Protection Mode Vs init file settings

Dear Friends,
In 11g databgurad i am setting the Protection mode of Primary to : Maximum protection at the DB level(so that it uses sync)
But while defining in init file if i say ASYNC for standby DB as mentioned below
LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2= 'SERVICE=boston ASYNC
Then will setting will take precednce , SYNC from maximum protection mode defined at DB level (or) ASYNC which is defined in init file?
(or) will it throw error if there is any mismatch?
Regards,
DB

you can confirm this in the alert log and v$database on the standby DB
SQL> alter database SET STANDBY DATABASE TO MAXIMIZE PROTECTION;
Database altered.
Perform a log switch at the primary DB i.e alter system switch logfile;
SQL> select PROTECTION_MODE from v$database;
PROTECTION_MODE
MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE
SQL> SYNC is a major attributes you need to set, if you want MAXIMUM PROTECTION mode.

  • Trouble with Protected Mode whitelisting and file links

    Our system details first: Adobe Reader 11.0.7, Windows 7 SP1 32bit, IE9
We have some documents that contain URLs (file://...) which point to other documents (mostly PDF and DOCX files) on the local harddrive or on remote network shares. Those links work perfectly fine when Protected Mode is turned off - you click on it, IE opens and displays the document (PDF) or prompts you to open/download it (DOCX). As soon as you turn on Protected Mode those links stop working completely and I can see an access denied entry in the AdbeReaderBroker.log. All as expected.
Where it get's weird is that the links still don't work even if I whitelist nearly everything. I can click on them and nothing happens, they don't even generate an entry in the broker logfile anymore. Just so you have an idea, here is my current whitelist used for testing:
    FILES_ALLOW_ANY = \??\C:\*
    PROCESS_ALL_EXEC = \??\C:\*
    REG_ALLOW_ANY = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Adobe*
    REG_ALLOW_ANY = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe*
    REG_ALLOW_ANY = HKEY_CURRENT_USER\*
And here's everything contained in the broker logfile (including when I click on links):
[07:07/15:29:57] Adobe Reader Protected Mode Logging Initiated
    [07:07/15:29:57] Found custom policy file: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\ProtectedModeWhitelistConfig.txt
    [07:07/15:29:57] Adding custom policy: FILES_ALLOW_ANY = \??\C:\*
    [07:07/15:29:57] Adding custom policy: PROCESS_ALL_EXEC = \??\C:\*
    [07:07/15:29:57] Adding custom policy: REG_ALLOW_ANY = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Adobe*
    [07:07/15:29:57] Adding custom policy: REG_ALLOW_ANY = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe*
    [07:07/15:29:57] Adding custom policy: REG_ALLOW_ANY = HKEY_CURRENT_USER\*
So the policies get applied, Protected Mode isn't blocking anything anymore, the links still don't work and now I'm out of ideas. I also tried all of this with the Trust Manager setting "Allow opening of non-PDF file attachments with external applications" turned on, same situation.
I hope someone here can point me in the right direction, maybe I'm missing something completely obvious here.
Edit for people having the same issue:
After some further testing it became clear that the issue only occurs when the PDF containing the hyperlinks is created using the built in PDF generator of Word 2010. PDFs generated with Adobe Acrobat Professional work just fine and can also open the applications directly without opening IE first. I'm not sure about the exact difference in the generated link, Word seems to generate file:// URLs which I can access with right click -> Copy Link Location, something that's not possible for the links generated by Acrobat.

Maybe the information http://samwel.tk/laptop_mode/faq might help.  Particularly #3 and onward.

substitute packer with yaourt or do manually if you wish so.

  • Opening a PDF file from a share that contains a reparse point in protected mode fails

With adobe reader 10 or above and with protected mode turned on, we are unable to read a PDF file from a shared location if it contains a reparse point. I understand that turning off protected mode will resolve the issue, but that does not help us.
Using filemon, we can see that adobe is opening the file and ignoring the reparse point, so we know that's why it's failing. Is there any way (aside from turning off protected mode) to get this to work?

    Hi,
is the next part of the code correct.
What i mean is packing of the attachment, finding out the size of pdf file and doc type as PDF.
You can also try below link..

  • Unable to save PDF - Internet Explorer Protected Mode "A file error has occurred"

    Hi,
I hope you can all assist! Here's the detail:
Reader XI (11.0.06) and deployed as physical installation (.msi)
    Windows 7 x64 Enterprise
    Internet Explorer 8 & 9
Opening PDF's from HTTP & HTTPS locations
Users are unable to save the PDF file to their chosen location (network share or local directory) "A file error has occurred".
When the Internet Explorer Protected Mode is switched off, users are able to save the file to their chosen location.
Is this is specific functionality of IE Protected Mode whereby the ActiveX control is being restricted.
Is this due to Enhanced security within the Adobe Reader 11.0.06 application?
Our current Reader version (9.3.0) is able to save files from unprotected locations, so this is creates a problem justify upgrading.
    Do anyone have any suggestions?
Look forward to any assistance or suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Simon.

    Hi Simon,
How are you saving the file (right click or from File menu)?  Does the problem happen with any PDF file?  Does the problem go away if  you turn "Enable Protected Mode at startup" from Reader (Preferences > Security (Enhanced)?

  • How do I change the downloaded file default from protected mode

Word and pdf show up in protective mode - how do I change the default to allow editing?

    Hello,
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Go to ''Tools'' > ''Options'' (or ''Firefox'' > ''Options'').
#In the Options window, select the ''Applications'' tab.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right handside you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • Applets in IE7 Protected mode ON is not writing files in %APPDATA% folder.

It seems like applets are having less permission to access files in IE7 running on Windows Vista. It is even stricter in Protected mode On.
We have couple of applets which write files in %APPDATA% folder under a particular directory. This was not working in Protected mode ON, but was writing the files in Protected mode OFF. We used System.getenv() to get the environment variable and constructed the full path.
Now the problem is that FileOutputStream.write() does not write the file in the given location. The location is some thing like this "C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\<company name>\<file name>". There is NO exception thrown from the code. We checked that FileOutputStream.getFD().valid() is returning 'true'.
Any idea what could be the reason for this strange behavior? I tried with both JRE 1.5_06 and 1.6_01, both are failing.

brewzer, thank you for brining this to our attention. I want to make sure that we are able to keep some memory space on your tablet. Can you please describe to me what kind of errors you get when you try to move the pictures or videos over to the SD Card? Please keep me posted.

  • Cannot read a file using Acrobat SDK in Adobe Reader 11 when Enable Protected Mode is checked

I wrote a plugin using Acrobat SDK which reads a temporary file created by another program in TEMP folder. In Adobe 10, plugin can read the temporary file and everything works. In Adobe Reader 11, plugin fails to read the temporary file when Enable Protected Mode option is checked. When I uncheck this option, everything works fine. Our customers are concerned about disabling this option. Please let me know if there is a workaround for this issue without unchecking the option. Thank you.

  • Protected Mode Settings

    Hello,
We are currently using Click-Once to deploy our software and it seems like Protected Mode is blocking our .application from running.
I was curious what settings "Protected Mode" actually changes for the block to occur?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
The article doesn't tell me which settings Protected Mode actually changes.  It just says it stops malware.
What settings does it change if any?
Can you explain it more clearly ? I am not able to understand what you want exactly.

