Problems with LR4.4

I downloaded LR 4.4 today and since then many of my catalogue previews have an exclamation mark and say "There was an error working with this photo". What is this all about and how do I fix it?

Can you open these images in Develop module?
What OS and version are you using?
What file type are affected and are these images on the local harddrive or on a network share or external drive?

Importing problems with LR4

I import from memory card. After a few seconds of importing the pictures, it goes to a black screen that says "please select a source" Using LR4 on a PC running vista. I have tried copying the picture to a folder on my harddrive but when I ask LR to import it says there is nothing in that folder. I have checked the pictures are there.

Codec packs, even the "better" ones, do not typically provide codecs that Premiere and Encore can use.
The "problem" file is a flash format (whether it is an mp4 container or not).
"Consumer" type DVD authoring/burning applications, and even more so, all in one apps like windows movie maker etc, may be more "powerful" when you are trying to take a large range of formats and create a DVD with relatively few options. This is not Encore's strength.
Encore will reject almost anything that has flaws it isn't able to handle, but more importantly (once you get to this step), it will treat as noncompliant (and re-transcode) anything that is not DVD compliant.
My guess is that you need to get the flash into something that will work better for transcoding to DVD compliant.
I would first try to bring one of the problem files into Adobe Media Encore, and see if you can export an MPEG2-DVD file.
Not that, while there are some less known DVD resolutions, I assume you are going to end up with 720x576 PAL. I wonder what the quality will look like....
If you are just looking to get the files onto a DVD to play on a DVD player, just stick with DVDStyler.

Continuing problems with LR4 RC2

Although I have read many postings saying that RC2 took care of the performance problems in 4.0, it certainly has not been true for me. If I edit more than a few images in one session, it slows to a crawl, showing the windows circle for long periods of time and often refusing to redraw images on the screen. It routlinely fails to return a regular cursor in the left hand develop panel. Some sliders will work OK, but others work so slowly that they are unusable--nothing happens at all, and the abruptly, the adjustment will to to an extreme. often there is no choice but to close the program down and restart it. I love some of the new features (especially softproofing and the new tonal sliders), but this is so bad that I just downloaded 3.6 to reinstall. 3.6 ran without a hitch on the same computer, as did earlier versions of 3.
I had read that problems are more common with nVidia cards, but I have an ATI. I'll post system information below.
This week I started hunting on line, and it looks like I am hardly alone--lots of people report similar problems, but some report none at all.
Does any one know of any steps one can take to make some of these problems less severe? Or when there might be a new release?

Frankly, this was just not ready for prime time. Adobe should have withheld release until more of the bugs were worked out.

Resolution problems with LR4 and Blurb

I am using RAW files and trying to make a Blurb book with full bleed pages. The warning indicator keeps prompting me that the resolution is less than the 200ppi minimum needed for the full size page. I thought with RAW files I would have plenty of data to make a full page image in a large (11x13) book.

You can do the math: 11 inch with 200 pixels per inch need 2200 pixel edge. 13 inch need 2600 pixels minimum.
Do you mean 2-page-spreads? Then it would need 22 inch x 13 inch, hence 4400x2600.
You will see your image dimensions in the metadata panel.
Did you crop some image below that?
What resolution has your camera, which native ratio?
If your values should fit, I would expect some bug in the book module.

Problems with LR4 - Develop Module - Edit in CS5

I've just upgraded from LR3 to 4
When I make adjutments on a RAW or JPEG file in the develop module, and then send it to PS5 for more work, not all the adjustments show up in CS5.
Example, I cropped an image, and then made local exposure adjustments using the 'brush' tool.
Exported to CS5 using 'Photo' 'Edit in', and the image goes to CS but only the crop adjustment is showing.
I've done all the updates on CS, but this is a pain.
I'm running a MAC with Snow Leopard OS
Can I uninstall the upgrade and reinstall..? Would that be any use...??

I was greatly confused by all this for a while, but think I finally figured it out, thanks to CSS Simon and others here (I'm new to Lightroom, having only used Ps/ACR previously).
What happens is that "render using Lightroom" doesn't involve ACR at all. It goes straight to Photoshop (and puts the rendered file alongside the raw). The other option, "open anyway", renders the file through ACR. But ACR 6.6 and before can't read PV2012, that's why you need to install the ACR 6.7 Release Candidate, which can (although it doesn't give you access to the 2012-specific sliders).
Another thing that tripped me up at first was that no Lightroom edits at all would show up in Bridge or ACR, even with ACR 6.7 installed. I finally discovered that I had to set Lightroom catalog settings to "automatically write metadata changes to xmp" - otherwise all Lightroom edits would just exist in the Lightroom catalog and not be visible to other applications.
This is of no importance if you only use Lightroom, but it certainly is if you have a mixed workflow with Photoshop and Bridge.

