Projects vs libraries

This should be a relatively easy question to answer:
How do libraries and projects compare to each other (advantages and disadvantages of each)? I have several related VIs that are used together with one of the VIs making calls to the others. I'd like to have them organized together in the most efficient way.
A couple of times years ago in an older version of LabView, I had built libraries to do this. I don't remember projects being an option then.

And an llb should not really be used as an organizational tool - as least during debug. They were originally created so that LabVIEW users on win 3.x could create VIs with long files names like Mac users could. The only real valid use they have today is a way to distribute a VI and it's hierarchy. A single corrupt VI in an llb will make the entire llb unreadable and that is a major reason they should not be used in development.

How do you move events and projects between Libraries in iMove 10

I am running OSX 10.9.5 (Mavericks) & iMovie 10.0.5.
I am trying to free up space on my internal 1TB hard drive and want to archive events and completed projects onto an external hard drive, which has a second iMove v10 Library on. Under V9 of iMovie this function was easy, but I am struggling under V10.
What is the correct way to move events between libraries in iMovie.
When I attach the external drive containing my second iMovie Library, open it I can see all existing events stored (by move) under version 9 of iMovie.
Reading the Help (extract below) for this function it implies highlight the Event to move & then drag & drop into the second Library.
Shift+CMD with drag and drop onto the second library at the library name level will move Events that are not tied to a project, but for completed projects (Finalized under V9 or shared for example with iTunes in V10) it seems these can not be moved, the above function only copies them to the second library.
I have tried all different combinations of the Fn, Ctrl, Option CMD keys etc with and without SHIFT and the ones that work for this function only copy the event. I can not seem to get an event moved once attached to a project. File - Move Event will also move Events not tied to a completed project.
I have also tried copy to a second Library & then to delete the original events. Again it appears you can not delete events tied to a Project.
What I have also not been able to find is how to move a finalised Project to another Library and then see if events attached to that project would then move.
I have been able to move Events not tied to a Project to the second Library, then create a new project within this Library. This helps with all new projects & future import of Events. But does not help me free up current space by archiving.

Further to my original post below; I have done further analysis and it seams that if you have events tied to a project (mine are all finalised) you can not move events between Libraries. However, events that are not tied to a project can be moved. Either by Shift CMD or by using File- Move event.
What I have not been able to find is how to move a finalised Project to another Library and then see if events attached to that project would then move.
Copy works for events attached to a project. I have also tried copy to a second Library & then to delete the original events. Again it appears you can not delete events tied to a Project.
Does anyone know how to archive (move) Projects and/or events in iMovie 10.0.05 under Mavericks 10.9.5 to a second library on an external drive.

Sharing projects between libraries

I'm looking for a solution to share projects in sync between multiple libraries, without having to export & import projects each time. I'd like the shared projects to be in sync between the libraries.
I'm putting together a highlights portfolio, so in each of my many libraries, I have a "best of" project for the selects. I'd like each of these "best of" projects to be seen by a separate library which is just used to make my portfolio. Any time I update the best of in a given library, I'd like that to be reflected in the shared project in the portfolio library.
Is there a solution/workaround for this?
I found a free script that is supposed to make this possible, but I've had no luck with it thus far...

And maybe I'm missing something, but I don't believe that either of these two approaches solves my particular problem?
It seems that both approaches require that you import/export projects, or relocate masters, etc. What I'm looking to do is have projects from multiple libraries synced with each other "live", with out having to import/export or manage anything manually.
Simplest example: I have one library called "Brazil," and in it I have a project I've named "Best of Brazil". I have another library called "Portfolio," where I pull together all my best work from various projects. What I want is for the "Best of Brazil" project to show up automatically in the "Portfolio" project. And anytime I'm in the Brazil library & add some new shots to the Best of Brazil project, next time I go into my Portfolio library, those new shots or edits should be automatically in the mirrored Best of Brazil project -- inside the Portfolio library.
It's kind of like seeing & accessing other libraries, but only projects you've designated as shared...
Any thoughts?

Uninstall Reinstall FCP X Missing Projects, Events, Libraries

My situation is a mess. Once I updated FCP X to Mavericks, it went bad. FCP would not export. It would not stop rendering. I had no option but to uninstall and reinstall it. Prior to doing so, I went to "movies" and copied "FCP Events" and "FCP Projects" and pasted them to an external. Well, as you all know, the updated FCP so brilliantly (heavy emphasis on sarcascm) created this library crap that I don't quite comprehend yet. I reinstalled FCP and I pasted projects and events into movies. I cannot access events and projects that I previously had. I know that I must still have them (right?) because I copied and pasted everything. But FCP is not reading them for some reason. I don't know how or where to properly paste the prior projects and events into the framework of the new version in order to make them accessible.
Secondly, how do I go about storing my FCP media on an external so that FCP reads from the external. I am editing on a Mac Air (I know I am an idiot for buying an air for editing) and my hardrive is almost full.
I know this is no where near to being as clear as need be to illuminate my host of problems. You patience, further inquiries and answers are more than appreciated.

