Project ideas (university)

Hi,
Soon (October) I will begin my final of university but before then I need to decide a final year project. Rather than selecting from one of the predefined options I was thinking of coming up with an idea better suited. By this I mean that I've spent two years of university predominantly focusing on Java and come October I'll have spent 14 months on an industrial placement working with Oracle DB; I thought it would be nice to incorporate the two somehow.
I've had a mess around and have managed to access & return data from a database so I know it's feasible for me.
Anyone have any good ideas incorporating them? Some I've thought of:
1. A program using Google Maps and containing food data on a town (chinese/pizza/fast food) such as geocoordinates (for google map), location, phone numbers etc.
2. Amazon without the ability to buy (just make sure a product is in stock before going to the store) -- or with the ability to buy if such a thing is doable without buying some license/expensive software.
3. Database for storing PDF documents which could then be used by a second year application I worked on for PhotoReading ( [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0CNgz59h_4] ).
Anyone have any better ideas/doesn't like my ideas? Thanks for any feedback.

We planned on being able to dynamically install new minigames from within the product from a server. We planned, we planned, we planned...
We probably only completed about 15% of the features we planned on doing. We drastically overreached. But we knew we were overreaching, and so planned our features accordingly. Our very first thing was a feasibility experiment to see if it was feasible to do the real-time sound analysis we wanted to do. Without that, there was no project. Then, we created a simple game that simply showed you what note you were playing. That gave us a basis for architecting the system. Then, we concentrated on creating a feature game that was actually fun (think Guitar Hero-esque). Then, we worked on polishing things up.
The result still wowed the socks off of most people that saw it. Know how to identify your critical success factors.

Hello, I am editing my final project at university on Premier Pro CC on mac, but when I try to load my project in Premier Pro CC for windows on my home pc i get "codec missing or unavailable". Something to do with Apples' ProRes 422 LT codec. Is there a way round this problem?

I just went to the Miraizon site, who has been the sole licensee of ProRes for PC, to see if their $150/license download was still at that price.
This is what I found ...
They only sell a few of their other products, and the ProRes/DNxHD codec package only generates an email form to "support".
I'm afraid you'll have to transcode those files to something like DNxHD or an avi codec or something to work them via PC. And I'd thought about purchasing that codec pack from them but kept putting it off. Now, I wish I'd bought it. Ah well.

Open a bunch of .au files and tracks (project for university)

Hello guys,
at first, forgive my total noobishnes but I have no idea who to ask. So, we have a project to create a short audio book (~20min) over at my university. A guy recorded the 4 tracks at our "media lab" with Final Cut Pro and exported them to a network hard drive. Once I looked at them I was very confused how to open all those files. I know how to handle easy .wav files and that's pretty much what I expected but now I have all those raw files (I guess?) and have no clue how to import them into Adobe Audition with the 4 tracks so I can edit them properly because all the .au files are just 5 seconds long.
I guess there is an easy solution because the guy asked me specificially with which software we will cut (so I hope he's not the problem but me) and since the university has licenses for adobe audition the answer was pretty simple.

EDIT: Alright, thank you all. I talked to another guy there and he exported the tracks in .wav files. He said to me that he didn't have a clue why his colleague did this stuff but now I can edit. Thank you!
Windows won't show the file size in detail so i hovered over them and made some screenshots. Every .au file is just 1 mb and 5 seconds long and you can see the rest in the screenshots. I am not 100% certain if it was FCP but it was definitely a Mac and a Mac program, so I just assumed it was Fcp.

The big problem is, I can open the au files that is not the issue but they are a total mess. They have the complete wrong order and I have no clue how to put them in the right one (and I can't move ~400 shorts files in the right place). Is there any trick? To my knowledge the software only knows how to put all those files in the right order if you have a session file or .aup (like in audacity). But if there is a trick that would be the solution to my problem.

