Purging Policies in Oracle 10g

Hi All,
I m going to implement purging policies and variuos purging methods on tables in database. kindly suggest me what are the variuos methods we use to purge the data in table. pl also advise me what are the variuos purging policies which can be implement on the tables...
waiting reply from ur end...
Regards,
Sanjeev

Hi,
I want 2 apply the purging on the tables with some frequency of time like monthly,half yearly and so on.
Now is there any specific policy on applying them or how can we handle this activity.please suggest me like creating backup table and then truncate the data or creating one proc and call that proc in a oracle job...
What is the best way to perform this activity,i can't understand how to start this activity..
Thanks & Regards,
Sanjeev

  • How to archive and Purge in Oracle 10g based on data

    Hi,
    Our requirement is that based on some rules stored in static tables we want to perform Archiving, purging and compression of data in Oracle 10g.
    Can anyone guide me to proper information material for how to go about this?
    Thanks!
    Avinash.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the information.
    But this traditional way of doing is archiving is for maintenance and backup operations.
    We want to have this process online, without taking db offline. In this case will this approach work?
    In our case, the rules can be like -
    1. For table 'A', if rows exceed 10Million, then start archiving of the data for that table.
    2. For table 'B', if data is older than 6 motnhs start archiving of the data for that table.
    3. Archiving should be on for 15 minutes only after that should pause, and should resume whenever user wants to resume.
    4. Archiving should start on specified days only... ETC...

  • Oracle 10G New Feature........Part 1

    Dear all,
    from last couple of days i was very busy with my oracle 10g box,so i think this is right time to
    share some intresting feature on 10g and some internal stuff with all of you.
    Have a look :-
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Oracle 10g Memory and Storage Feature.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    1.Automatic Memory Management.
    2.Online Segment Shrink
    3.Redolog Advisor, checkpointing
    4.Multiple Temporary tablespace.
    5.Automatic Workload Repository
    6.Active Session History
    7.Misc
    a)Rename Tablespace
    b)Bigfile tablespace
    c)flushing buffer cache
    8.ORACLE INTERNAL
    a)undocumented parameter (_log_blocks_during_backup)
    b)X$ view (x$messages view)
    c)Internal Structure of Controlfile
    1.Automatic memory management
    ================================
    This feature reduce the overhead of oracle DBA.previously mostly time we need to set diff oracle SGA parameter for
    better performance with the help of own experience,advice views and by monitoring the behaviour
    of oracle database.
    this was just time consuming activity.........
    Now this feature makes easy life for oracle DBA.
    Just set SGA_TARGET parameter and it automatically allocate memory to different SGA parameter.
    it focus on DB_CACHE_SIZE
    SHARED_POOL_SIZE
    LARGE_POOL
    JAVA_POOL
    and automatically set it as
    __db_cache_size
    __shared_pool_size
    __large_pool_size
    __java_pool_size
    check it in alert_log
    MMAN(memory manager) process is new in 10g and this is responsible for sga tuning task.
    it automatically increase and decrease the SGA parameters value as per the requirement.
    Benefit:- Maximum utlization of available SGA memory.
    2.Online Segment Shrink.
    ==========================
    hmmmmm again a new feature by oracle to reduce the downtime.Now oracle mainly focus on availablity
    thats why its always try to reduce the downtime by intrducing new feature.
    in previous version ,reducing High water mark of table was possible by
    Exp/imp
    or
    alter table move....cmd. but on these method tables was not available for normal use for long hrs if it has more data.
    but in 10g with just few command we can reduce the HWmark of table.
    this feature is available for ASSM tablespaces.
    1.alter table emp enable row movement.
    2.alter table emp shrink space.
    the second cmd have two phases
    first phase is to compact the segment and in this phase DML operations are allowed.
    second phase(shrink phase)oracle shrink the HWM of table, DML operation will be blocked at that time for short duration.
    So if want to shrink the HWM of table then we should use it with two diff command
    first compact the segment and then shrink it on non-peak hrs.
    alter table emp shrink space compact. (This cmd doesn't block the DML operation.)
    and alter table emp shrink space. (This cmd should be on non-peak hrs.)
    Benefit:- better full table scan.
    3.Redolog Advisor and checkpointing
    ================================================================
    now oracle will suggest the size of redo log file by V$INSTANCE_RECOVERY
    SELECT OPTIMAL_LOGFILE_SIZE
    FROM V$INSTANCE_RECOVERY
    this value is influence with the value of FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET .
    Checkpointing
    Automatic checkpointing will be enable after setting FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET to non-zero value.
    4.Multiple Temporary tablespace.
    ==================================
    Now we can manage multiple temp tablespace under one group.
    we can create a tablespace group implicitly when we include the TABLESPACE GROUP clause in the CREATE TEMPORARY TABLESPACE or ALTER TABLESPACE statement and the specified tablespace group does not currently exist.
    For example, if group1 is not exists,then the following statements create this groups with new tablespace
    CREATE TEMPORARY TABLESPACE temp1 TEMPFILE '/u02/oracle/data/temp01.dbf'
    SIZE 50M
    TABLESPACE GROUP group1;
    --Add Existing temp tablespace into group by
    alter tablespace temp2 tablespace group group1.
    --we can also assign the temp tablespace group on database level as default temp tablespace.
    ALTER DATABASE <db name> DEFAULT TEMPORARY TABLESPACE group1;
    benefit:- Better I/O
    One sql can use more then one temp tablespace
    5.AWR(Automatic Workload Repository):-
    ================================== AWR is built in Repository and Central point of Oracle 10g.Oracle self managing activities
    is fully dependent on AWR.by default after 1 hr, oracle capure all database uses information and store in AWR with the help of
    MMON process.we called it Memory monitor process.and all these information are kept upto 7 days(default) and after that it automatically purge.
    we can generate a AWR report by
    SQL> @?/rdbms/admin/awrrpt
    Just like statspack report but its a advance and diff version of statspack,it provide more information of Database as well as OS.
    it show report in Html and Text format.
    we can also take manually snapshot for AWR by
    BEGIN
    DBMS_WORKLOAD_REPOSITORY.CREATE_SNAPSHOT ();
    END;
    **The STATISTICS_LEVEL initialization parameter must be set to the TYPICAL or ALL to enable the Automatic Workload Repository.

