Puppet Tool in After Effects 7.0?

Hi Everyone,
I have a question for you.
I am trying to create a 2D animation with after.
I want it to look like tradional hand drawing animation.
I have a character to animate and I wanted to use the puppet tool. The thing is that I have After Effects 7.0 and I cannot find this tool. Does that mean that the puppet tool does not exist on After 7.0.
Please let me know and if you have any other advice to prevent drawing all the images, I'll be happy to hear them.
Thanks

The Puppet Tool only exists in the current version - After Effects CS3 (Version 8.0)

  • Eye Dropper tool in After Effects Not working Properly

I am using Adobe After Effects CS5 on a mac. And most all of the eyedropper tools in the software are not working properly. They always select a way different color than it should be. What is wrong?
One day they just all decided to not work. Its really frustrating. Its been a few weeks now.

Well, For some strange reason its working just fine today. I did restart my computer yesterday and after that it seems to be working.
I haven't recenitly messed with my hardware acceleration/graphics card or monitor color profile. So if that was it, then it did it on its own.
None the less its working now. Thank you for your help!!!

  • Auto Align Tool in After Effects?

In After Effects, is there a way to align a frame based on the frames content with another frame? Thanks!

You can use the align tool to align layers by layer size. There is no automatic way to align items inside the layer boundaries or align objects in a video.

  • How Do I make curved lines with the pen tool in after effects CS6

Hello, so I have been following this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKzB-CFT0MI on how to make 2d intros in after effects and at the 2:20 mark he shows how he uses the pen tool to make curved lines around the elipse. I tried to do the samething myself, and couldent make the curved lines. I looked it up online and there were tutorials on how to make curved lines but they did not work the same way, and I could not make curves like he did.So if any of you know how to do curved lines like in the video, your help will be appreciated.
    Thanks !

This is basic stuff and it's basically the same way Illustrator or Photoshop works with bezier paths. You'll find a lot of helpful information if you just type masking or mask in the Search After Effects Help field at the top right corner of the app.
    Adobe - Search: masking
Directly from the Help Files: After Effects Help | Creating shapes and masks
Mylenium.. sorry you thought it was an awful tutorial. I made it in under a minute just to show this member the very basic task of creating a mask with the pen tool and animating the shape. I'll try and up the quality of my quick replies to simple operations.

  • Is There Any "Content-Aware" Tool For After Effects?

Hi. I'm trying to remove an object from a video and refill the space previously occupied by the object with the surrounding imagery, so as to make it look like the object never existed. Basically like what Photoshop CS5's Content-Aware tool does. Is there any such feature for video in CS5? Thanks for your help

No. Please do a search before posting. The pros and cons have been discussed . In the meantime use the conventional paint and clone tools.

  • I am new to After Effects and Motion 5 and I have a question

    Hello there,
I am currently working on a personal side project for a family member. She would like me to make a video with recorded audio and pictures from the 1920’s for my grandmother. I would like to give the parallax and 2.5D effect a try but as I never used After Effects or Motion before I am a little overwhelmed.
I have about 80 images to animate. Right now I am in the ‘Photoshop phase’. I am going through each image and separating the foreground, mid-ground, and background, into separate layers and saving the .psd files to eventually bring into Motion 5 (or After Effects) and animate.
    After seeing this video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVrYyX3bHI8
I really wanted to animate the images I had in a similar fashion. I really loved how they seemed to move and know that I can accomplish this appearance with the pin tool in After Effects. After seeing this video however, I continued looking into the 2.5d effect and found this movie for Motion 5:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmxlm2nkVLA
I bought Motion 5 because I thought the interface seemed more user friendly to newcomers (like myself), the effects were similar, and because I couldn’t afford to pay for After Effects every month.
But now I am kicking myself. Motion 5 is lovely and I do like the camera effects but I don’t think I can accomplish the ‘puppet’ effect with it like I can in After Effects. Does anyone know if it is possible? Is there a plugin for Motion 5? Can I send my .psd files into Motion 5, set up the timeline and cameras, save it, and then move it into After Effects and then use the pin tool to manipulate the images and layers?
I have read that some say it is hard to move Motion files into After Effects? If this is the case, could I save the Motion file, open it in Adobe Premiere, and THEN open it in After Effects and play around with it?
Any help is appreciated. Thank you so much in advanced.

2.5D is fairly easy to do in Motion... that's the good news. The bad news is: if you don't know what you need to do to accomplish it, it's practically impossible to do easily or well.
The first problem to overcome is perspective, and the other problem is parallax.
These two tutorials (by Mark Spencer) will give you all the information you need dealing with moving Photoshop Layers in Z-space. Even though the point of the tutorials is a "fly through", the same information applies to creating 2.5D. Just animate the camera laterally (sweep) instead of dolly.

