this problem and do we have solution for the same?
regards,
M.RajeshI guess ENUM is problem with OC4J Web Services stack all way along. Usually ENUM is supposed to be exposed as xsd:restriction or so. I had metalink issue open for it.

Latest version is not very good! I am using Firefox and have just installed the latest version (11,7,700,224). Playing Forge of Empires it is massively laggy, can wait for several minutes before it accepts mouse clicks (when scrolling so far as I can see - it just blocks); and the bug which causes it to crash whenever the screen is turned off is still there.
tHIS IS MY PROBLEM:
I have problems with adobe flash 11.7.700.224 that it is causing my Mozilla Firefox to constantly crash, 20 times in 5 seconds. And now I have another problem with adobe flash that it interfears with Mozilla Firefox making it not to work.