Graduation project: ideas for a web application

I apologize for posting this topic in here but I just need ideas from more experienced developers, we are a group of 5 students in computer science department and we are required to make a graduation project for a 1 year perioed, we have an average experience in J2EE, JSP, struts and JSF and J2SE and we are required to make the project as a web application but we just couldn't find any new or interesting ideas all the web application are either blogs, emai/webmai, Content Management systems, Customer relationship management, ... but we are looking for a new ideas, we've been googling for more than a month now and we've already checked alot of posts in this forum for ideas. we just want to know what services people need from the internet that could be made as a web application. Thank you very much

Rather than looking for a cool "theme" can you give some ideas of what you need to showcase in this application?
Is it just a basic web application - ie slap a few data entry screens together into a screenflow, and do some calculations at the end
Do you need to demonstrate knowledge of the technologies you mentioned (J2EE, JSP, struts, JSF...)
Do you need to push the limits of the web interface?
Do you need to "break new ground"
Ajax is a useful thing to investigate and push the boundaries with.
Or take a web application and make it multi platform - ie access it with a browser, via a mobile phone - see what you need to do to accomplish that.
The only other idea would be to do some sort of game/simulation.
Multi user obviously.
eg a stockmarket sim, where you can log on to buy/sell shares. You also hook up your app to some XML feeds where it picks up the daily changes so you don't have to enter them manually.
Will demonstrate both user interface, and back end functionality.

EJB project IDE build dos not include properties files

We have property files also which we want included as part of the build process
for EJB projects but if we use the IDE build it does not include them. We have
to therefore export the IDE build and customize it to include *.properties like
this

which causes a problem for us because the exported build file is specific to a

Hey Jamie,
Currently there is no support to include other .properties files into
the internal build. There's a build.properties that you get as part of
an EJB project which you could place your values into and use that as
your template for your team based development and check that into your
source control.
If you'd really like to get gross and hack Workshop a little bit you
could modify the default EJB project template to use your .properties
file for every EJB project you create. This would then splat a copy of
your .properties file into the root of the EJB project.
To do that you'd go to {your BEAHOME}\workshop\templates and crack open
the ejb-project.zip template zip file and merge your settings into the
existing build.properties file. This has the same
effect as replacing the .properties file after you've created your
project only it keeps you from having to perform that step each time.
The downside of this is that each person on your team would then have to
update that template zip file in their workshop installation. (I'd make
sure to backup the original template file before performing this
activity so you can always go back to the original template).

Java Project Ideas

This post might be a little off topic but last week I had posted about some places where I could get some free Java packages that I can include in my project. I checked out some websites as suggested, but I could not develop upon a good idea for a project.
Could someone throw in some ideas about a project that he or she has worked with or something that you would like to see developed. Here is what is required:
A Java GUI program is to be created which has a both a significant, interesting interface part and a significant, interesting computational infrastructure behind the interface. It should not focus too much on either GUI or the computation part, a balance must be sought. Other packages can be used in the project (Eg: A voice recognition package can be used and the GUI can be built; although that�s not quite what I�m intending to do here). It should be workable in 4 weeks of time.
If someone could just throw in some ideas about any project that they would like to see made, it would be just great!

I once tried making like a database profiler, called it dProfiler. I gave up because I found something very simillar to it on the net, nevertheless it was worth doing as I learnt some new GUI things.
Basically it's a program which when given a database URI, inspects the database and returns its results in the form of a JTree. This JTree contains database names as root nodes and table names as leaf nodes of their respective database. The leaf nodes (table name nodes) could then be expanded to include column names and types (eg primary/foreign key).
Also when a database/database table is dragged from teh JTree onto a display area, the program generates a JTable representing the database/database table. This way tables can be visually ispected by the user who may then be allowed to modify the tables maybe???
This has good scope for GUI development, the computational part you mention would apply here when displaying JTables of different sizes, in the most efficient way on screen - your display area might have tabs which display different sized tables automatically when they are dragged onto them.
Anyway, that's what I did, if you can make any sense out of that.

