Q failure to wake and resetting the PMU

Every once in a while (roughly once per week, on average) my MacBook will not wake from sleep, no matter what I try. The only recourse is to turn it off and back on again, which is a huge inconvenience.
This seems to be a very common problem, and I've found many posts on it online. A frequently offered piece of advice is to reset the PMU, as described here
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
However, this article states that resetting the PMU should be done only as a last resort, after one has tried to do things such as pressing the power button for 10 seconds.
Since my machine does respond pressing the power button 10 seconds, the above suggests that I should NOT attempt to reset the PMU.
My questions are: why is resetting the PMU regarded as something to do as a last resort, and would it be of any help for me to try it (considering that my machine does respond to pressing the power button for 10 seconds)?
Thanks!

Resetting the PMU does not affect the hard drive. Here's how:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
RAM chip contents vary depending on what you have open on your computer, and resets itself everytime you reboot the computer. The hard drive has its own swap file for RAM as well which varies with what is open, but it does not affect the contents of your data or applications. There are two kinds of RAM which confuses many computer novices:
The hard drive itself which is a spinning platter inside a rectangular case that looks much like an old LP player.
The RAM chips which are on a computer circuit board.
Only the hard drive stores actual data that you use and applications.
The RAM chips act as a buffer for multitasking applications, and the swap file on the hard drive act as an additional buffer.

  • Resetting the PMU

Two days ago, the electricity went out, and my Mac G4 desktop, OSX 10.4.11 was on Sleep and it too Shut down completely. Tried to start the computer, but nothing. Looked up problem in another computer and followed directions on what to do. I disconnected everything, pressed the PMU reset button, hooked up the keyboard & mouse and the computer started up, no problem. Today, the same thing happened, went through the same steps as above. (Here in south Florida we have frequent electricity outages). I thought the battery was the problem, but after starting up the computer, all my settings - date, time, etc., are OK. That indicates that the battery is OK, no? Any idea of why I have to reset the PMU restart button to turn my computer on again? Should I change the 3.6 volt battery? Thanks

If the battery is more than a couple of years old it may be ready for a change. Low batteries can cause strange startup problems in Macs that are not predictable, consistent, or logical in manifesting their woes.
If you have a digital multimeter you can check the condition of your present battery. It should read at least 3.2V if it is the 3.6V half-AA battery type. Ideally this should be measured while the battery is under load; added recommendation from Hans777:
I have recently found out that an exhausted battery will still indicate >3.6 V with a high internal resistance VM.
Checking incircuit: powercord disconnected press PMU reset button for >about 5 sec before measuring.
Checking outside: load the battery with a 1500 Ohm resistor when measuring.

  • Reset the PMU/firewire keeps failing after a bit

Ok, originally I was having trouble with a bunch of different functions after I replaced the internal battery and finally came to the solution of resetting the PMU button. I was experiencing trouble with the firewire ports before i reset everything also. Now all I have trouble with is the firewire ports not recognizing my external hard drive after I shut it down plug in another firewire device or audio front port device. I'm not sure what else i should do to resolve the whole issue. Help!?

Resolved!!! I followed the advice of article HT1939 about "Resetting Cuda/PMU on Power Mac": Disconnect ALL cables from the computer, including peripherals and power. I have disconnected the power cord last night and this morning I have pressed the Cuda button ONCE as described: do not press the button more than once before starting the computer up again. But the PM did not startup. I have opened it again and I have pressed it again once. PM MDD started fine, both the external firewire HD are correctly mounted on the desktop, but no internet connection. I have restarted with OS 9, opened I.E. 5.1 (how flashback!), internet started to work again as yesterday but now with the firewire HD on the desktop (thank you OS9).
Rebooted Leopard, now it is everything fine (net connection, firewire)
    Hope to help you.

  • Resetting the PMU daily

    Hi all,
Since three days ago, every day I need to reset the PMU because my iBook 800 wont boot up. After the reset, it works fine.
So, not sure what my question should be, is this like the beginning of something bad to happen or is normal, or what should I do?
I love this computer and I don't want to lose it.
    Thanks
    Luis

    Hi Ronda, all,
I have to add something, I guess I did wrong my testing.
Test #1, Leave computer off all night with battery in. Turn on with no power adapter only battery = failed -Needed to remove battery and do a PMU reset.
Test #2, Leave computer off all night with battery in. Remove battery, connect power adapter = failed - Needed to remove power adapter and do a PMU reset.
Test #3, Leave computer off all night with NO battery in. Connect power adapter = GOOD, no need to reset the PMU.
So, do you think there might be a problem with just the battery? The only thing I noticed, the battery holds about 2 hr of charge when is fully charged but if you look at the time remaining when is full charged, reads 5 hrs.
Thanks for all your help so far.