You have to use the update function to update the old projects and events to libraries.
Copy your current projects and events folders to the external drive into folders called Final Cut Projects and Final Cut Events. Run the update function and select the external drive to be update.

Labview Project management, libraries and vi's

The issue is that when attempting to manage multiple projects on one machine, the vi's are not calling vi's and libraries from the correct location. I.e. two copies of the library or VI on the same machine, results in undesired crosslinking between the projects.
How do you force Labview to use relative references instead of absolute references? How do you force labview to ignore vi's with the same name that are in other folders.
I have read references for the .net issues of using .config files to control the version to use, but how do you use the .config to control the location.

LabVIEW already uses relative paths for most VIs. The exceptions are VIs which are saved in logical folders like vi.lib and VIs which are saved on another volume from their caller. If LV is searching for files and having conflicts, the problem is not with that part.
Based on your description I'm guessing that you're not actually creating full copies of your libraries. For example, if you have VI A1 in library A and it calls VI B and then you copy VI A1 somewhere, but you fail to copy VI B as well, then the new copy won't find VI B, because it's not where it's supposed to be. That's the point where LV starts searching for files.
Another problem you might have is exactly that you open VIs which reference mutliple copies and then you get conflicts. For instance, in the previous example, if you open A1 in a project which already has B loaded, then A will now link to that B rather than the original B. If you have multiple such files loaded together, you'll get multiple conflicts.
The main issue people usually have with this sort of thing is that this is meant for reuse code and for that people want to have one canonical copy that you can update and then all the projects get it. It might be possible to do what you want with something like svn:externals, but I don't know the details and I seem to remember people not liking it for something like this.
If you really want all the files to be the project hierarchy, then make sure that each component uses only its own files and doesn't make calls into other random components, so that when you copy it, everything comes along with it. Also, make sure to have proper namespacing (either by using unique names or by using lvlibs).
The other alternative is to use something like VIPM to manage the code that goes into vi.lib or user.lib. If you use the pro version, you can create a VIPC file, which is a file which contains all the packages that go with the project, and save that file near the project. You will still need to apply the file using VIPM.
If you still want to have the code in the project folder, I would suggest you contact Jack Dunaway at Wirebird Labs. I know that he has experience with this type of setup and he might be able to consult you on how to do it properly.

If function "test" is called from a module written in a different language, you might be seeing a difference in the external (linker) name created for the function by different languages.
To mix C, C++ and Fortran, follow the rules in the Fortran Programming Guide, chapter 11 "C-Fortran Interface", for calling functions written in C, or for creating subroutines and functions to be called from C.
In C++ code, declare or define the function as extern "C". Then the external name of the function will be spelled the same in all three languages.
Example, where test() is written in Fortran and called from C++:

sorry my fault, the subprojects were still configured to GNU in the "Tool Collection" in the output I posted.
i now opened each subproject and made sure it is set to SunStudio just like my main project, but I still have the same error. here is my output:

Libraries in project tree

I noted recently that some of my projects have libraries added in a separate "Library" branch of the project tree while in other they are simply listed at the base tree level; see these two examples:
Is there any practical difference between these two arrangements, apart the aestethic? May I have problems in the second one? I am actually running several of my projects in the second scenario without apparent problems, so I tend to answer "no", but who knows?

I have the impression that it depends on original version the project was built.
If I add a library in a CVI2012 project it will be put in the Library folder, which is created if not yet present. Making the same operation in a CVI2009 project simply adds the library to the tree.
Opening a 2009 project without libraries in 2012 and adding a library creates the Library folder.
Opening a 2009 project with libraries in 2012 does not automatically create Library folder, but if I add a library it indeed creates it so that resulting project has a mixed situation with some libraries in the folder and others in the tree. I can then drag existing libraries into the Library folder, but this is not required to succesfully run the project in the IDE and create the executable.
I suppose the position of libraries in the project tree is simply a graphical representation and has no influence in program behaviour.
BTW I always use Edit >> Add files to project to add libs

Libraries from dependent projects

Hi there,
I have created an application in Jdeveloper 10g comprising of 2 projects.
Project 1 is a web app containing all the UI related content and a few java classes used for navigation related concerns.
Project 2 is a core java app comprising all the business logic and using Toplink JPA for database interactions.
Project 1 is the entry point project. We have created a project dependency in project 1 to include project2.
For deployment, In project 1 we create a deployment profile ear file. It generates the deployment artifacts but somehow the libraries being used in project 2 are not being included in the web-inf lib folder of project1. I have selected the Export checkbox in the Libraries tab of Project2 properties.
All the other artifacts from the dependent project 2 are correctly being included in the ear file
Let me know your thoughts. Should I have to add the libraries being used in project 2 to project 1 libraries also ?