  • PLEASE HELP!! Weird screen glitch in After Effects CS5.5?!? (Windows 7)

I was editing some videos in the trial of After Effects CS5.5, and I went to render something in full screen (I've been using it for two weeks now, and i've rendered in full screen before) and suddenly a bunch of error messages started popping up,and After Effects closed out. Now every time I open After Effects, its like the screen zooms in: I can't see my taskbar or my tools for after effects, or anything on the edges at all. Production Premiere and everything else works fine, but After Effects is always like this now. I've searched all the help centers, and google, and youtube, and I've found nothing. I also tried unistalling and reinstalling the Master Collection trial but it still came up in full screen.
PLEASE HELP I only have 12 days left on trial and I'm trying to finish one last video.

Try deleting your preferences. If that doesn't do it, Reboot, Use the Adobe Cleaner Tool, then re-install AE. If that doesn't work let us know. It's probably your preferences.

  • Animating in After Effects with video footage

When animating in After Effects, instead of using a solid background, can I use a video as the background and have it playing while the character is moving? I can't see why it wouldn't work. I've saw people question about animating in Flash ect and bringing it in, but I need to animate within AF. Hope someone can help me out!

    Hi Claudia.
Are you using "AF" to stand for "Adobe Flash" Or "AFter effects"?
If you are trying to composite character animation over a background in After Effects, yes, it is a fantastic application for it.
You can create many types of backdrops easily (and very easy to modify elements back/forth from Photoshop)
As for character animation, there are multiple standard tools within After Effects.  There are also third party plugins that may help you.
One plugin that I like to use for character animation is DUIK. DuDuF R&D » Duik – DuDuF IK Tools
    (free)
Another plugin that is excellent is Mettle Freeform http://www.mettle.com/tutorials-digieffects-freeform-freeform-v2/

  • Help with After Effects

I just upgraded to PP CS4 to CS5 Premium with After Effects and Photoshop.  I'm trying hard to figure things out but I'm unfamiliar with these programs and have no idea where to begin to learn.  I've tried watching various tutorials, but they skip over basics, and unfortunately, that's what I need.  I
Can anyone recommend a really good book or video or something to get me started?  I know there's so much to learn and I'm so eager to learn it all.  However, I don't even know how to get the footage from CS5 to After Effects.
One more question - I'm working on a video right now in CS5. The girl in the video has rosacea and I want to take the red out of her face.  Is this possible in After Effects?  If so, can someone please tell me how to go about doing it - or suggest a tutorial that deals with such an issue?
    Thank you so much,
    Jules

    > Do you have any idea which tool in after effects I would use, and how,
to remove color from an area on a video and blend it with the
surrounding area.  Or if anyone knows of a tutorial explaining that
process I would so appreciate it.
You should ask your After Effects questions on the After Effects forum:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/aftereffects_general_discussion
Here are two video tutorials that show different ways to selectively apply an effect to a specific area:

But you should really begin at the beginning and learnt he basics of After Effects first.

  • After Effects and Cinema 4D but what about Carrara and Poser

I know Autodesk owns Maya, 3DS and even Softimage's/Avid's XSI.  Having said that I don't doubt that is why Adobe partnered with Cinema 4D. I am not a fan of Cinema 4D myself and would have prefered Maya, 3DS Max or even XSI over Cinema 4D for integration with After Effects but I know Autodesk would not want to partner with Adobe because their Smoke software is competiton for Adobe's AE and Premiere Combo. I think After Effects is a awesome and the fact that it has great integration with Cinema 4D is some what cool to say the least but I would like to think Adobe could have bought Poser or even Carrara from DAZ. Carrara has many great rendering features as well as hair, cloth, fluid dynamics and much more. AE should keep the Cinema 4D render engine but I think Adobe should invest in their own 3D Software for integration with After Effects as well.
Does anyone else want to see After Effects integrate with other 3D software? Cinema 4D is a nice start but it is not my first choice.

Cinema 4D was the logical choice.  It is reknowned for it's compatibility features with After Effects already.  It is the common tool of choice for many of the motion graphics designers who need 3D and After Effects.
Maybe one day we'll see a universal rendering engine that allows the use of ANY 3D software within compositing tools like After Effects.  Or maybe After Effects will become a true 3D package itself.  Until then, I'm thrilled about the C4D compatibility introduced by this upgrade.

  • Talk something about After Effects

Hi everyone, I love to make VFX and I love After Effects. I just want to talk something about future of AE. I used to try using many softwares like Nuke, Fusion and specially Hitfilm. Hitfilm's really impress, it's so fast and easy to use. With some projects, I can playback realtime in Hitfilm while I got 30 seconds per frame in After Effects. In the future, Hitfilm (and another new compositing/VFX softwares) will developed fully like After effects, but After effects can't be developed to be faster like them, because they got the new technology platform and AE's too old. I'm afraid, afraid oneday, when hitfilm (and the others) grow more and more, get powerful tools like After effects plugin+script, there'll be no one use After effects :(. So I hope Adobe will re-build After effect at the beginning, whether have to renounce the old system that builded from 1993 for that After effect would become to be fast like Hitfilm, powerful like Nuke. I love After Effects .

The majority of the After Effects team is working on rewriting the core of AE to make it run faster, so your wish is coming true.

