Proxies and consolidate projects in FCP X 10.1.4

What is the best workflow to edit sith proxies and consolidate  the correct way to make sure a project will come back to life in the future.
Thanks.

You only should edit with proxy if your mac can't keep up with the original or optimized media.
And you certainly do NOT need to create both optimized and proxy media for everything - that is huge waste of disk space.
That said, it is very easy to switch to or from using proxy: just click the little triangle at the top right of the viewer and choose either Proxy or Optimized/Original.
Don't forget: if you edit in proxy, switch back to Optimized/Original before you export, or you will be exporting in lower quality, smaller size proxy.
The last part of your question is more open, but to keep it simple: as long as you keep your media inside your libraries, which is the default, when you are finished with a production you can just store the library wherever you want. If you needed back, just open it.
I suggest creating one library per production, so as to keep things manageable. Of course, this depends on each editor's workflow, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

  • Deleting project tabs - and whole projects in FCP

Hi, I am in the process of cleaning up my hard-drive of finished projects and want to make as muh space as possible. With finished projects which I have backup and hard copy, how do I erase the projects from FCP, or at least avoid having them take up undue space....
    Thanks

Delete them. Although, since the project files don't take up much space at all, I'd recommend keeping those intact.

  • FCP crashes, and opening and saving projects take too much time

Since my upgrade to FCP 5.0.4 I’m having trouble on several aspects of FCP.
I am using an Xserve raid storage, connected via fiberchannel to an Xserve with 10.4.4.
The editing computers are connected via fiberchannel and Xsan to the central storage.
FCP runs on an Apple G5, and my projects run from an external disk described as above. Al the other FCP scratch disk settings are also set on the external disks.
    Example:
I’m using the FCP 5.0.4 with the multi-clip mode, and one of the consequences is, that my projects become relatively large. The larger they become, the longer it takes to open (up to 10 minutes) it and to save it (up to 2 minutes). Together with these problems, FCP crashes a lot.
I set my “auto-save” at an interval of 15 minutes, to prevent to loose a lot of work, but when it takes 2 minutes to “auto-save” each time, I loose a lot of time.
So when my project was 224 MB, I made a copy of my project, and opened it from a local drive. Opening the project took also 10 minutes. But when it was open, “saving” the project took only 15 seconds, instead of 2 minutes. The “auto-save” was still on the external scratch disk. “Auto-saving” still took 2 minutes. So I set the “auto-save” on a local scratch disk, and after that, it took only 15 seconds. Opening the project still took 10 minutes. And the FCP didn’t crash frequently.
My conclusion would be that the problems have something to do with the size of the project in combination with the connection with the external scratch disks. Is this correct? If yes, how do I solve this.
And if not, what else could it be?
    Out of memory
Another problem occurred when my project was 327 MB. I had a multi-clip sequence of 100 minutes, with 4 camera angles and a lot of cuts and effects in it. When I tried to “nest” the sequence, it didn’t work and got the message: “out of memory” . Then FCP crashed.
When I opened the project again (it took 10 minutes), I could not save it anymore: ”out of memory”. So now I cannot work with this project anymore.
    How do I solve this?
Is my project or sequence too big?
    Another crash example
FCP crashed sometimes, when I switch my “Ëxternal Video” setting from “Blackmagic 8 bit” to “Firewire PAL”. Could this have something to do with it the problems I previously described?
Can anyone help me with these problems?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I've run into a simliar problem and I believe I traced the issue down to the number of files on the drive. A drive I was using had over 600,000 files on it. Opening projects took 5+ minutes, saving took 2+, for a 15 minute simple project.
See if that is your issue.
Edit: 600,000 files on the scratch/capture disk.

  • Is it possible to start a project in FCE and finish it in FCP?

    Hi all!
I am at home trying to work on a school project and was wondering if anyone had experience with working on a project in FCE then sending it to FCP to finish.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum.
You can open your FCE project in FCP, but, once you save it in FCP, you can't take it back to FCE.

  • Problem importing Motion project into FCP (images 'wobbly' and 'jaggedy')

I'm at wit's end here. I did a short 10 second intro for a press reel in Motion that is pretty basic and looks good in Motion (it's just images from the show flying across the screen, with a cloud emitter as background). The problem is that when I import it into Final Cut Pro, the images get all jittery and wobbly. It looks as if they are going in and out of different interlacing stages, which makes no sense.
The images were taken from the theater's website, and I have have tried them both in JPG and PSD formats. They are all being scaled down from the original size a touch after I import them into Motion (would that be the problem? Didn't think to try that...). As I said, they look fine and clear in Motion, but when I export into a Quicktime movie or render it and play it back in Final Cut Pro, they get all jaggedy/wobbly (for lack of a better technical term). Stills exported from the Motion file look fantastic in Photoshop (and in Final Cut Pro when I use them as background) but a paused image in Final Cut Pro looks very jagged.
I've tried everything I can think of, and even upped all the render settings in the project, to no avail. Any ideas/suggestions?

Sure. I'm uploading two files. One at www.jonathanfrank.com/FCPTest.mov, contains two 10 second movies back to back. The first clip is the project I created from scratch, the second clip is a test I did using a Motion template that I was 'inspired' by. Both were exported from Motion w/Field set to 'none' and export settings set to 'animation' Both looked pretty good when the exported file was opened in Quicktime. I imported the files and rendered them in FCP (and noticed that Field got set to Low/Even along the way somehow) and then exported them into Quicktime via FCP.
I also am uploading the original file of my project that I exported from Motion to see the difference at www.jonathanfrank.com/poetintro1.mov
Due to the size, it's not as easy to see the 'jitter' It was really noticeable when I imported the Travel template sans photos (so you just saw the grey "replace here" images with the circles and grids). It looks passable in the movies, but when Printed to Video, played in FCP (or played in the full-sized format in Quicktime) it's a lot more obvious what I'm talking about.
Basically, the motion just isn't smooth. It's very jagged and jittery, and the definition is dreadful.
Thanks for all your help and interest, by the way. And hope this

I uploaded the project to vimeo from FCP X, and the next day when I tried to use FCPX, they were gone, the events are gone from fcp and my ext hd, the project is still on the ext hd, but it won't recognize in FCP X even though my ext HD shows in the project tab. anybody any clue how to bring it back?

    Thanks for the reply Andy.
No, I don't have identical projects on a second drive, only saving to the movies folder on internal HD. The files and media save there fine, but fcp doesn't seem to recognise them the next day, just opens with one new untitled event and no projects.
I have tried saving to en external HD tonight and will see if the problem happens again with this set up when I restart tomorrow.
But I should be able to save to internal HD, so something is going wrong...

It's because the PowerMac G5 had HUGE bandwidth with a fat BUS on each processsor so they could run hard, hot and heavy.
It's not so with the Intel processors which are multi-core and share a common bus thus bottleneck.
The newer Intel processors can do more work on the CPU, but when it comes to in/out they are s-l-o-w.
I've had a wickedly fast dual processor (not dual core) G5, RAID 0 pair of 10,000 RPM drives as boot and a fast video card, I could do a lot very very fast.
You'll likely have to upgrade to Final Cut X to get more cores utilized, prepare to cry a little bit, Apple is working on the features they stripped out of it to make amends to pro users who complained loudly. (all over TV too)

  • Substandard renders and .motn projects that crash FCP.

On rendering out video from Motion (first version) I am warned that almost every object on my timeline is 'too large to render and will be cropped'. I'm working on anamorphic D1 projects and some of the objects it is telling me are too large are things like 720x576 video clips and even 16 pixel high caveats with no effects. I can get a render using the 'export' command in Motion but for some reason these are exceptionally jagged and have no sub-pixel supersampling (I've got anti-aliasing turned on but this doesn't help a great deal and the jagged edge are far too obvious to use for broadcast purposes). I'm rendering Uncompressed 4:2:2 and both project and render settings are upper-field first.
I have tried simply importing the .motn projects into FCP which for some reason manages to render objects much smoother than Motion's native renderer - but unfortunately all of the projects contain particle effects which seem to crash FCP every time it comes across them. Going back to Motion to render these sections is no good as it seems to render particle effects with random jumps and missing frames in them.
Any tips for getting decent quality smooth anti-aliased renders from Motion into Final Cut Pro as I'm not having any luck so far and I've got nine television commercials due for delivery Monday morning - yikes!
    Any suggestions most welcome!
    Cheers,
    Tom

Though I realize Motion 2 isn't available as a separate item anymore, it is absolutely worth getting as far as speed and performance.
I remember thinking that on the same hardware it felt like it was 2x as fast.
Definitely check out the linked Motion Smarts article - it's a great explanation or introduction to the specific problems you can have working with a GPU-based FX program like Motion. This stuff matters - if you can master optimizing your projects by design Motion will be a nice addition to your toolbox.

  • Managing Events and/or Projects With Disk Images

I came across this method of managing Events and Projects a while ago. I finally got around to giving it a try. Personally, I really like this method.
    It's simple.
It keeps things very well organized.
It's easy to open only the project or events that you want.
It's easy to consolidate and back up once you're done.
It  takes some workload off FCP X by not having to always open up all your Events and Projects.
So, I thought I would share this for those of you who were not already aware of it.
This is my workflow: (based on the link below)
I create a Disk Image (named for the Event/Project).
(Note: There are two places to create the name, I use both, keep them the same)
    I open up FCP X.
I typically put only one Event on this Disk Image.
I then reference whatever Media I need in this Event.
I usually don't bother to copy the media. (except when I'm done and I archive it)
You can create multiple Events, if you feel the need for additional organization.
Then I create however many Projects I need.
(since Projects equates to Sequences from prior FCP versions)
I have a unique Disk Image for each Event/Project that I work on.
    To use them ...
First, always make sure FCP X is not running.
Locate the Disk Image in finder.
Double click on the Disk Image and it will Mount on your desktop.
(assuming it's not already mounted on your desktop)
Open up FCP X and it will load the Event(s)/Project(s) in the Disk Image.
If you don't want to work on an Event/Project in FCP X (make sure FCP X is not open), in Finder, simply Eject the Disk Image.
Now when you open FCP X, it won't be there.
Its not gone, but since it's not mounted on the desktop, FCP X simply doesn't see it.
To get it back (obviously quit FCP X first) simply double click the Disk Image in Finder and it remounts.
Open FCP X and you can see it's back.
You can open (double click to mount) as many Event/Project Disk Images as you want.
Just make sure you mount and un-mount disk images when FCP X is not running.
If find this to be a great workflow.
Many thanks to Steve Martin of Riple Training for posting this method.

Re the final commercial spot.  What I am getting at is if all my media is optimized and therefore in ProRes, and I export in ProRes using the current settings, then shouldn't the media needed to rebuild the project be the same or close to what an exported Quicktime would have been?
Perhaps the notion of "used clips only" is not what it says then.  I took that to be the "media managed" feature otherwise why is that wording there.  I guess "used" actually refers to all of the media for the project and associated events rather than just for the project.  This is misleading because the DUPLICATE operation and menu prompt only appears as a result of requesting an action on the project item.
There are aliases in my original event folder, but before I started this process tried to get FCPX to consolidate media for the project and it already was according the app.  Truth is, some of the media is outside of the FCPX required folders.  So it's strange that it says it's consolditated, but it's not and yet in duplicating the project it moves the references to the new volume only to point back to the old volume.
So my next question would be: Is there no feature to back up only what's needed to rebuild the final project (edit) reliably.  Moving the project moves everything.  According to the FCP manual, it seems using the Duplicate feature is the way I should be archiving.  However if by "used clips only" FCP X means all media and refrerenced events, then I guess there's nothing for me in here.  However then, whey would there be an option (after choosing duplicate project) an option to Duplicate Project and  referenced events.  If "used clips only" means all media, then there's no difference between the 2nd and 3rd Duplicate Project options.
    Thanks Tom.

  • Can't open a project in FCP 7

    Hello:
I can't open a FCP 7 project. Every time I try to open it, the project get stuck at 2% and then I received  a notice that FCP 7 is not responding. The project is at an external hard drive. I run some tests and the drive is fine. I can open other projects that are stored in the same drive, but not that particular one.
Although I have the project back up at another external drive, there is some information that wasn't backed up and I need to retrieve it urgently.
What should I do? Could it be a corrupted file?
    Thanks for your help!!
    Rolando

First thing to try is resetting your preferences.  The best way is using Digital Rebellion's preference manager.  It's free
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Digital Rebellion also has a Project Repair App, part of Pro Maintenance Tools.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/promaintenance/
    There's a free trial.
If these two things fail, there may be a corrupt clip causing the problems.  If you take your media drive offline and try launching the project, it may load.  You can then slowly reconnect the media until you find the problem.  Sometimes, just going thru this process will solve it.
You can also try an autosave version of the project.  FCP automatically saves back up versions of the project as you work on it.  The default interval is 30 minutes.  Just do a finder search for autosave to find the folder.

