Problems with File Sharing.... prev query unanswered

Hello everyone,
I posted this query last month and have yet to solve the problem. I was hoping for some fresh ideas.
I am running a network on an OS X Server between three labs (around 50 computers connected). One lab has 3 IBMs running with Windows XP that are connected directly to a switch (via cable) and 1 IMac that runs from an airport device (Base).
The second lab has 3 computers running from the switch, and 3 Macs running from an additional airport baystation (located in that lab).
The problem I am having deals with file sharing. We have several folders which all users have access to ("public" folders) as well as "user" folders which allow access to the individual users, faculty members, and the admin account.
All permissions under "server preferences" seem to be defined appropriately.
Eg) selected "only those registered users" with specified user access indicated.
Initially after setup, all folder access within the two primary labs appears correct on all computers. However, within a few days, all Macs that run from the Baystation in the second lab no longer show correct folder access.
No problems occur with the IMac in the first lab.
Typically only one student folder will appear, and it will not be the correct one. No public folders show up (or rarely do). I had thought it may be a problem with users logging out, so I changed settings to induce an automatic logout after 30min of inactivity. This worked at first, but the problem again started after a few days.
I have tried many things and this problem still seems to occur within a few days of having fixed it. I am wondering if it may be an issue with the Baystation, though I am not sure how to address this. Any ideas would be much appreciated!!
Thanks.

Hi There,
We have just upgraded all design computers to imac and  upgraded our software to CS5 and we are still having the same problem.
I  called Adobe at the beginning of the week and they told me to speak to  our IT department as it could be an issue with the preferances on out  network.
Last time I spoke with IT they told me it was an Adobe issue. I  am still very concerned about it but I have a tiny bit of relief that  someone else is having the same trouble (although very annoying).
Any ideas on how to fix it? Are you running a windows server?
Please let me know if you find out any relevant info on this and I will do the same.
Thanks

  • Problem with File Sharing-Permissions throughout Folders

I'm having an odd problem when setting up a Mac Pro with File Sharing. I have a second Hard Drive in it which is a Server Drive to be shared as a networked Hard Drive for both my MBP and my Fiancee's MBP. Here is the problem I have.
I set up File Sharing and set up both her ID and my ID. Since this is done she is able to get to drive from my MBP and she is able to get to the drive from her MBP. I am able to read or write to those folders. She is able to view them but is unable to write to them.
I went to the Server Drive icon on the Mac Pro's Desktop. When I right click and do "Get Info" and select Sharing I can tell her ID is not listed on any of the Folders. She is listed as Read and Write for the entire Hard Drive (which is an internal drive). I am also listed as Read and WRite and then it lists Everyone and says No Access. The same is listed in System Preferences in File Sharing. I have heard this Everyone 'No Access' can cause problems but I prefer not to give access to everyone. The only other option is Read Only and Read and Write. Also, when I have Everyone selected the - sign is greyed out so I'm unable to remove Everyone.
To continue, what is strange is I thought with it saying on the Server Drive itself for my Fiancee, read & write, that it would say this on every Folder inside. Yet when I select any Folder inside on the Server Drive and select Get Info it says for me "Read & Write" and for Staff "Read Only" and for Everyone "Read only" I'm not even sure where Staff comes fro and of course Everyone is Read Only and my Fiancee not even listed. It just seems that these file sharing permissions are not replicated througout all the Folders when I select it for the Hard Drive itself. What could be causing this and how can I get the same to go throughout the Folders? I know manually I could change them all but this would take a long time and likely still be a problem when any additional Folders are added.

