PSE 9 & Raw images

Hi all
According to the online help, when I open a Raw file (Canon EOS 30D) in Edit Mode the RAW adjustments screen should come up to let me 'develop' the image. Howver, PSE 9 just opens it straight into the regular editor...
How do I get it to go into the Raw adjustment screen first?
Thanks Andy

AFAIK the Camera raw dialog box is not thrown when the screen resolution height is < 768. Kindly set your screen resolution to something greater than or atleast 1024x768 which is the minimum screen resolution supported by PSE 9 and the Camera Raw dialog box will be shown when you try to open a raw image.

  • Why does Raw image open in PSE 11 Editor as jpeg instead of as RAW image?

For several years I have been managing my photos in iphoto and using PSE as an external editor for editing images. I currently use PSE 11 on an iMac with OS X Lion (version 10.7.5). My iPhoto Library is divided into a number of sub-libraries via iPhoto Library Manager. I have unexpectedly encountered a problem attempting to edit a RAW image (in this case a .NEF image from a Nikon D200) in a sub-library containing images shot in 2007. When I right click on the image and select Edit in External Editor the image opens in PSE 11 Editor, but it opens as a jpeg and not as an .NEF image. This is in spite of the fact that in iPhoto/Preferences/Advanced/RAW Photos I have checked "Use RAW when using external editor."
As an alternative approach I tried dragging and dropping the RAW image into the PSE 11 Editor icon in the Dock, but I got the same result.
I can't recall having this problem previously and would appreciate knowing what might be the source of the problem along with a suggested fix.

I took a clue from both of your responses. I exported a copy of the original RAW file to my desktop. Then I went to PSE Editor and clicked File/Open and selected the RAW file on the desktop. This automatically changed the Format setting to Camera Raw. I then clicked Open and lo and behold my RAW file opens in Camera Raw!
I’m now where I want to be to edit this image in Camera RAW, but I never before had to go around the horn like this to get there! This is very similar to the procedure I follow when I edit jpegs in Camera Raw.
I’m happy to report that this workaround did the job, but I have no idea why it was necessary in this instance. Hopefully this issue will be confined to this one particular iPhoto sub-library!

  • PSE 7 Open Raw Image from Nikon 5100

I have tried to install a bunch of different plug in's however I was only sucessful with http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4582 ... Unfortunately, it is not compatible with Nikon 5100.  Is there another plug in update that I need to install to be able to view and edit my raw images from a Nikon 5100 in PSE 7?
    Thanks.

No, there isn't. You either have to upgrade to the new Photoshop Elements, or else download the latest DNG converter and create digital negative copies of your images. Those can be opened with the Camera Raw that you already have. There will be no more updates for Photoshop Elements 7, and that includes the Camera Raw plug-in that is compatible with it.
Of course, another alternative would be to add Lightroom to your arsenal. It would give you a lot more options for working with your raw images. But that is a decision that you will have to make.

  • Pse 12 wont open my d750 raw images

I recently upgraded my camera to D750.   My raw images will not open in pse 12.  - Is there a plug in? or do I need to upgrade my software as well?

Which operating system are you using?
Did you try Help>Updates from within the pse 12 editor to get camera raw 8.5, which should then enable both the pse 12 editor and organizer to open those files.

  • Converting raw images to jpegs using PSE 11

I have started to capture only RAW images from my Sony NEX 7 camera. However, I wish to be able to send JPEG images to my friends ( prior to RAW editing ). How do I convert/copy my RAW images to JPEGs using PSE 11?
    Thanks
    Derek

After you're done in camera raw (or in your case, without doing anything, but you'll just get the default conversion, because you MUST convert the files), click the Open button, then save in the format of your choice in the editor. JPEG is an 8 bit format so you will want to either set the raw converter's pulldown menu to 8 bits or you will need to go to Image>Mode> 8 bits/channel in the editor. If you're emailing, you can also use Save for Web to size them down if necesary.
If you use the organizer, you can just use file>export as new files and be sure to send the jpgs someplace easy to find.