    Hello Sean,
It sounds like you are constantly needing to restore your phone because it keeps going into recovery mode. Usually putting a device into recovery mode and restoring it can help isolate an issue to your iPhone hardware if an issue persists afterwards. I would try manually putting it into recovery mode and restoring it 1 more time:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If that does not resolve it the symptoms indicate to me that it is a hardware issue causing this to happen and would seek service for it:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • Reversing and Resetting the Excise Invoice No. in Sales

    Hi Gurus,
Kindly give me solution to reverse and reset the excise invoice after billing.  The client has created manual invoice and manual excise nos. have been given for few documents and invoice has been despatched to the party.  When they are updating the same in SAP, the system shows that the excise document number already exists in the system due to which there is a mismatch in manually given number and SAP generated excise document number.  As the manual number has already been advised they want the same number to be in SAP.  Is there any possibility of resetting the SAP excise invoice number ?
    Sadashivan

    Dear Sadashivan,
I am just going through your message and its very surprising that you are entering excise invoice number manually while creating the exise invoice. As per my understanding you CANNOT assign external (as per you manually entering excise number) number ranges for CIN objects. The reason is excise invoice number should always be in order. If you are creating excise invoice by entering manually excise invoice then this is not SAP standard procedure.
Please check whether you are following the standard SAP functionality while creating excise invoice or not. Check whether you are using your own development?
Regarding resetting the number range in transaction SNRO or SNUM will not solve your purpose. As excise invoice is already been updated in different tables.
    Dear Lakshmipathi,
Kindly check this "resetting number ranges in SNUM", will give error message while creating excise invoice.
    Regards

  • Somebody has created an apple id using my gmail id. So I gave forgot password option and reset the password of the id. But for resetting the security questions, link is going to some other email id which is created by the other guy.How can I resolve this?

When I tried to create and apple id using my gmail account i found that somebody has already created an apple id using my gmail id. So I gave forgot password option and reset the password of the id. But for resetting the security questions, link is going to some other email id which is created by the other guy. Now the problem is that the other guy also can reset my password and access my account.
I contacted apple customer care and they are not ready to help me saying that I need to give information about the last device I logged in using this id. How can I give it when I did not create it?:) Also they are saying this account has been verified and that could happen only if someone has hacked my gmail account and verified the id using the link sent by apple.
Later I did some experiments and found that this is a security flaw from apple. Somebody has created the id and never used it(I tried to loggin to icloud and it was saying this account was not used it any apple device). The account became verified when I reset the password.(This is a bug, account should be verified only when we click on the verification link sent by apple).
The other mistake apple did is that they allotted my gmail account to someone before it's verified eventhough it cannot be used unless verified. Actually apple should allot the account id only after verifying the email address.
Apple customer care is not ready to help and I am tired of fighting with them. Can any of you guys suggest any means of getting back my gmail id to use it as apple id?

I don't think you're going to be able to. I would guess the other person used your address by accident, and when he found he couldn't access the account (because you'd changed the password) he abandoned it. Your GMail address is now locked to that account and even if it was changed you can't use it to create another.
You already have an Apple ID, which you use to log in here; you can use that to create an iCloud account if that's what you are trying to do. If you want to create a different Apple ID just get another free address such as a Yahoo one.

  • My iPod 5th gen is no longer charging. I've cleaned out lint, switched chargers, and reset the device more times than I can count. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to fix it, or if it's a lost cause.

I've had my iPod touch 5th gen for a little over 2 years now. a few weeks ago, I went to plug my iPod into the charger. After about 20 minutes I went to go get it so I could reply to texts and clear some notifications and I noticed that it was still at 20%. So I tried a different cord, different outlet, cleaned out any lint that might be in there, and reset the iPod more than once. Nothing worked. Eventually the problem corrected itself. But then it happened again a few days later. And then it happened just recently, and now it's happening again. In total it's happened 4 times, the first 3 times its corrected itself, but this time it's not. I'm not sure if there's anything else I can do, or if it's just a lost cause.

You won't lose any data unless you erase your hard drive.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c"key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it.When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've selected the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

How much data is being backed-up from each Mac?  (see what's shown for Estimated size of full backup under the exclusions box in Time Machine Prefs > Options).
Is there any other data on your Time Capsule, besides the backups?
Most likely, there just isn't room.  Time Machine may be trying to do a very large (or full) backup of one or both Macs, and can't.  Since it won't ever delete the most recent backup, there has to be enough room for one full backup plus whatever it's trying to back up now, plus 20% (for workspace).
Also see #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for more details.

  • Resetting the PMU with a non-Apple keyboard

Trying to help a buddy of mine do a PMU on his 20" G5 ALS, are their alternative IBM format keystrokes to the command-option-P-R sequence?
    Thanks.

What you are trying to do is reset the PRAM. Resetting the PMU doesn't need the keyboard at all: SMU.

Thanks for the quick response. No, I did not get any error messages or any terms-of-usage screen. The employee I told my problem to was not computer savvy either. She just suggested I move to different spots w/in the library to see if that would make a difference. It didn't. When I connected to the library WiFi it did change the Verizon 3G that is usually in the upper left corner to iPad with two to three emanating arcs. I may have to go to the library in the next town. I was able to connect to theirs in the past when I had to download something greater than 20 MB. Unless I really want it, I will probably not even try to download something more than 20 MB due to the hassle. Yeah, I may have been better off getting a normal desktop or laptop and getting WiFi at home. To do that now would mean having my iPad 2 and a desktop computer, which I feel is extravagant. (I know there are a lot of big spenders out there who got the iPad as additional gadget for fun. This is a rich country.) A Verizon rep told me I couldn't set up a WiFi router at home just using an iPad. So it seems like a person who just uses 3G is limited to surfing the net (not even much YouTube because it eats a lot of data) and using email. I read about an app that helps print wirelessly using 3G, but a reviewer said you had to be an engineer to get it done right. BTW, I like the Steelers. I'm old enough to remember Franco Harris and that blond guy whose name escapes me back in the '70s. Since I live in North Jersey I feel I have to support the Giants. But I know football about as well as computers.