    Benefit:- Now DBA have more free time to play games.....................:-)
    Advance version of statspack
    more DB and OS information with self managing capabilty
    New Automatic alert and database advisor with the help of AWR.
    6.Active Session History:-
    ==========================
    V$active_session_history is view that contain the recent session history.
    the memory for ASH is comes from SGA and it can't more then 5% of Shared pool.
    So we can get latest and active session report from v$active_session_history view and also get histortical data of
    of session from DBA_HIST_ACTIVE_SESS_HISTORY.
    v$active_session_history include some imp column like:-
    ~SQL identifier of SQL statement
    ~Object number, file number, and block number
    ~Wait event identifier and parameters
    ~Session identifier and session serial number
    ~Module and action name
    ~Client identifier of the session
    7.Misc:-
    ========
    Rename Tablespace:-
    =================
    in 10g,we can even rename a tablespace by
    alter tablespace <tb_name> rename to <tb_name_new>;
    This command will update the controlfile,data dictionary and datafile header,but dbf filename will be same.
    **we can't rename system and sysaux tablespace.
    Bigfile tablespace:-
    ====================
    Bigfile tablespace contain only one datafile.
    A bigfile tablespace with 8K blocks can contain a 32 terabyte datafile.
    Bigfile tablespaces are supported only for locally managed tablespaces with automatic segment-space management.
    we can take the advantage of bigfile tablespace when we are using ASM or other logical volume with RAID.
    without ASM or RAID ,it gives poor response.
    syntax:-
    CREATE BIGFILE TABLESPACE bigtbs
    Flushing Buffer Cache:-
    ======================
    This option is same as flushing the shared pool,but only available with 10g.
    but i don't know, whats the use of this command in prod database......
    anyway we can check and try it on test server for tuning n testing some query etc....
    SQL> alter system flush buffer_cache;
    System altered.
    ++++++++++++++++++
    8.Oracle Internal
    ++++++++++++++++++
    Here is some stuff that is not related with 10g but have some intresting things.
    a)undocumented parameter "_log_blocks_during_backup"
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++
    as we know that oracle has generate more redo logs during hotbackup mode because
    oracle has to maintain the a complete copy of block into redolog due to split block.
    we can also change this behaviour by setting this parameter to False.
    If Oracle block size equals the operating system block size.thus reducing the amount of redo generated
    during a hot backup.
    WITHOUT ORACLE SUPPORT DON'T SET IT ON PROD DATABASE.THIS DOCUMENT IS JUST FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSE.
    b)some X$ views (X$messages)
    ++++++++++++++++
    if you are intresting in oracle internal architecture then x$ view is right place for getting some intresting things.
    X$messages :-it show all the actions that a background process do.
    select * from x$messages;
    like:-
    lock memory at startup MMAN
    Memory Management MMAN
    Handle sga_target resize MMAN
    Reset advisory pool when advisory turned ON MMAN
    Complete deferred initialization of components MMAN
    lock memory timeout action MMAN
    tune undo retention MMNL
    MMNL Periodic MQL Selector MMNL
    ASH Sampler (KEWA) MMNL
    MMON SWRF Raw Metrics Capture MMNL
    reload failed KSPD callbacks MMON
    SGA memory tuning MMON
    background recovery area alert action MMON
    Flashback Marker MMON
    tablespace alert monitor MMON
    Open/close flashback thread RVWR
    RVWR IO's RVWR
    kfcl instance recovery SMON
    c)Internal Structure of Controlfile
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    The contents of the current controlfile can be dumped in text form.
    Dump Level Dump Contains
    1 only the file header
    2 just the file header, the database info record, and checkpoint progress records
    3 all record types, but just the earliest and latest records for circular reuse record types
    4 as above, but includes the 4 most recent records for circular reuse record types
    5+ as above, but the number of circular reuse records included doubles with each level
    the session must be connected AS SYSDBA
    alter session set events 'immediate trace name controlf level 5';
    This dump show lots of intresting information.
    it also show rman recordes if we used this controlfile in rman backup.
    Thanks

