Program shutdown after ~12 hours

On a PXI system running a 6071 DAQ at 50K samples/s on 16 channels, W2000 shuts the LabVIEW app off. Sometimes it shuts everything else off too, and the OS crashes. Sometimes the OS stays alive enough to ask for a reboot. Sometimes a few items remain on the screen, but mouse and keyboard are dead.

I think Lynn was correct in suspecting a memory issue.
I will venture a guess that after 12 hours you getting the trigger you are looking for.
After the trigger the history is read and formatted for file.
Now it is time to math.
After 12 hours of 50,000 samples/sec on 16 channels you have alot of data.
I wipped a quick test VI to help figure out how much memory is being used.
You are collecting 800,000 samples/second.
Formatted as text, the string length is 4G (that is for one second).
For 12 hours you need 2.1 tera bytes of memory to buffer the string!
So....
I would suggest that you truncate the data to a couple of seconds prior to the trigger event and save the data as binary.
Do post processing to convert it to text
latter.
I hope this helps,
Ben

  • 8.2 DSC : Program Crash After 24 Hours on 'Read Traces.vi'

    Hello,
I am chasing a problem in a LabVIEW 8.2 project. The project uses DSC and on a trending screen, I use the 'read traces' VI to read traces from the Citadel database to display on trends.
After about 24 hours of running, the program crashes with "Error 1025". The dialog box reads: "Error 1025 occurred at Tag \\My computer\UPP Tags\Hy-6022_Actual: Open VI Reference in CTL_hdProxyManager.vi->HIST_ReadNumericTraceCORE.vi->HIST_ReadNumericTraces.vi:2->ReadTraces(Numeric).vi:1->!Dash Reactor.vi"
Under "Possible Reason(s):" there is a lot of text, starting with "LabVIEW: Application Reference is Invalid"
I don't seem to be reading an inappropriately large amount of data (in the last occurrence of the error, there were only about 750 data points per trace displayed on the graph, representing about 1 hour of data. The program is running with no operator interaction during this time. The application is updating the graph and therefore running the "read traces" VI about once every 4 seconds. I have 175 shared variables. The PC is a very new, fast one . Let me know what other data you might need.
I attached the main VI (there are a lot of support VI's too, but at least you can see the general idea), along with BMPs of the location of the error on the block digram and the error dialog box.

    Hi Michael,
This was reported to R&D (# 4258E9IQ) and was fixed in LabVIEW 8.2.1. Upgrading to that version should fix the problem you are facing.

  • How to find out why my MBP will always try to shut down after 1 hour

    Dear all,
this is a question too complicated for me to answer; I have previously tried to solve this problem in a usenet forum (comp.sys.mac.system) - but we didn't get it solved there, and I finally gave up on it. However, it still persists, and it is so annoying that I want to try another approach on it this time using the Apple Discussions Forum.
The problem is as follows: my relatively new (bought in december '09) MacBook Pro 13" (2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM) has a problem: always when I leave it untouched for one hour, something within the system would try to make the computer shut down (system halt). Please note right that this seems NOT to be a hardware-related issue (al least not simply a bad mother-board or sth. similar - there are a lot of threads about MacBooks that seem to shut down immediately, like fainting - this is not the case here). Instead, the system behaves like anytime when a user-requested shut down is invoked - for example, the running applications would check if any changes should be saved, and ask questions. The only thing is: I did not request a system shut down, and even more: I do not WANT the system to shut down. In fact, this whole problem is extremely annoying, since it constantly messes up my open documents (e.g. the TextMate workspace I usually set up, or similar things), forcing me to reestablish my workspace at least once a day. Over time, this can be very annoying for a computer that's used for work!!
During the course of my earlier discussions in the forum, we tried to find out what makes the computer go down - looking through the system log files etc. - but to no avail: we couldn't trace back the event that has caused the system to invoke the shut down procedure. However, it seems that this issue is related to the Mac operating system, and not the hardware - and this is why I ask this question here (and not in the MacBook Pro section). It may be that we simply didn't look in the right place - or not with the right tools - and I hope that there may be some people here with some new ideas how to trace the reason for this procedure. Everything I can tell now with some certainty (and I couldn't do it before in the usenet forum) is that the shutdown seems to be invoked about one hour after the system has been left untouched by a user (no key strokes, no mouse movements); I know this because I use my Mac for a wake up call now - and, since I sometimes need more than an hour for that, I can tell that this problem causes iTunes to quit one hour after the Mac has booted (which makes my wake-up music to switch off... and some of the running applications with no changes to save).
It would be very important for me to solve and remove this annoying problem, and I think that this really shouldn't happen! Needless to say, I haven't set the energy savings settings such that the system would shut down after one hour (in fact, I have set the system to always stay on when attached to a power supply); still, the problem prevails.
Does anyone of You specialists have a good clue or smart suggestion where (or probably how) else to look to find out what causes the shutdown? Thanks a lot for taking the time and considering this annoying problem!
    Best,
    Björn

