Process killed by SIGALRM randomly
Hi,
We have been observing a strange thing happening to our server processes (multithreaded) on Solaris 5.7. After running the servers for a while, they will be killed by "Alarm Clock". We are never explicitly using alarm in our code. So, the only thing that we can think of is the implementation of sleep because we do use sleep indirectly.
According to the POSIX standard, sleep can be implemented using alarm. The default action to SIGALRM is terminating the process. It seems to be the case now. So if sleep is implemented using alarm, is it possible that the signal handler that sleep registers somehow got lost and the default action is used? Could it be related to multithreaded applications with signals?
I appreciate any relevant information.
Thanks in advance,
Miranda
Hi,
We are using version 7 Solaris. And I believe we are having the latest thread patch and kernel. Please correct me if I am wrong. Our kernel ID is Generic_106541-14. The patch we have for libthread is 106980-15.
We are not using usleep and we are using nanosleep. That's why we are suspecting that it's the implementation of some OS functions using alarm that causes this problem. Since the POSIX standard indicates that sleep can be implemented using alarm. Besides, I found another piece of information from the alarm(2) man page:
Calling alarm() in a multithreaded process linked with
-lthread (Solaris threads) and not with -lpthread (POSIX
threads) currently behaves in the following fashion:
o if the calling thread is a bound thread, the resulting
SIGALRM is delivered to the bound thread's LWP, i.e.
to the calling thread. There is a bug currently that
this signal is not maskable via thr_sigsetmask(3T) on
this bound thread.
o if the calling thread is an unbound thread, the
resulting SIGALRM is sent to the LWP on which the
thread was running when it issued the call to alarm().
This is neither a per-process semantic, nor a per-
thread semantic, since the LWP could change threads
after the call to alarm() but before the SIGALRM
delivery, causing some other thread to get it possi-
bly. Hence this is basically a bug.
Our programs currently do not link with -lpthread, they only have -mt. And I believe we are using unbound threads. So according to the man page, there is a bug if sleep is implemented using alarm and SIGALRM is being sent to the wrong thread!? Does linking with -lpthread help? Should I get rid of the -mt?
FYI, the output of the program when it is being killed is:
<My program's output>
Alarm Clock
You can get the output above very easily by sending SIGALRM to any process which does not catch SIGALRM.
Thanks,
Miranda

Stray process killed by launchd
Hi there,
I am trying to make launchd restart a Java daemon in my Mac. I finally made my plist file work. I use a shell script that kills old java process and starts it from scratch. It works but right after the shell script finishes executing launchd kills the java process with the following error:
Mar 26 21:28:42 Micaias com.apple.launchd[1] (com.skios.smtpserver[8377]): Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 8383 PPID 1 bash
Can I make launchd not to worry about that process? That is the pourpose of the plist file... here it is by the way:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

Thanks for any help/directions
Ignaciotry adding the following to your plist
<key>AbandonProcessGroup</key>

then your launch daemon should look like this

Native process killed/terminated automatically
Hi there,
We have developed Mpeg-2 format streams Scheduling Aplication using JAVA
that invokes a native WIN32(dll) library through JNI.
This Win32(dll) Library further instantiate a COM Executable Server
(CVPROS~1.EXE). The transmission starts sucessfully. But the EXE server
is killed/terminated automaically without raising some exception at some
unpredictable interval of time. It looks the COM EXE server is sub
process of native WIN32Dll and JVM and JNI has not its direct reference.
1- Possibly it look that Java's Garbadge collector kills this process
assuming that its not being refered any where in project .
2- Its being terminated due to some architectural problem .
NOTE: if this Win32Dll is invoked through Win32 Client it works fine and
COM exe Server is never termiated automatically.
help required ???
Thanks in advance. And why do you think it is being killed rather than it is terminating itself?
If exit() is called in the C code, or some variation thereof, then the application will exit.
If System.exit() is called in java then a java app will exit. -
Output Server stops processing files (seemingly) at random
We use Adobe Central Output Server 5.5.0.308 to process Invoices/POs and the like from CommerceCenter (An Epicor/Prophit 21 product). We have three isntances of it running on three seperate terminal servers.
It has been working pretty well for years. Sometimes it would fail to process a certain file or it would stop responding and need to be restarted, but nothing serious and never very often.
Suddenly in the last couple of months it has stopped processing files at random during the day. To get it to start again we have to open the Control Center and go to Control -> Start Server. Then it will process everything in the queue just fine. It has been happening on both of our older 2003 terminal servers fairly often (at least 4 times a week) and just happened for the first time on our new 2008 R2 terminal server.
None of us here know much about Output Server and there is nothing in the Server log or the Event Viewer that indicates any sort of issue, so we are at a loss.
I don't really even know where to begin as the documentation of the relationship between CommerceCenter and Output Server is non-existent.
I'm really looking for any ideas... Maybe somebody has run into this issue before?cnorris63,

When exporting few videos, the process hangs randomly. The processor performance is 0 % and the lightroom says it is working (actually it is not). I have to quit lightroom, kill all processes like amecommand.exe, Adobe Media Core, Adobe Dynamic Link Manager and restart the process. It stops randomly.
I am exporting ALL-I videos from Canon 5D mark III, into H264, high quality.
PS: The same situation was with Lightroom 4.Hello,
i have the same problem on LR5.5 on Win 7 (8G RAM)
Thank you for any help.

Firefox 4.0.1 hangs HARD on XP (cannot kill process)
Multiple times is recent weeks (since the Firefox 4.0.1 update), Firefox has hung on my XP laptop after time (no other obvious influence) and CANNOT be killed! I have had to reboot every time, since no XP process-kill approach works. Presumably, there is no dump from Firefox either, since it just utterly locks up, quietly, and no longer responds to anything.
In Tools->Options Advanced tab->Settings Firefox apparently defaults to
Use system proxy settings
and this causes all kinds of issues, including non-killable hangs, in a VPN/multi-network environment. Since I changed to
Auto-detect proxy settings for the network
several days ago, I have seen no problems. This is a welcome fix, since
I otherwise really like Firefox, and was moving more and more to IE, which
did not have the dead-connection and hang issues described above. -
Firefox 3.6.8 just now on Ubuntu 9.10, but happens on 8.04-10.04 Ubuntu with related older Firefox versions.
Problem is probably related to Youtube/Flash problems, but something gets stuck in Firefox. I can close the main instance of Firefox, but looking in 'top' I can still find processes running for Firefox (sometimes if I try to restart Firefox I will get a note that Firefox is already running). If I kill those 'runaway processes' then restart Firefox I have Youtube/etc sound back.
When this happens all programs on the computer cannot produce sound. When processes killed then sound works all around.I was able to fix this problem on my computer in Windows 7. Try going to start/control panel/programs and then uninstall the flash plugin -
then start browser again go to a flash video and when prompted install plugin again.
This worked well for me let me know how everyone else makes out. -
Late 2011 Macbook Pro 15" random logouts
I just got this laptop from work and have been trying to set it up the past couple of days and in 2 days I have gotten 5 random logouts. I cant seem to pinpoint the cause of the problem. I went over other threads with similar errors, and came up with probable causes being faulty graphics, faulty ram and/or a corrupt file system. I ran GPUTest to benchmark my graphics and nothing came up wrong. Then I ran Memtest several times over(both from my user account and in single user mode) and except for the very first time running while logged in, it always comes up with no errors. To clarify, that first run got killed by a random logout which is why I ran it several more times(5+) to no avail. I have also tried running apple's own hardware tests(expanded) and get no indication of anything being wrong, so i think hardware isn-t the issue. Up next is the full error log for the latest crash, all of them seem to be pretty much equal. Any help would be appreciated.