  • Trouble opening RAW images w/ PSE v. 3.0

I use a Pentax *ist DS digital slr camera to take RAW images and tried putting them into PSE v.3.0 but the program will not take them and says the format is incorrect. The format is pef whatever that is. I tried downloading camera raw updates 3.3 and 3.1 but they don't help. I assuming it's b/c of the file format, but update 3.1 says it supports Pentax *ist DS cameras, so I'm confused! My system operates on Windows XP, Media Center Edition, v. 2002.

A lot of RAW problems are caused by incorrect installation - the plug-in file must be in the proper directory and the old plug-in removed or renamed. Take a look in c:\Program Files\Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats; Your downloaded plugin (Camera Raw.8bi) should be there, and the old one either deleted or renamed. I tack on a .bak extension, making the old file Camera Raw.8bi.bak, in case I need to remove the new one. Camera Raw 3.3 is still a beta release and will need replacement; 3.1 or 3.2 should work with the DS files.

  • Can PSE 10 open Canon G16 Raw images?

I am a professional photographer and educator. I have a client who just purchased a Canon G16. He has PSE 10, and he has contracted with me for some tutoring. I want to include editing G16 Raw images.
However, I wonder if PSE 10 can open G16 Raw images?
My client's computer is not powerful enough to upgrade to PSE 12.
I understand that I can have him convert the Canon G16 Raw images to DNG's using the free Adobe converter and import those into PSE 10, but I was hoping that PSE 10 could use the new 8.2 Raw Converter from Adobe that includes the G16, so it could import the images directly.
    Thanks,
    Russ

The Camera Raw plug-in for PSE10 was last updated in the spring or summer of 2012.  If the G16 is newer than that (it certainly is), then the DNG Converter is the only route.
I see on the list of supported cameras, that the G16 was first supported with ACR 8.2, so you’d need the DNG Converter 8.2 or newer (8.3 ATM):

The DNG Converter is available on the Adobe Updates page:

  • I am getting this message as I try to upload raw images from my file folders to my PSE

I am getting this message as I try to upload raw image files from my file/folders into PSE what do I do to get PSE to accept the raw files?
"Nothing was imported. The file(s) or folder(s) selected to import did not contain any supported file types"  What do I do.  Just to let you guys know I am able to upload all JPEG files that are already in my files into PSE but not the raw photos.  Obviously I want to keep them raw in order to have more control over the outcome of the picture.

The  camera I am using is the Canon Rebel T3I, the PSE version is elements 9, and I don't know what version of raw converter I may or may not be using.  Where do I find the version of raw converter?

  • Working on a RAW image in PSE 10 on a Windows 7 PC

I use PSE 10 to touch up photos.  I recently purchased a DSLR and when I work on a RAW image (CR2 file), I've noticed that I can only save that image as a TIFF.  I've only attempted this once, but the original CR2 file was 24.6MB and the TIFF file is 102MB.  I've been told that shooting in the RAW format allows you to manipulate the image in greater detail.  It seems counter productive when the resulting image is much larger than the original.  Is there something I don't understand or is that just the way it is?  My installed PSE 10 has the correct version RAW plug-in.  The question I have is this - after working on a RAW image is there a way to say it into a smaller file format.  I was only able to save it as a TIFF format.

Thanks Barbara - I will try that in the AM and let you know what happens - wish I understood the rationale to that; I wonder if I owned full blown Photoshop, would I have the same problem (is that Adobe's way of making you purchase the more expensive program) - this is the first time I've taken the opportunity to use this forum - thanks for such a quick response -

  • Opening raw images in Photoshop Elements 9

When opening raw images in Photoshop Elements 9 (File -> Open or File -> Open As), the Adobe Camera Raw dialog do not open.
Instead I get a window with a progress bar and the text "Reading Camera Raw Format".
The image then opens in the Photoshop Elements editor.
I have tested this with raw images both from Canon EOS 1000D and Samsung WB2000 cameras.
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to solve this issue.
I run Photoshop Elements on a HP netbook running Widows XP and with an Intel Atom N450 / 1.66 GHz processor, 2 GB ram and a screen resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels.

Unfortunately you can't see the raw converter in PSE 9 on screens less than 800 px tall, which means not on netbooks. PSE will automatically convert it for you, but that dialog box and a few others, like the Advanced Downloader window, will not appear.

