PV2012 locals sometimes don't behave well...

Here's one example:
The squiggles are due to local paint with highlights = -30.
Note: global highlight reduction of same, or greater strength, does not result in so much darkness, nor so much desaturation.
Note2: marked darkening/grayness/desaturation occurs even at much lower values for -highlights, e.g. -5 (I increased value to exagerate the problem).
Here is the raw+xmp, zipped:
http://www.robcole.com/LrForumSupport/20120505RC193027NB4328.O.zip
I have noticed many other less extreme but similarly-flavored cases.
Others have reported similar "unexpected" (to the layman) behaviors too, e.g.
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1214206
(see posts about white bed-sheet made "gray-ish" by applying -exposure local, such did not occur when reducing exposure globally)

[edit]:
OK, after more experimental painting, I see that the grayness is really only in the parts that were nearest to over-exposure - which was the *only* part painted initially (I think you tried to tell me that - sorry it took so long for me to arrive there...). Still, I'm not sure why the color would be so different in the brightest parts like that, I mean *none* of the channels were blown, right? Oh well, at least I have a better handle on it than I did before.
Question: it was near-to-impossible to get the paint to lay down the same way as originally painted - has there been some change to the paint-flow algorithm, or was it just me...?
[/edit]
[edit #2]:
OK, so I was pretty much wrong about part 2 also, wasn't I? - local effect and strength is close to the global... Cr@p - I hate being wrong! . The bottom line is that the behavior of highlights slider when the tonal distribution is as it is in this photo is very "squirrelly" (for lack of a better word) - highlights adjustment is extremely sensitive and reaches way past the midline into the shadows - way more so than exposure does, which seems counter-intuitive, but is not entirely out of character for pv12, this is just a very extreme case...
[/edit #2]
Anyway, here are some snapshots which illustrate the phenomenon
http://www.robcole.com/Rob/Personal/Pictures/LrForumSupport.cfm?embedSWF&openDir=Bad%20Moo n&openFile=20120505RC193027NB4328.O._v_Copy%201.jpg
Note: you may have to context-click the link and choose "Open Link in New...".
Tip: use the big button, the full button, and the i button; click the next button repeatedly to compare.
[edit #3]:
Original settings, with snail trails:
note: Global basics did most of the heavy lifting, but there is also a subtle tone curve and some other subtle adjustments.
As finished:
note: Global basics did most of the heavy lifting, but there is also a subtle tone curve and some other subtle adjustments.
Note: Nikon D300, ISO2000.
Explanation:
* Exposure was brought up to brighten the sky without relying soley on shadows slider.
* Contrast was brought down to decompress/debrighten moon and decompress/brighten dark tones: note: there are no midtones, per se, and contrast could be even more negative, but if too negative, there is a loss of richness that is hard to regain using +vib/sat/clarity...
* Highlights negative to de-brighten the moon, which was already over-bright, and to compensate for raised exposure.
* Shadows positive to assist exposure in brightening the sky.
* Whites negative to keep moon from being over-bright, -highlights alone does not suffice... (moon had "vividness" to spare, so to speak, and a little "dulling" via -whites was actually a plus in this case). Worth noting: -highlights darkens the sky too, a lot (even though not in the highlight tonal range as most people would think of it), -whites: not so much. It was primarily the "hyper-sensitive" (and non intuitive) behavior of the highlights slider, which made this photo such a challenge to edit in PV2012 (original edit was during Lr4 beta, before I had as much experience with pv12).
* Blacks must be negative to keep trees from being under-black and over-noisy - I wanted them to be silohuette black... Also, -blacks had the (in this case fortunate) side effect of bringing out (exagerating) the blue in the night sky.
* Clarity primarily to enhance moon detail (could have used local on the moon, e.g. radial gradient in Lr5). There was already sufficient tree/sky separation due to the -blacks +shadows combo, and one of the subtle locals was to decrease shadow strength around the tree/sky line, for a more natural look.
* Saturation because, well, I like color... (and strong negative contrast robs some color, no pun intended).
Note: I experimented with "less extreme" settings, and there were other combos that were ok-ish, but without strong adjustments, as I was able to make them, this photo just couldn't make the cut, as I judged it, and would have been discarded.
[/edit]
PS - I am open to seeing an interpretation of this photo which employs "less extreme" (more moderate) settings, if anybody else is willing to give it a whorl...

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor.
The many "failed" warnings that etrecheck sometimes spews mean nothing. Those warnings are not a reason to reinstall the OS, or to do anything else at all. They should be ignored.
The better your description of the problem, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • Creative Zen with keys that don't play well.

,Creative Zen with keys that don't play well.uHello all,
I have had a Creative Zen 6 GB for a couple of years. It is has not been a pretty picture. This product has been the most problematic mp3 player I have ever owned...but it has usually played music and I have been able to navigate the menus. A couple of months ago, the keys started to not respond very well. It almost seems like they are stiff and when I press them (not all, but most), they just don't do what they once did. If i keep on? mashing on the keys, eventually I can get it into working order enough to use, but what a royal pain this has been. I don't know if I should continue messing with it if there is physical damage, which it feels like. However, I have not used it that much and don't know what may have caused this, other than bouncing around in a gym bag.
Anyone have any thoughts before it goes to the scrap heap?

. It is physical damage & they just wear out. They wear out faster when they are pushed very hard. The control pad can be replaced. You can DYI or send to someone to repair. DYI? repair services

    Two things to try:
First, reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data by resetting.
If this does not work, set it up as new device, explained in this article:

If still no luck, your hardware might be damaged and the phone has to be serviced.

  • System texts don't look well

    Hi everybody.
My DD crash months ago.. so I had to replaced it. Since that, system texts and texts of apple applications don't look well. The texts lines seem one over other one.
Kindly I'm asking if some one know how to fix this disgusting issue?

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select
              File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

  • Mac Mail.app V.2.0.5 with OSX server's email don't play well sometimes

I have my own web, FTP, and email server. (OSX 10.4.4 Server). I've been managing my own server services since AppleShare V.6 .So I've done this a few times. I have set up an account for myself "nino" on the server that people email to, you know "[email protected]".
On my laptop I have Mac Mail.app set to log onto my server, via the internet, and to get and send emails. Sounds pretty normal right? Yep, it is except four or five times since I updated the server to 10.4.4., last December, Mac Mail.app simply stops receiving email from my account. Now I'm a pretty busy guy and email is my main source of communications. Plus get a healthy amount of junk mail. So I hear that familiar beep at least twice an hour - usually a lot more. I can always when this tell when this anomaly happens when two hours go by without something arriving in Mac Mail.app.
The catch here is the server is still accepting mail for my account. I can go to web mail, which I have set-up and working fine, and new emails are there! Mac Mail.app simple stops accepting them.
    I have tried:
    restarting both machines
changing the password to my account, on both machines
actually deleting my account from Mac Mail.app, restarting and creating my account again
Nada.... I can see emails adding up in web mail....grrrrrr.
The only way I know to resolve this is to, gulp, delete my account on the Server and set it up again. This seems to work but unless I've answered messages in web mail their gone! Poof. I do like to keep good records by saving and organizing business related emails. So when this happens I'm screwed.
    Any thoughts?

  • Safari don't work well

My safari (latest version) not go well with my MBP (lion OSX). I don't know why everytime i open a web, it become just words without image or colour. Somebody help me.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • HT6030 Mavericks 10.9.1 and Gmail still don't play well together: help!

I have 4 gmail acounts and Mavericks and iOS 7 still don't get along despite having the latest versions of everything.
Mail deleted one place still shows up in another.
Counts are totally wrong between my MacAir my iMac and my iPad and iPhone and appear totally random.
At times mail won't show up on the iMac or MacAir for days or even weeks when there may be hundreds of messages that show up in my web browser and sometimes on the iPhone and iPad, but it seems totally arbitrary and to make no sense when it does one thing or the other.
I have no custom settings on gmail, nothing strange, just use it in the most basic ways there are.
Anyone else still having this problem and what to do about it? It is no better from 10.9 to 10.9.1, and has been causing problems since the moment Mavericks was installed.
Come on, Apple! You have a $100 billion in the back: hire people who can code a mail program or talk with the people who coded Mail for Mountain Lion, as it worked just fine.