Having problems with LR4 and NAS stored files.

I recently established a NAS Raid 5 to store my photo library. I have found out that LR4 does not sinc up to the stored files. Are there any solutions.

Problem with LR4 Smart Collections

I have set up a set of smart collections to aid in my work flow. This is how I wish for it to work. Problem is that the photos will not move down thur the workflow. I also want to drag my newly imported photos to workflow collection set to begin the process.

Thanks for the reply. No I haven't see your workflow smart collections, I would like to see them. Where can I see them. As to the movement of my photos. I guess I mean that once I have completed a step I want the photo to move to the next step set by the conditions of the smart collection and so on till all photos are ready to be disbursed. A Problem with LR 4.1 update

With Lightroom 4.0 (64 bits), everything goes normal. When I clicked "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS5.." the edited raw file was exported to CS5 photoshop in "tif" format.
After updating Lightroom 4.1 today, LR no longer generates "DSC-1234-Edit.tif" and exports to CS5 photoshop in "NEF" format. It appears that there is a problem with LR4.
How can I fix this problem? I am running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) with 8 GB RAM.

I am working on raw images. I am shooting NEF with Nikon 7000.
LR 4.1 is a problem. Editing NEF files in in development module works fine but It does not produce tif files at all.
I restored to LR4.0 (I now restsored a mirror image of Windows partition conaining LR 4).
LR4.0 produced tif files with the same raw files used in LR 4.1 and exported tif files to Photoshop CS5.
It looks that I should stick to LR 4.0.

What is problem with Lightroom 5 slide show??

This is a repeat question since it is impossible to get an answer from Adobe. Possibly THE worst technical support of any product I have ever purchased!! I upgraded to LR 5. The slide show does not work. I only get a black screen while the slides advance. This was not a problem with LR4. My saved slide shows do not work and new ones created in LR 5 don't work. Adobe gave some ridiculous answer about the name of the files with some sort of ID in them. The answer made no sense. I have changed nothing in my OS or my file structure. Some people are experiencing this problem since there were several people posting the same issue. Why can't we get a timely and credible answer from Adobe on this problem? Anybody have a solution? I went back to LR 4 and no issue with the saved slide shows. Help please!! LR 5.4 upgrade did not fix the problem either.
Come on Adobe fix your very expensive software product that I paid cash for!!

I posted this 8 months ago with NO responses. Incompatibility of Lightroom 5 and Mac OS 10.7.5 on a MacPro. I bought Lightroom last week and struggled to get a slideshow to be exported. After many hours of testing I have concluded that the slideshow export delivers blank slides and blank video (though audio comes through) EXCEPT that the picture shows up during the transition ONLY. Please correct this problem. The problem does NOT occur on my MacBook Air with OS 10.8.5
I saw Rob Cole's suggestion: what can be corrected in either the monitor profile or video driver?

LR4 Beta...another problem with using Lens Correction

Not sure if it's me or the beta. I'm trying to do a lens correction on a file that was edited in CS5. The photos were taken in 2009/10. They are importing as Process 2012.
I'm using the Lens Correction in manual. About 15 seconds after I start using the sliders, my LR stops working and I have to close the program (white outs the screen with the note saying the program has to be closed).
I do know there can be problems with a beat so I wanted to post this problem in case it is a bug in the system.

I have the same probem if I try to push the scale slider down below about 87%. It is quite annoying when it keeps happening on the same photo. It's not something I use a lot but it can be necessary with tall buildings when the correction pushes the top out of the frame.

PS CS 6 & LR 4.1 problems with Raw

There seems to be a big problem with CS6 (and LR4.1.) with some raw files. My computer has now been logged in twice by adobe support personel trying to fix the problem with no luck.
First photoshop was not able to open Canon 5D mk3 / CR2 raw files- that got fixed and LR could not open them any more. That got fixed and the problem returned to Photoshop. The last attempt py adobe personel to fix it was poor and "reading" from a book and trying to fix it did not solve anything. I the formatted my hard drive and reinstalled both applications. It seemed to work fine - until next opening of Photoshop when it coul not open the raw files again!! Really getting tired of this nonsense. Anyone- any ideas??
Just to clarify I do have the latest updates on these applications...