  • When opening an image Photoshop Elements 12 is opening it in Camera Raw, it is not a RAW image and it is cropped How do I uncrop the opened image?

When I am opening a .jpg image not an actual raw camera image from Elements 12 it is being opened as a camera Raw image and the image is cropped, I can't find anyway to get the image to uncrop or zoom out so that the entire image is visible so that I can actually edit it to something that is useable. The images were taken with an iPad and copied I suspect using the organizer from Elements 11 but I can't be sure. If I could just uncrop the opened image so that the entire image is visible this would not be a big deal.
Is there a way to uncrop the image that is being opened by Camera Raw? Am I going to have to get my hands on the source of the images (the iPad) and copy the images again using explorer and not let them be copied with the organizer?

Uncheck the boxes at the bottom of the dialog Scale styles and resample Image so that only constrain proportions is checked. If you the change the resolution box from 240 to 300 you will get back to your original dimensions.
This is a meaningless thing to do, you still have the exact same number of pixels, you have only changed the metadata number in the file for ppi, and your prints are not affected by this number.
You could also use the same method to change the dimensions to 6 x 4 or 9 x 6 etc.
There are some cases (actually most cases) where you need to CROP the photo to change the dimensions, when the aspect ratio of the original photos is different than the aspect ratio of the final photo; the specific case in 99jon's example is the only case you ever want to change dimensions using Image->Resize->Image Size, where the aspect ratio doesn't change from 6x4 to 9x6 (or 12x8 or 18x12 or ...), and even then, you could do the same thing simply by telling the printer the size you want, you don't really need to do anything in PSE.

  • How can I get my Nikon D3x raw images to download into the organizer of Elements 6.0

I recently purchased a Nikon D3x and have been unable to view my raw images in Elements 6.0. I have downloaded the Raw 5.4 update. When that did not work, i uninstalled Elements and the 5.4 update and reinstalled them again. I am able to download the raw photos into the  Elements Downloader, but once the photos go to the organizer, i get  the screen saying that "the file is damaged or is a format that cannot be included". According to the Adobe Tech Support Dept., Elements 6.0 is able to support the Nikon D3x, with the Raw 5.4 update. Has anyone else run into this problem and have a solution?
I would greatly appreciate any help.

Thank you for your response dj_paige.
I was able to see that the 4.2 that came with the Elements 6.0 is still on my computer (by going to the (Orange tab ) Edit/Help/About plug in). I could not find the 4.2 listed separately anywhere on the computer so that I could delete it. Is there a way to do this?  I am  a true novice, so when you say to make sure the old plug in is removed from the File Formats folder are you talking about in Tools?
I am talking about the File Formats folder that gets created when you install PSE. You have obviously been to that folder already because you said you installed Adobe Camera Raw 5.4. Go to that folder in Windows, and make sure that the old plug-in (which was named CameraRaw.8bi, but may have been renamed by you) is deleted from that folder (not renamed, not moved to a subfolder). Then, following the instructions are on the page where you downloaded Camera Raw 5.4, install the new plug-in.

  • Raw images in Photoshop Elements 3

Hi. I just got a new pc that has Windows Vista. I installed Photoshop Elements and CS2, and now I am trying to upload raw images to PE3, but it keeps uploading the jpeg file, not the raw. It works on XP, but not Vista. Is it a o/s problem or am i doing something else wrong. I am using a Canon EoS 20 D, and my PS3 and CS2 are all updated. Upgrading the software is not an option at the moment, so any help would be appreciated!

It could well be an OS problems as I believe that PSE 5 was the first that Adobe supported in Vista and that needed a patch to make it 5.02.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 - Canon EOS5D Mkiii - RAW images

I have Photoshop Elements 9 and Premiere Elements 9 installed on my iMac, operating system Version 10.9.4. I have upgraded my Canon EOS 5d Mki to a Mkiii and downloaded Adobe's Plug-in 6.5 update but I am unable to open RAW images from the Mkiii in Elements. They do open in Canon's software.Adobe offer no telephone support for this. Any ideas please?

You need camera raw 6.7 & PSE10 for the 5d mkiii. Alternatively, download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.6
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.6
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:
