Promoting APEX... Can you do it?

As a consultant I see a lot of customers... what have this to do with APEX?
Well, most of my missions are not APEX related, but for one or an other reason, on 9 out of 10 the customer is using APEX when I'm leaving! ;-)
As the same happened with my current customer I thought to post the story on my blog. (http://dgielis.blogspot.com)
I suppose you can do the same! It's great for you, as you can use your favorite tool, it's good for the customer, as he'll have a lot of added value, and it's good for Oracle, as APEX will get more known! A Win-Win(-Win) situation!

Summarizing the ideas I have gathered from some offline conversations with Scott, Sergio and Vikas I have come up with the following strategies:
1) Target larger companies (mainly at a department level) to either replace existing MS Access applications or poorly working J2EE apps. Use existing contacts and even do some MS Access migrations for free - to get the ball rolling.
2) Take real world requirements for a J2EE app (with real data and their coporate design) and quickly build a prototype. This is what I have done and it was a great success. The design, logos and the actual data was crucial.
3) Bid for fixed priced projects
4) Use Apex in data warehouse projects. I can use my deep knowledge of Oracle Portal and IAS to build a truly integrated application. In a DWH context you always need some data entry / data manipulation frontends.
... after the ball is rolling, support seems to be a good strategy as well (thanks Dimitri).
Coaching / Training should be interesting as well.
Targeting smaller and medium businesses should be lucrative as well, I just don't have that many contacts in that area yet.
And I will definitely use Oracle Express Edition to build my own applications for sale. I am currently looking for business partners who have a good grasp of their customer needs. I am specifically looking for projects where the customer can easily calculate the return on investment.

Actually, I apologize I should have given more details.
I am trying to post to an apex URL.
My total purpose is to pass login information and query criteria to a page from another web page.
When the person pushes the button on their web page, it will send login data and query criteria to an apex page. In turn that page will initiate a csv download that the person can utilize on their local machine. I have the web page set up to initiate the data download. I can accomplish that, but I have two problems:
1) I would like to send that information as a post instead of get in the URL to hide the login information to the public.
2) The process is a before header process therefore, setting any page items will not happen. As a result, I cannot set a page item and then limit the query results for the data download.
Therefore, I would like to post a request to my APEX URL to make that happen. Part of me wonders if it is possible or not.

Using APex with Airtunes from an iMAc can you control playing tunes?

Hi, got an imac at Xmas, am looking into Airport stuff, and found this APex, with wireless play of iTunes music, Ive been looking into the Philips streamium and stuff doe playing tunes.
My question is once setup from your iMac to play music wirelessly how can you control it? Ive read the manual but doesnt say anything. So can all you do is press shuffle on the iMac and then it plays everything?
I know you could do playlists and stuff, but I have all my music, kids music, wife's music in my library, so theres a real mixture, and Im sick of listening to High School Musical!!
So can you contol the song playing, ie skip etc with it?

iTunes needs to be running in order to stream music to the Airport Express so therefore - no - the Mac running iTunes cannot be in sleep mode. It must be powered up and running, though you could blank the screen if you wish.
Why did Apple not build the function of the Keyspan Express remote into the Airport Express. Likely because it would have increased the cost of the product by 50%, while at the same time adding a feature most people would be happy to live without - in other words, not a great idea from a product marketing perspective.

Can you run Embedded PL/SQL Gateway and Oracle HTTP Server at the same time

I know this will sound a bit odd but their is a business case for asking this. Can you run APEX via the Embedded PL/SQL Gateway and the Oracle HTTP Server at the same time? Would their be any security/stability/etc issues I'd need to worry about? I know that I'll need to run them on different ports.

I think I've done this in the past. Theres no technical reason why you can't do this as far as I know.
I can't remember if I used different ports or same port.

Apex can't parse query on pipelined function

Hi,
I have a report based on a sql query which selects from a pipelined function. The pipeline function and the collection sql type it returns live in the parsing schema of the application.
I get the error: "Query cannot be parsed within the Builder." There is no ORA-xxxxx message.
If I check "generic columns" (parse at runtime), and run, it says "ORA-00904 <name of pipelined function>: invalid identifier".
If I qualify the name of the pipelined function with the schema name, it works.
Or, if I replace the bind variables with literals, it works.
Or, if I replace the columns with *, it works.
I'm using Apex 2.0
Does anyone have an ideas why I am seeing this behaviour?

Can you show the query you're using in your report?
I have used pipelined functions many times, you can see an example of how I've used them here -

Can you check for data in one table or another but not both in one query?

I have a situation where I need to link two tables together but the data may be in another (archive) table or different records are in both but I want the latest record from either table:

If your tables are big it could be necessary to do the filtering (according to your condition) in an early step (the first CTE).

Yesterday, as today's deadline for filing tax returns approached, I was paralyzed by the inability to create new IRS PDF forms and to retrieve archived ones from a year ago. My computer went crazy. 24 hours later, I am still paralyzed. Can you help?

My computer went crazy yesterday on two occasions involving PDF documents. One dealt with attachments to an email from a bona fide corporation. The other dealt with IRS PDF forms & schedules needed for today's submission.
As both dealt with PDF and had nothing else in common, I suspected my PC had a virus. When I asked a local store technician, he agreed. I turned to Norton, which protects my PC from viruses, and after a few hours of really thorough searching, the computer was found to have no viruses.
Before describing what I call "crazy" computer behavior, you need to know that I have long had IE8 as my default browser but a few weeks ago switched to Mozilla Firefox because IE8 had beome incompatible with some websites from which I get information.
When I received the email from AT&T email service and clicked the first of four icons representing attachments, there was figuratively an explosion on my monitor: a series of new tabs, each called New Tab, burst onto the monitor--but no text or picture. The new tabs appeared faster than I coul kill them. I finally decided just to shut down the computer, hoping they would not reappear when I restarted. I was wrong. After 2 repeats, I decided to forget about the attachments and asked the sender to send them to me by regular mail.
That was no solution for my IRS PDFs. I wanted to complete filling in the various forms and schedules that I had begun months ago so that I could mail them today to the IRS (without having to copy them all in ink). When I tried to open the first one, BOOM. The same thing happened: the blizzard of New Tabs atop blank pages; my IRS form or schedule did not show up. Did the same shutdown/restart routine with the same results.
When I looked at the list of current forms that had to be completed, I noticed something very strange: the icons that began the listing of the documents' names were replaced one by one by Mozilla icons. When I moused over them, they said Firefox HTML. Why?
Starting the day today, I had the same experience. What's more, when I started to retrieve 2012 IRS PDFs from a year ago, the same New Tab tabs appeared and had to be killed, and Mozilla icons replaced whatever icon was there before.
Assuming that the problem arose with Adobe Reader's reading of the PDFs, I contacted Adobe but got no helpful phone number because PDFs are a free service and was directed to use this Forum to get help.
What do I have to do to (a) read and use PDFs in the normal way and (b) remove the Mozilla icon from those that have appeared on icon documents. If Mozilla is the source of the problem, shall I go back to IE8? (In my 80s, I want eventually to replace my old computer but for the time being I must continue using it. It will not take an IE9. Anther possible default browser would be Google Chrome, but I have unfavorable impressions of it because of its intrusiveness, loading my PC with stuff I do not need.

The problem is absolutely not Reader. The problem is that FireFox has stepped in front of Reader and handles all the PDF stuff - wrongly in your case. FireFox is DESIGNED to take over PDF files. But it is not capable of doing IRS forms!
To start with go back to IE for these forms. When you save them to disk DO NOT DOUBLE CLICK ON THEM until this is fixed. Just open the in the normal way - start Adobe Reader and use Open from the File menu.

You'll have to have an ID you all share in order to have a shared iCloud account. It would be sensible for each person to have their own ID and their own iCloud account for email and their own data (each would be on their own computer/iOS device or user account on a Mac) and then have a common account which everyone would sign into in System Preferences>Mail, Contacts and Calendars to access shared data.
You don't want to be all using the email in a common account - if people are using email aliases remember these can't be detached from the account and transferred to another one. Having all your emails mixed up together can be somewhat impracticable.

Can you use the same Apple ID on more than one MacBook Pro for updates and applications?

We just got a few new MacBook Pro's and when I went to install updates it said I need to make an Apple ID. Can you use the same Apple ID and email address for that Apple ID on multiple machines, or do I need them both to be unique per machine? I'm not sure how that works when you have multiple machines.

An Apple ID is a user name you use for everything you do with Apple. Creating an account for an Apple service, such as the iTunes Store or the App Store, creates an Apple ID. Apple ID allows you to access other Apple services. So you can use the same Apple ID for up to 10 Macs associated with it.
To create an Apple ID you need to enter your full name and your primary email address as your Apple ID. This will be used as the contact email address for your account.

You should certainly be able to add content by reference to itunes from such a disk (even before the update) - so long as itunes knows the location of the file (set Preferences not to copy to local library when adding the media) it will stream it to AppleTV if the disk is available.
I hope you're right, but I'd be surprised if current Extremes can be upgarded to provide a full Home Sharing service - marvellous if they can but I'd be surprised as i've long said we need an Apple media server either based on TC or AE to do this kind of thing.

It depends on what you want to do.
You could, for example, have one AppleID for iCloud backup [and therefore message syncing, notes syncing, etc] and a second one for iTunes [music, iBooks, etc].
But if you are looking for a way to flip everything between different appleIDs, then no.

No, in this case the 2 user accounts with its own Apple IDs would be completely seperated.
If you want to share this things like music and app purchases you will have to to something else.
1. Create two user accounts on your Mac (user A and user B).
2. Create two iCloud accounts just for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Photos, etc. (one for user A and one for user B):
On your Mac (with Mac OS X Lion or Mountan Lion):
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > iCloud > Create an Apple ID (button in left corner)
On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch (iOS 5 or later):
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > iCloud > Get a free @me.com address and create a new Apple ID

It is not recommended because you shouldn't share your Apple ID account information with other people but you could set up your old Apple ID as an account just for store purchases (Apps, Music, ...) so that everyone of you can manage the purchases in their own library (Access is limited to 10 devices). Therefore you have to setup this "old" ID in Settings of your iOS devices (Settings > iTunes & App Store) and in iTunes on your Mac.