Yes - it is a bit frightening... Had other Macs before this MacBook (Pro), and never experienced such a problem. Don't know - of course I look into the Preference settings from time to time, and maybe I have changed that setting on the other computers... it never occurred to me...
What an annoyance such a simple decision to make the auto-shutdown after one hour a default can be! Probably, Apple reconsiders :-D I'd rather prefer an auto-lock of the account (instead of an auto-log off)... but I believe it has been expressed often enough that, in this particular case, the - pardon me - Windows-solution (to offer a simple lock of the account, the Windows-L-key combination, IIRC) is much more practical... to copy that behaviour under Mac OS X, You'd have to go through lengths...
Anyway! Pondind, thank You very much!!! Solved a kind of embarassing, but huge problem of mine!
    Best,
    Björn

  • Hyper - v shutting down after an hour.

I am running Windows 8 and 8.1 on separate machines and both of them are using hyper v to run 7. Both of them shutdown after an hour of use. Both are single use instances. I have done some looking and already went in and changed the power options and sleep

  • Lenovo Flex 10 touchscreen stops working after 1 hour of use.

Just bought a new Lenovo Flex 10 from a retail and it works perfectly except that after an hour of use the touchscreen stops working, the computer still works ok, but only with the mousepad. The notebook came with Windows 8.1, and I haven't installed any program on it. I need an urgent response please, since i've been looking for days in the community and other support pages, and still can't get a satisfactory answer and the period to get the a refund are about to expire.
    Thanks in advance.

    hi riglesias,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Once the Touchscreen stops responding, can you check the following:
    1. Open System Properties and see if the Touch functionality is still there
      - Link to picture (Touchscreen feature is not detected)
      - Link to picture (Touchscreen feature is detected)
If the Touchscreen feature is detected, proceed to Step 2.
    2. Press the Windows key‌ +R, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter. On the Device Manager, navigate to the Human Interface Devices section and uninstall anything that says HID-compliant device (this is the driver that controls the touchscreen). When finished, reboot the system and observe.
    3. If the Touchscreen is still not working, hold the Shift Key and hit the restart button inside Windows and you should be able to see the image below then try to tap on the screen to test and observe. I
If the touch capability is still not functioning, I recommend you contact lenovo for service.

  • System unstable and requires reboot after 24 hours - HELP

I did a clean install of Leopard twice and the same issue appears. The system becomes unstable and requires a reboot. Mail doesn't function correctly and Firefox gives an error, "Another copy of Firefox is running. Only one copy can run at a time'.
The only option at this point is to reboot, however the system hangs on shutdown.

Sorry for the delay and thanks for the response. what I mean by unstable is that the system will not perform as expected. The problem seems to be growing however. It use to only occur after 24 hours of up time. Now it seems to occur after the system goes to sleep. Twice I have put the system to sleep and each time when it wakes, I can not do anything. If I click an application Firefox, Yahoo, iChat, Mail, etc it will not respond. Forcing a quit on the application does nothing. Each time I have been forced to bring the system down hard. -Any help is appreciated.

  • FF4 starts using all of available CPU after several hours, needs reboot.

This used to happen in the previous release version of FF, and it's apparently still the case in FF4.
Everything works fine after I start FF4. I have 50+ tabs open and visible through TabMixPlus and FF is fast and snappy just like I want it to be, but after several hours (most often when I come back to the PC in the morning) it starts hogging too much CPU. I don't care so much for memory, I have plenty of that to spare, but once it maxes out a core once per second, FF completely slows down about that often and becomes completely unusable. I have to reboot it every time to fix that.

Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
    Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
    Expand Custom Views
    Click Administrative Events
    Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to skydrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post
If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem.  The
work around is to edit the registry.  If you are not comfortable doing this DONT.  If you are, backup the key before you do

  • PCI-6601 - Group Config error -10444 after 9 hours running

We developed a vi in order to acquire from the unique dma channel of the PCI-6601 counter 4 multiplexed inputs for a period measurement. We use the national VI buffered_measured_period_TIO. Each cycle the VI is supplied with one of the 4 input line.
Everything works fine until the 32211 second of measurement (about 9 hours) and after we receive the -10444 error on the group config block and the card freezes (not the software). We need to switch off and on again the PC to start again.
The cycle of measurement is exactly the one from the original Ni Vi and each cycle the reset is performed.
Looking in the database we found a similar problem after a long running (10hours) and a PCI-6602.
    We suppose that after s
everal initialization some internal counter goes in overflow (maybe the TAskID counter?).
Does exist any explanation and workouround to solve this?
Is it possible initialize the card only one time for the 4 channel and how?
    Regards
    Andrea Pede

    Hi Andrea,
What is probably happening is that your memory is becoming increasingly fragmented and after 9 hours there are no continuous blocks of memory available. If you are continuously reconfiguring your counters, that is what is morelikely causing the problem. I included an example that uses all 8 counters and only needs to configure them once. A couple other suggestions:
    1) What happens when you create a larger buffer? Can you run the program for longer?
    2) Have you tried running a disk defrag program on your memory? One suggestion I found on the net was mem-turbo from a shareware site.
    3) What happens if you only use 1 counter? Does the error still occur?
    4) Some issues (including error 10444) with the NI-DAQ driver and analog input were solved
by upgrading to NI-DAQ 6.9.3. What is your current computer configuration (software, hardware, driver version etc.)? This might help narrow the problem down.

  • TDMS file error occurs after several hours

I have a compiled LabVIEW 2010 SP1 executable running on a Windows 7 PXI computer that is occasionally producing the following error message:
"LabVIEW: LabVIEW could not load the TDMS file component.
The top-level VI <my VI's name> was stopped at unknown on the block diagram of  <my VI's name>"
This program is interfacing with equipment under test over a number of PXI cards and ethernet connections. It alters inputs to the system based on script commands, while receiving and displaying outputs. During testing, state changes are sent to a TDMS file. The system can run for hours but will usually produce the above error message... eventually.
The error seems to indicate that a LabVIEW file is missing, but the TDMS files are being created, so I may not be understanding the meaning of the error. Does anyone know what the actual cause(s) of this error message are?

The code writes to the TDMS file using the "TDMS Write" VI from the TDM Streaming Palette. These write VIs are located in 12 different sub VIs in a program loop within my main VI. Every 50ms they execute, service the I/O,  and write to the TDMS file if data in the particular sub VI has changed state. Some are writing floating point numbers, most are writing strings. There are about 750 total channels being written. I know that posting the code would be more usefull than describing it, but I think posting the source code would be frowned upon by my company. There are over a hundred custom VIs and external hardware connections that are required to effectively run this code anyway.
Regarding timing, there doesn't seem to be a particular amount of time that has to pass before this issue occurs. I was given a screenshot that shows the error occured after 11 hours of running. I was also told that the same error had occured about 6+ hours into a test once. I can say that this error doesn't seem to occur quickly, as in within the first hour or so. It seems to require long duration tests.

  • Safari freezes after several hours of use on Macbook pro

I just bought a Macbook Pro.  When using safari, it freezes at least once a day to a point I can't force quit, and had to do a hard shut down.  I've figured out that if I am using my computer and safari for more than a couple of hours, Safari just freezes.  An apple support representative did mention that laptops were not meant to be constantly on, so I have been shutting it down when not in use.  Still, I shouldn't have to shut down after an hour just to keep Safari from freezing.
Does this sound normal?  Is there an easy fix?  Do I need to look at getting this computer replaced?  Or should I download a better web browser?
I'm also new to Mac, and thought switching from a windows would mean better reliability.  So far I have been unimpressed with my computer.  I just want it to work without worrying about having to force it to shut down once a day.  Thanks for your help!

    Does this sound normal?
    No, of course not.
    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • My application hangs after 10 hours in the serialport read sub-vi. Why?

My application is programmed under LabView 5.1.1 on a windows 2000 platform.
    I use a MOXA RS232 extending module with a B&B RS485- converter.
After 10 hours trouble-free working, the application, using semaphores, hangs in the serialport read sub-vi.
In the same constelation without RS485-converter, once the application hanged up in the serialport write sub-vi. After Restarting LabView I was still not able to access the serial port. So I had to restart the PC.

I am not sure, but it looks for me as some buffer overflow error.
Like you read or write something before it is ready.
Try to play with the lines like DTR and so on.
    regards
    PP