  • An issue while installing oracle 10g express edition on Ubuntu 10.04-64bit

    Hi,
    I'm running into an issue while installing oracle 10g express edition on my Ubuntu 10.04-64 bit installed machine using oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb package. The issue actually came up when I was trying to reinstall the package after uninstalling it due to some problem I had with my login credentials. To elaborate further on it, the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script does not get created when I execute the debian package and thus i'm unable to configure the required credentials and stuff after the installation. I doubt whether this has something to do with the procedure I followed when uninstalling the previous package it. But what I did was just what's mentioned in the following [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/install.102/b25144/toc.htm] user guide published by oracle.
    Another important clue would be, the platform of my machine is amd64bit although I'm dealing with an installation package preferred for i386. But I believe it's the only thing available in the oracle software download section. Hence I had to use the --force-architecture option to install it. But after reading some post published on this forum, I've figured out that it does not affect the usual execution of the software. Anyway,  I would greatly appreciate some help on this matter.

    Hi,
    Finally I've managed to find a solution for this issue. Thanks a lot for all the replies.
    Here's how I got rid of it.
    Addressing all the facts one by one,
    1.The problem of not getting the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script generated was avoided
    by removing all the configuration files that were previously created while installing
    the product. The following command can be used to accomplish that task.
    *$ dpkg --purge oracle-xe*
    2.Next, Initially the password I used during the configuration process was "admin".
    Although I tried a couple of times installing the product providing the aforementioned
    password, the web UI kept prompting "Invalid Credentials" message not allowing me
    to login. But, this particular issue could be avoided by giving some other simple
    password.
    Finally, got it working and once again thanks a bunch for taking the burden of
    replying this thread.
    Cheers,
    Prabath

    Hi,
    Have a read of this thread which talks about the same issue and its solution.