    1. I have turned logged into it from my MBP while at Home and if I'm logged in as Guest I only see the Server Drive which is good. My concern is that if I log in with my login I then sell all Folders including the Main 'Macintosh HD' At least as a guest I can only see the Server Drive but is it any way I can stop it from showing all the other folders on the computer since I have no reason to do that?
When you login to a mac as an administrator it is normal to see all the contents of the volumes connected to that mac.
    2. Also, I would like to disable all access for Guest. Yet I have it list Everyone or Guest in the file sharing and I have no way of deleting this. I don't want a Guest to be able to connect to this computer or share any files at all on it. Is there any way to disable this?
    Goto system preferernces-->accounts
click on the lock to and enter your password to unlock the preference pane.
Then select the guest account. Then uncheck the 2 check boxes. The account should now have 'disabled' underneath it.
    3. Security: How secure is this? I am using it on a Home Wi-Fi network with an Airport Base Station 1GB. I have the Leopard filewall set to "Set Access for Specific Services" since it won't work with "Allow only essential services" I hope my home network is more security but with Back to my Mac how hard would it be for someone to be able to find this computer on the network? I don't do any filesharing on my MBP but do have it set up for File Sharing but only with my login ID.
If you have your base station set to distribute ip addresses then it is acting as a NAT router and will firewall you.
I have not setup back to my mac yet so can't comment on its security. Although I would suggest a strong password.
have a read of Mac OS X 10.5: About Back to My Mac security
My method of remote access is to use SSH and run screen sharing over an SSH tunnel.

  • Time Capsule - problems with file sharing

Time Capsule is working great with Time Machine, but I can't copy files to it even after enabling file sharing in AirPort Utility. I'd really like to move my iTunes library to it since the external drive it currently lives on is full and the TC has about 1.96TB still free. Any thoughts on what the problem is? I see it under "shared" in Finder, but all I can see is the "data" folder and I get warnings that the drive is read only. Thanks for any help you all might be able to provide!

Not Bob .. but it is fairly simple.
When we say external drive we mean a drive plugged physically directly into the Mac.
It can then be backed up by TM.
Just open the TM preference and click on the options.. it should automagically include all disks connected to local machine. You can exclude a drive though. Make sure nothing is excluded .. if it is uncheck it.
TM cannot backup a Network drive but can use a drive as long as it is correctly formatted and accessible to Mac OS as a target for the backup.
I would also recommend you do a straight backup of your disk. 500GB drive is cheap. Get a USB holder and do that direct file copy or use a software like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. The later can make a direct copy of the disk in the freeware version. IMHO it is a lot easier to recover.. the increments if you already have the bulk.

  • Problems with file sharing

I'm having a lot of problems setting up OS X 10.5 server. Help with any/all of these issues would be much appreciated.
    1. Sometimes, the server "forgets" that my administrator account exists. That is, I log off/restart/shut down normally, and then I can't log back in with my administrator account. I use the installation DVD to reset the password for the localadmin account (whose password no longer works), and when I log in as localadmin, my administrator account is gone & must be re-created. The home folder is still there and intact, so once I re-create the account, I can log in from it and my desktop & dock etc are just like they should be. But it's inconvenient to have to keep doing this; it's happened twice in less than a week. Any suggestions?
    2. I'm trying to set up a "Group File Sharing Folder" as described in the manual. It says "make sure file sharing service is on and access to the Groups shared folder is turned on". I have turned file sharing service on, but I can't figure out how to turn on access to the Groups shared folder. (I tried going to the "File Sharing" section of "Server Preferences" and clicking the plus and selecting the Groups folder, but when I do so the "Open" option greys out, so it cannot be shared. I don't know what else to try.)
    3. Also, when I try to connect to the server from a client computer, the only share that I see available is one called "Empty". But I haven't set up a share called "Empty", and as far as Spotlight will tell me I don't even have a folder called "Empty" on my computer. So how do I get rid of this "Empty"? (If I add a share, it shows up in addition to "Empty".)
    4. Finally, is there any documentation about file permissions? I'm coming from Server 10.3, and I'm very confused by files/folders apparently belonging to more than one group/user, and it doesn't seem possible to change which user/group a file/folder belongs to anymore (without going to the terminal). What's going on?

I would create another user in the local domain with a different username that you are certain isn't already used. Give the user administrative privileges. Then the next time that this happens, you can login with this alternate admin user, and determine what the problem is.
Without logging in and looking at the logs and LDAP records, you can only speculate what it might be. Are there two users with the same username, one in the local domain, and another in the shared (network) domain?

