Proxy for pacman- download packages once for all machines

Hello.
I have a network with several machines and a server, all running Arch.
The server is also the internet gateway.
At the moment, all machines download all the packages they need independantly of each other, so many packages are downloaded several times. I could have one machine update all packages and then run a feed from /var/lib/pacman for all the others to update from, but then I must somehow make sure that all needed packages are on that machine. If I get another machine to install a new package it will either- not find it, or download it from the net and store it locally. Then any other machine that wants it will again be downloading it's own copy.
What pacman needs is some sort of proxy server. I run this on my server. Then on all other machines pacman is set to use that proxy. Whenever another machine requests a package or package list, the proxy downloads it and stores it on my server, then lets the client know that it's available from my servers feed.
Maybe there is already something like this?

Local Mirror HOWTO on Wiki is an overkill. All you need is any network filesystem. I use fuse-based sshfs. There is also shfs kernel module but it was much less stable last time I tried.
Just mount /var/cache/pacman/pkg on your client machines to /var/cache/pacman/pkg on your server. Then you'll have shared package cache. It is so simple!
You can even mount /var/lib/pacman/{current,extra,testing,community,unstable} the same way. Then you can do pacman -Sy only once.
Note that you need to patch your initscripts if you want to mount right from fstab on boot. See bug report #4681 (I'm not sure if I updated it for the latest initscripts release). I hope this will be included soon.
PS: if I'll have more time I'll write a little howto on wiki.

You will need to redownload it - rentals expire and are deleted, either 30 days after renting it, or 48 hours (24 hours if you are in the US) after starting to watch it, whichever is the soonest.

Go examine your Solaris installation DVD.
The packages are there (and should have been installed with a default setup of your OS).

GPO is set for "Auto download and notify for install" but it does not work correctly on two of my servers.

I have a problem with two of my servers. I have ~200 servers which are updating fine through WSUS. The settings are as you can see "3 - Auto download and notify for install" in the GPO.
This is the correct setting. I want to achieve that I can install the updates whenever I want on these servers. On client computers there is a strict schedule with auto installs.
My GPO works fine for 98% of my servers. On two servers (a big file server and a TMG server) the settings are made as you can see in the screenshots, but the updates still get installed automatically.
I have no idea what I'm doing wrong here... It is a big problem for me that updates get installed automatically on these servers.
Although the Policy and the Registry both say 3 the server behaves like option 4 is active.
I would be very thankful for any input on how to find out what's the issue here.

Then the Windows Update Agent DID NOT install this update, and it's not really a WSUS issue.
My typical response to such a claim would be to ask you to show me in the WindowsUpdate.log where the update was installed... but it seems that request has already been answered.
The more relevant question it seems, is HOW DID these updates allegedly get installed?

Some DVDs for School, Downloaded Media Player for Mac but still...

(I apologize if this is in the wrong area, but I am sure I will be notified very quickly.)
I am in a bind. I have these Multimedia Symposium CDs. I have been trying the iDvd to see if they will play, but maybe there really is an important difference between CD and DVD. Anyway, the lace that made them told me they re DVDs.
Anyway, in the manual that came with the 12-pack, of course Mac is not listed as a "Minimum System Requirement." They are about 5 years old (I really could not afford the brand-new ones and they are exactly the same except they have not been open yet.
I was able to use StuffIt and get Windows Media Player (the latest mac version) downloaded and right away it wanted to play some DVDs and CDs on a website abut the Grammy's. Both just music and a DVD (music and video) worked great from this site.
I seem to meet all the other requirements except under Processor it says; "IBM or 100% compatible PC. This is a MacBook Pro which means it is not a PC, right? I am not up on a lot with the computer field, especially the picky stuff like this.
A little about the install of the applications. (I know how much you guys love detailed and long Posts so I will keep it to a screeching halt, or I should say I will try.) I followed Stuff'Its Instructions, which basically said just to download it to the desktop, drag and drop it in the Program (I assume the Applications and Programs folder are pretty much the same.) and you are good to go. I did not even look to see where StuffIt went, I just knew it successfully dropped into the Applications folder. After that, I have no idea about how it knows that the Windows Media Player ( (I think it is ) is the latest for Mac.
As usual with mac once I played a song on the Media Player from the desktop, I noticed over 10 icons that were not on the desktop before I started this much needed task. This is another question all together, but why does Mac put nearly everything on the desktop? I tell it to go other places, and it puts the application, folder, file, song, etc. in the place I request but it also puts it on the desktop. Something that is interesting, I opened an icon webmail.csv icon n the desktop and it is from Numbers (I think the application is called. it comes with iWork and I have never used it.) Anyway, I opened it and it was a spreadsheet of all the people I have in an old address book with about 50 columns headings and about 5 for each name filled in. Very interesting.
So, I can get the Windows Media Player to play. (BTW every video/song I try from the web it leaves an icon f that song/video on the desktop with the Media Player as the icon.)
Does anybody have any suggestions how I can get thee to play? They were new when I opened them unless they plastic wrapped the box, but I asked for a used box. Everything in the box looks clean, no scratches on any CD or DVD, but I really need to view these Multimedia CDs
I will end the Post by saying that there are 3 Required Programs listed under Required Programs. I have 2:
1. Internet Explorer version 6 or above
2. Windows Media Player 9 or above (I have the one that says it is the latest for people with a Mac)
3. Adobe Reader version 5.05 or above (I have Adobe Reader 8).

Regarding your more immediate problem, having a better idea of what you're trying to use is required before we can give you meaningful advice.
First of all, what is on the discs you are trying to use? If they are commercial discs, they must have a label of some kind that indicates what are are.
Then, when your insert a disc in your MacBook Pro's optical drive, what happens? Do you see a disc icon appear on your Desktop?

Need to populate value for a KF only once for a combination of characterist

We had a requirement for a report. wherein we need to consolidate the data of the 0FI_GL_4 datasource and a custom table.
both these sources have only 4 fields in common i.e Fiscal Year/Period; Company Code and Pool
in the custom table, for each fiscal yr/period & Pool combination, there is a unique Plan value available.
To consolidate the data, I wrote a routine in the transformation to extract data from the custom table based n the combination of Fisc yr Period, Comp Code & Pool.
However, since 0FI_GL_4 has more than 1 entry for the above mentioned combination that is GL_accounts, document number, etc; during extraction, my plan value is being extracted multiple times to the cube and hence for a fiscal yr/period, cube shows a summation value.
I want the plan value to be picked only once.. please advice

As I understand in your infocube along with the primary key of custom table one more field exists e.g. Document number and due to which the value is getting repeated over multiple lines.
Though all these records are valid but when you are running report on this cube without document number all the plan values are getting aggregated, again this behaviour is also correct.
For your reporting purpost I feel that you need to extract data from the custom table in other data target and then do the reporting on that, wherein the plan value will not be repeated.

Think I found the fix for no downloading windows updates for HP Printers problem.

I thought I'd post a new topic here. I've figured out whats gone wrong with the windows 10 updates. Someone wrote about it in his thread (I forget the thread url though), and it worked. I've done this on 2 PC's.. W7 to W10, and W8.1 to W10. What you have to do is; 1. Go to device manager. Look down the list for Printers. Open up that arrow and see if you're printer is listed there? If it's listed as Unknown Device then; 2. Go to the HP website and find the driver for your printer on there. Download it through the website / program as though you was installing your printer for the first time i.e. it should check the connection of you're printer during this process. 3. Now you have your printer driver re-installed. Go back to Device manager and check that it now appears listed by the correct name in the Printer section. 3a. If there are other unknown devices besides your printer listed, you need to delete the other unknown devices, leaving only your printer listed. 4. Go back to windows update and retry a windows update (it asks you to install the old failed ones first, so try it, expecting failure, then press the retry button. 5. If all went well, it shouldn't list anymore updates, and you're done!

I also installed 10.5.1 combo update and that took out all but the remote desktop warning.
If you have others, then be careful how you fix them.
Most of us have gotten rid of all of them using the combo updates.
Now, if only it wouldn't take 5 minutes to verify permissions ..

Video for progressive download - workflow works for CS3 but not CS4

I don't understand what I'm doing wrong with the new Flash CS4.
When I used Flash CS3 I would use the following steps to create a Flash video to view online:
Make a folder for all flash content
In the folder I put the "video".flv file encoded from Quick Time
Import the "video".flv into flash
Save the .fla with the same "video" name
Test the movie
Publish settings using the defaults
Save the flash document
I could send the folder (minus the .fla) to the webmaster to store on the server and then he could point to the "video".swf file and the video would play.
This doesn't work with CS4. I only get a green and white progress bar on the player controls with no video. I assume this means the swf can't find the flv, but they're in the same folder, and I thought the path would hold within a folder. I can't even move the folder to another computer and play the video there. It will only work on the computer where I created the files. I would appreciate any help anyone could offer. I've had to go back to Flash CS3 to correct a mistake in a previously finished video. Thanks in advance.

I did add the gaussian blur to it. Exactly like in the tutorial, I copied his steps in the video exactly, even put the exact same percentage of blur on both the alpha 1 copy and alpha 1 copy 2. both even looked exactly like his after each blur was placed. 4.5% on copy 1, 8.2% on copy 2. after this it all looks just like the instructors. its when the 2 channels are combined and it is filled with black that mine looks different. his comes out with the design white on a black background in channel view, and mine came out black with whit outline on black background on the channels. I even tried filling with white instead of black and that does not work either.
I follow the steps in the video exactly and everything matches up to that one step, if anyone has cs4 maybe they could play with a simple flat shape and try the steps and see if they get a flat outcome as well, or is it possible my version of cs4 has a bug?

This is expected. Serial numbers are platform specific and platform swaps only apply to current versions. You need to upgrade to CS6 and make the switch.

SUGGESTION: download packages at once [solved]

When pacman downloads packages, it downloads them one by one. It means:
1 - Connect
2 - Identificate
3 - set dir
4 - Download
It does this for each file. even if the server is down, it will try to connect again to the same server for each file it has to download.
My suggestion is that instead of downloading file by file, have it to download all files at once, just one connection per server.
This would avoid the connect and identificate in many of the files. It also would make much more easier to cancel an upgrade with Ctrl + C, cause it would be one cancel per server, not one cancel per file per server (in case you use wget).
And, of course, it would speed up the downloads.

The download function of pacman is programmed to check file by file. To apply a patch that uses single connection with wget (if wget supports it) the code should be cleaned a bit by putting the "check download" code in another function (before there was no need so it is was ok like it is right now), and there should be a way to specify in pacman.conf that your xfercommmand supports multiple files (%u single file, %U multiple files?)

Moto g android phone 4.4.4 does pronpt for certificate download

Anyone know how to force android phone to prompt user for certificate download? We don't experience any problems with iphones. Just select SSID , enter active directory user ID, enter password and it will prompt for certificate download. Once download and installed phone connects.... The only way I have been able to get android device to connect is save the certificate on onedrive and download it from there. I then select SSID, mschap2, enter AD id and password, select certificate and I login. Thanks

Because of security considerations, the Android agent must be downloaded from the Android marketplace site and cannot be provisioned from ISE. Cisco uploads a release candidate version of the wizard into the Android marketplace through the Cisco Android marketplace publisher account.

How do I copy artwork to iPod just once for an album, not for every track?

I don't download music. All my music is ripped from CDs that I own.
After I rip a CD, choosing "Get Album Artwork" from the Advanced menu normally works, and if not, I find the highest quality image I can from the web, and copy & paste that into the large box at the bottom left of iTunes.
It appears that iTunes stores the artwork image once for each track, not once for an album, so for example if an album has 10 tracks, the image is stored 10 times somewhere on my hard drive. This is inefficient, but not problematic.
However, when I (manually) select & drag-copy the resulting 10 tracks to my iPod, the artwork doesn't transfer along with the tracks. I then have to copy the artwork & having selected all the tracks on the iPod, paste it in. I have the "Manually manage music and videos" option selected, as I simply don't trust the automatic system. I want to supervise what is copied, when, and in what way. I don't necessarily want everything in my iTunes library on my iPod.
What concerns me is that for each album, the artwork image is stored repeatedly for each track on the iPod, like on my hard drive, not once for an album. As space will be at a premium on the iPod once I start copying more & more of my CDs across (I have only done 9 so far) the point will come where a large number of MB of space will be wasted on the iPod with duplicate artwork, which will mean that I'll be able to fit far fewer CDs on the iPod than would otherwise have been the case. The fact that I have chosen 192 kbps and the AAC Encoder for all my CD ripping also means that the iPod will fill up faster than if I'd used the standard 128 kbps and MP3 settings. I'm not prepared to go below 192 kbps though. My soon to be purchased Sennheiser CX500 earphones deserve that much!
Is there any way to force iTunes and the iPod to store the artwork only once for each album, and if there is, can this method be retrofitted to the CDs I've already copied to my iPod, or do I have to start again from scratch? I've already filled 670 MB with the 9 CDs, many of which are only 40 or 45 minutes long, so I'm already getting worried!
Alternatively, am I simply mistaken about all this? Does it only *look like* the artwork is duplicated, whereas it's actually only being stored only once?

Why don't you paste the artwork to the track in iTunes first (fast) THEN send them over to your iPod?
I already do that. Every track has the correct artwork in place before I copy it to the iPod.
I ripped about another 10 albums yesterday. Most of the albums got their artwork automatically from the iTunes store. For a few I had to get artwork from the internet.
When I rip a CD, one of 3 different things happens:
1. The album get its artwork automatically from the iTunes store, and then when I shift-click all the tracks and drag them to the iPod icon, all the artwork transfers along with the tracks.
2. As per 1, except the artwork doesn't transfer when I copy the tracks to the iPod. I then copy the artwork from one of the tracks on the Mac, then shift-click all the equivalent tracks on the iPod, and right-click in the large box at the bottom left of the screen, and click on paste.
3. The iTunes store has no artwork for the album, so I copy the artwork from an image on the internet, shift-click all the tracks on the Mac, and right-click in the large box at the bottom left of the screen, and click on paste. I then shift-click all the tracks and drag them to the iPod icon. They all copy across, but the artwork never does, so I then shift-click all the tracks on the iPod and right-click in the large box at the bottom left of the screen, and click on paste.
Pasting the artwork to the tracks, in either scenario 2 or 3 above, takes ages (often longer than copying the tracks themselves) and a progress bar appears, listing each track in order as the artwork is added to the track, accompanied by the spinning beach ball. The slowness is mostly down to using USB 1.1, but for a 20 track album, it appears that the iPod is storing the artwork 20 times, once for each track, not just once in total (for the album).
It appears that in scenario 1 though, the iPod is only storing the artwork once.

well first you go to one track, right click and press get info. you go to where it says artwork, right click the image and press copy, then you exiit out of that. then you can press ctrl and select each song you want to have that artwork. if there highlighted then its working. then right click again and press get info. then go to artwork and press paste and it should have copied the image to all of your tracks
Thanks for your input, but you've completely misunderstood my question. I know how to add artwork to tracks. What I'm trying to figure out is how to force iTunes/the iPod to only store artwork once for each album, not once for each track, even if the artwork comes manually from me finding it on the internet, not automatically via the iTunes store.

When iTunes gets the artwork, there is only one copy on your computer.
That single artwork is linked with iTunes to each song on the same album.
When you add artwork yourself, it is copied directly into the ID3 artwork tag for each song. If you have a 200kB artwork file, each song will be 200kB larger.
From what you say it sounds like there's no way to force the issue then. If you have to paste in artwork yourself, then it's one copy per track, not one per album. A serious flaw which I hope Apple will address!
Using playlists is very easy to manage what goes onto your iPod.
That's true, but I don't really have any need for playlists. I want 95% of what's in my iTunes library copied across (complete albums, with artwork). It's the remaining 5% (the odd individual track, amusing audio files, and other odds & sods) that I don't want copied. Copying things manually suits me fine, and I wouldn't consider another method unless it solved the problem that this topic is about!

Downloading package with pacman, how many threads?

When I download packages with pacman it start at slow speed and then goes up, this produces some kind of delay between downloads, especially for lots of small packages. I know this can feel like not a big problem, but you know, comparing with yum centos it seems kinda slow, seems like pacman download packages 1 thread at a time while yum it is like multi threaded because every package is downloaded consequentially without speed loss. Is there somekind of tweak for this?

Packaging Conventions for App. Developers

Looking for approaches to package organization for application developers. Everything I have read about this topic targets tool/framework developers. Grouping classes into packages seems intuitive in that case. But what about applications? Apps are not designed for reuse, so I don't have any intuition about how classes should be grouped. Whole application in one package? Separate package for each class? Does it matter? Thx.

Let me try to clarify what I was getting at. Package organization is determined at two levels: whether or not class are "related", and whether they might actually need to share data. For a library or framework, the first level is usually fairly intuitive because the code is meant to be reused; invoked or subclassed by other programmers. The package is imported to provide some particular functionality. Applications, by definition are an endpoint. In a layered design in a large environment, you'd get some reuse at the business logic level, but in general nobody is reusing this code. It's meant to be run only. So, the organizing principle of "related" tasks breaks down, at least for me. From semantic point of view, I could see architectural layers being a basis for organization, but other than that, I'm out of ideas. My inclination would be to lean toward encapsulation and put every class in its own package, unless there was an explicit need to share data. Hopefully I'm getting more and not less clear. Thanks.

ITunes 9 - Error: Unable to check for available downloads - Grrrr

I'm getting this frustrating error message while trying to download a digital booklet for Jay Z's Blueprint 3.
Furthermore, it's not allowing me to download any new content. This is very frustrating.
I'm getting the following message:
Unable to check for available downloads. An unknown error occurred (1008).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also have this same problem with iTunes 9 - I bought a song from the iTunes store successfully, but it hasn't downloaded. When I go to the "Store" menu and select "Check for available downloads" it works for a while and then gives me an error message saying:
"*Unable to check for available downloads. The network connection timed out.*
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, then try again."
It seems that there are others experiencing the same problem, any help from Apple on this one would be greatly appreciated.
I know my connection is working fine, and I can access the store with no problem - it just won't let me download stuff!
