Pushing out WEP key and SSID

I was just curious if anyone had a way to push out wireless settings on
syncronization to a PPC. We use a 128-bit key just to prevent guest
access, and it would be nice to push it right out to the handhelds as they
import. Thanks!!!

  • Wifi has suddenly stopped working. There is an exclamation mark which takes me to network diagnostics. This asks me for network name and password. This is different from the startup wizard which only asked for a WEP key and modem name. What to do?

My wifi has suddenly stopped working on my iMac, after working fine for almost a year. There is an exclamation mark on the wifi bars and when I click it, it takes me to a network diagnostics page. This page asks me for my username and password for the wifi, which I don't have. It is different from the WEP key and modem name, which I originally used to set up my connection. I have not experienced any problems on all my other wifi-enabled devices. Ipod touch, iPad, MacBook all work fine. What should I do?

The name is the name of the network you created on the router. The password is the WEP password. You shouldn't be using WEP at all, as it's insecure and also seems to cause connection failures. Use WPA 2 Personal. If your router doesn't support it, get a new one.

  • Wep key and wpa does not work.

I'm trying to set up security for my router using wep or wpa but everytime I set it up, my key does not work. The router is suddenly disabled. I did exactly as the how to setup wireless security said. do u have to hard reset to get it to work. I've been trying to set security for three days. Your help is appreciated.

First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
For WEP, you must enter WEP "key 1"  (found in the router) into your computer, not the WEP password or passphrase.
For WPA or WPA2, enter the key (sometimes called password or passphrase) into your computer.
Note that for WPA or WPA2, use "personal", not "enterprise".
Also, nomenclature sometimes causes problems.  Note the following:
WPA   =  WPA with TKIP  =  PSK
    WPA2  =  WPA with AES  =  PSK2
Also note that Windows XP requires SP3 to run WPA2  ( = WPA with AES).
Also, each time you try a new encryption method, you must remove old settings from your computer.  To do this, do the following:
In the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.   Delete your current network (this will remove any old settings).  Reboot computer.  Return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your current network info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.  You should connect automatically (it can take up to two minutes).  If you still have trouble, in the computer, temporarily turn off your computer software firewall, and see if that helps.
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.

  • What is a WEP key and where do I find it?

Any dumbed down help would be greatly appreciated because I'm close to returning the base station time capsule thing. I can connect macs because I know the password, but friends with PCs can't connect, I can't connect a netbook or a blackberry because they all request this wep key. I can't find it and I don't know what it is. Sorry for being stupid, but I'm a loss. Thank you.

-Connect the ethernet form the windows PC to the Time Capsule.
-Update the Windows Computer to SP3 and then head to the Microsoft Update Support Site and then search WPA Patch or WPA 2 Patch
    -Download and Install the patch
-discount the ethernet from the Time Capsule and try to rejoin the wireless network
-If still having issues then change the Time Capsule security settings
Or change the security on the Time Capsule From WPA to WEP (Uses WPA By Default)
Step to do this. On Mac
-Open finder and head to the Application folder
-Once in Applications Folder Please find the Utility Folder and open it.
-Now that we are in the Utility Folder please find a application called *Airport Utility* (Not airport admin utility)
    -Please Open Airport Utility
-You should now see the time capsule on the left hand side of Airport Utility (AU)
-In The bottom left hand you will see a button that says *Manual Setup* please click on it.
-Once done reading the configuration file you should see the *Summary Page*
-Now there are some tab's please click on the *Wireless Tab*
-Now you should see lots of info don't worry we only need to change one thing and that the wireless security
-Right now it should say *WPA / WPA 2 Personal*
-PLEASE HOLD OPTION and use the MOUSE TO CLICK ON THE DROP DOWN FEILD
-Now you should see a a few security protocol Please select the *WEP (Transitional Security Network)*
-Enter a New Password this password may need to be 8 or 13 numbers / letters
    -Now Click UPDATE
    -Now you are using WEP
-NOTE: You may have to reselect your network using airport
-This Should Solve The Issues Let Me Know What Happen.

  • What is a WEP key and how do I find mine?

I'm trying to set up my Wi-Fi connection for my Nintendo DS, and in order to do so, I must enter my WEP key, however, I honestly have no idea what that is, or how to find it. I'm currently using a model wrt54gs v. 4

Try these steps to get the network key from the router. Open
an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 Leave username blank & in password use admin.Click on the Wireless tab. Now Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security.
Check the security mode and security key .

  • Macbook pros Internet Settings will not take my WEP key as my password.

I just purchased a new Macbook pro. I looged into the Macbook Help
Connecting to the Internet using AirPort ( since it says I have the Airport card).
    My current situation:
1.) I currently connect to the internet through my Verizon DSL router.
2.) My current router is setup with a WEP key and SSID.
3.) There is also a MAC filter setup for my router (every computer on my wireless network has it's mac address in the MAC filter).
    NOW My New Macbook pro:
A.) It says I have an AirPort card in my computer, and I decided to connect to the Internet wirelessly by using my wireless network that's connected to the Internet.
B.) It tell me that my wireless network that I'm joining is protected by a password I will need to enter it before I can join the network.
    My Question:
    • What does the Macbook mean by "password"?
    • Does it equate password with my current WEP key (note: All my other computers need to join the network is my WEP key)?
    • Why wouldn't it take my WEK key when I type it in?
    • Am I choosing the wrong network setup? I chose the DSL-modem. Should I choose the LAN instead?
    Please help!!
    Excited New Mac user

Many wireless routers expect the WEP key to be a hexidecimal number. Instead of choosing WEP Password under the Wireless Security pop-up menu, Choose WEP 40/128-bit hex. Hope this helps.