  • Problem with File Sharing  -- Intel IMac Powerbook G4

When I try to connect to my Intel IMac from my G4 laptop, I am able to make an initial connection for file sharing, but when I try to browse the mounted volume, the files don't show up and after about 30 seconds the connection breaks, I get a 'Server Connection Interrupted' message, and the file sharing on the IMac turns off automatically.
Both OSs are up to date. Connection to G4 from IMac works correctly.
Is this happening for anyone else? Any ideas on how I might fix this?
    Thanks

I too have the same problem, a Powerbook that won't let anything connect to it via Personal File Sharing. And I haven't found any explanation in these forums or otherwise. I'm pulling my hair out here...
Simple ethernet network with a Mini & PB G4, OS 10.4.7.
I can sometimes connect to the PB from the Mini via Personal File Sharing. But I always get the "server connection interrupted" dialog, as soon as I try to access the mounted drives. Then the Mini's finder hangs up, and I have to force quit, sometimes taking the entire system down with it.
I've tried connecting to the PB with other machines, and I get the same "server connection interrupted" problem. On the PB, I've rebuilt permissions, deleted /library/preferences/SystemConfiguration..., turned on & off all combinations of services and Directory Access, run fsck, created a fresh account, pretty much everything besides re-installing my system. Nothing fixes the problem.

  • Problem with file sharing - Lion to Mountain Lion

I have two MBP's.  One is running Lion (2011 vintage), the other is running Mountain Lion (2012 vintage).  They are connected on my home network as follows:
MBP with Lion --> Ethernet cable --> D-Link Router --> Airport Extreme
MBP with Mountain Lion --> via WiFi to the Airport Extreme (five bars of signal strength)
I turned on file sharing in the MBP/Lion machine and made a couple of folders shared.  Then I went to the MBP/Mountain Lion machine and saw the MBP/Lion machine in the sidebar of a finder window, under the shared devices section.  I clicked on that icon, and the MBP/Mountain Lion tried to connect for a minute or two then told me it couldn't.  I tried this two more times and it failed both times.
Then I tried connecting using the "Connect to Server..." command in the finder.  I entered the afp address of the MBP/Lion machine, and the MBP/Mountain Lion machine still failed to connect.
If anybody can help resolve this so that I can access the shared folders, I would appreciate it very much.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Did you try to use Guest account. Make sure it is ON on the Lion machine and permissions are set properly. Then try to connect again from ML.
If that works you have usthentication / permissons issues with the account you are using.
If it does not work let us know and we will take it from that point.
Guest ON is only for testing. I would not leave guest account on unless you know the risk and are OK with that.

  • Problem with file permissions using Snow Lepord

I'm having problems with file Sharing & Permissions using Snow Lepord.
When I save any new file it only has 'Read & Write' privileges for the user, everyone else is 'read only' or 'no access'.
We have a Netgear NAS Server which is accessed by other users over the local network and if I change the Privilege to 'read & write' via Get Info and then copy the file from my desktop to ther server it changes the Privilege of the server version to 'no access' we then have to change it again for it to work.
I also created a new folder on the server and now it says 'no access' and has a no entry icon!
    Any ideas???

We have issues like this. Have tried running AFP and SMB, now connecting using CIFS. All have the same problem. I can work on one or two files fine, then suddenly, one of the files I just worked on says I don't have permissions. I log off the server and log back on, and then I have permissions to the file. It will work fine for one or two operations, then fails. We just updated to OSX Mavericks and a Windows 2012 server, but have been having this issue for years. My permissions look fine. I can even change permissions, but it won't let me work on the file or move or delete the file or rename the file. Once I log out and log back in, I can do anything I want.