Final Year Project Ideas

I have to submit my idea for a final year software project and I'm thinking of doing an Air Traffic Control Simulation application written in Java. I am hoping you could give me some response about this idea? Is it to large? Impractical? Or if anyone out there has any other good ideas for a project I'd be greatfull if you could maybe post them,

The air traffic control idea is fine. I think it is a pretty cool project to work on for a college project. I did one where we (3 man team) simulated a street intersection. Half of it was all math, probabilities, statistics, etc. We had to find a way to optimize the traffic light times so that there was no major backups, mainly the Northbound righthand turn lane which always backed up for at least a mile during rush hour. On top of all of the math and simulations, one of the guys created a GUI for it overnight for the underlying simulation. I think this was a 1 month project, so that was about 3 man months, and almost 1/2 of that was gathering data, and determining what probability distrobutions to use, and putting them into code.
for the air traffic control, it could be very similar. Would you just be doing the the landing of planes? Or would you do take off and ground location of planes as well?

Senior Design Project Ideas

Hi,
I am looking for ideas that I could implement for my senior design project.
The topic of the project could be anything. It must involve a GUI (for which I will be using Swing) and it could encompass databases, web interfaces etc. depending on the goal of the project. The project should be completed in 15 weeks and will be worked upon by 4 people. So, now the question; does anyone have any ideas for a senior design project? It could also be a problem that someone faces and wants a solution for or something that you have heard someone do (which is doable in the given time frame).
Any suggestions/comments will be greatly appreciated.

Project ideas

Hi guys,
I'd like to do something Oracle based for my final year project (which I'll be starting this summer) and had the idea of creating a website with an online shop and video/pic galleries built from scratch and a Windows App (C#) for my martial arts gym. This would be running from my own web server using Oracle Linux/Apache
As this is a common type of project I had the idea of including biometrics (maybe a finger scanner) for gym users to register on sessions.
While this is an extra feature it probably isn't one the gym would actually implement once the project was finished. I was wondering if there was anything else I could do that would show a good understanding of relational databases (for potential employers of course!)
Maybe a mini CMS?
Any ideas welcome, after I graduate I'd like to do something in database development so anything you think may help me in that area would be appreciated.

Im a new user of OpenSparc. I have also booted up opensolaris on my FPGA. I have a ML505 board to work with.
Can anyone give me any ideas about any small project which i could do within one month as I am ruuning short of time already. But at the same time I want to something good with it. Like exploring anything related to high performance processing.

Hi Jin,
This will probably be a very complicated debugging problem. Here goes!
1. First, examine all the synthesis logs created by XST for any kind of warning or error. Then, examine the EDK place and route logs, and especially the timing reports for any timing violation, or other kind of error.
2. Next, I suggest running a stand-alone tests on the processor. The procedure to do this is found in the OpenSPARC T1 Design and Verification User's Guide. Start by running the core1_mini regression. All tests should pass. If so, then run core1_full. This will take a while (approx 700 tests at 30 seconds per test).
3. If all the above tests pass, then examine the software. There are four different boot PROM images, depending on whether you have a 1-thread or a 4-thread core, and whether you want to boot Solaris, or just run a program on top of Hypervisor. If you are booting a 4-thread core, the proper file should be 1c4t_obp_prom.bin Also, double-check that you are loading the prom.bin and the OpenSolaris image to the correct locations.

You could consider developing a Swing-based client application for MetBroker (http://www.agmodel.net/MetBroker). MetBroker provides consistent access to a number of weather databases around the world. Examples of the kind of application you could develop:
- a windchill calculator
- a simple crop growth model
- an applet that shows this year's temperatures against the average for a station.
You can use RMI to communicate with MetBroker. There are also a set of Swing-based Java beans you could use. The software is open source, and is reasonably well documented. Contact me through the link on the web page if you require further information.
