  • My first try to get Stock Quotes into Numbers...

    Ok, I heard alot of people asking over the past year for a way to pull stock prices into Numbers. So heres my first public applescript. I just figured most of this out over the past day.
    There is a zip file that contains the template file with the pre-made sheet and table in it. You can then base any additional tables off that data that you wish to. The script looks for a table of a specific name with a table named Stocks. Symbols in column A starting in row 2, and it places the price in column B.
    I posted it on the Numberstemplates website:
    Grab Stock Price
    This is my first attempt at an applescript, if any gurus want to assist and show us a better way of doing it, please let us know so we can all learn.
    Thanks alot everyone,
    Jason

    we found some errors that had to do with interfacing with Safari. Some very nice people on the applescript page got me some answers on how to approach it better. Believe it or not, we made such great changes to the original, that I now consider it to be at v3.5
    It is completed as best I can test on my machine, On a dual G5 2.0 with 1.5 Gb ram runs at about 80 symbols per minute (up from ~10/min using safari only). I would love to hear how it works for you. Please leave comments on either this site or the one I posted it on. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    I can only test from home, so I do not know how well it works 'out of the box' in other locales than the US. If anyone could let me know, or localize and repost in the main thread at the link above, that would be great!
    Thanks alot everyone that helped me get this running so smooth,
    Jason

  • Stock quotes to Numbers

    In Google Docs, I can put a reference in a cell which will import a stock or option price from Yahoo Finance. Is it possible to do this in Numbers 3.5.2?

    No, you can't enter a formula that will retrieve data from Yahoo! Finance.
    But you can use AppleScript, and get your information at a click of a button.
    See threads here and here.

  • How do I automate Live Australian Stock Quotes (ASX) using Numbers 3.0 for a Share Portfolio?

    I have recently downloaded Numbers 3.0 on my Macbook Pro and wish to use it for tracking my Share Porfolio.
    Could anyone please provide advice of a simple way to automate live Australian Stock Quotes (ASX - www.asx.com.au) so I can track the daily price of the shares.
    Thankyou,

    If you can downloadfrom ASX quotes in a csv format (either comma-separated or tab-separated) you can import them into a Numbers table without much trouble.
    I don't think there is a way to fully automate the process. The workflow would be download from ASX, copy/paste into Numbers table or drag file onto the Numbers icon.

  • Thanks for help with Numbers and web stock quotes

    Koenig Yvan,
    I want to public thank you for sharing your Applescript: InsertQuotes from 2009 that works with Numbers.
    I've successfully modified and simplified it for my purposes to be able to retrieve and set values for a portfolio of U.S. mutual funds that are our investments.  I have a spreadsheet that started out years ago as an Excel spreadsheet on Windows XP and used Microsoft's ability to retrieve information from the web from finance.yahoo.com and place it in Excel spreadsheet cells.
    I converted that spreadsheet to Google spreadsheet using their GoogleFinance function.  It proved to be unreliable intermittently and now I've taken that spreadsheet into Numbers '09 and used your script, modified to use my portfolio's list of symbols and to put just the prices into a quotes sheet.  For each account I track in my Numbers spreadsheet I use the table Lookup function to search the quotes sheet for a specific symbol and have the function return the associate price.
    Following your instructions I put the Applescript in the ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/Numbers/ and after opening my Numbers spreadsheet, with one mouse click in the System wide Scripts menu, execute the script which accesses finance.yahoo.com and sets the latest prices into my quotes sheet.
    Thanks very much for sharing with everyone.  I appreciate having access to your work to make my work much easier.

    Which structure ?
    If you are wondering about the Library folder, it's a feature described thiuysands of time.
    In Lion, this folder is hidden.
    press Option while triggering the menu "Go to" give access to this folder.

  • Stock quote download

    Hi, all. I'm new to Numbers and need to learn how to accomplish a stock quote download/import. In Excel I had specially created a menu item that would allow a column of stock tickers to have a column of quotes downloaded in a column to the right of the tickers. (The menu item could also be accessed by a keyboard shortcut, ^ L.) The created menu file in Excel had the suffix XLA. Is there a way to use the XLA file in Numbers? If not is there a way to create menu items?
    Thanks for any input. Bruce

    xla are hidden add-ins. usually containing VBA code that added your menu commands when you load the xla file, and contained the code that those new menu commands ran to get your stocks.
    (I write xla's for a international investment firm in my day job)
    This functionality is not built into numbers yet. If it is the kind of thing you would want to see in the next version, use the "Submit feedback" option in the numbers menu.
    hope this helps explain why it won;t work here. So how to get something to bring in your stocks? Well, you could try copy and paste from a stock page, or find a stock site that will let you download a text file of the stock info and open that up in numbers.
    Hope this at least helps explain,
    Jason

  • Can you import stock quotes automatically?

    new to numbers. How can you import stock quotes and banking information into Numbers?