  • Problem using File sharing  in a small office network

I have a problem using File sharing on an Imac and Macbook Pro.
My office has a small network running Windows Small office file server 2003. I have one Windows 2000 PC connected to it and 3 Macs, an 2.4 gHz Intel iMac running Leopard 10.5.6 , a MBP running the same and a Mac Mini running 10.5.
From the Finder Shared window of the Mac Mini, I can see all the computers on the network. It also used to be the case for the iMac, but the MBP could never see the Windows PC’s, not the server or the Win2000. This wasn’t a big problem as I was communicating between the Macs and using the shared printer on the iMac.
On Monday Jan 19 the iMac was suddenly unavailable to the other 2 Macs. It was working normally on the Friday. The iMac can access the Mac Mini and copy files to it. The Mac Mini can see the iMac but cannot access it. Even trying to connect as, ends in a failed connection. I have tried rebooting, turning File sharing off and then on again to no avail.
The iMac now also cannot see the Windows PC’s which it previously could.
To get files from the MBP for printing, I now copy it to the Mac Mini and acces the folder from the iMac, a very tedious procedure. I don’t know why this happened and am scared that the Mac Mini is going to do the same thing.
All three computers are also running VMware 2.0 with Windows XP pro, and from VMware the server is visible on all the computers.
Any help will be much appreciated, I live in a small town in South Africa and the local computer suppliers have no knowledge of the Macs.
I think that the problem with the iMac may have started after a software upgrade to 10.5.6 but I am not entirely sure.
    Thank you
    ajdk

Well, you're current method sounds pretty good. But if you want to user a file server, hey go ahead.
What you want to do when you centralize project files is to keep track of which one is the newest and becareful not to overwrite files with the same name. So you either have to set up individual spaces on the server (separate AFP/FTP folders maybe), or you'll need to run a file checkout service.
The individual space is cheaper, but it's not much of a difference from backing up to the network drive. Since you have Gigabit connections, you might even opt to save ALL the user files on the server instead of just the project files.
If you want to run a file checkout service, there's two approaches. You can run a service that can host any kind of file, or you can run a version control system for each kind of application (Photoshop, Word, etc.). Please notice, that as you read further and further along, the methods become more and more expensive and complicated. Once you get to this point, it will be necessary to purchase or build software in addition to the Mac OS X Server package.

  • Problem using file sharing and screen sharing in Leopard

I have Mac OS 10.5 Leopard installed on 4 computers in a Home Network and have a problem with sharing files and using screen sharing. Here is my setup.
MacBook Pro with my logon ID
MacBook Pro with my fiancee's logon ID
Mac Mini with both of our logon ID's
Mac Pro with both of our logon ID's
The problem I have is I am able to access the Mac Mini computer where we have an external Hard Drive connected for data. She is also able to access it. The only problem is we have it set up to only share this external USB drive. Yet for both of us it shares the external drive along with the internal Macintosh HD. Fortunately this is not a very big deal but since I'm not sharing all those drives why is it doing this?
Also, I am able to connect from the Mac Mini for example to my MBP and vice versa for screen sharing along with file sharing. Yet if she tries to connect to the Mac Pro from her MBP and vice versa it won't. It simply times out and will never connect for screen sharing or file sharing but yet the Finder shows the Mac Pro. We have a 2nd hard drive in the Mac Pro which is the one set up for file sharing. I am also unable to connect to the Mac Pro's HD. Everything appears to be set up correctly. For my MBP on the Finder it shows the Mac Pro but once again I am unable to connect to it for screen sharing or file sharing.
Also, not sure if it's related but even for her MBP she is unable to connect to it from any other computer in our network although it's set up for file sharing and screen sharing so I'm not sure if it's related to her logon ID. Then again as mentioned above neither of us can connect to the Mac Pro.
I tried to make the above sound as simple as possible. I am relatively new to networking and of course Leopard but even on the Mac Pro all settings sound the same as on the Mac Mini where we can both connect to. The only big difference is on the Mini we are connect to a USB external drive, on the Mac Pro an internal drive. Is there something I could have overlooked or are there known issues with Leopard's sharing features?
We both have .mac but since we are using this on an internal network (some wi-fi, some wired, all through an Airport Base Station Extreme) I would think this has nothing to do with Back to my Mac.
I appreciate any help with the above.

  • Problem with File Based replication in Weblogic Express 10

    Hi,
We have Web application (exploded war) file deployed on Weblogic Express 10, to a Cluster of three Managed Servers (all three on different physical machines).
We are using File based session persistance in weblogic.xml
We have a shared location for all the three servers where we will be sharing the Session data.
When we start the application, its works fine and is very fast, but after sometime the application slows down.
Troubleshooting the Issue we found that its a problem with file based replication. By using File based replication every user session is stored in form of directory inside shared directory. So after sometime thousands of directories are created inside the shared directory where the session information is stored. So when we access the application, its waiting for lot of time with Message Session Monitor .... (this is because its browsing through the shared session storage directory for lot of time for session information as it has lot of directories) and finally after a long time like 10 mins we get the Application Home Page.
When we clean up all the saved sessions inside shared directory, the application works fine, But we will see the same sometime later may be after 3 or 4 hours when the shared session directory has lot of session information stored in it.
Is there a way to clean up the saved session information on file system as soon as that user session is closed by using file based replication.
We cannot used Inmemory replication as our Appl doesnt support it.
Please advice as it is a major show stopper in our Production Mirror env.

It is possible to reduce number of live session by configuring very low timeout-secs weblogic.xml. Default is 60 minutes.

  • Problems with File Transfers Over Firewire 800

Problems with File Transfers Over Firewire 800.
Over the past month, I have had problems when transfering files from my harddrive, over Firewire 800 to a portable drive. I usually transfer very large files (20gb or more) to the portable drives for moving files around. When I drag a file over to copy onto a drive, the transfer starts normally. If I drag more files to copy over, the computer screen goes darker and a large icon comes up that looks like a power button icon. It tells me to restart, so I have to do a hard shut down on my G5. Weird. I also get the dark screen of death sometimes when I am transfering those large files and open another application to do some work while it's copying. It's killing me. I am having to sit here and wait for the transfer to finish before I can do anything.
    Any thoughts...

  • Error while opening pdf in reader in windows 8:Can't open this file. There's a problem with file format

I have a problem with a pdf file which does not open with reader in windows 8 but it opens properly with adobe pdf reader. All other pdf can be opened in reader. But when i open a pdf(see this link for pdf for which i got error http://incometaxsoft.com/temp/Form.pdf)
it gives error as "Can't open this file. There's a problem with file format".
The same file opens properly in adobe pdf reader. You can check the pdf file which i have mentioned in the link above. But the reader which comes with windows 8 can open some other pdf in the same PC.What may be the error causing this??

This has turned out to be an enormous issue for me as I sell PDF files as ebooks. I have done a fair amount of investigating this for my system.
My files have to be compatible not just across readers but across operating systems.
To date, I have over 200 PDFs that have functioned flawlessly across Mac, PC (Windows 7 and below), Android, iPhone/iPad, Linux.
I personally test my PDFs using a variety of readers and PDF editors including
    PDF XChange (my favorite)
Foxit (runner up for me and I recommend for most people)
    Adobe (the bloated monster)
Nitro 9 (great for moving graphical elements around)
    ABBYY
And the Nuance PDF Create toolsets
Those are off the top of my head. There are a bunch on Android that I test with too.
I am running the Windows 10 Pro Tech Preview and I have this same problem so I know it isn't fixed yet in any kind of pre-release way (-sigh-)
Here is what I've learned for my situation
The PDFs I created using NUANCE'S PDF CREATE PROFESSIONAL VERSION 8
all fail using the built-in Windows 8/10 PDF reader.
When I look at the PDF properties for these Nuance created files, the underlying engine used to write them is called "ImageToPDF". Using ABBYY it indicates their own engine as does everyone else that I've tried. It is easy for you to check to see
what created your PDF by doing a "Control D" (look at the document properties). Perhaps there's a common engine causing issues.
If I use the exact same source files to create a PDF using any of my other tools I have no issues. I checked the PDF versions made by the tools and they are all set to 1.5.
A customer mentioned being able to convert them in a way they worked by saving them without having to do any kind of extraction, but I have not been able to duplicate that. Perhaps he did a "print" which seems like it could work.
In summary, the workaround everyone is talking about, using an alternate reader, of course works. But not everyone wants to change.
The culprit I have found is my Nuance PDF Creation tools that are using the ImageToPDF engine.
I hope it gets FIXED as I really don't want to have to regenerate all of my PDF files.

