Qemu with kvm is very, very slow

Hi!
I first installed kvm by following http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kvm
And I also tried the "using qemu with kvm support" method from http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/QEMU
With both methods, a VM is very, very slow (when i start an iso, you literally see it render the things, and after that when you get the grub menu, it takes ages for the pointer to move if you press the arrow keys).
I'm on a Dell laptop with Intel C2D cpu with VT support (and enabled in bios, I checked)
[dieter@dieter-dellD620-arch ~]$ egrep '^flags.*(vmx|svm)|model name' /proc/cpuinfo

anyone an idea?

try qemu-kvm-0.10.5, it's the stable qemu with additional kvm support:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/kvm/fil … z/download
also, in the qemu monitor you can check to see if kvm is used with "info kvm" .. should return "kvm support: enabled"
finally, the grub menu is using old BIOS APIs and cpu pooling since it's running in 16bit mode with no drivers. It uses up 100% of one of my cores when I leave a VM on the grub menu. Make sure you run a serious OS soon and check performance there.
Thanks
- i am using 0.10.5 (this is the version that Arch has packaged)
- it says kvm enabled, and you're right, once it goes out of grub, it goes much faster!
- apparently my keyboard arrows are just plainly being ignored

  • Applet with JDBC runs very slow

I have recently created an applet which I am using to interface with a MS SQL Server 2000 database using JDBC. The server is running W2K Server, and a Tomcat web server.
There are some performance problems with this application. The volume of data being demanded by the database is very low, yet it runs very slow. More specifically, however, the application runs at a very fast pace for several seconds, then "stalls" for 10 -15 seconds.
The stalling of the application does not take place at the same place in the code all the time; rather it seems to be completely independent of what I am doing. Sometimes a particular operation takes 20 seconds to complete, but the next day the same thing only takes 20msec.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    sounds like network usage issues
hard to tell with no code and no idea how you're configured

  • CTAS with BLOB column very slow

    Hi,
I am creating a new table from backup table having BLOB type of data.
Table size for backup table is approx 250G (along with lob segment) and I am creating new table with predicate selectivity of 110 GB.
    Query used is "CREATE TABLE CLAIM AS SELECT /*+ PARALLEL(CLAIM_bkp_04,16) */ * FROM CWS_CLAIM_WORK_bkp_04 WHERE pxobjClass <> 'Claim-Controller' or pyStatusWork <> 'Resolved-Completed' ;
Even after using parallel degree of 16 for CTAS, peformance is very very slow.
Can anyone tell what's the reason for this behavior..
    Best Regards
    Naveen

  • Rendering and working with AE is very slow.

    Hey guys,
I'm running on Windows XP Pro, Intel Core 2 Quad CPU, Q6600 @ 2.40Ghz, Clockspeed; 2,40Ghz, 3GB RAM. Whenever I'm working in AE it's very slow to use in full resolution. When I lower the resolution I still have to wait for the preview screen to 'load'. This is very annoying in a work situation. Am I doing something wrong? My pc is very fast with other 'heavy'programs.

AE will auto-disable MP if it does not detect enough RAM. You can still toggle it, but AE won't use it in any case. You could only change that by flipping some switches in your BIOS (if it supports this) that will make your 4 cores appear as only 2 cores or one core even, but this has some other side effects like possibly requiring a full re-install of your entire system...
The disk cache should be located on the fastest disk in your system. Doesn't matter which one, as long as it has enough space and is permanently available. Even a network drive or external disk would work. The only requirement is to create a dedicated directory for it. you can call it "Mom" or "Popsi" - doesn't matter. Calling it "AE Cache" would be smarter, though. ;-)
As for the rest: Don't expect miracles. Processing an x number of pixels can take its time, especially with some effects and in 32bpc mode.
Also be aware that, while AE will handle it, some compressed formats do not lend themselves for working interactively. AE needs to conform them and it will take time to look up the correct time index. This is further complicated if you have lots of clips or rather long clips. You can improve these behaviors sometimes by capturing to different CoDecs or converting the footage.
Part of the problems also may come from the graphics card. Even without OpenGL, AE will use your hardware to decode certain formats if possible and also for accelerated drawing. If your graphics are not up to snuff, have a bad driver or simply are configured poorly, they may have the opposite effect and instead of accelerating your workflow slow it down...
Lastly, make sure your system is in good shape. Work off the fastest disks, clean them regularly of temporary files, defragment them and make sure their RAID/ SATA drivers and configuration are flawless.

  • Memory full with nothing running, very slow

Our macbook suddenly started running very slow and having programs freeze a lot after a partial migration form a power PC G5.  In short it happens in two different accounts.  Activity monitor shows the cpu is not doing much (idle > 70%) but the memory is very full even when only activity monitor has launched.
Is it right for activity monitor to be showing almost all of the 1 GB used (0.78GB) immediately after a restart with only activity monitor running (see image).  I don't know what most of these things are.  CPU usages was very low.  launch program takes a long time, switching between programs, pretty much anything between programs, saving, or launching.  Also programs (at least firefox and power point which I use alot) freeze frquently.  (What I have tried is listed below).  Yes I have ordered more memory but that doesn't address the issue that this was working fine before.  Once  much is launched the memory use is essentially 100%
The cause:  macbook had been working fine with several user accouts and normal operation.  We had used it since "mid 2007".  Our old G5 is dying (video card I believe).  So I did a partial migration using the firewire migrate in the OS.  I migrated my account and then separately migrated some of the applicaitons.  I also started using Outlook and set up all my email accounts in it.  What should the activity look like?