All Open Applications Quitting Unexpectedly and Randomly
It started last night after I finally allowed App Store to install a bunch of OS X updates that it had wanted to install for quite some time. I'm not 100% sure but I believe one of those updates was for OS X 10.8.4 from 10.8.3 but I may be mistaken and had installed that a bit ago. I do know that among the group of updates was a thunderboldt firmware update, some printer drivers, security updates, etc.
Anyways, this has to be by far the most frustrating issue I have ever experienced on a machine. Basically, I'll just be working on my computer whether it be in Chrome on one of my many tabs or in Evernote writing a note or in any other app and then bam, out of nowhere every single running up on my machine, even those not shown in the dock and only in the status bar will just vanish and quit, without notice or popups. The only app that remains will be Finder (TotalFinder will be killed) and, very randomly, a few of the status bar apps may survive the mutiny. Whatever I have open and was in the middle of working on will be gone. I can't even begin to explain how downright frustrating this is. It has already happened 3 times in a period of 24 hours and I have absolutely no clue what is going on. Before I ran the updates late last night, I hadn't rebooted my machine for 2-3 weeks and I've most certainly never ever experienced any issues remotely related to this.
When reviewing the logs in Console around the time of each occurence, there'll be a flood of errors but I cannot identify the root cause of the issue and am left without any leads after hours and hours of searching the web for other users who might be experiencing this exact behavior. Anything I find that might seem related tends to be just one app that's crashing and just isn't quite what I'm experiencing. Might I add that I am not notified, prompted, or anything when the apps close. Literally, one second I have a bunch of apps running and I'm cruising along and the next, nothing but Finder and a few survivors (they probably were able to recover and restart themselves) in the status bar.
This problem is blowing my mind and it has me about ready to reformat and start from scratch except for the fact that I just don't have the time to set everything back up again right now. I cannot get my work done under these circumstances though.
Here are some details on my hardware configuration:
I upgraded my ram to 16gb from a very reputable brand long ago when I first bought the high-resolution late 2011 15" MacBook Pro and have never had issues. I do not believe the hardware has anything to do with this issue anyways...
500GB Samsung Flash drive with about 70GB free right now. Upgraded that from the stock 500GB 5400 RPM hard drive many months ago and, again, have never had issues until I installed updates last night.
I'd greatly appreciate any insight or help on this. I am a software developer and have spent over 6 hours trying to find an answer and diagnose this issue already. I am at a complete and utter loss at this point. I've repaired permissions, cleared caches, verified fonts, rebooted multiple times after making some system changes, etc... all to no avail. I am stumped, fooled, dumbfounded, and, quite frankly, REALLY ****** off at this machine right now. Hopefully some genius can come along and save the day here.
Below is a dump of the Console's logged events from the most recent occurance. Maybe you'll be able to pickup a trail from this information. Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide to possibly help diagnose and fix this.
Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide here.

The Console logs sure do seem useless. They definitely haven't helped me track anything down for squat but, as you suspected, I have no kernal panics to pull logs from. I did notice, however, one particular app that was leaving a User Diagnostic Report / crash log at the same time each occurance happened. The reports are for SRServiceAgent, which is part of Splashtop Streamer.app. Maybe these logs might reveal something? If you think so, I can share the output as well. I've looked through them but I must say, they're near giberish to me

I'll try giving a reinstall of 10.8.4 via the combo updater a shot and see if that helps. I've been using the machine without another episode for about an hour now but that really doesn't mean anything since I have no frigin idea what's causing this and if anything I may have adjusted would have even fixed it or not. It's kinda an only time will tell thing right now.
See anything that raises any flags in the output above? The Splashtop kext is for the same app I mentioned above that left a crash log. It's an app that allows me to remote in using my iPhone or iPad but I don't believe I even had it actively running when I whitnessed the lovely disappearing act. Of course, that doesn't mean things weren't still running in the background of course.
On that note, I ought to wipe VirtualBox. I've been using VMWare instead lately and I've actually already uninstalled the VirtualBox app itself. I'll see if I can find a writeup on how to properly remove its kernel extensions... long shot in terms of a solution to my issue but hey.
Btw, is it possible to look into exactly what and when system updates were installed? I'd like to confirm whether I actually did install 10.8.4 the first night or if it already had been. At the very least, it would help me isolate some details behind what's causing this cause this certainly didn't happen before those updates I installed the first night.
Thanks again! -
Random error accessing CIFS shares from Windows
I am setting up some CIFS shares to be used from Windows clients and in the process I had some random problems accessing the shares.
In hope of finding the answer I checked the CIFS Service and the Active Directory Service, and while watching the screen for Active Directory Service I saw that the "Selected Domain Controller" changed from one to another. I now stayed within this screen and noticed that the "Selected Domain Controller" continued to change and then I found the problem, because an unknown Domain Controller appeared. The IP was 216.150.17.8
I found that when ever this Domain Controller was the selected one, all access to CIFS shares from Windows clients failed! This is correct, because the 216.150.17.8 of course is unaware of all users in Our Domain
So the Questions are:
- what is happening?
- and how to solve this?
- why is a Domain Controller 216.150.17.8 sometimes the Selected Controller?
- where does this 216.150.17.8 come from?
Have You seen anything like this?I now have found out why the DC changes - it is because the CIFS service is restarting ;-(
This is a log snip