Is anyone having the same type of problems I'm having with Lion. I have a new MacBook Pro, received 7 weeks ago, preinstalled with Leopard 10.6.7. I didn't migrate anything from my old iMac, wanted a clean install from the Apple Store. While there, I asked for the upgrade to Lion 10.7, however their system was down.
I  installed it myself, wirelessly about a week later, and Apple emailed me a receipt. Now, I've had to call support directly last week when I lost Mail, Address Book, was unable to open Preview or iTunes, among other problems. Seemed fixed after a session that baffled even the store tech.  Now I am unable to download or install the recent Mac updates for Lion, from the App Store, could not install Adobe Reader, etc. Messages range from 'A network error has occured - Check your Internet connection and try again' to 'The Installer is damaged and cannot open the package. There may be a problem with file ownership or permissions.'  All fail and I'll probably have to call Apple again. I am frustrated beyond words.  Logs 'Install's runner tool is not properly configured as a setuid tool', domain errors, 'attempt to write a readonly database, and on and on. I have barely done a thing on this computer except search online for help with these problems. Safari gives me a 'You are not connected to the internet' too often. Diagnostics disagrees. I do see wi-fi problems in the forum. Disk and permissions were fine at the beginning of the earlier problems, checked first by support tech. I'm not sure if support tech even knew. I was just happy they were fixed. Anyone have these download and/or install problems after a 'clean bill of health' so to speak, only a week ago?

  • Windows 8.1 ICS with file sharing between computers

Can someone help me get ICS working with file sharing between two computers (directly connected), without enabling file sharing on the internet network (on a public untrusted network)?  Is this possible?  I have set up ICS between two Windows 8.1
machines, but i can only get file sharing to work in one direction (from machine B to machine A)... UNLESS I turn on file sharing/discovery with the entire network from machine A (which i do not want to do).  I am not sure this exact question has been

    Here is my configuration.

Machine B: win 8.1 (up to date), one NIC, a gigabit card connected to machine A

On Machine A:  I enabled ICS on machine A's wireless card, which automatically assigned the IP address 192.168.137.1 to the second NIC
On Machine B:DHCP was enabled so it automatically got an ip address (192.168.137.62), internet sharing works fine (i can open a browser, get email, etc.)
On Machine B: I enabled "Find devices and content" on the network device
On Machine A: Going into "view network settings" it lists my wireless network and the gigabit NIC.  The wireless under 'Wi-Fi' says 'Connected', and i can click on this and I have the option to turn on "Find devices and content".
On the wifi connection, i leave 'Find devices and content' turned OFF (so i don't discover computers on the wireless network, which is a public network).  My gigabit NIC shows up as "unidentified network"/"Limited".
When i click on the gigabit NIC, it does NOT give me an option to turn on "Find devices and content", it just shows some properties of the NIC (manufacturer, description, driver, mac address) and button that says "Copy".  On
the gigabit connection's properties (which is listed as "unidentified network/limited"), the option for 'Find devices and content' is missing.
On Machine A: I open a file browser and type '\\192.168.137.62' and it works correctly, i can see the computer and move files around.
On Machine B: It doesn't work.  I open a file browser and type in "\\192.168.137.1", and nothing happens.
If i enable 'Find devices and content' on machine A's wifi connection, everything works, but now everyone on the public network can see my computer.
Question:  How can i enable file sharing between machine A and machine B ONLY?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

The whole point of public networks is that they are unsafe, so file sharing is not permitted for your protection.
If you have a network which you know is safe, the way to get file sharing working is to change your security policy so that it is set to private, not public. You do this from the local security policy (on the ICS computer).
