Progressive clips, but which preset?

Hi,
I've shot video (avchd) in 30p mode. Now, I wondering which preset I should choose to edit with. Should I select 1920x1080i60 mode? My camera is 1080 resolution, but the only "p" setting in the presets is for 720p. Which should I use?
Thanks very much,
Vic
P.S. I'm using Final Cut Express and, as I mentioned, there is no preset for editing 1080p. My camera is a Canon HF10, and is set to shoot in PF30 mode.

Yes, that was a mistake. I didn't realize until after I had the first one posted that I should've posted on the FCE forum. So, then I posted it the second time to the proper forum. Sorry about that.

  • How can you tell which clips have which presets?

I have dozens of presets in my library for various types of clips so aside from tagging everything, is there a place that displays which preset color correction I am using on a clip? If not is there another way to see what it is besides tagging?

Thanks, that helped with my other question too.

  • JVC GZ-HD7 works great, but which preset is best in Premiere?

As you know, the HD-7 is not an AVCHD nor HDV camera, it encodes to a MPEG-2 1080i 60i VBR format and then labels them as .TOD files. I have it set to the full 1920 FHD setting in the camera and have gotten it to work in premiere no problem by renaming the files to .mpg or .m2ts.
Now, I need to know exactly what preset I should be using in premiere to best suit the format the HD-7 is in encoding in.
I can choose from the usual:
    DVCPROHD
    HDV
    MainConcept MPEG Pro HD 4
    XDCAM HD
But what would be the best preset?
    *Also*
What is the best way to export video for this type? I miss the days of DV exporting with cs3 and how quickly it would export (which no longer works with cs4)
So i'm looking for two answers really, the quickest way to export the HD footage (with the least impact in visual quality) and also the best quality way to export the HD footage for serious projects.

Have you dragged your video to the NEW ITEM button and let CS5 create the correct sequence for you ?
You can then just copy that and make your own preset.

  • Best way to work with interlaced and progressive clips in the same timeline

I´m shooting with Sony MC-50E camera in 1920x1080, 50i. When importing with Log & Transfer I can work with ProRes 422 files in interlaced mode. I have to mix the footage with video screencapture which is progressive (ProRes 422). The final videos are for web only so it should end up as progressive H264 videos. I´m getting good result if exporting to H264, 1024x576 with deinterlacing enabled, but exporting to full HD gives typical interlaced lines in the picture. How can I avoid this and what is the best solution for working with both interlaced and progressive clips?

Deinterlace in Compressor using Frame Controls, Best settings. You can reconnect the deinterlaced files to your project, if you've already edited, but you may need to copy and paste the clips in your sequence to a new 25p timeline, then Remove Attributes, Basic Motion.
When you're ready to export your sequence, use Quicktime Movie, Current Settings, Self-contained. Take that file to Compressor to transcode back to h.264.
The Apple T.V. preset is very good.

  • Changing sequence settings to match clip settings-which settings are right?

I'm using a Canon HF10 camcorder and FCS 2 with a 24" iMac Intel Duo core.
When I bring in a video clip shot on my Canon HF10 (I shoot in its highest-quality mode: FXP and I do not use the 24 fps setting), I take FCP 6's recommendation to set the Sequence Settings to match the clip settings. If I then go to Sequence> Settings, I see that my Sequence Settings are 1920 x 1080 HDTV 1080i (16:9).
If you look at the Canon web page for my camera: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=269&mo delid=16186 , it shows that the camera is "Full HD" and "30p Progressive." So, why is FCP defaulting the Sequence Settings to 1080i? Is this default setting what I should be using?
Also, and perhaps more importantly, if I go into Motion 3 to create things to add to FCP projects that use the footage from my HF10, what settings should I choose in Motion 3's Select Project Preset window?
    Thanks!

    Hey guys,
I found the same problem occurred with my own "weird codec". I'm on FCP 6.0.6 and I was doing some simple testing work with Photobooth's video feature, which records in MPEG-4 640x480 .mov. I tried getting my sequence to auto-conform with both 'ASK' and 'Always' settings, but no dice.
I didn't find a solution, mostly because it was easier to simply batch export them all as DV Pal clips, but I thought you might be interested. I posit the auto conform only works with more conventional video codecs like those listed in the Easy Setup options - of which, MPEG-4 is not.

  • Which Preset for HD?

I'm editing a photo montage. I videotaped 100 photos with my SONY Z5U Camcorder in 1080i (progressive mode). I then used Premiere to export the timeline to 100 stills (bmps) which are all 1920x1080. Which preset do I use to edit the montage?
    AVC-Intra-1080p-AVC-I 100 1080p30 (1920x1080) square pixels
    AVC-Intra-1080p-AVC-I 50   1080p30 (1440x1080) HD Anamophic 1080
    or something else?

I use Canopus Imaginate but there are other Photo Montage software's available.
Another I have used is muvee Reveal/autoProducer.
Photographers are not Videographers and have a plethora of tools geared towards them making Photo Montages fairly effortlessly.
If you do a WWW search and check out a few, I bet you'll find one that's pretty simple to use.
They usually have different themes or vibes and you just select your photos and hit GO.
View and Adjust your output to your taste.
iPhoto has it built in so I'm sure other Photo Management softwares also have this feature.
The thing is to find the one that has all the options you need with a not so steep learning curve.
Encore DVD has the ability to do Photo Slideshows too, ya know.

I'm not sure if it is what you need... but it's a start; with the tools you already have.

