Qosmio G20 - Unable to initialize 320GB drive - JBOD to 1RAID-0

Hello, fellow Toshiba users,
at first I apologize if this question has already been answered, but I failed to find existing answers to my problem.
A colleague of mine has a Toshiba Qosmio G20 with two 80 GB disk drives. Large 17 inch "surf-board-sized" laptops aren't my cup of tea, but the Qosmio served him pretty well.
We tried to upgrade both aging hard drives in his laptop. Having considerable experience in replacing the laptop drives I didn't expect any particular surprises, but I was wrong.
We tried to replace the original drives
bay 1: 80 GB Fujitsu drive, system
bay 2: 80 GB Fujitsu drive, data, RAID off
with the new ones
bay 1: 320 GB WD Scorpio drive
bay 2: 320 GB WD Scorpio drive.
The G20 BIOS is v1.30, the latest version. It recognizes the new drives' - but marking one of the new drives as 1RAID-0 fails. After trying to "initialize" the 320GB drive in bay 1 as 1RAID-0, on the third page of G20's BIOS, there is some disk activity, however the drive remains in JBOD mode.
Being unable to mark the 320 GB drive as 1RAID-0, I am unable to use the 320GB drive as a system drive.
If the original system drive is cloned to a new 320GB drive it fails to boot. Booting XP *starts* but subsequently fails with STOP 0x7B - in other words, the infamous INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE blue screen when Toshiba RAID driver is loaded during Windows bootup.
Installing windows from plain-vanilla CD, of course with slipstreamed Toshiba driver, remains impossible. The Windows setup only "sees" the drive in bay 2.
When the system drive is put in secondary bay and G20 is booted from it, Windows XP starts successfully. However, the drive in bay 1 is inaccesible from Windows, it remains offline in Toshiba's RAID console. So booting from drive in bay 2 isn't an option, too.
A similar problem where the owner failed to install a 200GB system drive is described here
Link: http://tinyurl.com/38wokw
That owner, however succeeded in installing a 100GB drive and we resorted to 80GB drive as a system drive, and upgrading only the drive in bay 2 to 320 GB.
I understand what happens when the drive is "initialized" in BIOS. Toshiba's BIOS only marks the drive as 1RAID-0 and it fails on 320GB drive. I'll refrain from stating my opinion on such practice.
My question is - if it is possible, how to *manually* mark the 320 GB drive as 1RAID-0?
Using a hex editor, dd or something similar is no problem. A partial answer would also be to know the largest drive size that *can* be successfully marked as 1RAID-0 in G20's BIOS.
Thanks in advance.

Hi
Im not 100% sure what could be wrong by I presume the 320GB HDD size could be too large!
How about the 100GB or 120GB HDDs?
I think you should test it because usually the most of the BIOS supports an HDD size limitation and therefore not all sizes are supported.
But note; using the 1RAID-0 (striping) configuration, the size seen by the OS is twice that if the smaller of the two HDD units in the RAID configuration. Using the RAID-0 all data on both disks will be lost, even if only one of the two disks drive fails.

  • Qosmio G20 - System recovery without CD Drive?

    Hello Everyone.
I have Qosmio G20 and the internal DVD Drive is not working.
I have recovery DVD also, since DVD Drive is not working I am not able to boot with recovery DVD and do the recovery.
I do have external DVD Drive also but Qosmio doesnt support USB external drive for booting.
Is there any way to recovery my system without replacing my internal DVD Drive.
    Regards
    Karthik

Maybe if you start your notebook in DOS and load DOS driver for external device. With full access to external device maybe you will be able to start recovery procedure.
To be honest I don't understand why you don't want to replace optical disc drive. Qosmio G20 is so old and parts are not expensive anymore. Check eBay and you will find a lot of drivers for Toshiba notebooks.
Replace the drive and be happy. It is not so big investment.

  • Unable to initialize Thumb drive using Disk Utility!

