Purchase recommendation

I currently have a Linksys BEFSR41 - EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch. I love it but it's time for an upgrade. Trying to sort through the massive selection of routers available I just haven't found what I'm looking for yet. Perhaps someone here can help me find what I need.
Three features are a must for me on my next router:
1)URL filter that will let you type in filter strings. If any part of a URL matches a filtering string, the router will block the request. The ability to add a large list of filters quickly would be very helpful.
2) SPI Firewall that allows and translates FTP protocol over the gateway. My current router fails at this task and the result is a half working FTP server that most cannot access.
3)Wireless support(doesn't have to me N or anything specific, just enough for laptop web access)
I've had good experience with linksys and would prefer to stay with them, but I am open to other suggestions as well. Any feedback is appreciated.

Hi... you can go for any WRT54G, WRT54GS or WRT54GX series of router. All these routers has SPI firewalls and you can block the sites with url as well as keywords. If you also want to Create VPN tunnel along with FTP server, you can go for WRV54G router.

  • Camcorder purchase recommendations?

    Noob to iMovie...(sorry)
I'm trying to pick out a hard drive-based camcorder for amateur home movie use (new baby on the way). I figure hard-drive is easier to use with the iMac rather than converting from DVDs, etc.
I've noticed that some articles state that you have to connect your hard drive cam corder to the mac using firewire otherwise iMovie won't recognize it. Is that right? And I've heard problems with getting Sony cameras recognized. True?
Any advice is appreciated. Price range is $500-$1000.

Just throwing in my two cents based on past experience. I have a HP point and shoot digital camera that also takes video clips. While it's a nice function to have, you lose the sound when you import the video into iMovie for the reasons Sue mentions.
I just upgraded both my digital camera and digital camcorder, and did quite a bit of research before purchasing. The camcorders that record on DVD do not import into iMovie (at least based on the research I did). I only found one model of digital camcorder that burned directly to hard disc, so was reluctant to even try that format.
As for the digital camcorder, I own a Cannon, but wanted to upgrade to a better camera, so purchased the Panasonic GS 500. It is fabulous. It has optical stabilization and shoots well in low light. The color is excellent and it is by far the best camcorder I've owned to date.
I also purchased a Nikon D80 SLR digital camera and can't tell you how fabulous it is - I feel like I've died and gone to heaven. It shoots 3 frames per second which is fabulous for action shots.
If finances constrain you to one choice, which is probably the case with a new baby on the way, I'd recommend putting your dollars into an excellent digital camera that will last. Having three kiddos, I can tell you the video is great, but it's the pictures we look at more often. You can always borrow a camcorder from a good friend to make sure you have video of all stages, but you need that camera at hand immediately when s/he smiles for the first time . . .
    Congratulations and good luck!

  • Heat (15 vs. 17), and purchasing recommendations

I think it's time to spend some money and get myself the MBP finally. I know there is heat dsicussions all over the board but I was wondering if the heat issues tend to be for the 15 or the 17 inch or pretty much the same for both. Also I was wondering if it was recommended to order over the internet or purchase it at an actual apple store. I don't really like having my computer bouncing around in the back of a truck, but I also would like the most recently made unit. Just wondering what recommendations people might have with store bought vs. internet.

Ok people give me some credit here. I know one way or another the computers get transported via trucks or airplanes or whatever, I realize that. However I thought there might be greater care taken of the products shipped to stores. Not a huge concern of mine, just wondering if anyone had any opinions one way or another.
As far as the heat, this won't keep me from buying one, I already know I want a 17 inch, I have seen both first hand. I've seen about 5 different 17 inch computers and only one of which was REALLY hot on the bottom when I checked it out.
So I guess it's somewhat a matter of luck when I order. Again just wondering if anyone had any opinions on store bought vs. internet ordered since I have always ordered online (I've only been a Dell user up until now).
Heat won't be the deciding factor in buying one or which one, that is stupid, just was curious if people knew which one it pertained to more since the 17 is bigger and there is more space for the heat to go, but on the other hand it is more powerful, so I was curious.
Also, I've read stuff on this temperature paste stuff, which I haven't really heard of before. If my computer is hot could an apple store take care of faulty paste or is this something I would want to re-apply myself? I am confident I could do it but if they can what the ****.