    And if you are finding issues in the entering the Host credentials itself, you may need to log on as batch job. Follow thiese steps,
    +1. Go to control panel/administrative tools+
    a. click on "local security policy"
    b. click on "local policies"
    c. click on "user rights assignments"
    d. double click on "log on as a batch job"
    e. click on "add" and add the user that was entered in the "normal username" or "privileged username" section of the EM Console.
    +2. Go to the Preferences link in the EM GUI+
    a. click on Preferred Credentials (link on the left menu)
    b. under "Target Type: Host" click on "set credentials"

  • How to delete the recyclebin data  in oracle 10g

    i create one table.then i drop the that table.this table will be kept in recyclebin in oracle10g .how to remove table permanentley in oracle 10g.
    i used drop table table name and select * from tab;it will come two tables like
    BIN$kLM/ilgxTUil64ZsNG0l7A==$0.
    how to drop table permanentley.please give me steps.

    Hello;
    Use the PURGE statement to remove a table or index from your recycle bin and release all of the space associated with the object, or to remove the entire recycle bin, or to remove part of all of a dropped tablespace from the recycle bin.
    Remove a File From Your Recycle Bin: Example
    The following statement removes the table test from the recycle bin. If more than one version of test resides in the recycle bin, Oracle Database removes the version that has been there the longest:
    PURGE TABLE test;
    To determine system-generated name of the table you want removed from your recycle bin, issue a SELECT statement on your recycle bin. Using that object name, you can remove the table by issuing a statement similar to the following statement. (The system-generated name will differ from the one shown in the example.)
    PURGE TABLE RB$$33750$TABLE$0;
    Remove the Contents of Your Recycle Bin: Example
    To remove the entire contents of your recycle bin, issue the following statement:
    PURGE RECYCLEBIN;

  • Query on Recyclebin (Oracle 10g)

    Hi Gurus,
    Can you tell me the command to clear the Recyclebin in Oracle 10g.
    Thanks in advance

    [url http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/statements_9018.htm#i2152611]purge
    You want not to use Recyclebin, then you may try as follws
    alter system set recyclebin = off scope = both; -- 10.20
    alter system set _recyclebin = off scope = spfile; -- 10.01

  • What is the version of grant alter table, drop table to user in Oracle 10g?

    Hi,
    Oracle support "grant alter table and drop table" before, but I get the "invalid privilege" error in Oracle 10g. Oracle 10g have the "DROP ANY TABLE" and "Alter any table". Is these two means can drop and alter tables belonging to other users? How do I grant the total control (CRUD) of tables in the owner's schema to the owner in Oracle10g?
    Thanks,
    Jiang

    CREATE TABLE privilege grants complete control on owner's tables :
    SYS@db102 SQL> create user test01 identified by test01;
    User created.
    SYS@db102 SQL> grant create session, create table to test01;
    Grant succeeded.
    SYS@db102 SQL> alter user test01 quota unlimited on users;
    User altered.
    SYS@db102 SQL> conn test01/test01
    Connected.
    TEST01@db102 SQL> create table test(a number);
    Table created.
    TEST01@db102 SQL> alter table test add(b varchar2(100));
    Table altered.
    TEST01@db102 SQL> drop table test purge;
    Table dropped.
    TEST01@db102 SQL>

  • Auditing in Oracle 10g

    Hi,
    OS = HP Unix
    Datbase = 10.2.0.1
    My management want me to enable auditing at database level.....It means, once i enabled the auditing at db level...it captures all the uses login,logout, what they are doing at database..everything in sys.aud$ table, dba_audit_trail tables...right...
    If i enable it, i heard that there is performance problem...
    Friends please share your experience....how are you maintaining auditing at your companies...
    Please share your experience

    There are so many levels of enabling auditing.
    The "audit session" will be hardly noticed and will audit connections but as for auditing as you say "what they are doing" "everything" then you will consume large amounts of space and system resource and may need to move the AUD$ table from the SYSTEM tablespace into an AUDIT tablespace. How long will this audit data be kept; a purge job will be needed.? How much spare CPU capacity do you have. You will need to clear up the specific requirements from your management otherwise you will end up with GIG's of audit data very quickly. You may even want to think of placing it on own separate fast storage.
    http://www.stanford.edu/dept/itss/docs/oracle/10g/server.101/b10759/statements_4007.htm
    Review the examples in the manual.
    N.B. Oracle do support moving AUD$ but refer to metalink for details they have docs showing how to......

