Proper way to mask all video except head of person speaking?

I would like to know the proper way to remove the background of a person speaking so that it shows their head. I would then like to change the shape to say an oval cutout and the feather the edge of the video. What is the best way to achieve this.

go to Effects>Video Filters>Matte and choose 'Mask Shape'. drag this onto your clip. Douple click on the clip to bring it into the viewer, go to the Filters tab and change the 'Shape' to Oval, then use the sliders to get the desired proportions.
Then position of the Oval mask can be keyframed so if your subject is moving, you can track the mask over the movement.
Then, go back to Effects>Video Filters>Matte and drag the 'Mask Feather' filter onto the clip, and use the slider on this filter to apply the desired amount of feather.

What is the proper way to close all open sessions of a NI PXI-4110 for a given Device alias?

I've found that, when programming the NI PXI-4110 that, if a the VI "niDCPower Initialize With Channels VI" (NI-DCPower pallette) is called with a device
alias that all ready has one or more sessions open (due to an abort or other programming error) a device reference results from the reference out that has a (*) where "*" is post-fixed to the device reference where and is an integer starting that increments with each initialize call. In my clean up, I would like to close all open sessions. For example, let's said the device alias is "NIPower_1" in NI Max, and there are 5 open sessions; NIPower_1, NIPower_1 (1), NIPower_1 (2), NIPower_1 (3), and NIPower_1 (4). A simple initialize or reset (using niDCPower Initialize With Channels VI, or, niDCPower Initialize With Channels VI, etc.) What is the proper way to close all open sessions?

When you Initialize a session to a device that already has a session open, NI-DCPower closes the previous session and returns a new one. You can verify this very easily: try to use the first session after the second session was opened.
Unfortunately, there is a small leak and that is what you encountered: the previous session remains registered with LabVIEW, since we unregister inside the Close VI and this was never called. So the name of the session still shows in the control like you noted: NIPower_1, NIPower_1 (1), NIPower_1 (2), NIPower_1 (3), and NIPower_1 (4), etc.
There may be a way to iterate over the registered sessions, but I couldn't find it. However, you can unregister them by calling "IVI Delete Session". Look for it inside "niDCPower Close.vi". If you don't have the list of open sessions, but you have the device name, then you can just append (1), (2) and so forth and call "IVI Delete Session" in a loop. There's no problem calling it on sessions that were never added.
However - I consider all this a hack. What you should do is write code that does not leak sessions. Anything you open, you should close. If you find yourself in a situation where there are a lot of leaked sessions during development, relaunching LabVIEW will clear it out. If relaunching LabVIEW is too much of an annoyance, then write a VI that does what I described above and run it when needed. You can even make it "smarter" by getting the names of all the NI-DCPower devices in your system using the System Configuration or niModInst APIs.

Is there any way to delete all cookies except those used on the home page?

Is there any setting in Firefox which would permit me the deletion of all cookies on exit EXCEPT those associated with with specific pages? For example, the iGoogle home page requires a cookie to be set which recognizes the session created in a prior access. If all cookies are deleted on closure of Firefox, the user is required to sign in to iGoogle every time to see their home page. Currently you can delete cookies on exit or accept cookies based on exception. I would like to delete all cookies except those from permitted sources. There is no setting for this that I can find.

You can let all cookies expire if you close Firefox and set an allow exception for domains that you want to keep the cookies from. Don't use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear cookies as that will remove all cookies including ones with an exception, but just let the others expire.
You can always remove cookies manually, e.g. via a click on the favicon and More Information and View Cookies.

after effects has this great feature where you choose COLLECT and basically what it does is collects all your media files and puts them in a folder. What the best way to do this in FCP?

I would like to watch youtube without the add's and all the other clutter around the video's. Now there is a really nice extension for Safari which can do that for you: clea.nr videos. Does a really nice job (see picture) - try it.
However the video add's which probably are the most annoying especially when they are dutch still show up despite having installed adblock. I noticed that there is no such thing as Adblockplus for safari (in chome and firefox it solves this problem). Is there a fix for this problem in safari? Or it's chosing between clea.nr video's with video add's or for chrome which I don't like.
I'm using a macbook air with 10.8.5 and safari 6.0.5.

Using http://clicktoflash.com/ or similar extensions allows viewing HTML5 video instead of Flash for most youtube pages, and here, on the few pages that I see, anyway... means that no video ads are shown before the main one.
Glimmerblocker can be set up to block the ads in Youtube/ Flash (or still could recently, when I tried it)

Proper Way to change sequences video mode

I have a sequence that I originally setup as DV-NTSC Anamorphic and I want to change it to 24p. I know that I can click on Final Cut menu and select Quick setup to select something but does this actually change the sequence I was working on? If not, how do I go about changing the current settings for the actual sequence? And can you have multiple sequences in a single project that each have their own video specifications?

When you change the quick setup, it will only affect the NEXT sequence you open.
If you want to change the time base of a sequence, you have to create a new sequence and copy in your clips.
Every sequence in a project can have a different settings. Just don't try to nest all of them together.

What is the proper way to extend 2nd generation time capsule network to 2nd generation Airport Express?

I have a Simultaneous Dual Band Time Capsule. Up until now, I have been extending the network with the Airport Express (2nd Gen, the 802.11n model). Since it was not simultaneous dual band, it was extending over the 2.4 GHz band so as it could extend b, g, and n and support my iPhone at 2.4 n as well as my iPad and MacBook Pro at 5 GHz.
I just bought the new simultaneous dual band unit, which theoreticalkly should be able to extend both bands.
Now, it is not that simple. I also run a guest network, which I assume also gets extended when WDS is on. I also still have the old Express which I have relegated to another part of the house.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule. Which one do I join? How do I know that both are extended? When I connect to the <SSID 5GHz> now my iPhone can see that one and connect to it, so I am assuming it is NOT going at 5 GHz.
And I have no idea at all what the guest network is doing....
Does anyone have any insight into tthe proper way to configure all the units, and what I can expect? My network is as follows:
Airport Express (Simultaneous Dual Band)
Cable Modem > Time Capsule (Simultaneous Dual Band) >
Airport Express (802.11n, last gen)

Unfortunately, the Guest Network cannot be extended.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule.
This likely indicates that the Time Capsule has been setup to use separate names for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, instead of the default, which uses the same wireless network name for both bands.
In order for the AirPort Express to be able to extend both bands, the Time Capsule will need to be configured so that both bands use the same wireless network name.
Then, configure the AirPort Express to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule, and it will extend both bands. At least, that is the way an AirPort Extreme works, and I assume that the Express is the same. I don't have an Express here to test, but will in another day or two.
The location of the Express is important, since the 5 GHz signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. You may need to experiment by placing the Express closer to the Time Capsule than normal. With an AirPort Extreme, I find that the Extreme must be located no more than about half the distance from the main router to the area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you continue to use the previous model Express to extend as well, it too must be configured to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule. Configured this way, the Express will extend the stronger of the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz signals, so it will likely extend the 2.4 GHz band unless it is located close to the Time Capsule.
To find out which band the previous model Express is extending, locate a Mac laptop close to the Express and hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the AirPort icon at the top of the screen. The info displayed will indicate whether you (and the Express) are connecting using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

Need help resetting all video settings

I have a macbook with a broken display but the DVI out works, unfortunately it's set to PAL and the TV I have it hooked up to is flickering so bad I can't see the selections to set it back to NTSC...
Is there a way to reset all video setting back to factory by key commands? I've tried resetting the PRAM and the NVRAM without any luck.
Any Ideas?

One thing you could try is starting in Safe mode, but I am not sure if that will work or not using a TV through the Apple Mini DVI to Video Adapter (which I assume you are using).

Or any way for me to delete everything but pictures, so the WHOLE 5 GB iPhoto library is not backed up EVERY SINGLE TIME I add a single picture !!!

There are a number of backup applications that do incremental backups, i.e. copying only those new or changed files. I use Synk Standard for that and the incremental backups are very quick. To find other backup apps search at VersionTracker.com for "backup".
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: iPhoto 8's new option in it's rebuild library window, "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" may make this tip obsolete. We'll know when users have occasion to use it and see if that's the case.

1 DAG with 2 members
- One member is located in Head Office and the other member is located in DR site. All of the mailbox databases are located only in HO (Plan to add additional second member in HO soon). Now what is the proper way to install windows patches on the
member in HO? I don't want to move the databases to DR site as much as possible.

To update the DAG members with new patches, the update process should be managed to prevent all of the DAG members from being offline at the same time.
To do this, I recommend you move the active mailbox databases off a particular server so that it can be patched, and if necessary rebooted, without causing any downtime for mailbox users on that database.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Here's what I do when I have iTunes problems and it works 9 out of 10 times. I have Ccleaner; It's a wonderful tool to have. If you don't have it, google it and install it, just the free version. You'll see the list of all of your installed programs in there to unstall (among of a host of other things you could do with that program) but anyway, right click on Apple Software first to repair, when done then right click on Apple Application Support to repair, then when done with that, right click on iTunes to repair that and all should be well after that. No uninstall should be necessary at all when you do all that.

What is the best way to proceed if I would like to catch all exceptions in my Swing app?
If there is an unexpected RuntimeException in my app, I would like to display an error message rather than having the program react silently. Is there a good way of making sure all uncaught exceptions are trapped and reported somewhere in the end? And are there any special inconveniences to such a strategy?