Let us start from the beginning.
It has been established that you have Premiere Elements 10. On what computer operating system is it running?
There has not been a File Menu/Export/Movie export opportunitity in Premiere Elements since version 7. We are not up to version 12.
For Premiere Elements 10, your export opportunities are all in Share/ including one for Computer. Under Computer there are several choices. The ones that you see are Adobe Flash Video, MPEG, and AVCHD. The others you have to scroll down to. And those choices are AVI, Windows Media, QuickTime, Image, and Audio. You do not have to use the scroll bar for this. You can click on Adobe Flash Video panel to get it to turn black. Then use the down arrow to go down the list and the up arrow to go up the list. Once you get to a category, you can select a preset and go with it or customize it under the Advanced Button/Video Tab and Audio Tab of the preset.
If you post the properties of your source media that you want to try to match in the export, I would be glad to suggest the exact settings for you.
We will be watching for your follow up with details.
    Thank you.

Add On...The Premiere Elements 10 File Menu is for more than Saving, just not exporting. One of the key features that can be access there is the Project Archiver. More on that another time.

Actually you need to quit Safari which is different from closing.  With Safari open go the menu bar for Safari/Quit Safari.

there are two ways applying music to an iM project
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3b0f955f
as 'Background' which offers lots of automatisms, but lil' control
    or…

as 'clip' - which can be handled asany other clip, edited, shortened, copy/paste, faded, located, etc

  • Screen Recording Video - Which Preset do I use?

Hi. I am using a free screen recording software...I've tried both CamStudio and Debut...and I was wondering which Preset I should use when I create a new project? I'm thinking Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorder but I don't know for sure...
I am having trouble getting the video to export sharp and clear. The videos are good quality when I record but something seems to be happening to the files when I import them into Premiere and add my animations. When I export back out as .flv (to add to website) they are extremely low quality.
I'm wondering if this has to do with the preset from the very beginning. I've worked on videos within Premiere before but they were using actual footage from the video camera...not using Screen Recording devices.
I've tried exporting the files as .AVI, .MOV, .MPG, etc. and still get the same low-quality export.
    Thank you.

    Leslie,
I cannot tell you the Preset directly, but think that you might find some useful information in the links in this ARTICLE.

  • I can't add transitions between clips, but between generated media?!

I can't add transitions between clips, but between generated media?! Any ideas?

I am assumming you are working with "connected clips" which are either above or below the main storyline "track" (the one you put your first project clip onto when you started the project). You can only add transitions to clips that are on either the primary storyline or on a created storyline.  Select the clips you are working with then choose the Clip menu and the Create Storyline selection. Make sure snap is set to assure your clips are really butted up against each other.  Then apply the transitions.

  • Which presets for HD material?

I have some HD material (1280x720/ 30fps) but I can't figure out which presets to use in CS4. I tried some, like "HDV 1080p30". But in all of them the sound works but the image only shows the first frame.
I don't think it's a hardware problem bacause it works fine in WMP.
Hope someone can tell what I'm doing wrong!

    Dear Jeff,
Thank you for your helpful answer. I watched your toolkit video and followed all the steps. However, when trying to open my .avi video file in VirtualDub, I get the following message:
Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'H264' (unknown).
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.
    What to do....?

  • How can I smooth progressive clips ?

It happened that my camcorder shot some clips as progressive video instead of interlaced video (in Auto mode and low light conditions it makes decisions on the fly to reduce exposure time to 1/25 instead of 1/50, as usually in PAL).
As a result in some clips progressive and interlaced video appear "randomly", actually depending on the light conditions. In the future I'll be careful to force my camcorder to always use interlaced. It's new and I'm still learning all its features...
But for videos already shot this is my question:
is there a filter to smooth the pan movement for progressive clips ?
I tried Motion Blur, Anti-alias, Flicker, but none of them solved my issue.
    Thanks
    Piero

    Al,
it is not totally clear to me either.
What I found is that, while panning to a lower light area of the room, the movement suddenly lost smoothness (I can see this only on interlaced TV).
Then, I checked the clips in the canvas frame by frame with 100% zoom (where you can see both fields together in each frame): where the panning is smooth I can see the comb effect due to the 2 different fields, and where the stattering starts the comb effect disappears.
This leads me to think that where the scene is darker automatically the camera records the same field twice in each frame, to have more time to read it...
I also checked in the camera manual and I found a menu command (unfortunately NOT set by default...) that may prevent this by forcing a minimum shutter speed of 1/50: otherwise it might also to go down to 1/12 in very low light conditions.
After setting this option, I shot some test clips and in fact the stuttering disappeared even in low light (and the resulting clip was slightly darker).
Trying to answer your question: is it actually jumping to progessive in auto mode?, I don't know for sure (progressive and interlaced are not even mentioned in its manual,...), but all evidence leads me to think that this is the case.
But it is also true that when the speed is lower than 1/50 many details are lost and everything is kind of blurred. Still I wouldn't call it fluidity since the result is in fact a stuttering blurred image... that is terrible!
That's why I'm looking for a fix on the already shot video.
    Thanks Al for your help

  • Editing a 2560x1440 source - which preset do I choose?

    Hi all:
I am confused as to which preset I should be choosing in order to edit 2560x1440 video. I've seen lots of questions asking about exporting @ 1440p, but nothing has tipped me off on how to edit it in the first place without PP cropping it. If I choose an AVCHD 1080p profile, I can't edit its resolution. I've spent so much time in the editor trying to fix it, but I give up and hope someone has an answer for me.
In case it matters, I'm using CS 5.5.
    Thanks a ton!
    Rob

Thanks a ton. I blanked on the idea of creating a preset; I had thought that tab was to configure the preset that I chose.
2560x1440 is a common resolution for monitors 27" and larger, and since it uses the same ratio as 1080p, it still looks great even if people have to downscale. YouTube offers 1440p support on videos, like seen here:
