Product dependencies on SQL versions

We recently ran in to an issue where SharePoint 2013 needed SQL 2012 or higher to get the full feature set from SharePoint.  We're about to upgrade both SQL clusters, probably to 2014.  The question has come up whether or not we need to buy those
licenses with software assurance or not.  It's costly to buy it that way.  Typically you don't need to be on the latest version of SQL to get other products to work but with what happened with SharePoint 2013 we're not sure.
Does anyone have any insight in to whether MS will be doing things like that moving forward?  I don't want to purchase SQL 2014 without SA only to realize we needed SA in two years when SQL 2016 comes out, or whatever version does.

For environments that have SharePoint, System Center (SCOM, SCCM, VMM, 
etc), Lync, and Dynamics it certainly pays to buy SQL Server licenses with assurance. Every new version of those products tries to take advantage of new SQL Server features that arrive with each new version of SQL Server.
If keeping above Microsoft products updated is important to your organization, then Assurance will prove to be the cheapest option.
As you mentioned, SQL Server is coming with a new release very two years.

    we are preparing ourselves to move away from SAP R/3 & MS SQL 2000 to SAP ECC 6.0 and a new SQL platform.
    From what I found, it runs on SAP_BASIS 7.0 - so both SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 are supported.
    I was wondering, however, what SQL version do I need - would SAP ECC 6.0 run on Standard or does it require Enterprise Edition of SQL server?

    Hi Gavin,
    you should always use the SQL EE for SAP installations (because of additional features that only come with EE).
    Concerning SQL 9 or SQL 10, I would definitely go for SQL 10. It has some nice features like Backup Compression, Page/Row Compression and so on. Have a look [here|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/60a236a2-8104-2b10-5ebe-8fef61cc82fd]. Just make sure that your installation meets the SR3 requirements.
    We already have SQL 10 in production and did not encounter any problems.

    If you recently purchased this then it is not likely to be a valid sale/purchase.  Adobe does not sell older versions of their products and no one but Adobe provides student/teacher licensing.  If you purchased this some time years ago and it is only recently that you find you are not able to reactivate it with the original serial number you can try contacting Adobe Support thru chat and see if they will be willing to work with you to resolve this.

    It seems there is an inconsistent PPM FG100203.01 exists
    in your planning version from which you are copying.
    Check the possibilities of repairing that PPM and retry
    copying.  Orelse In the /SAPAPO/VERCOP transaction,
    under the product selection criteria, exclude that item and
    try copying the version.

    I imported this Software Component Version into Integration Builder and developed design and configuration objects.
    The scenario is completed and now I want to transport the Products and Software Component Version to XI Production.

    Thanks four your instructions. I would like to have more details on the export/import procedure. Please confirm the following steps are correct:
    From SLD of XI development:
    1/ Edit new product and its software component version.
    2/ Click on icon Export: XI generates a zip file and downloads it in c drive.
    From SLD of XI Production:
    1/ Select Import utility under system catalog.
    2/ Browse and select the zip file
    In XI production there are existing third party products, and I do not want the transport of this new product causes any problem.
    Design and configuration objects will be exported/import ed after the successful transport of product and software component version transport.

    Unfortunately there is no stop button for BPC but you can create a bat file to turn off all the services and associated COM+ objects:
    To do this create a bat file call ShutdownBPC.bat and put the following commands in it. This needs to be run on the BPC application server.
    iisreset /stop
    net stop OsoftSendGovernor
    net stop OSoftServiceManager
    taskkill /f /im dllhost.exe
    This will surely shutdown all running processes and will disallow users from getting into BPC until the you restart all those services.
    Also, you can create another bat file call StartupBPC.bat and put the following commands in it:
    iisreset /start
    net start OSoftServiceManager
    net start OsoftSendGovernor

    Why are you using CTE in SQl server 2000. They were introduced from 2005. of course you need to confirm version of SQL Server

    You cannot purchase older versions of Adobe software thru Adobe.  If you have a full subscription you can acquire the CS6 version  thru that.  I have had CS6 running on a Vista system for years without problems.

    The iTunes Store doesn't sell software for the Mac. I presume you mean the Mac App Store. To the best of my knowledge, no software sold in the Mac App Store has serial numbers nor product keys. For what reason do you think you need them?

    Hi,
    when you issue a SQL statement, the database searches the library cache to find a cursor with matching SQL text. Then it can happen that even though the text matches, there are some other differences that prevent you from using existing cursor (e.g. different optimizer settings, different NLS settings, different permissions etc.). In such cases, a new child cursor is created. So basically child cursors are different versions of the same SQL statement.
    If you have SQL statements with thousands of versions, this could mean a problem for your shared pool (child cursors taking up lots of space and causing fragmentation), as well as a potential for performance problems due to plan instability (if the same SQL text is parsed to a new plan every time, sooner or later it will be a bad plan). That's why AWR report has this list.
    According to Oracle support, up to a couple of hundreds versions doesn't indicate a problem (cursor sharing mechanism isn't perfect), but when you have thousands or tens of thousands of versions, you should check your cursor sharing settings (first of all, CURSOR_SHARING parameter).

    Currently I can develop with Developer 6i or Developer 10G on WinXP and RDBMS 9.2.
    And can deploy WebForms 6i and 10G.

  • Moving site page from Dev to production - DVWP from SQL server datasource

    I have seen a lot of resources online about something similar to my issue but nothing came to concrete help (content is old or not quite relevant) so I appreciate some help.
    situation
    - used SP designer 2013 to develop webpart site page
    - Defined datasource to SQl server database connection
    - Inserted dataview to the page based on SQL datasource
    Now I want to move the page from dev to prod. I created the datasources on prod same as DEV
    When I took the code of the pages on DEV and used on PRod , I had this error
    Web Part Error: An error has occurred. Correlation ID: 9baf979c-1607-3081-07b4-a7577a8956bd. 
    Searching showed that this is expected because the webpart config is stored in content database and some Guids are involved here. I read somewhere that I can change the guid to name for DataFormWebPart  but that keyword doesn't even exist in the
    code (must be for legacy version)
    So , how can , easily, move sitepage between sites on different servers? I do not want to redevelop things from scratch.

    According to your description, my understanding is that you want to move the site page from Dev to production.
    How did you move the page?
    If the page only contains the data view web part, then I recommend to export the web part from the page and then move the exported file to production.
    After that, add the web part in the new page in production.

    You said yourself you've installed SQL 2008.
    You need to use 2008 R2.
    You should not be deploying full SQL on your front end server, use a separate box.
    If this is non-production you can just use the local SQL express instance on the front end for testing purposes.
    I would advise reading the Lync 2013 TechNet articles for guidance on deploying Pchat.

  • SQL version could not be verified error while installing the SCOM 2012 R2 reporting component

    I have the below SCOM server roles in my SCOM 2012 R2 set up
    1) All servers with Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, MS - SCOM1, DB & DW - DB1, Reporting Server - DB2
    2) All the DB servers with SQL 2012 SP1
    3) Windows firewall is turned off on all the servers.
    4) Success fully installed all the components except SCOM reporting.
    While installing the SCOM 2012 R2 reporting component on DB2 ( Iam running this set up on the server where I instllaed the SQL DB engine and reportin services in Native mode. Configured the SQL reporting database and reporting URLs successfully in SQL reporting
    configuration manager) getting the below error in the Rporting server instance page. Kindly advise.
    I ran mofcomp.exe and there is no firewall restrictions. My account also has DB owner & sysadmin permissions.
    Also tried re installing the SQL on Reporting server.

    As far as I know, after installing SSRS, we don't need to configure the database and reporting URLs manully. When we install the reporting service for SCOM, it will configure those automatically.
    If possible, you may re-install SSRS and then install SCOM reporting service.