    Users have written scripts to import stock quated from the web for the old version of Numbers, but I haven't heard of anyone who has done this for Numbers V3, and it may not be possible since an Applescript Dictionary hasn't been found for V3.

  • Can I paste football table from Safari into Numbers by Dec 23?

    *Can I paste a table from Safari into Numbers - and get a table?*
    Whether I use Paste or Paste Match Style (?) it just goes into one column, which is useless. Same result in Pages. But in the Appleshop demo I copied the table from Safari into Excel and it created a proper table.
    Apologies if this is already answered. I am new to Mac and to iWorks. I've only got the evaluation version of iWorks v1.0. I was going to get the full version by Xmas - but this is a real showstopper. If I can't use the spreadsheet on web tables (price comparisons, stocks, etc etc) then iWorks won't do.
    If it can't do this, are there any other solutions out there? Thanks.
    *_Problem Description_*
    1. In Safari select and Copy a table (here's the football league table http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/table/default.stm)
    2. Paste the table into Numbers - as a table (not as a single column)
    3. sort the table on descending GD

    Hello
    Some times ago, I posted a script for this kind of problem but I just discover (with your table) that I forgot a case.
    Here is a revised version which I will put soon on my iDisk.
    -- [SCRIPT Tables2Numbers_v5]
    property nbCols : "3"
    property english : true (* true= English messages, false = Messages Français *)
    property msg1 : ""
    property list1 : {}
    if msg1 = "" then my prepareMessages()
    set theDatas to (get the clipboard as text)
    if theDatas does not contain tab then
    set nbCols to text returned of (display dialog msg1 default answer nbCols)
    set nbCols to nbCols as integer
    set my list1 to paragraphs of theDatas
    set nb to count of my list1
    set nbRows to nb div nbCols
    set newDatas to ""
    repeat with i from 1 to nbRows
    repeat with j from 1 to nbCols - 1
    set newDatas to newDatas & (item (j + (i - 1) * nbCols) of my list1) & tab
    end repeat
    set newDatas to newDatas & (item (j + 1 + (i - 1) * nbCols) of my list1) & return
    end repeat
    set the clipboard to newDatas
    else
    set the clipboard to theDatas
    end if
    set my list1 to {}
    on prepareMessages()
    if english is true then
    set msg1 to "How many columns ?"
    else
    set msg1 to "Nombre de colonnes ?"
    end if
    end prepareMessages
    -- [/SCRIPT]
    If you grab your table in the clipboard after counting the columns (here 16)
    run the script
    After that you may paste the table in Numbers (or in AppleWorks)

  • I'm trying to input phone numbers starting with 0, into Numbers spreadsheet. It keeps deleting the 0-  any clues?

    I'm trying to input phone numbers starting with 0 into Numbers Spreadsheets. It keeps deleting the 0. any clues anyone?

    select the cells (or column) where you are entering the phone numbers and change the format to "Text":
    Then "Natural" way to write numbers is to omit leading zeros.
    Another ways is to leave the the cell format as "Automatic" and type a single quote BEFORE entering the phone number... like this:
    '0408

  • Excel queries to MSN MoneyCentral Investor Stock Quotes stopped working

    I update stock quotes in 3 spreadsheets using a query to MSN MoneyCentral Investor Stock Quotes. Three days ago (after using for 2 years) , the Refresh for Data
    Connection would not work, giving me a pop-up with "Unable to open...http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/excel/quotes.asp?SYMBOL =MSFT+ +CSCO+ +ABT+ +...etc"
    What is going on? Can we no longer get quotes from MSN?

    Create Your Own!
    First, navigate yourself to c:/program files/microsoft office/officeXX/queries.  The XX is either 12, 13, 14depending on system.
    Then copy the MSN Stock Quote file and paste.  Rename it YahooQuotes.  It will be an .iqy file (inquiry)
    Open it with Notepad and put this in it....
    WEB
    1
    http://finance.yahoo.com/quotes/["QUOTE","Enter stock, fund or other symbols separated by commas."]/view/fv
    Selection=2
    Formatting=All
    PreFormattedTextToColumns=True
    ConsecutiveDelimitersAsOne=True
    SingleBlockTextImport=False
    Save it.  This will allow you to get the same data as from the old moneycentral into a table.  From there, you're on your own.  BTW, you can play with the "/view/fv" to get different columns.
    BTW, I know just enough to be dangerous

  • Retrieving stock quotes using concatenate

    I've read most of the posts on downloading stock quotes and I haven't quite found the answer to my question, so here goes a new discussion...
    I have a table of 57 ticker symbols that I follow. The table grows and shrinks regularly as I find new companies to follow and remove ones that don't meet my needs. Each ticker symbol is listed in column A of my DATA table and each row contains all the various data for that symbol. Here's a small section of that table as an example...
    Ticker
    Review Date
    S&P Stars
    Price

    2
    103.77
    BBL
    May 19, 2013
    3
    58.38
    I've created a CONCATENATE formula to combine the ticker symbols into a single cell (C12):
    =CONCATENATE(Data :: A3,",",Data :: A4,",",Data :: A5,",",Data :: A6,",",Data :: A7,",",Data :: A8,",",Data :: A9,",",Data :: A10,",",Data :: A11,",",Data :: A12,",",Data :: A13,",",Data :: A14,",",Data :: A15,",",Data :: A16,",",Data :: A17,",",Data :: A18,",",Data :: A19,",",Data :: A20,",",Data :: A21,",",Data :: A22,",",Data :: A23,",",Data :: A24,",",Data :: A25,",",Data :: A26,",",Data :: A27,",",Data :: A28,",",Data :: A29,",",Data :: A30,",",Data :: A31,",",Data :: A32,",",Data :: A33,",",Data :: A34,",",Data :: A35,",",Data :: A36,",",Data :: A37,",",Data :: A38,",",Data :: A39,",",Data :: A40,",",Data :: A41,",",Data :: A42,",",Data :: A43,",",Data :: A44,",",Data :: A45,",",Data :: A46,",",Data :: A47,",",Data :: A48,",",Data :: A49,",",Data :: A50,",",Data :: A51,",",Data :: A52,",",Data :: A53,",",Data :: A54,",",Data :: A55,",",Data :: A56,",",Data :: A57,",",Data :: A58,",",Data :: A59)
    Returns to cell C12 the following:
    AAPL,ACN,AFL ...  WMT,YUM
    I then use the next formula to retrieve updated quotes from the Yahoo website:
    =HYPERLINK("http://finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=" & C12 & "&f=snl1d1","Download Prices")
    Once the quotes.csv is downloaded, I copy and past the stock prices into my Data table.
    Now to my question:
    Can the CONCATENATE formula above be simplified so that it's easier to add or remove cells?
    If I add a bunch of new symbols to the Data table then I have to remember to add each new cell to the formula above. Or, if I delete a bunch of symbols then I delete the same number of cells from the formula.
    This is a great example of the need for a range of cells in CONCATENATE.
    Perhaps some programmer can get create and allow =CONCATENATE(Data :: A3:A59,",") where A3:A59 is the range and "," indicates an optional separation character.

    You can implement like:
    The top table is name "Download Link" and is a single-cell table.  The bottom table contains your ticker symbols and has a column which concatentates the previous list with a new sysmbol-- you can hide column B.
    B2=B1&IF(ISBLANK(A2), "", IF(ROW() = 2, "", ",")&A2)
    select B2 and fill down as needed.
    In the top table "Download Link"
    A1=HYPERLINK("http://finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=" & OFFSET(TickerTable :: $B$2, ROWS(TickerTable :: B)-2, 0) & "&f=snl1d1","Download Prices")
    This takes the fully concatenated string from column B of the ticker table.  If you change the name of the tables adjust them in the formulas.

  • Import CSV into Numbers under European Settings?

    SUMMARY: Anyone know how to import a CSV into Numbers on the iPhone when under European settings?
    DETAIL:
    The iPhone version of numbers seems to have difficulties reading any CSV if the user's device is on a setting where the decimal separator is a comma (e.g. 12,00) (such as most of Europe). Interestingly the iPad version does not have this problem.
    For example HelloWorld.csv containing
    Hello,World
    imports as all one line rather than in two columns.
    UTF8 of UTF16 doesn't seem to make a difference.
    Changing the comma to a tab doesn't make a difference. (Numbers won't import .tsv files either.)
    Adding quotes to the fields doesn't help.
    Suggestions on creating a file that Numbers can import?

    On the iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then International, then Region Format. Set that to whatever it is on the iPad and then the CSV file should import the same on iPhone as it does on iPad. Not sure what else it will change, but if you have it changed on your iPad already, maybe it won't be a problem for the iPhone. And you can always change it back after importing the file I guess. Good luck.
