Proposal for a sticky thread "Performance of SAP standard"

Hello,
in this form there are many questions about your programs, selects function modules but what about the SAP standard programs, they are not always the best performing things on your system. What do you think about a thread with improvements of SAP standard programs?
Ok, that should be the job of SAP, but sometimes everybody needs a little kick.
So this thread should collect suggestions of improvements of SAP coding. These suggestions should be very precise, so SAP should implement them easily. I'm pretty sure, everybody will find some not optimized code during debugging, learning, ... .
So , lets start with an example
Function module CO_SF_HEADER_GOODS_ISSUE
SELECT SINGLE * FROM caufv WHERE aufnr EQ aufnr.
There is no need for select *, because only the fields
autyp
loekz
objnr
gamng
gmein
rsnum
are needed during the FM.
so lets improve the code
select single aufnr loekz autyp gamng gmein rsnum
from caufv into (wa_caufv-aufnr,
                  wa_caufv-loekz,
                  wa_caufv-autyp,
                  gamng, gmein, rsnum)
With this code we can also kill three moves in the last lines.
MOVE: caufv-gamng TO gamng,
      caufv-gmein TO gmein,
      caufv-rsnum TO rsnum.
That was easy, on my testsystem it is 38% less database-time for the select and a little for the three moves.
What do you think?
Matthias

Not sure I'm on board,  I doubt SAP will take suggestions for modifying their code via a forum post, I think it is best to go thru OSS.
Anyway, a little story for ya.  We had a program which was sort of like CO41(collective planned order conversion), but was custom because we needed to include characterisics, so we have this program that gets all of the planned orders and then does CO40 transaction over each one.  This worked in the begining, but after some time the runtime was extremely bad, like hours long.  So I did some investigation and found the exact SELECT statement deep inside of CO40, and found that the WHERE clause was not written in such a way that was good for my company.  I contacted OSS, and pointed them to the exact place in the code that was giving us a problem.  I told them that the one line in the WHERE clause needed to b commented out, then the performance would be much better.  They came back after a number of days, and said, the SELECT statement was written in such a way that it works for all business processes.  At my company, our business process dictated that the one line in the WHERE clause was not necessary and even hurting our performance.  Anyway, they said they would not issue a change for us and that we either had to hack it ourselves or totally redo the way our task list groups where set up.  The problem was is that we had a couple task list groups, with thousands and thousands of materials assign to it. This was the problem.  So I hacked the standard program, and it actually shaved of 3 hours of processing time.

Rich Heilman

  • Best Practice for PDF print forms based on SAP standard

    Hi,
I have copied the SAP standard PDF form F_D_INT_SCALE_00 to a Z form, and am using it in conjunction with the standard print program RFDZIS01_PDF.  However I need to output some additional fields that are not supplied by the print program / interface (for example Customer VAT number).
What is the best practice for achieving this?  As far as I can see the only way is to take a copy of the standard print program and modify it to select the extra data, and modify the interface.  I never like taking copies of standard programs though for obvious reasons.
If I had this requirement with a smartform it would be a simple case of embedding ABAP code into the Z smartform and leaving the print program alone, but unfortunately there is no provision for the non-PDF version of the Interest Letter to be sent by email.
    Thanks in advance,
    Vindaloo

    Thanks for your reply Robert.
However I think you are referring to Smartforms when you mention Code Initialization and Global Data declarations.  I need to know the best way to modify copies of standard Adobe Print Forms.

  • Wrong record for PSA in Education and Training (SAP Standard) report

    Hello All,
Assuming I have 2 records for a particular Personnel number in Infotype 0001,
    1) First record
    Personnel Nubmer: 10000000
    End Date: 05/30/2004
    Start Date: 12/31/2004
    Personnel subarea: A
    2) Second record
    Personnel Nubmer: 10000000
    End Date: 01/01/2005
    Start Date: 12/31/9999
    Personnel subarea: B
When I executed the Education and Training (SAP Standard) report, I then selected the PSA-"B" and the other period which is From: 01/01/2005 to 12/31/999. The result is that it still displays the first record which is already delimited.
    How come this happen?
    Thanks!
    - Annalyn

    Hi,
    Check PAR1 and PAR2,
Can you seen two records for that emp.
And aslo check IT 0001, 0041 overview from pa30 and if you see the two dates delete the incorrect date and checkthe report.

  • How to Enhance the SAP standard WebService XMLA or others

Now we will show the SAP BW data for other application, we apply the SAP standard WebService XMLA to retrieve the BW Cube or ODS data for external system, but the authorization for data scope is a question, I didn't know how to pass the logon user name and password to the BW system,  the SAP standard WebService XMLA did not provide the paramters for input these variants. So I want to enhance this webservice but didn't know how to do it, if anyone know this please tell me, thank you very much!

    Hi,
When you try to access url of webservice it will prompt for user/password. .Net and Java have provision to supply user/password to webservice.

    1. what is meant by DB partitioning, in which scenario we use it and what the steps to do this task.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/33/dc2038aa3bcd23e10000009b38f8cf/content.htm
    2. Navigational attributes are use when v want to make use of this attr in reporting with certian actions. My question is do navigational attributes improves the performance if so how and if not what are the draw backs.
    Nav Attribute:-
The dataflow performance/space is affected in the infoobject load, since the sid tables is growing with navigational attributes
The dataflow performance/space is not affected in transactional data (except for the aggregates).
So every navigationa attribute in an infoobject can be added to the infocubes without any cost.
The performance in query is affected, but the solution is simple: do not use!
    Please check the following thread:
    Re: Navigate Attribute
    3. Multiprovider are use to access the data from different infoprovider to generate the reports.
In what way multiprovider inproves the performance??
--THis causes performance degradation as OLAP has to divide the query in many sub-queries.
    4. Number Range buffering when it is used what r the steps has to follow ??
    5. what is the procedure to calculate the DB statistics. what are the technical conents v install for this, when we install this befor the development are after completion of the developement and in what way they are helpfull to measure the performance.

  • Sticky Thread: Funny threads?

For our occational amusement I'd suggest to add a sticky thread here where everybody can add funny/strange/whatever threads found in SDN.
E.g. I think this one is very funny
The specified item was not found.
Someone asking a rather strange questions and lots of people posting stuff not necessarily related to the question. Than even duplication of answers occurs by different posters.

  • V04 Error.... Sticky thread didn't help :(

    Morning all.
I got the V04 error for the first time yesterday morning (I've had BtVision since January) and I am still getting the error now.
I have followed the instructions in the sticky thread about V04 several times, along with turning the hub and vision box off seperately to each other and sadly it has made no difference.
BBC Iplayer works fine and I can download on my pc at the maximum line speed no problem, so I have no idea why this is happening.
We dont get much reception and so rely on On Demand to watch a number of programs, so would love to get this sorted as soon as.

  • Looking for help to increase performance on a DB XML database.

I'll try to answer all the questions in the Performance Questionnaire from here.
    1) I'm primarily concerned with insertion performance. The best I've seen so far is about 6000 inserts/per second. This is running inside a VMWare VM with 3 GB of RAM. The VM is set up with 2 CPUs each with 2 cores. The host machine has 8GB of RAM with a dual core 2.67 GHZ i7 (2 logical cores per CPU). The best performance I've seen is by running 2 threads of execution. A single thread only gets me about 2500 inserts per/second.
This is all within a very simple, isolate program. I'm trying to determine how to re-architect a more complicated system, but if I can't hope to hit 10k inserts per second with my sample, I don't see how it's possible to expand this out to something more complicated.
    2) Versions: BDBXML version 2.5.26 no special patches or config options
    3) BDB version 4.8.26, no special patches
    4) 2.67 dual core, hyperthreaded intel i7 (4 logical processors)
    5) Host: Windows 7 64-bit, Guest: RHEL5 64-bit
    6) Underlying disk is a 320GB WesternDigital barricuda (SATA). It's a laptop harddrive, I believe it's only 5400 RPM. Although the VM does not have exclusive access to the drive, it is not the same drive as the Host sytem drive. (i.e. Windows runs off of the C drive, this is the D drive). The has a 60GB slice of this drive.
    7) Drive is NTFS formatted for the host. Guest, ext3
    8) Host 8gb, guest 3gb (total usage when running tests low, i.e. no swapping by guest or host)
    9) not currently using any replication
    10) Not using remote filesystem
    11) db_cv_mutex=POSIX/pthreads/library/x86_64/gcc-assembly
    12) Using the C++ API for DBXML, and the C API for BDB
    using gcc/g++ version 4.1.2
    13) not using app server or web server
    14) flags to 'DB_ENV->open()': | DB_SYSTEM_MEM
              | DB_INIT_MPOOL
              | DB_INIT_LOCK
              | DB_INIT_LOG
              | DB_INIT_TXN
              | DB_RECOVER
              | DB_THREAD
    other env flags explicitly set:
    DB_LOG_IN_MEMORY 1
    DB_LOG_ZERO 1
    set_cachesize(env, 1, 0, 1) // 1GB cache in single block
    DB_TXN_NOSYNC 1
    DB_TXN_WRITE_NOSYNC 1
I am not using a DB_CONFIG file at this time.
    15) For the container config:
    transactional true
    transactionsNotDurable true
    containertype wholedoc
    indexNodes Off
    pagesize 4096
    16) In my little test program, I have a single container.
16.1) flags are the same as listed above.
16.2) I've tried with an empty container, and one with documents already inside and haven't noticed much difference at this point. I'm running 1, 2, 3, or 4 threads, each inserting 10k documents in a loop. Each insert is a single transaction.
16.3) Wholedoc (tried both node & wholedoc, I believe wholedoc was slightly faster).
16.4) The best performance I've seen is with a smaller document that is about 500 bytes.
16.5) I'm not currently using any document data.
    17)sample document:
    <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' standalone='no'?>
    <Record xmlns='http://someurl.com/test' JID='UUID-f9032e9c-7e9a-4f2c-b40e-621b0e66c47f'>
    <DataType>journal</DataType>
    <RecordID>f9032e9c-7e9a-4f2c-b40e-621b0e66c47f</RecordID>
    <Hostname>test.foo.com</Hostname>
    <HostUUID>34c90268-57ba-4d4c-a602-bdb30251ec77</HostUUID>
    <Timestamp>2011-11-10T04:09:55-05:00</Timestamp>
    <ProcessID>0</ProcessID>
    <User name='root'>0</User>
    <SecurityLabel>unconfined_u:unconfined_r:unconfined_t:s0-s0:c0.c1023</SecurityLabel>
    </Record>
    18. As mentioned, I'm looked to get at least 10k documents per second for insertion. Updates are much more infrequent, and can run slower. I am not doing any partial updates, or replacing documents. In the actual system, there are minor updates that happen to document metadata, but again, these can be slower.
    19. I'm primarily concerned with insertion rate, not query.
    20. Xquery samples are not applicable at the moment.
    21. I am using transactions, no special flags aside from setting them all to 'not durable'
    22. Log files are currently stored on the same disk as the database.
    23. I'm not using AUTO_COMMIT
    24. I don't believe there are any non-transactional operations
    25. best performance from 2 threads doing insertions
    26. The primary way I've been testing performance is by using the 'clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME)' calls inside my test program. The test program spawns 1 or more threads, each thread inserts 10k documents. The main thread waits for all the threads to complete, then exits. I'm happy to send the source code for this program if that would be helpful.
    27. As mentioned, I'm hoping to get at least 10k inserts per second.
    28. db_stat outputs:
    28.1 db_stat -c:

  • What Are the Exact Basic rules for Replying a Thread...... -:)   @};-

    Hi Experts,
After Looking into the forums many days I had a small conclusion about forums,
SAP Forums are better place I have seen for getting a goo dhelp & Knowledge...
Why can't we make it a BEST Place.
This is just a small doubt which I would like to clear myself first,
I have seen many users In the forums asking for a Basic Questions
When cleared, But still they want to have a Spoon feeding with a Sample Code.
When Sample Code Given they will provide the original code and requests for Modifications.
These always looks to me as crazy.
I have seen somelong time agin by moderators posting that In SCN there will be no SPOON FEEDING.
I am not sure whether if still this Rule AVAILABLE or NOT.
Ok if the task is really difficult let them ask again and again,
And it was not replied, let them repost, I agree with them.
And How about a User Registered in SDN very long back and asking for a silly question in below thread,
[Sendin Email to the recipent list -Need correct FM |Getting the address from shipto partner of Bil. item not directly from C.ma]
    This is one more example, really funny, The thread poster needs the solution at any cost, he doesn't require and Suggetions,,, {He Only needs Solution}
    [Radio Buttons |Radio Buttons;
    [Turning Off Debugger |Turning Off Debugger;
    [Regarding Amount in words|Regarding Amount in words;
There are 100's of threads like this....Everyone knows this facts.
Check this who answered this one and who replied correct answer, who copied, finally who was rewarded...!
[how to validate POsting period |Re: how to validate POsting period]
    Now My Real Problem is....!
User is always intelligent, Only the weakness is in Contributor, trying to help them,..,
And I openly say that Someone requesting for basic help is not DUMB, But the Contributor replying forgets
the basic rules " Why Contributing ?"
According to me It's not the Requestor to see Rules & Requlations before posting the threads,
But its responsibilty for the Contributing person to see th Rules & Requlations before replying the threads,
If we follow the rules and stand on a single word or rule or anything there will be Good Result.
Major Problem is in US not anyone else.
Example Some one saying search in the forum,,, then please no replies after that...
But we are very pity hearted again we post the solution,,,
But it is not at all enough(for cintribtor's)... they will copy the solution and post again by slight Modifications,
And Some users are having 500,600,700,800 Posts with 0 points, registered long long back.
They are completly dependent on forums,,, As they goto office and as they eat, The same they open forums and ask Queries...
They will never realize what they are doing,, and we will never let them improve better...
Finally Lets Discuss About this and Correct & Suggest me if I am wrong,
Is my thoughts are going in the right way or not I am not even sure... Please Aslo Correct me if I did any mistakes.
    Thanks & regards,
    Dileep .C

    Title Changed Form
"What to do when someone asking for Basic Questions" to "What Are the Exact Basic rules for Replying a Threads...... "

    Hi Stephen,
    Very useful Information,
First tell me a little something about my self...
After completion of my certification(as a fresher) I was down the streets hunting the job,
with the insufficient knowledge and being a non-experienced person, I never got one.
And mean while when I got my "S-UserID", I used to be proud, To say frankly, I registerd in SDN & SAP all at a time, without even knowing what I can do there..,
When I got a job afterwords I was doing the job and never seen SDN page for many months,
when I came to know that of we have doubts we can post at SDN. then started requesting help,
I posted only a little, I didnot got the proper response. on that day I decided,
still there are some places where we cannot get help on time and there will be people waiting to get help,
Why cant I put some of my efforts to help others.
Then I searched some topic by Topic in SDN topic by Topic I used to read threads just for knowledge.
when I feel my self comfort for contributing, I started contibuting...!
If you haven't read it, take a look first, so you can understand where things are now.
I dont know where things are now. But these in this thread I mentioned clearly what I seen from the day I started contributing.
I searched with the terms of 'Rules for replying', The results are not as I expected, and this link has subject as
"O SDN, where art thou?" So it dosent hit my in the list.
Like everybody until a certain stage I am also rushing for points.
But I most cases I never tried to copy paste answers. If I done some then that is just to point it myself some day,
I have no hopes or no intrest on the points...! This was discussed with Rob & Matt, at my inital contribution where my points are 36.
From that day till date I have changed a lot to myself.
Everyone cannot change like me because they are not like me & And I dont even expect that...!
I will be online almost 6-8Hrs a day, Not even getting intrest to see the forums just because of the co-contributors.
My only point is I am just requesting to a co-contributor,
Clearly In a example : Lets say contributor has replied to a thread, and if you know that is a correct solution,
please dont reply any more, If you have a better solution than that, then only reply,
Even there is one reply in the thread not a matter, if correct answer leave that query.
If still error persists, Show up with your Idea's...
Dont let down the contributor, by copying his reply and editing and pasting(edit only if incorrect).
I am just looking for this one exactly to circulate between ourselfs.
For this we a little support from moderators to circulate(may be as a rule or may be as a mail to them)
You may say again how many mails we have to send, It dosent matter, one mail to one person one time,
and +ve factors will show up definetly.
A real contributor always understand what I am talking about, but some one who hunts for points will never.
I am really sorry if I am troubling with my doubts & requests,
    If so, Pleae forgive me,,
    Thanks & regards,
    Dileep .C