10.8 worked well with my Mac Mini (2009) connected to IOGEAR KVM model GCS1108. My mouse is from Redmond and the keyboard is a Goldtouch.
Mavericks has a problem with my KVM switch as well. It seems to be a USB problem.
Case 1: The Mini's video is connected to the KVM switch -- mini DVI port to DVI. If the KVM USB cable (known good) is connected, the Mini chimes at boot but no grey Apple logo appears. LCD remains blank white. Boot does not progress.
Case 2: The Mini's video is connected to the KVM switch, as before. If the KVM USB cable is NOT connected, the Mini chimes at boot, the grey logo appears, and boot proceeds normally. Video is fine. I  then connect the KVM USB cable to the Mini and use keyboard and mouse. KVM switching works as expected.
If the KVM USB cable is NOT connected but a keyboard and mouse are connected directly to the Mini, the boot sequence is normal. Video works.
The problem is not the hardware, all of which worked well with 10.8 (Mountain Lion). I would downgrade if Apple made 10.8 available from the App Store.

  • Imovie themes sometimes don't zoom into video

    Hi All,
I've had a good trawl of the web in general looking for the answer to this, but I think the question is so hard to word that it may be something that I just haven't searched correctly. Apologies if this is the case!
I use iMovie a lot, and I would say that I am fairly proficient with it, so I don't think it's bad implementation on my part. I'm using the version from iLife '11, updated to the latest, and this has happened over a number of update increments. I'm currently on Lion 10.7.2 but this happened under Snow Leopard as well. I'm running iMovie on a Macbook Pro 13" i5 early 2011. I have had so many good results with this machine that I can reasonably rule out hardware not being up to the job. All the video I edit is AVCHD.
The problem arises when I use the themes, let's say for example the comic book / newspaper theme. The opening scene, generated by iMovie shows the 'front page' with the titles I have input, and then should zoom in to the video which is playing in the middle. What I am finding is that quite often, this doesn't work correctly. The zoom happens, perfectly smoothly and nicely, but instead of finishing by filling the screen with the movie, it ends up on the top half of the movie and the bottom half of the title. This then disappears and the movie plays as normal.
When this happens I have tried a few things to correct. I have tried removing all but the top line of text in the title. I have tried removing the theme and reinstating it. I have tried all the obvious reboots etc. None of these seem to work. It seems that when it is going to happen with a particular project it is just going to happen and is unfixable. I have tried starting the project again from scratch and this seems to sometimes work. I'm tempted to think though that the bug happens at project creation and so staring again has the same probablility of success or failure as the first attempt.
I'd really appreciate anybody's thoughts or input on this as I think I have reached the point where I'm not looking at it in an intelligent fashion. Of course if anyone has a 'do this and it's fixed' answer, that would be even better!
    Many thanks for looking anyways.
    Cheers
    Dave

While I don't know the exact problem that could cause this, here's a few ideas.
If the clip you are trying to import is really large, you could be running out of disk space.
Use the activity monitor found in your Applications/Utilities folder.  This will allow you to see what your computer is doing while it's importing these movies.

  • Intel IMac sometimes don't launch Audio Instrum

    Hi!
Recently I purchased a Intel IMac 1.8 and an M Audio Midi One interface. As it's a very new machine, I decided to install the OS using the DVDs that came with the IMac, and then search for the upgrades at apple. Well, after installing everything, including LP7.2 full version and LP7.2.1 upgrade, I've noticied that sometimes some audio instruments don't launch, and when I try to close the project, logic crashes. Does anyone know something about it? I'm trying to work mainly with audio instruments, and I really can't get a job.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Windows sometimes don't redraw their contents

Sometimes, when I obscure a window by another one or switch desktops, some of my windows have "blank" areas.  When I then force the window to redraw somehow, like by clicking on something that changes its content, the window gets back to normal.  I've seen this happen for urxvt that uses Xlib directly, AFAIK, xfce4-panel that's GTK+ app and Kopete or KTorrent which use KDE toolkit -- so it doesn't seem to be related to any particular GUI toolkit.  I can't really reproduce it either.
This is a screenshot of what it looks like:
I don't really have an idea of what could be going on.   I'm not running any compositor or anything else that gives fancy looks -- just plain OpenBox.
If you can point me in some direction, you'll be welcome.