  • How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

Starting with Flash Player 11.3, a protected mode was added as a new security enhancement for Firefox 4.0 and greater on Windows Vista and higher.  This security enhancement is designed to limit the impact of attacks launched from malicious Flash content (SWF files).  For additional details on this feature, please see Inside Flash Player Protected Mode for Firefox
After reviewing this FAQ, we'd appreciate if you would take a minute to let us know if it helped.  There is a link to a two question survey at the bottom of the page.
While we believe this feature is fully tested and reliable, if you encounter issues with Firefox we recommend the following troubleshooting steps.
Problem: Flash content does not appear, YouTube display errors such as "An error occurred.  Please try again later.", or Flash video will not function properly.
Solution: If RealPlayer is installed on your system, please disable the RealPlayer Browser Record plug-in.
    Launch RealPlayer
Click the RealPlayer icon in the upper left corner of the window and choose Preferences.
Choose Download & Recording from the left hand panel
Uncheck "Enable Web Download & Recording for these installed browsers"
    Click OK and close RealPlayer
    Restart Firefox
If you are viewing this page in Firefox and Flash Player is not working, please click here for an HTML5 version of this video: YouTube HTML5 HD Link
Problem: RealPlayer is not installed, Flash Player crashes in Firefox
    Solution:
Troubleshoot Extensions and Add-Ons by launching Firefox in Safe Mode
    1. Exit Firefox
    2. Click Start > Run
    3. Type the following then press [Enter]:
         firefox.exe -p
    4. Click Continue in Safe Mode
    5. Attempt to reproduce the problem
If the problem does not occur in safe mode, please try to isolate it down to an individual plug-in.
    1. Exit Firefox
    2. Re-launch Firefox
    3. Click Firefox > Add-Ons > Extensions
    4. Click Disable on all of your extensions
    5. Attempt to reproduce the problem, while enabling each extension until you can reproduce the issue
If the issue persists in Safe-Mode, please continue with the steps below:
Some users have indicated that random crashing stops when clearing their Firefox profile.  This step will allow you to temporarily test with a clean set of Firefox preferences, without losing your preferences.
    Exit Firefox
    Click Start > Run
Type the following then press [Enter]: firefox.exe -p
    Click Create Profile
    Click Next
In the Enter new profile name dialog, type "Test"
    Click Finish
Select Test and click Start Firefox
Use Firefox as normal.  If the problem goes away, clearing your Firefox preferences, or migrating the important settings (bookmarks, etc) to a clean Profile may be a good permanent solution.
If the problem persists, switch back to your old profile by doing the following:
    Exit Firefox
    Click Start > Run
Type the following then press [enter]:firefox.exe –p
Choose your old account (typically "default")
    Click Start Firefox
Solution: Try a clean Windows profile (You must be an Administrator to complete this step.  If your user account is not an admin type, skip to the next section for instructions on reporting a bug.)  Creating a new Windows user will rule out any account-specific preferences that may be enabled on your system.
Create a user account in Vista
Create a user account in Windows 7
Use Flash Player normally.  If the problem goes away, this indicates a compatibility problem, either with software you have installed or with preferences set on your account.
    Reporting a bug:
    Please file bugs at bugbase.adobe.com.
Choose "Adobe Flash Player" as the product
Choose "Browser Integration" as the product area
Please provide as much information as possible with what you were doing before the crash and an exact URL where the crash occurred.
If available, please attach your Firefox crash logs to the bug using the Attachments field.
Show hidden files and folders. For more details, see the instructions for the operating system that you use: Vista and Windows 7.
Crash logs are located at C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\
Logs will be located in either the pending or submitted folder, depending on whether or not you submitted the crash report to Mozilla.
    Last resort
Finally, if these problems are blocking you from using Flash Player we recommend, as a last resort, you either revert back to Flash Player 11.2 or temporarily disable Protected Mode.  We strongly recommend that Protected Mode is manually enabled once this issue is resolved.
To revert to a previous version of Flash Player, please see this FAQ: How do I revert to a previous version of Flash Player?
To disable Protected Mode, add the following line to your mms.cfg file located in:
    Windows 32bit: C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash
    Windows 64bit: C:\windows\syswow64\macromed\flash
    ProtectedMode=0
If the mms.cfg file does not exist, create one using any standard text editor (e.g.. notepad)
Depending on your operating system, you might need to first save the mms.cfg file to a writable location (such as your documents or desktop folder) and then copy the file into the destination folder using Windows Explorer.
To re-enable Protected Mode, simply remove the line from the mms.cfg file.
Hopefully this FAQ helped you.  Please let us know by taking a minute to fill out this simple survey.

  • Word attachments in Outlook 2013, Protected Mode broken

I have a client using Office 2013 Pro on Windows Server 2008 R2 (Citrix XenApp).  When they try to open Word attachments, the file tries to open
in Word's Protected View but crashes with the error:
"There is insufficient memory or disk space. Word cannot display the requested font"
Troubleshooting included turning off antivirus and antispam products, sending different types of files (doc, docx, xls, xlsx) via email or copying over
VPN, only the emailed files had a problem, turning off Protected View.
Turning off Protected View allows the files to open without error, but turning it off (as recommended by other sites I've researched) seems like more of
a workaround rather than a solution.
I believe the issue started after a batch of Office 2013 updates that were applied on the 14th.  There are too many to reasonably test removing them
one by one and since this is a production server, the reboots would floor the client for a day, at least.
I appreciate any guidance you can provide.  Thanks!
     -KK

    Thank you for the response.
Did you save the Word attachments to locale disk to open by using Protected View mode, does this issue exist? If the file was received as an Outlook attachment and your computer policy has defined the sender as unsafe, the Word attachments will
    be open in
    Protected View mode.
Saving the attachment first before opening it allows the file to be opened without crashing Word.  This doesn't resolve the issue, however, as my client doesn't want to have to save every attachment.
As the error message, there are a couple of things that can cause this.
    A corrupted normal.dot template
    A corrupted printer driver
Some sort of third part add in
Thus, let's start to try and that is replacing the normal.dot template. We could search
normal.dot in PC. After you finding normal.dot, rename it old.dot and restart your computer. Re-open Word and it will create a new normal.dot template, which is what Word uses as a default blank document.
Would a corrupted normal.dot effect only opening attachments from within Outlook?  Isn't normal.dot global (all users)?  This is a Citrix XenApp server and only this user is experiencing the problem.
Following this, have the client open the Word attachments on Webmail(OWA) instead of opening it from Outlook Client, does this issue exist?
If there's no such issue when opening the attachment from Webmail, this issue may be related to Outlook Client.
Like saving the document from Outlook, opening from OWA works fine as well.  This is expected since they are essentially the same process (save, open).
Please check the Protected View setting in Word 2013:
    Click File > Options.
    Click Trust Center >
Trust Center Settings > Protected View.
Uncheck Enable Protected View for Outlook attachment
I've done this already as a work-around, but I'd suspect that Protected View is there for a reason so simply disabling it to resolve this issue isn't a proper 'solution'.  I didn't mention in the original post, but I've also tried Outlook in Safe Mode
with the same results.  Thanks for any additional help you can provide!