Tried:  repair disk - no problems  The HD was replaced 12/12/2008,  repaired disk permisions
reinstall snow_leapard from original disk 10.6.3 - same symptoms,  updated through software update to 10.6.8  - no change.
not much on login launch.  other account has less and also slow.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible;  Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided.  Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.  Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Lion Cache Cleaner, CockTail, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac

  • Color printing with new Pixma very slow

(this was also posted on the general Airport Extreme forum, but I realized later that it's more pertinent to this one)
I recently replaced a Canon Pixma iP4300 printer with an iP4700. It works fine when it's connected directly to my iMac, but when I connect it to my Airport Extreme (to share it with other computers in the house), the color printing is extremely slow. Regular document printing is fine, but a color graphic or photograph takes a very long time. This never happened with my iP4300.
I've tried all the suggestions in the Printer Troubleshooting file and all my drivers and software are the latest versions.
Any other things I should try?

    Hello Andy, Thank you!
    - The computer is a New MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM.
    - Many times, I try with new libraries, even I try Format to zeros, and when import new pictures, the problem appears again.
    - All the pictures are imported to the main HD.
    - Is a regular spinning type.
    - I had try every option, even change the computer for a new one.
    - Yes, the OS en every case was updated to latest version.
    - No problem by the questions, I apreciate your help.
    Best regards!
    Ps.
In some users chats, the people says that is a bug of the last version of Aperture, but not in all cases appears.

  • Macbook seems to run very hot with safari and very slow on other users

    Hi,
My macbook has been running hot with the fan on full boar recently. Through some deduction I've realised that is safari 4 making this happen? What would be causing this? Also since a similar time my wife's log in has been running really slow. She never installs anything and hasn't got admin rights?
Any help would be very appreciated.
    Thanks

    HI, Weaver@Swampfoot
this might be due to graphics - depending on the websites you are surfing to. try to check whether the temperature goes down if you close windows with graphics/video content; some news-sites cause my MB heating up with the for me unwanted advertisements, which i close as fast as they open.
on the other hand, it might be something else. open "Activity Monitor" (under Utilities), click "CPU", make sure that you have "all Processes" enabled (in the choser-window above the tabel). This gives you a list of all processes running, ordered according to their cpu use. please, note the ones which have highest cpu values, and report back.

  • Network with relay express very slow

    Hi all
I have two expresses in my house liked with the one being a relay forming one network. One connected to the one in the living room and one on the other side of the house. My g5 is wirelessly connected to the one on the other end.
When on my laptop in the living room network transfers to the G5 are extremely slow, 1h for 40mg, almost ridicules.
Does anyone know why it is so slow and how I can improve the performance.
    Thanks

Before purchasing any new equipment, I would start by performing a RF site survey of my existing wireless network environment to try to pinpoint the best locations for the base stations and to attempt to eliminate any forms of Wi-Fi interference.
Try using a freeware utility like iStumber to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). Use iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the SNR at different points around your house. Within the Inspector, note the values for "signal" & "noise" at these locations. Start with your MB near the base station, note the readings, and then, choose other locations where you would use your MB from, as well as, the location of your G5.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
    SNR Guideline
    o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the SNR is 20dB+ at each of these locations, then you should be getting reasonable performance from your wireless network. If less, either try to locate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating either the base station or the wireless clients until they are within a 20dB SNR range.

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 with Mavericks is very slow

    Hi everybody,
i have already seen this discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24018625#24018625) started by campitor and allegedly solved by arthur but only for campitor's concrete case and already closed. Therefore I have made the same checkup with Etrecheck (see below). It would be really great to solve this problem because I need my mac for work and I am getting really desperate: it's just too slow for effective working. I am really desperate and really thankful for any kind of hint or help that could bring back my machine to normal workable speed.
    cheers,
    Cris

  • I am having trouble with yahoo mail, very slow to send never used to be this way started before iOs5 update

I am having trouble with mail, yahoo has started to have a problem sending, slow or not at all started before latest update, help

I noticed this at one point and what I did, which worked, was to delete the mailbox from my iPad, then reinstall it.  Give it a try and see if it helps you as well.

  • My new MacBook Pro with Retina is very slow to start

I have just bought a new MacBook Pro with Retina and surprised/disappointed at how long it takes to show the log in screen. Is this normal? It is slower than my old MacBook.

    You are welcome
Many banks are Windows-centric and are concerned about blocking the Swiss cheese software holes. Apple people do not need that junk...and the overhead that comes along with it.

  • 1st back-up with ethernet still very slow

I've checked other threads related to the slow 1st back-up, but didn't find an acceptable answer.
I'm trying my initial back-up of about 80 GB from my MacBook. I started with the wireless connection- after 5 days, it had only backed up 16 GB!! And then it seemed to hang for another day with out any progress so I cancelled it (I couldn't leave my portable computer stationary any longer). I started again, this time using ethernet, as suggested in other postings, but it is still doggedly slow (less than 1 MBPS!). I am using a CAT5E cable, so shouldn't it be at least 100/sec?? I had assumed that if I went out an bought a CAT 6 cable, I'd bump it up to a GB, but since the CAT5E is slow I'm not sure if it's worth it.
So is this an issue with the manner in which Time Machine organizes data for backup, an issue related to the ethernet connection, or something entirely different?
    Any advice/suggestions are much appreciated!

It sounds as if you might have configured your Time Capsule to "join" your wireless network, correct?.
In this type of setup, the TIme Capsule simply becomes a wireless hard drive and the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are not enabled.
If you could consider connecting your Time Capsule to your main router using a permanent Ethernet cable connection, you would have the option to backup using wireless or Ethernet.