  • My Ipod is crazy, sometimes works and sometimes don't

This started two days ago, I was looking for one song when my ipod got frozen, so I thought of letting my ipod on until the battery was empty, but ten minutes later my ipod started to play again.
The next day I couldn't use it in my computer, it didn't recognized my ipod at all, so I disconected it, but again it was frozen, and again three times after that my ipod got frozen.
Today again with the same problem, my ipod sometimes gets frozen and sometimes works fine. The only thing even strange than that is that at the time my ipod is frozen you hear like the hard drive is seeking for something but it sounds really bad, like if the hard drive is stuck with something, and when finally the ipod got unfrozen again the sound but this time much harder than the first time, that is always the same way.
Well I need the help of somebody who can give me a hand and I will really apreciate that, and sorry about my english I don't know if I made a mistake but sorry again and I will like your help with my ipod.

Ok, this is a different thread, but almost exactly explains what happened with mine:
    "Backstory:
I let battery run all the way down to do a complete charge. Plugged it into computer and looked like it was charging eventhough it did not appear on the desktop. After ten min of charging or so, it restarted then shut down... then restarted and shut down.. repeatedly. It would go through about 5 of these "restarting" cycles before completely turning off... but then it would start the cycles again. It did this for about 30 min.
Finally after looking up some topics here, I decided to try disk mode. This was successful and I was able to charge the battery to full. BUT it still didn't appear on the desktop and I couldn't turn it on.
It is currently still in disk mode (with a check mark) with about half battery. (unplugged)"
So mine is also, still, in disk mode. I can plug the usb in and charge it, but i'm not sure whether to charge the battery or let it run out. I am also completely stuck in "Disk Mode" and I can't even reset it.
My computer recognizes when it is plugged in, because the little "safely remove hardware" dialog box comes up, but it does not recognise the IPOD. I have tried running the updater, it didn't recognise the iPod, and said "iPod service error". So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the iPod about 3 times all together, but that didn't work either.
Right now it is in black and white, and it has a black checkmark (backlight will not turn on) and says "ok to disconnect"... even though the usb is not plugged in.
I just bought this last week for my birthday, so I am fairly new to iPod. But I am very good with most electronics, but this has me completely stumped..
I can press any button, or any button combination, and nothing happens. The only thing that is working is the "hold" slider and when I plug in the usb.
If you helped me fix this, I don't know how I could thank you.

  • DVD created in iDVD don't run well in some DVD players

I recently edited a two hour wedding in Final Cut Pro 5.11 then made the DVD on iDVD using a Memorex DVD-R, after burning I tested in my DVD player and iMac and it ran well, then I took it to a TV/DVD combo and it freezed in several parts of the movie?
Why did this happened? Does it have to do with the export settings in Final Cut, or the burning settings on iDVD? or what?

Basically, you want to burn at 4x or lower for your DVD disk in order to minimize errors and be campatible with the most consumer DVD players. Some of the older DVD players have trouble with the higher burn speeds, and sometimes poor disk media can cause difficulties. Maxell or Verbatim DVD-R disks are the recommended media.
iDVD doesn't let you set burn speeds, but you can do it by using Roxio Toast or by burning your iDVD project via the Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility application on your iMac hard disk. The recommended procedure is to save your iDVD project to a disk image (an option in the File menu). All the encoding will take place as if you were burning a disk. When the disk image is completed, you can play it back on your screen using the DVD player application on your hard disk. The playback will display exactly as it would if you had burned a DVD disk. If everything is satisfactory, open your Disk Utility application in the Utilities folder. You will see your newly created disk image as an .img file in the pane that pops up. If it's not there, drag your disk image into the pane. Then select the disk image. Insert a DVD-R disk. The "Burn Options" will change to 4x speed. (Use 2x if it offers that option.) Click "Burn", and the disk will burn fairly quickly, because all of the encoding already has been done. Then see if your disk will play on your TV/DVD combo. You could also take it to a consumer electronics store (like Frys or Circuit City) and try playing the disk in several DVD players to check for compatibility.
I don't know anything about Final Cut, but I doubt that your use of that program is causing any problem because you were able to create a successful disk that played on your iMac DVD player. The issue is probably with your TV/DVD combo player.
There are experts on this forum more knowledgeable than I, and perhaps they will offer additional comment.