Photos randomly out of order when published to my gallery!
Photos are in the right order in iPhoto on my mac (Library, Albums, Web), but when the album is published to my gallery the photos are completely and randomly out of order.
The name of each photo is just the number given by the camera, and iPhoto had correctly imported the folder of photos in chronological order from a hard disk.
Also, there are videos which sometimes work in the gallery, but for some it says quicktime cannot play the video, and sometimes the video is UPSIDE DOWN!
How can I get the correct order (and functioning videos)?
ThanksIn the gallery on the web, I see no pattern to the random order.
Aha! In iPhoto (back on my mac), I now see that the order from the import at the beginning ("events") is not the same as the original folder (where all files were in order of file number). I see the problem there - iPhoto imports the photos in the correct order until it encounters a video. The videos (.mov) are mostly in the wrong place, although I found one in the right place (just to make it impossible to say always, grr).
Then when the mostly in order (apart from videos out of order) "album" is published to the web gallery, photos and videos are completely out of order.
I had never tried including videos in photo albums in iPhoto, I think because in previous versions this was impossible. So I had published one video at a time to its own "album" on the gallery. Maybe iPhoto is mixed up by these videos in with photos. Strange though, because it gives details about how many photos and how many videos in the album, and seems to act like this would be possible.
So, resetting the order in iPhoto does not allow me to republish maintaining this order. In the publishing process, somehow all are randomly mixed up. The only way I can see to reorder everything in the gallery is to move them all manually there in the gallery when connected to my account at me.com
I had hoped to find a better solution, because this would take a long time to do.

'airport' process chewing up CPU on boot?
I'm having a weird problem. I've had my MacBook for about a month, but this problem has only been happening in the last few days. Before I begin, I'm 100% up to date and repaired permissions.
When I boot up my computer, the fans start going full speed and don't seem to slow down. I open up the activity monitor and sort my processor usage. At around 98%, a process called airport is chewing up the CPU. I end up having to Force Quit to make it stop and to make the computer cool off. Oddly enough the actual AirPort Express still works with this process killed.
What is this process? Why does it run near 100%? Is it okay for me to kill it? What can I do to prevent this from happening on every boot?Analysis of sampling pid 122 every 10.000000 milliseconds

OSP Recipt Transaction Doesn't Always Perform The Move/Complete Process
Random occurrences.
Have OSP Deliver transactions that move the work order quantity to the To Move operation step but doesn't complete the work order.
The work orders have completion subinventories.
They are typically not over completion transactions.
One resource and one op-item.
The resource charge type is PO Move
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't
Can't find anything specific in MetaLink.
Any thoughts
Thanks in advanceunderstood
the last operation in this instance is galvanizing.
the same osp-resource and thus osp-item is used in many different assemblies that go for this process.
it is a random occurrence when they receiving transaction is performed...the wip move takes quantity and puts it into the To Move intraoperation step...but the work order does not complete.
it can not be reproduced in a recent clone instance -
How to view Work process status from Operating System level???
Hi,
How can I check work process status from Operating System in Unix. For example : In Windows, I can see the work process status from SAP MMC in WP Table.
How can I view from Unix?
Appreciate your feedback. Thanks.Hi,
You can terminate. Please look into the menu given by DPMON carefully. You can kill the process using the k option.
Otherwise you can also kill the process kill -9 <PID of the process>.
Please do not terminate update and ENQ work process. This may lead to data loss. If the condition can not be control by killing some processes and again all the WPs are occupied. I recommend SAP system restart.
Restart will ensure that all necessary roll backs happen and no data loss.
With Regards,
Saurabh