I had this exact same problem, but with PS 5 & LR 4.1; then with PS 6, ACR 7.1 the same damn thing happens! I've uninstalled PS 6, can't afford it anyway. Tried using Adobe's DNG convert, the files "convert" to .DNG but they wouldn't open either. So darn frustrating as the whole system worked fine 2 days ago and now freezes while trying to open anything but a JPG! No changes to computer; MacBook Pro (unibody) 17", 8 GB RAM, 10.6.8.
I went back to 10.6.8, PS 5, ACR 6.7 (my D4 is covered) and reset prefs for both PS & LR and now things are working again.... time to reformat this darn thing and clean it up, what a pain!
BTW, do you or Curt know of a backup program that keeps track of serial #'s?? Having to find all those again will be a pain.

Problems with RAW file conversion in PS5?

I recently updated Photoshop and Lightroom to PS5 and LR3. Never had any problems when I moved between the two programs before. Now, when I open a RAW photo (jpegs are fine) into PS5 there is a colour/contrast shift which gets saved when I import it back to LR (doesn't make a difference if it is LR2 or LR3). This happens even when I do nothing but open the file, do nothing and save it back to LR. I checked and the problem doesn't happen with LR4. I have ensured that my colour spaces and preferences settings are exactly the same in both PS4 and PS5. Please, can anyone help me? I have looked over the commentary on a lot of similar issues but haven't come across the answer. This is important because I am having problems when I send my photos out to a lab to print. I have been having a lot of problems printing (to a lab, not my own printer) since I upgraded to PS5 and LR3 so I am in the process of trying to eliminate all the variables.
The problem I notice is that my RAW files in LR3 (jpegs are fine) change when I work on them in PS5 and save back to LR3 or when I export them as jpegs to my desktop and re-import back to LR3. The photos become darker and slightly more contrasty. I have attached some screen shots. The differences are subtle when
looked at side by side but really quite noticeable when you switch back
and forth between the two. Different photos change more than others.
I have tried various other combinations and the photos stay the same (ie. photo from LR4 to PS5 and back, photo from LR2 to PS4 and back, photo from LR2 to PS5 and back). So I was thinking it was something to do with the way LR3 converts RAW files to other formats.
I use Spyder3 Pro for colour calibration and I have made sure that color spaces are the same across programs. I have also tried Adobe1998 and ProPhoto with the same results.
Thank you for your suggestion to figure out the ACR conversion. I couldn't find the option for plug-ins under "help" so perhaps I am doing something wrong. I think that my ACR is version 6.1.
Any suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated!! My business is getting quite backlogged while I try to figure this all out.

Problems with LR 3.6 ~ how do I go back?

I recently upgraded my LR to 3.6 and am having nothing but problems. The program freezes constantly and it is very hard to get work done. Trying to do anything while an image is loading causes the 3.6 to freeze. Only a 'Force Quit' will allow restarting.
I'm on a 2.16 Ghz Intel Core Duo with 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I'd love to move to LR4 but my processor won't handle 64 bit.
I have never had problems with LR before and use it daily for work.
HOW DO I GO BACK TO THE VERSION BEFORE 3.6?
I can't get any work done here.

Just download the version you want and install it. You'll also need to drag your LR 3.6 to the trash and possibly replace the shortcut in the dock. Any 3.x version will read a 3.y catalogue.

DNG files created with LR4 do not show thumbnails

Hi,
When using LR3 to create DNG files from my RAW files, those files would show me thumbnails of my image in Windows Explorer. I am running Windows/7 (64) and have installed a CODEC from "Fast Picture Viewer" that allows thumbnails from RAW & DNG files to be shown. It seems, however, that the thumbnails do not show for DNG's created with LR4.
To Remedy this I uninstalled the CODEC. Downloaded the most recent version and installed it but this did not fix the problem.
I then went to the user forum for the CODEC product and searched for my problem. I found a thread who's solution is to turn off "Embed Fast Load Data" when exporting to DNG and it fixes the problem. I tried this and indeed it did fix it. The responder went on to say ".....When this option is enabled the files created are no longer DNGs (just an undocumented private format of Adobe that no one else can read to this date)". This statement surprised me as it is counter to what I understand Adobe created DNG to be. Can I get some input on this comment as if true it is very troubling.
My second question is that I see where to turn off the "Embed Fast Load Data" in the LR Export module, but where do I do the same thing in the Import module when I'm selecting import mode "Copy to DNG"?
And, my thrid question is this. If indeed the DNG files created by LR4 are proper DNG files and this CODEC is just flawed in some way, does anyone have a better way to allow image thumbnails to be shown in Windows Explorer?

You testing does not coincide with mine. I have consistently kept "Use
lossy compression" turned off. With lossy turned off, it seems that using
Fast Data Load prevents the thumbnails from displaying whereas turning off
"Fast Data Load" allows the thumbnail to be shown.
Below is comment from Adobe confirming that they have yet to release the
spec containing "Fast Data Load".