    Hi All,
I have a 4GB Sandisk thumb drive that works flawlessly till I tried to initialize it using Disk Utility in my MBP.
Now, whenever I try to connect the drive to USB port, system ask me to initialize the disk but when I try to initialize system goes into an unfinite loop of unmounting the disk.
And now when I try to format it using Windows, the message appears that "Unable to complete the format". The disk was working in both Windows and Mac prior to I used initialize function.
    Any help would begreatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Samberl,
As I already wrote in my initial post that the drive was working before I try to intialize using MBP. Anyways, I already followed your advice and replaced the drive with a new one. But now I am worried if I again use it in my Mac and initialize using disk utility. As of now I have formatted it using Windows and using NTFS-3G in my MAC to read or write the data.
    Anyways, thanks for helping

  • Re: Qosmio G20 blocked on JBOD in the BIOS

    Hi,
I have a problem with the Toshiba Qosmio G20-109 .
The system does not start, the two hard drives in JBOD (unable to start Windows).
    HDD1 - 120GB
    HDD2 - 250GB
So I wanted to put the first HDD 1 1RAID-0 using the method described in the manual : I entered the code 1 2 3 4 and I pressed Enter.
The problem is that once entered the BIOS code remained frozen and blocked.
I tried everything , I 'm not despairing by reaching install an OS.
I hope there is a solution.

    It's simple.
    1RAID-0: HDD 1
    JBOD: HDD 2
DVD Drive does not boot a modified Windows. I had an official version that starts but does not have the driver.
I created a CD with the driver using nLite but he did not recognize.
I found on the internet a CD Win XP SP3 Toshiba OEM.
Miraculously, he possessed the RAID drivers and recognized the hard drives that allowed me to install Windows.
I installed Windows on the HDD 1 and I just formatted the HDD 2.
Thereafter, I installed Windows 7 with the driver.
    Toshiba RAID: 1.11.17
    Toshiba RAID Virtual Device: 1.1.0.0
I updated the firmware of the DVD drive : D100> D101> D102 it allowed me to start the CD created with nLite.
All drivers are up to date for Windows 7.
Only the buttons to the TV does not work (touch keys) !!

  • Qosmio G20- 121E - unable to order Recovery disk

    Hi,
I had accidently deleted the Qosmio player partition in my hard disk and now i am unable to install windows on my disk.
When I try to install windows it shows a blue screen with some memory location address and etc
I think the disk partition table is corrupted and i dont have recovery cd with me.
When i try this link [https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx|https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx] it give me a message like this
*For your device no recovery medium can be ordered, because it comes either not from the region of Toshiba Europe, or it is too old for this service.*
Please help me to recover my laptop or please give me a valid link to download the recovery CD.
    Model No: Qosmio G20- 121E
    With regards ABHI.

Well, as far as I know G20 supports RAID and therefore you will have to install the RAID driver in order to be able to recognize the HDD...
The RAID driver can be downloaded from the Toshiba European driver page.
Download it, unzip the package and use the freetool called nLite to include the files into the Win XP OS.
The nLite will create a new XP disk together with the needed RAID drivers.
PS; if you need more details how to use nLite then google simple... there are a lot of websites regarding this theme!

  • Oracle ODBC  - Internal Error - unable to initialize NLS during driver load

I'm having some trouble with my ODBC connections which I hope someone can please help me with!
About 6 weeks ago all was working as normal.
As far as I know there have been no updates to the ORacle DB, the Windows XP operating system or the ODBC Drivers.
Today when I opened access and visual case 2 to connect to Oracle I was at first greeted with a:
    unable to connect SQLState=IM004 SQL_HANDLE_ENV
    error. ODBC also kept crashing.
I restarted the computer and was confronted with a different error:
odbc SQLSTate 08004 ORA 12154 TNS could not resolve the connect identifier specified
I was able to fix this error by setting the environment variable TNS_ADMIN in windows xp environment variables. I'm extremely confused about how this happened though as it was working and I don't think anything has changed.
I was then able to connect to the database via Microsoft Access but when I opened Visual Case 2 and tried to make an update, I was confronted with the following error:
Oracle ODBC Driver - internal error - unable to initialize NLS during driver load
I looked in the registry at:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Oracle\KEY_OraClient10g_home1
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Oracle\KEY_OraClient10g_home2
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Oracle\KEY_OraDb10g_home1
and NLS_LANG was set to "AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252" in all 3 places.
(Though KEY_OraClient10g_home2 only had 4 entries as opposed to KEY_OraClient10g_home1's 13 entries)...
Since I made those changes I can no longer connect through Access.
I just receive a ODBC - connection to 'xxx' failed
    Advice greatly appreciated!!!!
    Edited by: user11150264 on Aug 25, 2009 10:21 PM

    Actually it sort of does...
I switched the ODBC connection to use instant client and now it's all working again.
The biggest mystery is what changed to make it suddenly stop working the old way...

