'ps -ef' command hangs - server needs hard boot

I have a strange issue that has now occurred twice on two different physical servers running OEL 5.6. One server runs Oracle databases and one runs Netbackup.
Server one ran to 100% on the oracle binary directory. The DBA did an 'rm' to remove files and create space. At this point the server seemed to become unstable and when issueing a 'ps -ef' or an 'ls' I got partial output then the server would hang. crtl-c would not even break it. A hard reboot cleared the issue.
Server two had an issue where the Netbackup binary library went above 91% and the admin used 'rm' to clean up some large log files. There was no issue immediately, but sometime druing the night the server stopped running some processes. We could not connect through the Netbackup Admin Console. I issued the 'ps -ef' and got the same unstable response. A hard reboot was needed.
In both cases the server was not sowing any issue with cpu, memory, or io. the load was minimal. also, a 'ps -e' would work fine. In both cases the 'reboot' command never worked. I would get 'shutting down for system reboot' but it would not proceed, requiring a hard reboot.
There were messages about 'clearing orphaned inodes' during the post of each reboot.
I would like to understand what may have been occuring, if it was related to the binary filesystems becoming full and then having files removed, and what would be a method to troubleshoot as the issue is occuring.
Thank you.

Your observation that the system was unresponsive after using "ps -ef" does not necessarily mean there is a problem with the "ps" command. I think if there was such a serious problem that the ps -ef command could freeze the system then it was more commonly known. I still think your problem is rather system resource or hardware related, but of course, I could be wrong. For what it's worth, you could verify you have the latest procps package installed: http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleLinux/OL5/latest/x86_64/procps-3.2.7-18.el5.x86_64.rpm.
There can be many reasons for a system to freeze. Problems that can cause such issues can also be external, for instance, network issues, NFS issues, etc. Anyway, you could try to install strace (yum install strace) and then use strace ps -ef to get some clue where it hangs.

  • Yosemite keeps hanging and needs hard reset every night

    Problem description:
System keeps locking up from sleep. At least daily system grinds to a halt and does not respond (other than mouse) and I have to do a hard reset (power recycle) to get it back up and running. I have done a clean install of Mac OS and have had this problem regardless of what else has been installed. Tried both a firmware and SMC/PRAM reset, and still no change. Getting really tired of this!!!!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Satellite A660-18N hanging and needs hard reboot

My Satellite A660-18N hangs every other day about 2/3 times. I cannot press ctrl + alt + del and the mouse does not move. I have to hold down the power button to reboot it manually. It started about 2 weeks after I got it which was in September. I watch a lot of videos online (and offline) and usually after the screen freezes/hangs, the audio continues and stretches. I thought that this was a problem with IE8 so I switched to Google Chrome but this still continues. This problem also occurs offline. Also, after my laptop hangs, the fan speeds up so I thought it was an overheating problem. I bought a cooling mat a few days ago and the system still hangs. I'm not sure what to do now, can anyone help?
    Intel core i7 q740 @ 1.73Ghz
    4.00GB ram
    64-bit OS
    Windows 7
Nvidia Geforce 310M 512MB dedicated video memory

I'm having the same problem as the OP, with my A660-11M.
At the moment the display is freezing a few times every day and it's been like this for the last week. Before that, (almost) no problems for a few months after having similar problems.
So, it seems to be coming in bursts which is, needless to say, bizarre.
I too experiences it mainly while watching video (and similarly the audio would continue after the freeze) so I disabled Hardware Acceleration in the FlashPlayer settings after reading this post:
    http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Video-Display/Toshiba-A660-Screen-Freeze/td-p/189944
    But this didn't help.
Then I thought it might be Chrome, so I switched to Firefox 4.0.1 but this didn't help either.
Now, I have disabled the Flash plugin to see if that works - too early to say so far.
BTW, these days the crashing is occuring mostly when I am NOT playing video - although I don't play much video anyway.

Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair, I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive. I am in Paris and my Snow Leopard DVD is in Texas.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

  • Snow leopard server for net boot and software updates only what needs to be running to use it?

Snow leopard server for net boot and software updates only what needs to be running to have it work right?