Libraries of dependent project not deployed

Hi,
I have two projects, lets name it A and B. In Project A I defined some project libraries containing JAR's (Project Properties -> Libraries and Classpath -> Add Library).
Project B depends on Project A.
Now I created a deployment descriptor for a WAR in project B. Under the section "Library Dependencies" of the WAR profile I selected the option "Include Libraries from other projects" and I selected some libraries of project A for deployment. Under the section "WEB_INF/LIB -> Contributors" I selected these libraries as well, but under the section "WEB_INF/LIB -> Filters" the JAR's of these libraries don't appear! So when I create the WAR, these libraries are missing. The question is why??
I figured out, that when I set the option "Deployed by Default" in the libraries of Project A, the JAR's appear in the deployment descriptor of Project B under "WEB_INF/LIB -> Filters". However these libraries cannot be deselected anymore in the deployment descriptor of project B! So this doesn't help me, because I use project A as dependency in several other projects, and each projectes needs a different set of libraries of project A.
Is there a solution for this problem?

Since the forums are going up and down during USA business
hours, I was forced to contact Tech Support. It was frankly the
worse tech support experience of my life. The technician just
didn't get what I was trying to tell him. A senior tech finally
gave him a solution that worked. Here is that solution:
Uninstall Flash Player and Reinstall it. However, you just
can't use the Add/Remove Programs. You have to download a special
uninstaller from the following web site:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/
Before running the uninstall, I recommend you restart your
computer, then run the uninstaller after you have downloaded it.
This 'unloads' Flash Player from any task and also unloads the
ActiveX portion from memory.
After uninstalling and reinstalling, the 'Flash' in my
FlashHelp is back!

Looking for a "Super Project" feature

First, you will have to excuse me if this is the wrong forum for this. I just couldn't find any specific forum for Java project-build/management.
Now, I'm looking for some sort of a feature/ability/plug-in, especially for Eclipse, which resembles this:
Super projects - a combination of several projects under the same organizational structure. It doesn't refer to a new technology, nor a new feature of Java. It only refer to a way of organizing your projects.
A reason to have such thing, in case you were wondering, is to standardize the use of certain projects, all closely-related (technically and logically) to a certain system, but aren't related enough to exist in the same project.
For an example, let's say we have a certain system. It has a main project, which is the core of the system. Then, we have another project, which allows monitoring our system. It isn't a project that could be under the core-project, as it has too many differences (both technical and logical), but it uses lots of the same libraries, abilities and external resources the core-project uses as well (for example, a jar which allows a more comfortable use of JDBC, or just a configuration file), and of course still logically related to the core-project.
Therefore, those two projects, the core and the monitor, should be under the same super project - sharing libraries, abilities and external resources.
So how should it look like? Well, here are several ideas:
- First of all, a certain way to view those projects as being under the same super-project.
- An option (and warning-display if possible) of sharing jars. Instead of linking a certain jar to each project separately, a jar will be defined as shared, and could be shared by some or all of the projects in the super-project.
- Same thing with any other file (such as resource files).
- A meta-data file, containing information of which projects are in the super-project, what jars (or any other file) are being used, and what's the version of each of those jars.
- Comfortable save/load of those projects together, and their shared files (nothing more then a super directory with "Projects" directory for the projects in the super project, and a "Shared" directory for all the shared jars and other files).
I'll repeat myself - I'm not talking about a new technology, but just a feature, or a plug-in.
So, are you familiar of anything resembling that? or something at least in production stage?

Maven uses that big pile of metadata about your project for building your project from source, managing your dependencies, deploying your artifacts to a defined repository, running your tests and many other things as well.
Having something "simple and straightforward" would almost seem like a waste of effort, because with that kind of meta-data you can do much bigger things.
Edit: I just remembered [Apache Ivy|http://ant.apache.org/ivy/]: it's a dependency-management task for ant. This means that it handles the same task of a (very small) subset of Maven, but it a lot simpler to use (if you already know and use ant). It doesn't do any sub-projects or anything like that, but might be a more gentle introduction into the world of post-ant build/project/configuration management.

Flash Builder 4.5 Hangs When Loading Large Projects

I recently upgraded from Flash Builder 4.0 to Flash builder 4.5. I am running the 32 bit version of Eclipse Helios on windows 7, 64 bit. I have installed the latest 32 bit Java build, jdk1.6.0_25
Smaller projects and libraries appear to build and run fine. However when I attempt to load my main application, which is quite large, Eclipse Hangs for several minutes. Occasionally it will return after some time, but as soon as I move the mouse cursor again it hangs again. The last attempt had 1.8 Gigs of memory allocated to the eclipse process before I killed it.
Some other things I have noticed.
*) 4.5 does appear to be more sluggish for me generally than 4.0 for the demo apps I have built to test weather or not the install is working
*) If I do not attempt to actually open any files, I am able to clean the project and have it produce an executable
*) I have "build automatically" turned off, the problem does not seem to be initiated by the build. The problem seems to be something to do with loading large mxml files or files which include large mxml files.
*) The log files only complain about Eclipse being closed improperly (from me killing it aftter a prolonged hang) and about a collision with the ctrl+shift+G key combination
*) I have reverted to the original 4.0 plugin and the project still builds fine
*) Opening the stand alone flash builder 4.5 and pointing it at the same projects that work in 4.0 yields the same hanging symptoms as the 4.5 plugin version

I am really interested in several of of the new 4.5 features. Any comments / suggestions welcome. I am out of ways I know how to trouble shoot this short of rebuilding my app up from scratch by adding components one at a time, which would take a very long time.

When I run the application in the memory profiler under FB 4.0 it takes
about 80MB of RAM peak.
I can not get the app to launch out of FB 4.5.
I have reproduced this issue on two different machines running only Eclipse
both stand alone and the plugin versions.
My machine has 4GB of RAM, my typical usage is less than 2GB.
Right now with FB 4.0 I am working on the problem project and a few sample
projects and Eclipse is consuming about 600MB which seems normal to me.
The confusing thing for me is that everything works fine and is responsive
with FB 4.0 and the issue does not seem to be actually compiling the
application, rather it has something to do with how FB is parsing my source
code that causes the hang. Almost like somehow a circular dependency check
that used to work is now failing or something like that.
I am not sure how to find out what FB 4.5 is hanging on precisely. I can only
see that the logs look normal and memory usage climbs out of sight while it
is hanging.

How to define new classpath of libraries while making jar files with ant

I am useing eclipse and ant and trying to make a jar file. I have used some external jar files. I have managed to add external jar files to my jar. But Still I have a problem. In my project all libraries in lib folder. But when I put them into jar file. They are in the root folder.Classpath has changed and It couldn't find the class path.
Is there any body knows how to define a new class path for external libraries with ANT. or How can I put my libraries into a lib folder in jar ?? I think both of them would solve my problem.

Where are the jar files added to a project listed?

Hi Guys and Gals,
This should be an easy one, and yes, I have searched google and the forums.
My Master application/project uses task flows from other projects. These projects have been deployed to jar files, which are then added to my Resource Palette under the File System. From there, I may use these task flows in my Master project by clicking on their corresponding .jar file and selecting "Add to Project". However, where in the world are they listed?
I would think they would be in Project Properties->Libraries and Classpath, but they are not.
Using JDev 11.1.2.1.0.

All ADFLibs are put into a lib named ADFLibrary. If you ADFLibs are dependent on other libs or jars you may see a lib 'ADF Dependend Libraries' which contain all secondary jars.

How to find out what libraries to import

Hi JDev experts
How do I figure out which libraries to include for jars that I need to import. Particularly, I need to import the following:
oracle.javatools.util.CommandModel
oracle.javatools.util.CommandParser
it's hard to figure out from library names.

Go to project properties->libraries and click the add library.
At the top of the window that pops-up you'll see a search box, put in the name of the class you are looking for and press enter, and JDeveloper will find the library that contains that class.

BUG? Default Project Properties, Business Components: Base Classes

Is it just me, or is there a bug in the Default Project Properties Dialog when attemptiong to specify custom classes for the Business Component Base Classes.
I have extended EntityCache and can successfully specify it as a base class via the Project Properties dialog, but in Default Project Properties, I get an error stating: "The selected class is not a valid superclass. Either is does not implement the interface oracle.jbo.server.EntityCache or it has an invalid modifier".
FYI: My custom library has been added to the Default Project Properties->Libraries.
Any help?

Does it work if you use the:
Tools | Preferences... | Business Components > Base Classes panel instead?
