Progressive failure, now macbook wont start

Greetings from an American Soldier in Iraq,
I need your advice. Yesterday, I had a movie playing through iDVD. I stopped the movie and pressed the eject button. The spinning ball of death appeared and the machine locked up. Force quit did not work, waiting 15 minutes did nothing. So I pressed and held the power button until it shut off.
The normal startup sound played, then the silver apple logo and spinner came up as expect, but it did nothing else. It stayed like that for over 20 minutes. So I pressed the power again and then brought it up in single user mode.
Errors from fsck were listed and it appeared to be doing nothing- frozen. In hind sight, maybe I should have been more patient, waiting longer than 20 mnutes. Perhaps it was trying to fix the disk. So I turned it off again and decided to try comand - option - P - R. The PRAM reset function as expected, but the OS did not come up.
I decided to boot to the OS X DVD 1. I ran the disk utility. The first time I ran it, I got stuck trying to find Volumes and it never stopped its search. It spun looking for something for about 10 minutes. I cycled the power again and rebooted back to the DVD. This time, and every time since, it searches for about 5 seconds, finds the DVD volume, but never finds the internal hard drive.
I have reset the power management system. no effect.
Now, when I try to reset PRAM, I have to hold the keys for about 1.5 minutes before the computer restarts, but there is no change.
command - option- O - F seems to do nothing on my macbook. is that normal.
when power first comes on, i hear a faint clicking noise that lasts about 20 seconds from the hard drive area of the laptop.
if I do nothing, eventually, the blinking ? folder appears.
I can not reinstal the OS because the internal hard drive is not recognized / seen.
If I reset power and hold option, nothing happens unless the DVD is in the drive, then I can select that volume.
If I press X on power up, nothing happens- eventually go to the blinking folder.
I read the tech article on the ? blinking folder and performed all those steps numerous times.
Question: did I do anything that can be undone so I can get the laptop to recognize the internal hard drive so I can run first aid or reinstall the OS?
WHatever tips / tricks / helps you can provide, I would like to hear. I am experienced with UNIX, so dont hold back- I really need your help.
AIRBORNE!
Dan

Dan, Sorry to hear about your problems. I'm afraid it sounds like your hard drive died. Once a drive starts making audible sounds, the clicking you mentioned, it's usually toast. Maybe your book is still under warranty? Fortunately they're easy to replace. Hopefully you can get one shipped to you over there. I don't think any amount of software or repair tips are going to help.
Thanks for your service. We're very proud of everything you guys do for us.
Good luck and stay safe.

  • Installed Optibay now Macbook wont start without the charger...

    Hey Guys,
Yesterday I installed an SSD along with an optibay drive in my Late 2011 macbook. I have installed my own hard drive before and the process of installing the Optibay was fairly similiar and simple.
After everything was installed I noticed my macbook does not start when the charger cable is plugged out. I have reset the SMC (Did not get any feedback from the laptop, so im not sure if anything is happening.) as well as disconnected the battery for a few seconds, still nothing. Without the charger the laptop is now dead.
If I go to system support I, my laptop has had 256 cycles and the battery status is Normal.
When I boot up with the charger plugged in, I can see that the laptop is charging and the percentages are going up.
What do you guys reccomend I do? I need the latop so it would be great if we can find a solution where I dont have to send it in for a few weeks to get repaired.
    Kind Regards,
    Herco van Dyk.

    Hi LowLuster,
I pressed the battery indicator. When the laptop is on charge, it runs to the appropiate light. When it is not on charge, none of the lights light up. The laptop behaves like there is no battery inserted.
I also checked the battery cable and it was snug. I plugged it out and back in just for peace of mind but the problem persists.
I sent in the latop for repairs a short while after my initial message. So let's hope they can get it sorted by the weekend. (Their claimed repair time.)

  • Satellite U400-14B shuts itself off and now it wont start up

    Hi
just got a new Satellite U400 this week.
Was working perfectly the first few days, then last night, it just shuts itself off and now it wont start up.
I press the on button and the row of lights next to it light up, but nothing happens I dont even get as far as the Toshiba screen.
I have tried many things. I left it plugged in overnight, tried taking the battery out and no result as of now.
The little led lights on the bottom indicate that there its plugged in, the battery is white not orange, when pressed they all light up again only for a split second.
The only thing I can liken this too is when a car wont start and you keep turning and turning the key, well in this case pushing a button, and nothing happens, the fans dont whir or anything...
    help please...