  • CS 5.5 After Effects Crashes with Puppet Tool

Currently, I'm using a CS 5.5 After Effects and the program keeps randomly crashing when I use the Puppet tool specifically with the message "After Effects error: Crash in progress" and says it created a copy of my last save.
    Computer Specs:
    Mac Pro 1,1
    Mac OS 10.7.5
2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon
    7 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    250 GB SSD - 60 GB available
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
Please be specific, so I may understand the problem clearly. Thank you in advance.

Understood. After repeating this process a few times today CS 5.5 AE crashes after using the Puppet Pin tool when applying more than one Starch point or adjusting the first starch point. This is a repeated cycle. I addition, I'm using a plug-in called DUIK with puppet tools to create inverse kinematic arms. Below is a step by step process with a picture of the  error/crash reports at the end.
For the Right Leg I applied Four Puppet Pin Points with all excluding the Toe Point used as a IK applied from the DUIK plug-in. The Amount of Triangles is 600 w/ 0 Expansion
I apply a Starch point at middle thigh. Amount 100,  Extent 94.  In one case at this step, adjusted the starch point a few times and AE crashed.
I adjust the Thigh Starch Point to Amount 12, Extent 94. When I go to apply the next Starch point at the middle Calf, AE Crashes every time.
These two windows pop up. The text is very long for the crash report so this first image is the top.
This is the bottom of the Crash Report.
Here is I believe to be the same crash report, but gets sent to Adobe. May have more detail. Top of the Report.
    Bottom of the Report
I've used this same plug-in before with many puppet pin points, but no starch pin points however I've seen examples of people using the starch points with the plug-in before so i know its possible. I've done complex puppet tool projects with both tools for muscles and bone movement before with no problems, but that was in CC 2014 AE. Please let me know if you need anymore info or details to help me understand my problem and solution. Thank you in advance

  • I have after effects through creative cloud and I'm struggling to get the puppet tool. I have been told it's free.

In CS6 it's a free and installed plug in, but I can't seem to find it. Again I have after effects through cloud.

  • After Effects Puppet Tool "Warping Upon Rotation"problem

    Hi Everyone,
I am having a big issue with my newly puppeted after-effects character. I have rigged up a character I made originally in illustrator. I placed puppet pins, expressed to null objects I use as controllers, then parented to each other. I have done this many times before, with no problem. However, this time, when I rotated the "Parent" Null, the child nulls follow as usual, but in this case, the object is warped through the rotation (attached pictures below). I have been using the "Puppettools 3" Plug-in, and when the bug showed up using that, I tried using this expression (upon the pins themselves):
    A=thisComp.layer("NULL_OBJECT");
    fromWorld(A.toWorld(A.anchorPoint));
which accomplishes the same thing, just through a longer, manual process. In both cases, the object warps. Before expressing to nulls, the rotation works fine. Anyone know why it would be behaving like this? Perhaps there is something I overlooked in the process? Not sure. Any help appreciated. Thanks
    First image: starting point.
Second image: rotation only on the "Parent" null and pin. no other pins moved, it simply warps to that form without my action.

    Hi Rick,
Thank you for this detailed and exemplified response, everything you are saying makes sense, and the examples seem to be exactly what I am dealing with. I tested out this troubleshooting option, but unfortunately, my mesh is still not working. I tried different values of triangles - 200, 350, 370, 600, 900, and even 1500 (the max), and it still warps. My best number was 1024, but that also seems ridiculously high. Could it be because my pin placements are not linear enough? Or there are too many in such a small area? My triangles don't seem to distribute as well as yours. Here are pictures of my mesh:

  • Flash as a Character Creation tool... After Effects as the Animating tool

I was watching a tutorial in Lynda.com in which an animation studio in California used Flash as their drawing and painting tool for the creation of Characters... not sure what they used for the subsequent animation of the characters, but their feeling was that Flash was a better intuitive freehand/variable width outline creation program than Illustrator or photoshop for this application...  I'm not sure of their choice of Animating tools, but, its been my feeling that After Effects seems to be a more user friendly (organized) and robust, yet less confusing keyframing program than Flash... thus my question on the subject matter is....... does anyone out there have any experience with this scenario of using Flash for character creation then exporting the hopefully layered and vector artwork into After Effects for animation, and if so what is the proper workflow as far as exporting goes from Flash to get the character set up in After effects for animating.  I know the rigging and Hierarchy workflow in After Effects... more specifically I'm asking about file type for exporting from Flash to possibly keep the vector characteristics once in After Effects.  If I am off in my thoughts please clarify for me if possible the best programs for these applications!

    My experiences back your theory.
I love Flash with a Passion for years  Its great for low budget projects because it lets you pump out results fast. But it also has its faults as soon as you move into the medium budget realm, with more than 4-5 people working on the same project for more than a month. It will get messy, you will start to loose more and more work because of flashs rising crash tendencies. It may come in handy even in big budget productions, but solely as a Preproduction tool, that you use for developing storyboards or pitch ideas. After Effects has a steeper learning curve but in the end I would say its a much more reliable, solid tool for animators than Flash.
I felt actually inspired by your post to come up with a little comparison bewtween flash/AE concerning the character animation workflow