  • Acrobat Reader X Disable Protection mode

    Hi All,
i need some help with this freaky Acrobat Reader X version.
We have currently  ~1000 computers with different old versions of AR (form 6 to 9)
We need to upgrade to 10.0.1 version all PC's
Will use SCCM for distributing the package.
OK... everything here seems good but ... a lot of problems and erros appear.
First we've installed on test group of 10 pc's the AR 10.0.0
all users start complainig that they can't open the pdf's from our file servers.
Solution - bring the patch 10.0.1
After that all users start complaining that they can't print - Windows Error - Acrobat need to be closed !
    Solution - Protection mode disabled.
    My questions :
    1. How can I distribute both the Package of Acrobat and the update together with SCCM
All my tries and reaings failed !!!
i've try different methods and no success
    msiexec /i /q \\server\d$\Workstation Baseline\AcrobatReaderX\AcroRead.msi TRANSFORMS="AcroRead.mst" PATCH=\\server\d$\Workstation Baseline\AcrobatReaderX\adbeRdrUpd1001_Tier1.msp
this do not work for me This is in SCCM program
    2. How can i disable through Adobe Wizard the Protection Mode ?
I know how to do it manually but is not acceptable this way - i can't communicate with 1000 users to do this manually
I know how to disable it from registry with GPO , but i can't disable it before installation, also i can't disable it on all PC's after installation, because it will take several days to complete for all pc's and this "hole" of some days will stop the work of our end-users.
Any fresh ideia is wellcome. Also any help
    Thanks

    hey,
had similar issues with protection mode.
found we can do it 2 ways, 1. via registry entry, or 2. via an ADM.
sorry cannot remember the referenced posts for the fixes below...
we use the adm so that users cannot change it, and so that updates dont reset it.
note that the adm has only a few settings, and i dont know the code for any other settings.
    1. - REG method:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\FeatureLockDown]
    "bProtectedMode"=dword:00000000
REM: Above line Disables Protected Mode on startup
    2. - ADM Template method
please note, just copy and paste into a text file and rename as .adm.
remember that on the last section of the code below, change the "YOUR HEADER HERE" bit to what you want to use to find it in the GPO manager once you add the template.

  • When opening a PDF in IE 10 with Enhanced Protection Mode it displays "This website wants to run acropdf.dll"

I am running my application which requires JRE on Internet Explorer 10. Since the IE need to run in 64 bit mode, we have enabled the "Enhanced Protection Mode" in Security option of Internet Options in Advanced tab. But my application also opens
up PDF in the browser, when the page with PDF is invoked it displays "The webpage wants to run 'AcroPDF.dll'. If you trust this site, you can disable Enhanced Protection Mode for this site to run the control.(Disable)(Always Ignore)".  And on
clicking any option the PDF is not displayed.
We would not be able to disable the  Enhanced Protection Mode as the 64 Bit JRE would not be invoked for other part of the application.
Please let me know how to resolve this issue.

Configure Adobe Reader to not use a Web Browser to open PDF documents... (see the Adobe.com for admx files to apply this setting by group policy) (
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/392489 )
Start>Adobe Reader>Edit>Preferences>Internet>uncheck "Display PDF in browser"
It seems that Adobe have recently changed the location of that setting in Adobe Reader (at least on 11.0.4).  They've now hidden it under Edit > Accessibility > Setup Assistant > Then on page 5 of 5, there's a tick box to toggle 'Display PDF
    documents in the Web Browser'.
However, it doesn't work like it used to though, as it won't just open a PDF in Adobe Reader instead of the browser.  It will instead ask to disable Enhanced Protected Mode to run acroPDF.dll.
And if you try disabling the Adobe PDF reader add-on in Manage Add-ons to try and force it to open in Reader, then when you visit a PDF link, you just get the same blank page (shown below) with the black crossed out circle in the top left, but without the
message bar at the bottom of the window.  The only way to open the PDF is to either turn off Enhanced Protected Mode and allow acroPDF.dll to run or if there's an original link to the PDF, right click and select 'save-as'.
I think it's about time Adobe released an x64 PDF viewer...  Or at least there should be an open/save dialogue box in IE.
If you've got Reader 11.0.4 installed, you can try it for yourself with this PDF link:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/pdf/adobe_reader_reference.pdf
(The below screenshot is with 'Display PDF documents in the Web Browser' UN-ticked in Adobe Reader settings, so it should open in Reader instead.  But it doesn't.  And with the Reader add-on disabled you get the same page, but without the
    message at the bottom.)