  • Used eMac purchase recommendations? (long)

I'm looking to buy an eMac for a friend and trying to decide between two options. They're both combo-drive:
    1. 1.25ghz with 1ghz ram with about 10 months left on the Applecare warranty;
    or
    2. 1.25ghz with 256 ram with basically zero mileage on it but no warranty (it's owned by a family friend who I know tried it for about a week and then went back to her old computer.)
Option 2 would be a little more expensive, plus more memory would be needed. I'm leaning toward 2 because hey, it's brand new, but I'm concerned about the lack of warranty.
I've run Hardware Test on it, got online, played around with the applications, and there are no issues. Is this about all I can do to test it out?
Also, how much of a factor is usage? Option 1 has been in use every day with some bigger applications- is it more likely to fail sooner? I realize there's no way to predict longevity, and from my own experience I know that Macs last forever, but I'm not familiar with eMacs and maybe there are some issues that I'm not aware of with them.
Note also that my friend plans to use this for a long time. She had an older eMac for many years that she loved before it got stolen, and doesn't do anything more intensive than email-internet-digital photos.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks so much.
    Tracy

I'll second PT's advice; go for the larger RAM and the remaining warrenty. That the other computer was in use mainly means several thousand hours on the hard drive, but the mean expected life for the hard drive is measured in the hundreds of thousands of hours. The one not used much, if it's been sitting on a shelf somewhere, likely needs a replacement PRAM battery by now (although that's a trivially easy replacement; see eMac - Do-It-Yourself)
You may want to check the eMac serial number against the ranges cited in eMac Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues

  • Router Purchasing Recommendations

On my home PC(Win ME, DSL) I have connected a Microsoft MN-500 router.  I use a laptop(win XP) with the MN-500 wireless adapter card.  I have  problems with this router and would like some suggestions for a Linksys router and adapter card.  Thanks.

Some of your problem will be the Windows ME.  Microsoft stopped supporting this product in July 2006.
Likewise, many vendors, including Linksys appear to have stopped writing software for Windows ME.
So, with many of the newer Linksys routers, you will not be able to use any of the "Easy Install" software if all you have is Windows ME.  Likewise, you will probably have trouble finding Windows ME drivers for any of the newer wireless n adapters.
Access to the router's setup web pages, via Internet Explorer, might work, allowing you to setup the router, but even this is not guaranteed.
Since Microsoft has not supported Windows ME for more than 1.5 years, then any security holes that have been found, have not been patched.  Therefore using Windows ME poses a security risk when you connect to the Internet.  My advice is to upgrade your operating system to at least Windows XP, SP2.  This should also eliminate some compatibility problems that you are having.  Perhaps even your existing router and wireless card will start working.
If you are insistant on staying with Windows ME, then I would suggest you stick with some of the older wireless g routers and wireless adapters, and make sure you can get Windows ME drivers and software before you buy.

  • How to setup initial purchase prices in item master.

How can I setup my purchase prices for the items which I have not purchased yet? I am running MRP wizard to get the purchase recommendations when I convert them to purchase orders or even on the recommendation list the prices are coming up zero. I do not want to setup price list since the prices are keep changing. Please note that this is only for the items which we have not purchased yet. Seems it works okay as soon as we do inventory transactions (goods rec or inventory rec).
Please let me know if anyone has come across to this situation.
    Tkx

That is right.  Nothing changed. The only differences are more transactions recorded. All zeroed out themselves.  I have done it couple of times.
You can check the item posting history and got two postings such as +1 and -1. That is all.