Netboot and Software Update, at its simplest.  Mac OS X Server also expects to have functional IP networking and DNS services (somewhere) on the LAN (and if you're behind a NAT gateway, then the DNS server(s) are on your LAN and not out at your ISP), or things get weird.  SUS (usually) works out of the box, outside of cases where there's an outbound firewall.  Netboot can be more effort to setup, in terms of what you're loading into the clients.

iPhone4 notes crashing. I use it heavily for business. Last backup 1 month ago, shame on me. But tried hard boot, updated sw, restore appears to wants to erase device not sure that will work.  Anyway to terminal into phone and fix? is it a permissions problem on the file?

  • Won't shutdown or restart unless hard boot - SMCFanControl Application

I have quite a bit of installed hardware so I thought SMCFanControl would be a good idea. However, it seems that I can reproduce a problem I'm having when utilizing the SMC app.
    Problem:
    1. Won't shutdown or restart unless a power boot is performed
    2. Many applications lock up and won't even force quit.
    3. Can't reboot locked apps after force quitting when I re-click in dock.
    Noticed:
I don't seem to have a problem unless I've at some point started ( or even after I've manually quit ) SMCFanControl. BTW I don't have it to start on login. But once I've used SMC after booting, no matter what, that is when the issues seem to begin. So I tried quitting prior to shutdown. Didn't work.
Question: Has anyone else experienced unexplained lock ups, non forceable quits on apps, no shutdown or startup without boot, whom also has SMCFanControl? Has anyone found a solution to this problem as I REALLY NEED some sort of cooling mechanism. Because without SMC, I'm running about 150 farrenheit and I can't get the room any colder without locking up myself!
P.S. I've tried resetting the PRAM or VRam or whatever Ram is reset when you power up, holding the power button in while then pushing Command, Alt, "R" at the same time until it does that long beep.
The only solution found so far is unnacceptable, which is leaving SMC turned off permanently.
    Thanks,
    Videoguy_511

Well Bababooey if you're comparing yourself to a Apple Genius Bar then you should already know my answer, your snarky remark get a snarky reply.  Why would I go to a salesperson to fix my computer problem when I can go directly go to the source itself.  I used to sell Apple computers over 8 years ago and was apple certified before the Genius bar existed. If I am to go about fixing an issue I can't fix on my own I will go to the source itself meaning Apple's programmers and developers - being UI UX Developer myself I know they should have QA'd all platforms and troubleshooted any arising issues.
This was also the first time in the 20 years I've been using a Mac that I even attempted to go on this forum which i thought would put me in connection with a certified Apple representative.  This turned out to be a complete waste of time just being a public forum with no Apple employee involved.  I was hoping to find a quick fix but in turn I was only frustrated with stupid responses such as yours that were in no way an answer to my original question.
BTW I fixed the issue on my own and without your help or Apples help. I'm glad if all forums point here regarding this issue because I now have the answer. The answer I was looking for from someone earlier was as simple as this {Download Maverick and reinstall the platform - it will take an hour to do but afterward 10.9.2 was installed and my computer is now able to shutdown and restart without having to do a hard boot.}  No more software update bar at top and no problems with my drive which I told both you and Grant - I know my computer better than you and I've probably been using them longer than you.
So again Babowa you were so wrong...... and I am right.
Again anyone having the same problem, I suggest reinstalling Maverick and you'll be suprised 10.9.2 will work fine.

  • Need to boot broken Mac-Mini using retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD

    Hi,
    In Summary:
    ==========
I have Mac Mini (late 2009) which does not boot anymore and I need to install Snow Leopard using retail DVD (version 10.6). The OS/installer from the DVD does not seem to boot either. I always very much appreciate the efforts of true geeks. So please, any casual beginner, please do not demoralize with something like "cannot be done" etc.
    The complete story:
    ==================
    The start of the problem:
    1. All of a sudden, one fine day, on start up, my Mac Mini strated to shut itself down without no apparent reason to me. When trying to boot, it would show a progress bar for about 5 minutes - I am assuming that was disk-consistency check being performed. My best guess is that right after the use of Carbon-Copy Cloner (but I am not 100% sure) it all strated to happen.
    2. Performed Mac's Disk-Util check and [Verify Volume] used to display "invalid directory item count, should be 31 instead of 29". Surface scan said disk hardware is 100% fine. Volume Repair never worked, since OS X was installed on the primary disk. I lost the DVDs that came with this Mac Mini, so the option to boot from that DVD and launch Disk Util etc. was not possible.
    TechTool Pro - No Help:
    3. Started googling and had to choose between [TechTool Pro] and [Disk Warrior], opted for TechTool Pro. Tried its bootable DVD only to learn that TechTool Pro cannot fix it. Again, it's surface scan suggested disk hardware is 100% fine. Sent the details to TechTool Pro support team, they couldn't help either after a couple of e-mails+data exchange. (How do I claim my lost money with TechTool Pro - suggestions appreciated as well).
    Googling / Mac Forums:
    4. Started looking into forums, learnt that someone had successfully repaired this problem using Ubuntu 11.04 install DVD (i.e., without installing the Ubuntu, but just using its 'try from DVD' feature). I had that handy, but forgot to disable HFS+ journaling before attempting to fix the problem. Anyway, attempting volume repair that way couldn't fix the problem as well. However this step took away my ability to boot from Mac.
    5. However using Ubuntu's bootable disk, I could access Mac-HDDs contents - and was able to successfully back-up *all* my important data.
    6. Googled and learnt that just attempting to boot using Ubuntu DVD can take away ability to boot using Mac bootable media - possibly due to EFI internals. Suspecting EFI is now corrupt, I tried other 'hacks' like:
6.1 eEFIt Boot Disk - which does not work at all,
6.2 Empire EFI w/ Chameleon - not sure how to proceed with options presented - trying either does not work,
6.3 Super GRUB2 - boots fine, but attempting to boot from Mac-HDD fails after a couple of seconds,
6.4 Boot-132 - boots fine, prompt asks for input, but then I cannot eject/replace the DVD due to Mac-Mini (lack of) design,
      6.5 Ubuntu 11.04 / 11.10 - still boots fine - just that I cannot go into Mac-OS-X from here,
6.6 TechTool Pro bootable DVD - which used to boot fine earlier stopped to boot.
As you can see, none worked successfully. So I didn't yet try other popular rescue media - as I suspect that is not the direction I need to go into.
    >> Looks like most of my problems are due to the fact that I have Mac-Mini which does not allow eject/replace of DVD from command prompt / out side of Mac-OS-X.
    7. Tried emptying EFI partition, playing with EFI/Mac-OS partitions boot flags, Zapping the PRAM, nothing still allows me to boot either from Mac-HDD or any Mac-Bootable-DVD.
    Current State:
    8. Now while boot time, Mac displays a gray screen for a few seconds, and then a blinking prompt on black background. That's it!
Snow Leopard 10.6 Retail Install DVD:
    9. Went to Mac store and bought this DVD only to witness that I can't boot from it as well. (This is a huge shocker, how is Apple able to sell these DVDs if these don't work on genuine MacMini itself. After all we are able to boot from and install Windows/Linux on a variety of Machines).
I am hoping for a very small step/fix that I am missing, since I can still see and access all Mac-HDD contents after booting from Ubuntu bootable DVD. However I am prepared for a good amount of exercise as well - assuming someone posts a valid/verified fix.
    Things available right now:
    ==========================
    A. Genuine Mac-Mini (Late 2009) who lost it's ability to boot either from its HDD or Mac-bootable DVDs (TechTools Pro, Mac OS X retail DVD)
    B. Mac OS X 10.6 Retail DVD
    C. NOT AVAILABLE - DVD that came with this Mac-Mini
    D. Variety of rescue DVDs, listed in section 6 above
    E. Another machine/PC with Ubuntu 11.04 - giving me ability to access internet
    Thanks for reading.
    Zita

I had a similar discussion recently with another user.
Your Mac mini (late 2009) originally came with Mac OS X 10.6.2 build 10A432 or build 10C2234 see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159 it would have come with an original install disc specific to your model of Mac which you could use to run Disk Utility from or to do a complete reinstall.
The retail boxed copy of Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) was originally intended for older Macs which had previously come with Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.4. It would have on it a version of Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.6.1 which would be able to boot these older Macs, but had no need to boot newer Macs which were released after the launch of Mac OS X 10.6 since all those newer Macs already shipped with their own discs.
So it is normal that the retail boxed Snow Leopard installer does not work on your model Mac mini. You should be using the one that shipped with your Mac mini instead. I am guessing you have lost it.
Assuming you have lost the Mac mini original disc, I can suggest the following options to try and workaround this.
If you have another Mac, an older Mac, one that will be bootable using the retail Snow Leopard install disc you have, you could do either of the following.
Connect an empty external GUID partitioned hard disk to this other Mac
Boot from the retail Snow Leopard installer
Install on to the external disk
Once the install is complete, update it using the combo update not the one via Software Update to Mac OS X 10.6.8. This will add all the newer drivers needed to allow it to work on your newer Mac mini. You can download this combo update from here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
You can now disconnect the external drive and connect it to your Mac mini and boot from it by holding down the Option key when you turn the Mac mini on
or a similar process if you want to wipe the Mac mini and reinstall directly on to it
Boot the Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661 )
Connect the Mac mini as an external hard disk to the other older Mac
Boot from the retail Snow Leopard installer
Install on to the external disk
Once the install is complete, update it using the combo update not the one via Software Update to Mac OS X 10.6.8. This will add all the newer drivers needed to allow it to work on your newer Mac mini. You can download this combo update from here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
You can now disconnect the Mac mini and boot from it as normal
Note: While the Mac mini is connected in FireWire Target Disk mode to the second Mac, you could backup (if you don't already have a backup) any files you need to retrieve.
If you don't have a suitable second Mac you may have to either borrow someone else's, or get the help of an Apple Store if one is in your area.

  • Unable to boot normally - Always need to boot with Single User Mode

    Hi Community,
Since last few days, I am unable to boot my Macbook Pro normally, running latest version of OS X Yosemite. When I boot, it goes to grey screen with Apple logo and progress bar, once the progress completes to 100% (after 5-10 minutes which is very longer than usual), it asks me to 'Select  language' which seems like fresh installation of OS X. In that case, when I click next and it doesn't detect my SSD (blank list of select installation disk/drive).
After reading some threads, I found work-around and always need to boot into Single user mode (by pressing Command+S during power on) and then need to run following commands...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
"device is write protected" numerous times
    reboot
and then only it loads OS X and displays login screen. This happens all the times and I need to follow above steps always to get login screen.
    How can I fix this?

Please help me out here. I tried booting it off a USB flash drive with ATV flash but that gave me some errors and prompted me to login with username [email protected] with password frontrow
But I am not sure how to get to login using a suitable input. I tried to telnet it using my PC over network but I dont think it has initialized anything (like wifi or network) at the prompt. Would it take USB keyboard input? All I can do is remove the power and restart it with the usb flash out and get into then get into the recovery loop. I am not sure replacing the hard-drive would help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Internal HD on mac mini not well... need to boot in Single User Mode

Internal HD on mac mini not well... need to boot in Single User Mode.
I only have a Bluetooth Keyboard and Bluetooth Mouse so when I try to boot in Single User Mode (to do the /sbin/fsck hard drive fix thing) it doesn't see the Bluetooth Keyboard. What's the solution?
I also used SuperDuper to use as a boot drive but it won't unmount my internal HD. arghh..
    Help

I have a corrupt drive and was unable to repair all the errors after booting from OS X installer disk and choosing Disk Utility...
I followed the "boot into single user mode" instructions hoping to complete my repair with fsck, however once I got to the localhost:/ root# prompt, my keyboard seemed to be unrecognized!
I tried 3 different USB keyboards - original Apple USB keyboard, Kensington Mac USB keyboard and an old SGI USB windows keyboard. All were able to enter the apple-S key to get into single user mode but NONE of them were able to type any commands whatsoever.....
I'm thinking my only option is to boot the mini as a target drive off my laptop and try to backup my 30GB of music and photos before wiping the drive...
2nd option might be to try Disk Warrior for $79??
Anyone else have ideas for me?

  • My phone froze during a game and when I went to hard boot, it got stuck during shot off. What do I do now?

My phone 4S froze during a game. I went to hard boot to turn off and it did nothing for 15 minutes. Then it froze during the hard boot. It has been stuck now for over two hours. What do I do know?