  • Q : Using column level VPD policies with Oracle Jdeveloper ADF BC ?

    For one of our big customer, we already successfully developped a new java application using Oracle Jdeveloper with ADF, ADF BC and the Virtual Private Database (VPD) with row level policies.
    Our customer has new business requirements that could be fullfilled using column level VPD policies.
    Has someone already successfully (or not) developped a business application using column level VPD policies with ADF, ADF BC on Oracle 10g R2 database and OracleAS 10g (10.1.2) ?
    Is it supported by Oracle ? what are the pitfalls, difficulties, problems you've met ?
    Is it a viable solution and if not, why ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Rémy

    Tomas,
    my 2 cent:
    if you know how to get the info from the db during run time you should be able to overwrite the frameworks message bundle look to get the description from the db instead of from the resource bundle.
    Or you load all descriptions from the db into a resource bundle and use the keys in the tooltip directly.

  • CSV(Comma Delimited) upload error in oracle 10g

    Hello,
    I used to upload a csv file in oracle 10g using Ms-office 2007 through windows xp system.
    But the same csv while I upload through Ms-Office 2010 through Windows 7 it reply back me with column missing and not entered.
    Can someone find me a better way to resolve this issue?????????????????
    I'm thankful if I get any resolution for this.

    Hi Sai,
    It seems you are updating certificate in a delivery channel which is being used in a validated (or may be deployed) agreement. Please retire/purge any deployed configuration which is using that delivery channel and also make sure no such agreement is in valid state(which is using this delivery channel).

  • Oracle 10g is stealing my processor at 10pm

    Hi All,
    I have a real time application running on the same server as Oracle 10g. I dont use the database during real time operation, only for persistant store of config data.
    At 10pm each night an Oracle process is consuming all CPU on one of the processors for a minute or so, and this is damaging my real time response times.
    Can anyone tell me what Oracle is doing here, how do I control it?
    Any help appreciated.
    Regards,
    Keith

    The AWR has been described (by Tom Kyte, I believe) as Statspack on steroids. AWR collects database statistics every 60 minutes out of the box (this is configurable), and this data is maintained for a week and then purged. The statistics collected by AWR are stored in the database. To properly collect database statistics, the parameter statistics_level should be set to TYPICAL (the default) or ALL.
    The Oracle database uses AWR for problem detection and analysis as well as for self-tuning. A number of different statistics are collected by the AWR including wait events, time model statistics, active session history statistics, various system and session-level statistics, object usage statistics, and information on the most resource-intensive SQL statements. Other Oracle Database 10g features use the AWR, including ADDM and the other advisors in Oracle Database 10g that we will discuss in this series of articles.
    If you want to explore the AWR repository, feel free to do so. The AWR consists of a number of tables owned by the SYS schema and typically stored in the SYSAUX tablespace (currently no method exists to move these objects to another tablespace). All AWR table names start with the identifier “WR.” Following WR is a mnemonic that identifies the type designation of the table followed by a dollar sign ($). AWR tables come with three different type designations:
    Metadata (WRM$)
    Historical data (WRH$)
    AWR tables related to advisor functions (WRI$)
    Most of the AWR table names are pretty self-explanatory, such as WRM$_SNAPSHOT or WRH$_ACTIVE_SESSION_HISTORY.
    Also Oracle Database 10g offers several DBA tables that allow you to query the AWR repository. The tables all start with DBA_HIST, followed by a name that describes the table. These include tables such as DBA_HIST_FILESTATS, DBA_HIST_DATAFILE, or DBA_HIST_SNAPSHOT.