Has extra Memory (RAM) been installed? Try removing one Memory Module and try a different Memory Slot.
If bad memory is not the problem, then there is not much else you can do except send it to an ASP for warranty repairs.

  • My macbook wont start. it just comes to a black screen that sais no bootable device.  -asian gal

My macbook wont start. it just comes to a black screen that sais no bootable device.

Ok then either the drive has failed or the cable from the drive to the logic board has failed or the drive is so corrupted that the computer doesn't see the OS on it.
Boot the computer from the original install DVD that came with your system. If your system is new and came with Lion then at startup hold down the Command+r keys and that will either boot you to the built in Recovery HD or to the internet recovery system. From either of those you can check the drive for error and or see if the computer even knows there is a drive in the system.

Not saying you have to reinstall...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

There indeed may be something wrong with it, but we're just other users here... have you tried Apple Hardware Test? (Holding the d key down while booting from the Install Disc).

  • Macbook wont start and makes ticking noise

The subject line says it all. My macbook wont start and it makes clicking noises from inside the case, kind of like a watch. The display turns on and the chime goes when it starts, but the screen stays white and nothing happens.

You can run diagnostics from the OSX disc. Insert disc one and while it is booting hold down the d key. This should take you into diagnostics.
You might also try to reset PRAM AND PMU first.

  • Help - my MacBook wont start?

The led is on but the machine wont start up?
I have tryed to hold the powerbutton down and violet close, but when I try to start up, the same problem appears :-(

I think you'll need to tell us a bit more: MacBook model, and what exactly happens.
For example, you're posting here under "MacBook Air" but refer to an LED... which the MBA doesn't have.
After holding down the Power button for a while (which shuts down the Mac no matter what), is that LED still on?
When you attempt to start it, can you hear the start-up gong?
Does the screen remain dark, or do you get to see at least a grey screen? If so, how far does it go before it stalls?

  • My MacBook wont start: Asking me to insert booth disc

I was trying to set up my mac to back up to a new Seagate External Hard Disk and during the process, i was asked to restart the macbook. When i tried to restart, i then got a black screen: asking that i insert a booth disc? I am so lost and it wont start. I also had not even backed it up. I am scared of losing my data. Can anyone help

Hi Guys Forgive my lack of details....this is actually my first time on this forum and i am not that much of a computer guru. My system is a Mac Book Pro, bought it in 2009 and was running on OS X.
The seagate external hard disc is a 1TB "Free Agent GoFlex". It comes with it's soft ware that installs when connected for the first time. So when i connected it, it installed and then gave me the option of restarting the Mac right away or later on. So i chose to restart right away......One thing i remember is that i did not disconnect it from the Mac while restarting. So this message then comes up on a black screen "No bootable device.....insert boot disc and press any key". I was at a loss as to what to do....so i came online and posted the earlier message.
I have disconnected the Hard disc, but still the same message comes up each time i attempt to start it.
I would really appreciate any info that could help me resolve what ever the problem is.
    Thanks

  • Macbook wont start -- have to reset SMC and PRAM

    Hi,
Sometimes, when I try to switch on the laptop, it wont start.. Nothing happens.
After reseting the PRAM and SMC, it comes up. But the issue is for the last 3days, I have to do this everytime.
Can you help me out on this one? Sometimes, I had to wait for like 5-7 minutes and then I have to switch on the laptop after reseting.
I dont know, whether it is affecting my laptop h/w.
I bought this 5months ago. its Macbook Air Mid 2013 model.

    Hello there, tcpipv6.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up a good number of steps to try for troubleshooting issues with your MacBook not turning on:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

  • White Unibody Macbook wont start...

    Hey there.
So before ppl tell me to do more rearch or try resetting the smc or pram or whatever else they normally say to do... I've already tried all of it...
been looking for the past 6 months and posting here is my last option...
    My MacBook just wont start.
I hit the power button.. the little indicator light on the front comes on. The fun runs at a high speed and theb I hear the hardware disc and the fun just shot off.
That's it.. nothing on the screen..
and it'll do this over and over and over again..
Sometimes after 10 minutes it'll start..
Other times more than 2 days and nothing..
    It just wont turn on...
Its been 2 days and no results.
I can't put my MacBook to sleep or close the lid because THIS is what happens to it..
I can't even shut it down or restart it because this happens to it...
I'm at the end of my rope..
All my university crap is on here..
thankfully I atleast backed up my notes online..
but without this computer I'm screwed...
    Help?

If you have already tried the steps you say you have above and the issue is still present, you have a hardware issue. Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.
    Best of luck.