  • Project material requirements to consider plant stock first

In some ERP systems, we have project specific BOMs and when the requirements are exploded and netted, the system first tries to see if the demand can be met from plant stock. If full or partial demand can be met from the plant stock, the system recommends a stock transfer order from general (plant) inventory to the project.
Any unmet requirement generates a project specific 'mrp-planned' order (purchase or production recommendation). This way, the planners and financial can see what existing plant stock can be used for a project and they can use this info for financial planning. Once the planner determines that the existing plant stock is usable for the project, he/she can confirm and 'execute' the transfer order which prings the plant stock to the project stock. For engineering or technical reasons (single lot date code requirements) the planner can choose not to accept the stock transfer recommendation (either fully or partially) and manually create purchase recommendation to cover the quantity.
I have read some posts here but it is not clear that IN SAP PS if the collective indicator is set (or not set), would one be able to see, either directly or indirectly, what plant stock is recommended to be transferred as project stock?
Can the behavior of described ERP system be modeled?
    Thanks, experts.

  • Limiting which songs the iTunes Genius references

Two related questions about iTunes and "Genius":
First, how do I restrict which songs get shuffled in the Genius Playlist (left hand pane of iTunes, under Playlists). The "iTunes DJ" lets me pick a playlist (I use one with 4+ Stars) as a source, but the Genius seems to occasionally go for really deep cuts. Is there some rhyme or reason to what it pics out of my iTunes library?
Second, how do I limit which songs in my iTunes library from the "Genius Just For You" pool of songs (right hand pane of iTunes)? Every year in December I buy some Christmas songs for the kids but I have no use for those the other 11 months of the year. Even though they are all unchecked, the "Genius Just For You" insists on recommending Christmas songs in July.

Nope, not listening to Christmas music in July, LOL!
I thought I figured out, for example, playing Bruce Springsteen's "Rosalita" or Tom Petty's "Breakdown" would trigger the Christmas songs purchase recommendation in the Genius Sidebar (on the right) since I have Christmas songs from both artists, but now I can't recreate it. I also tested the "Genius sidebar could not find matches for your specific selection" lists, but its not there either. Strange...
As for the Genius playlist, I looked a lot harder at the matches and I guess they make more sense than I originally thought. Not that one song is necessarily like another in the playlist, but there is a general theme (fairly repeatable on both iTunes and on my iPhone OBTW) for all the songs in the list. I guess I just have some really deep cuts and eclectic tastes, it probably makes picking a list more challenging than the average iTunes library. LOL!
Thanks again, I appreciate the response.

  • 508-compliant hot spots impossible?

I'm trying to reach a definitive answer for a decision on
whether to purchase/recommend Captivate to my client.
I trying to create Section 508-compliant hot spots over an
existing screen shot (i.e., to simulate text hyperlinks that a
screen reader such as JAWS will read). Exploring my options with
click boxes and buttons, here's what I've found:
    1. Click boxes do not allow alternative text.
    2. Text buttons are the only button type that allows
alternate text, but the text cannot be made transparent, so they
are useless if I want to use them as hot spots.
Therefore, I've concluded Captivate cannot simulate text
hyperlinks that will be read by a screen reader. Can anyone prove
    me wrong?

Clinton, thanks for the suggestion of trying NetSpot. The application sounds like it might be helpful for general network assessment although I'm not sure if it can provide much assistance in this situation.
I believe the internet connectivity issues I'm experiencing have more to do with whatever kind of "sensing"  that the router/hotspot uses. Generally when I go to a new hotspot, after choosing it in my list of avalable networks, a hotspot window will automatically open asking for my agreement to the terms of useage. That never happened at the hotspot I was having trouble with. I was able to choose the hotspot, had an excellent signal strength and was assigned an IP but never got any further than that.
So I'm not sure what NetSpot will be able to do for me in that situation but I'll download it and try it.

  • I need recommendations in purchasing an external hard drive, to back up everything in my computer. What brand and Size?

    I have a mid 2010 iMac, version 10.8.2, memory 4GB, 1TB sata disk.
Apple sent me an e-mail last year stating that my imac maybe affected to a recall. They said I have to back up my computer before sending it in to them. So its a great excuse to purchase an external hard drive.
But I am clueless. I would like to know what brand and size of memory is recommened for my imac and my needs. I will be mostly be backing up homevideos and alot of pictures, music, and some documents.
If someone could also explain about time machine? I guess its a whole separte thing from your media. I also would like to keep it affordable. I just purchased an external hard drive from www.macmall.com Seagate Backup Plus 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Drive - Black (STBU1000100).
But I don't know if that was a really great choice because for it to work with time machine I have to reformat certain things, and Im not sure if I would like to have that hassle.
I also wanted to know whats the difference between usb 3.0 and firewire. I read some forums saying that if you are to transfer videos you need to use firewire, and some agreed disagreed. Is that true?
    Please help!?
I definitely would like to know what brands of external hard drives are highly recommended and good at price. The one I purchased is it any good?
    Thank you!

Where is the insurance and original Edge Agreement from September?  No one in Verizon knows. I purchased (rented) a Galaxy S4 through the Edge program, with the $5.00 insurance/protection plan (that the sales associate handling the purchase on the phone recommended),which is no longer valid!  2 months after getting the Edge device, I go to make a claim and Asurion will not honor it because I am not covered; however, all the order confirmation receipts emailed and physically sent with the device show the addition of insurance when I signed up for the Edge program.  According to Verizon (via live chat with 'Nicole'), this $5 protection plan no longer exists and the order numbers I have on my paperwork (multiple documents) are invalid in the Verizon system.  For over a week, I have spent more than 10 hours on the phone, live chat and in the store trying to get some sort of resolution and the customer service reps just put me on hold or promise to "call me back within 30 minutes after they speak to a supervisor" and (surprise!) they never return my call.  Or they send me to the store to show proof of my documents, but then those associates cannot help either.  Also, the 'Edge Agreement' in my profile has the wrong device (and serial #), wrong payment amounts and no mention of the 'consumer protection plan'  on it, which is listed on the order confirmation sent via email and with the actual Edge device on September 23.  Obviously, there was some sort of glitch or mistake on Verizon's part, but NO ONE WILL EVEN TRY TO ACCEPT THAT FACT!  WHY WON'T ANYONE GET BACK TO ME WITH SOME SORT OF EXPLANATION FOR ANY OF THIS?!  Is it typical for Verizon to do away with a service (i.e., $5.00/month protection) and not inform the customer of this?  And is it company policy to be as unhelpful as possible to a paying customer who needs assistance when there is cleary something wrong on your end?  And finally, am I really suppose to believe that Verizon customer service has no email addresses or fax machines so a customer can send you proof of what is on the receipt you sent and that I have to take more of my time to go to the actual store?!  Finally, does anyone at Verizon even read these messages or even give a F@#k about the customer as long as they keep making money?!

    RLites22,
I can understand your concern about the insurance you have on the line. I want to make sure that I put a fresh pair of eyes on your account to find out exactly what is going on. I did send you a Direct Message. Can you please respond back to me in the direct message so we can go over the account specifics. I really hope to hear back from you soon.

  • Get a wrong price  when creating a Purchase Order in order recommendation

    Dear all
I meet a strange problem .I have already set a gross price list for Item 'A' . When I create a purchase order in Purchase Order Window,It will calculate a unit price (net price) according to the  gross price list  automatically .But when I create a purchase order in Order Recommendation Window,It will get a unit price as same as the gross price in predefined gross price list. They should not be equal in fact.

    Dear Anna Shao
1 .Our SBO is version 2007B
    2. The Decimal of Amount is 2 and that of Price is 6
    3. Vat rate is 17%
    4. The gross price is not small, the problem is that the difference is not small either.Sometimes  it's bigger than 0.1 RMB.I can give you the example.
LineNo     ItemCode  Quantity  UnitPrice       VatRate      GrossPrice     LineTotal     GrossTotal
    1            A     10         299.145299    J1(17%)      349.995299      2991.45      3499.95
    2            A     10         299.150000    J1(17%)      350.000000      2991.45      3500.00
    3            A     10         299.150000    J1(17%)      350.010000      2991.50      3500.10
If you set the unit price list for ItemCode 'A', you will get the result like row 1 above.
If you set the gross price list for ItemCode 'A' ,you will get the result like row 2 above.
If you do not set any price list for ItemCode 'A'  and you just set the unit price 299.150000 in the purchase order, you will get the result like row 3 above.
The perfect one is row 2.It is just what  our customer needs. So they set the gross price list for ItemCode 'A'.  But another problem occured when using MRP order recommendation. It is the one why I post a thread, just as I have descripted at first