  • I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio t

I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio tracks - specifically one stereo pair to be t1&t3, the other stereo pair to be t2&t4. This is the standard way requested by an international distributor of tv programmes. I understand how to set the sequence in FCP to output 4 audio tracks - either 2 stereo pairs (1&2, + 3&4), or 4 discrete tracks. But how do I then output this as a QT file?
The manual tells me that to export multiple audio tracks, File>Export>QT Movie has it's Config pop-up menu in the Audio Settings area of the General tab of the Sequence Settings. Well, that's set for 4 discrete channels, but the QT export settings only allow for 2 mono or 1 stereo output, and that's what I get when I try it. What it says in the manual just doesn't happen.
Exporting via Compressor, on the other hand, has an abundance of choices of 4-track outputs, none of which are labelled as anything resembling 'discrete'. Would any of those 4.0 settings suffice? Or am I likely to get myself into difficulties further down the line? As I am monitoring for this task on a 2-track audio system, I cannot confirm exactly what I am getting when I use any of those settings.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    John

Call me naive, but I've not heard of splitting the stereo pairs like this before.
What broadcaster? (perhaps one of our EU regulars will drop in...)
You can do all sorts of pairing but it is coincident tracks pairing- eg 1/2 + 3/4
    Sorry I can't offer anything.

  • Newbie Question: Why can't I open my iMovie project in FCP?

    Hello all--
I'm sure some variation of this question has been posted a bajillion times but I can't seem to find the answer. At this point I feel like a damsel in distress. Rescue me?
I've been working with iMovie for about two years now and I've recently been learning Final Cut Pro to up the ante on my videos. However, when I tried to import an iMovie project into FCP yesterday, it didn't quite work. Let me explain what I did and what happened:
    1) I exported my (edited but previously unpublished) iMovie project by clicking Share>Export Final Cut XML
    2) I opened FCP and clicked File>Import>XML and then selected the XML, leaving all the boxes checked
    3) FCP imported the project as a sequence; however, the entire sequence reads "Media Offline" in the Canvas.
    4) I clicked File>Reconnect Media and the list of offline files is overwhelming. I tried my luck by clicking "locate" and going to my imovie folders to find the clips, but even when the browser allowed me to select a clip, when I double clicked it, nothing in the sequence changed - it's all still "offline."
I really don't know much about media management, I'll admit - I'm wondering if maybe iMovie saves edited clips in a folder other than the events or originals folder - maybe the edited clips become "temporary items"? I know I have a ridiculous amount of imovie cache and temporary items and I never touch them because there are just so many of them and I don't want to mess anything up. But could the files that FCP claims to be "offline" in fact be located in these "temporary" folders? I mean, I've looked everywhere else on my hard drive and nothing is working! Sorry, I am probably just confusing myself MORE (and you), but maybe SOMEONE will know what in the world I should do
    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the family. I don't think many of us have ever used iMovie so your post might be more quickly answered in that forum.
My suggestion is to forget trying to move the project. Rebuild it in FCP. The exercise will teach you much more about your new software than fighting XML.
If you don't feel like doing that, try a smaller iMovie project, something with only two or three clips and one dissolve.
The larger issue is probably how iMovie stores its captured media which is completely different from how FCP does it. And the format is different. FCP does not, IIRC, view iMovie's default dvstream codec. You will want to export your movie clips as DV.

  • DVD authoring after editing project with FCP X

FCP X has extremely limited DVD authoring options within it. Can't put more than one short movie on a disc, only two menu templates to choose from, etc. So my question is what do I use to author a DVD after editing projects with FCP X? I know I need to use Compressor to set chapter points, etc., but what do I use to build the DVD menu and burn the DVD? I certainly hope I am not limited to iDVD only, which is not really a pro application, and I gather that DVD Studio Pro is no longer being sold. Amazingly, I asked this question at a One-to-One session at an Apple Store and the guy there suggested Adobe Encore ... I was totally shocked! Does anyone have an answer to all this?

Encore is very good, but you have to buy PPro to get it, you could look on eBay for a copy of DVDSP. It does look like Apple will not be offering a Pro Level DVD authoring package anymore, it's a shame as DVDSP works very well still and they could have just offered it as a standalone.

  • Can't open fcp project file - fcp not responding

starts to open project but gets to 23% and freezes fcp...project is being stored on a lacie 250gig protable hd with firewire. never had this issue after tons of work. tried going to a autosave version but tried several and they freeze up fcp
any ideas short of moving all the media to another drive and starting a new project (I was just about to start cutting this project today).

    Welcome to the forum!
Post the version of FCP you're running.
Try opening a new project file, then importing the captured clips into it... might fix this... If you trash your preferences for FCP found in the user/library/preferences/FCP User data folder, you can just click on the application and it won't try to open the last project file.
Can you open earlier project files OK?