  • "Invalid WEP Key" Error on 7410 All-in-On Wireless Set Up

My 7410 has been connected wirelessly for over a year but I just installed a new router (Linksys N600) and can't get the wireless connection back up.  All other wireless devices are connecting to the new router.  Using WPA2-PSK[AES] security on router.  Using installation wizard on front panel of printer and it is locating network SSID fine.  But only allowing for WEP key and giving me error code every time it is entered.  Have tried to change length of key on router to 5 or 13 characters and also tried 10 HEX digits.  Have powered off/on the printer and restored to factory network settings.  No luck with anything.  The Cisco router I previously had installed was also an N router - no problems connecting the 7410 wirelessly but swapped it out because of too many lost connections.  Any advice?
    This question was solved.

If your WEP key is all alphabet then it is not WEP, it is WPA or WPA2.  As discussed above, this printer will not accept WPA2.
Get into your router settings and change your wireless security type to WPA or WPA/WPA2 (you can keep the same passphrase).

  • Help? Can I change my WEP key on my router?

    Hi All...
I'm a newbie to these forums and I have a question... Can I change my WEP key on my FiOS wireless router?  (Actiontec MI424-WR Rev. D)
My neighbor, who also watches our dog when we go on holiday, has been using my internet from his house.  He freely admitted this.  My FiOS is much faster than his throttled Comcast and since he's a power user (torrents) he frequently uses my internet connection for all his massive downloads.  His usage knocks me off PS3 and noticeably slows my internet speeds down.
I know he has my IP and WEP since he spends weeks at a time in my house.  I'd like to change my WEP key and keep it hidden from him.
How can I kick him off and prevent him from hopping back on?
    Thanks in advance.
    Emma

Well... theft of services issues aside since what your neighbor is doing is illegal ...
I agree with Justin.   Go with a WPA2 connection and use a reasonably long and complex password.    I'd change the SSID as well although that's not absolutely required.   Also make sure you change the userid/password on the router as well in case they know it.   Don't get wrapped up in hiding the SSID or turning on Mac authentication -- while they don't necessarily hurt, they don't add anything appreciable to the equation and just make your own life more difficult.
Now ... I'm going ask, are you even using the the wireless at all?  Perhaps you are using a hardwired PC to the router and really don't need the wireless?  If so, just go into the router and turn the wireless off. Your neighbor can't steal what isn't there.
Oh ... and it might be time to get the key back and find a new dog sitter.

  • My WEP key dissapears

ok i set up my wep key in netset and then i go to my wireless devices (nintedo ds) and then i enter in my wep key and it says its incorrect and then i went in to my router settings and my wireless security is at diabled so then i go to WEP and then i save but it tells you to put something in and then i put in the password that i want as my Passphrase and then it gives me all these numbers and letters in the keys, so then i go back to my nintendo ds and type in the password thats in my passphrase still wont work, so then i tried the ones in the key it worked but thats not that password that i want and you cant edit it, so i go back into netset and enter in my ssid and wep key passphrase and save it and it tells me everything is successful and i type in the password that i typed in netset into my nintendo ds and it still wont work! What should i do?

hi , the WEP encryption key that you generate using the passphrase is a "hexadecimal" key.....on the nintendo , there shoudl be an option for you to choose "hexa decimal" in order to enter the encryption key that's on the router...

  • WEP key issues

I have been successfully using wireless over an unsecured network. Then I tried to connect to my home network with a WEP key, and, following this post I managed to get it to work with
sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid MYESSID key [1] XXXXXXXXXX
    sudo dhclient wlan0
After rebooting and suspending successfully several times, I suspended again and got
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument
whenever I tried the iwconfig command. (This was the error message I had been getting previously, before putting [1] in the iwconfig command.) Now, dhclient just hangs. I am really confused why this suddenly stopped working. I didn't do any updates between when it was working and when it wasn't. I don't know where to look for more specific error messages; dmesg and /var/log/syslog.log are unhelpful.
Using [2], [3], or [4] instead of [1] prevents the error message from being output, but dhclient also hangs. In either case, iwlist wlan0 key lists all four keys as "off", even though I tried setting iwconfig wlan0 key on. Is this supposed to happen?
My card is BCM4322 and I am using broadcom-wl from the AUR.
    Any insight would be appreciated!

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • How do I find my WEP key on my macbook pro?

I am trying to hook up my blu ray player and it says that I need a WEP key and every time I put in my wifi router password it will not take it. It says The number of characters is invalid. Please check your entry and try again. My question is can I find the WEP key through my laptop and if so how do I find it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You don't have a WEP key. Your security is set up using WPA or it is not set up for security at all.

  • Help locating WEP key?

I am using a linksys router and I have misplaced the WEP key and I am trying to set up a new home network.
I have typed in ipconfig in the run box and saw that the ip address seemed to be listed there, then I typed that ip address into the url bar in the hopes to reach my routers home page, but as soon as I hit 'go' on the url it adds a http:// in front of the 192. etc and gives me a google search results?
I know I am not an idiot, I know I am putting in the url and not the google search box, so what on earth am I doing wrong?
I need the routers home page to find my WEP key right?

I did try pulling the power but when you say reboot are you talking about a hard reset by pressing the reset  button?