First open the iPhoto Library package with the Finder as shown in this screenshot:'
Look for the file named iPhotoLock.data and move it to the Trash in the Dock. Launch iPhoto and see if that helped.
If not Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • ColdFusion Server Randomly Re-Booting

    Ok, here's the deal..
We have a Windows NT server running ColdFusion 5,
Professional Edition. The server itself is only about 2 years old.
It has been an absolute workhorse, but lately the server has
decided to just re-boot itself at random times. Of course, any
customers online at the time are cut off. Whenever this happens,
the server logs this message: "The ColdFusion Application Server
    started."
I'm more of a programmer, not a server administrator... so
any help here would be appreciated. Here's what I have done...
I keep the log files cleared regularly. We've replaced
routers. I've checked for any settings that would tell the server
to re-boot, but can't find anything. Any ideas????
    Thanks!
    Sam

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
You need to boot from your install disc.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
i have irriplaceable data on this machine
You have backed up your data to an external source such as an external hard drive? or CD's ??

  • SBS Server 2003 and Exchange Server - need to access but only have HDD

    Hi,
I have been redirected here from a Microsoft Community Forum. I am reasonably conversant with windows systems but am not a computer professional, just trying to see if I can solve a problem without spending a great deal of cash at this stage as
our office has been completely flooded out and we are still struggling to regroup....Here is the original question.
A couple of years ago our sever died completely, we kept the HDD's, but unfortunately not the CD's with the software on or the software keys. So I have now 2HDD's, the original boot partition and one with data on. both clean and fully working and
connected now to an old desktop. I can see everything fine, but I cannot boot from the original boot drive (I have tried simply disconnecting the desktop's boot drive and the windows logo shows for 1 second an d then chucks me back to the initial (DOS?) load.
The point is that I need to boot into SBS2003 with the exchange server installed in order to access a handful of old emails which have become extremely important, and also to run an old version of Filemaker server which will not run on any newer O.S.
I have tried, incidentally, a converter for the exchange files and I can see the directories but I think that unless I pay $xxx for something, which I cannot afford now, then I will not get the emails and all attachments back.
So my question is this - is there anyway I can use the original boot disk in a new hardware environment to restore both sbs 200 and exchange to working condition? I have paid vast sums for both so I do feel that I should be able to use them still!
    Many thanks
    Gor

  • OSX 10.6.8 server will Not Boot

Hi my 10.6.8 server will not boot.  System is a 2009 Mac pro.  I have run disk utility from the original server software install disk, ran repair disk, and repair disk permissions.  Get some acl found errors have read that they most often are erroneous, Still got the same errors after permission repairs.  While booting in verbose mode get the following messages before it stops:
    kern.maxprocoeruip: 266 -> 2400
launchctl: Couldn't stat("/library/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.asterisk.plist"): Nosuch File or directory (note: removed asterisk from this system months ago)
launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /ect/mach_init.d/chum.plist
launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /ect/mac_ini/dashboardadvisoryd.plist
launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /ect/mach_init.d/pilotfish.plist
Unexpected error triggering kextd volume watching.
/: Couldn't get description from Disk Arbitration..
I did read on another post here to try to reinstall the os, however when I try to install over the operating system it says I am trying to install an older os and it will not let me install in the same volume....  Although I am confident I have all the data on backups as well have timemachine backups, I would rather not have to erase and install this machine.
Any insight to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I found that I had a bad harddrive, or at least that is what I think happened..  I did have a time machine backup as well, although in hindsight, I should have made some manual backups of my open directory and the databases hosted on the server.  In any case I ended up purchasing "server grade" harddrives and reinstalling the OS on to the new blank hard drives, I was then able to recover from my time machine backup, however, I did have the issue of the restore going over 100%, I tried this several times and the same result with no end after hours and hours.   After reading through various forums I found that clicking the mouse button for about 10 minutes straight once it hit 100% finally worked, I was lucky that the Time machine backup had good data on it since I have read several posts saying that Time machine doesn;t backup directoies or any "open files" very well, however I had no problems after recovering from the backup.  I do however now backup or archive my directory everyday, and I rely on Filemaker to backup its own databases, however I still use time machine as well...