  • Downloading and Installing Tuner driver - Qosmio G20

Excuse my ignorance, but I have downloaded a zip folder from the Toshiba site containing files for installing a tv tuner driver(date last modified 11.24.05) for my Qosmio G20 - 139(PQG21E-01500NEN). The instructions say: '...check the contents of the zip file for installation details', but I cannot find/recognise a file that offers such instructions (there are a few I've clicked on that offer up a warning about opening files, so, being a novice in these things, I chose not to continue).
Can anyone advise me upon what file contains installation instructions, or how I should go about installing this driver?
Thanks in advance for any help given.

Hello Feliks. Thank you for your reply. To try and answer your questions:
    1) I am not really sure the TV Tuner must be installed. I, in my innocence, thought it might be an update.
    2) Under Device Manager entries (and thank you for telling me where to look!) there is a listing: TOSHIBA PCI DVB-T/Analogue Hybred Tuner.
I am presuming this is the entry that relates to the TV Tuner. I tried updating the driver from there (just out of interest) by entering the path to where the dowloaded driver resides, and the message I got was (paraphrasing) 'No newer version of the driver already installed found'
So, perhaps I've just been leading myself (and those who have tried to help) up the garden path.
Once again, thank you for your help.

    Hello
It is not easy to give you some precise information about units from Japan. I am not familiar with units produced in Asia and it will be interesting to know which components are built in.
The only thing that I can recommend you is to check Installations instructions http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tools/qosmio/g20/xp/install-qog20-xp-na.zip and install all stuff listed there and be careful about installations order.

  • Qosmio G20 : D-video pinout ?

Hi Qosmio users, I've been trying to output D1, D2, D3, D4 resolutions on a HD-ready LCD TV with no success. I can output standard PAL through the D-out plug at the back of the Qosmio, using the provided D-to-Scart cable, but when I output 480p, 720p, 1080i,... the LCD TV is out of sync.
I know the TV is able to receive 1080i signals, I have tested it with a HD camera video recorder (using component outputs).
So, I have checked the D-to-Scart cable and found that it only carries a composite video signal (plus the left and right audio signals).
Some people have suggested to buy a D-to-component cable in Japan, but I can't understand how it could work because it seems the D-out plug on the Qosmio is not the standard D4 connector as described on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D4_video_connector
(there's no audio signals on these D4 connectors).
So, I'm looking for the pinout of the Qosmio D-connector...
Also, I am wondering if the Japanese D1, D2, D3, D4 analog HD standards are supported by european HD-ready TVs ?
    Thanks for any answer,
    Fabrice

    Hey Fab,

    > sync
First of all, what cable did you use for this test?
The D-video to scart cable provided with euro Qosmios is absolutely unable to do this, so it's no big surprise it didn't work. the Component signal is just not transmitted via Scart input on european TVs.
    But that's not all..
    > So, I have checked the D-to-Scart cable and found that
    > it only carries a composite video signal (plus the
    > left and right audio signals)
Yeah that's right, unfortunately, read below...
    > Some people have suggested to buy a D-to-component
    > cable in Japan, but I can't understand how it could
    > work because it seems the D-out plug on the Qosmio is
    > not the standard D4 connector as described on
    > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D4_video_connector
    > (there's no audio signals on these D4 connectors).
You're absolutely right. It seems Toshiba Europe decided that we, european users, would have no use for the Component output so they made the D-Connector just a plug to output rotten composite through the "D-video to scart cable".
If you bought your Qosmio G20 in the US or in Japan, it would be able to output Component. (cables supplied with US&JP qosmios are the "D-connector to component" type.)
Even if the nVidia driver gives us the option for D1 -D4, the plug on our european units apparently just won't allow it.
Talk about misleading advertising, or worse, the marketing guys have strictly no idea what they're talking about.
I do have a Euro Qosmio, the E10, with D-connector plug and I have bought the "D-connector to Component" cable in Japan. I have no TV or HD screen to test it yet, but I strongly assume it will not work for the reason stated above.
It seems the D-connector plug output has been "adapted" for european needs (read: its original purpose has been totally destroyed).
What IS THE POINT of using this output plug for conveying a composite signal is beyond me. Especially since we already have S-VHS output which is fantastic compared to composite. No, i think Toshiba did this so that mr n00b-i-don't-care-about-quality makes it work easily on his TV by just having to plug the scart for both video + audio.
    Very, extremely sad.
Our only hope would be that the 4 signals (1 ground and 1 composite for video + audio left, audio right and ground for audio (prolly shared with ground for video)) leave some of the pins free for the component signal output.
I have yet to test on HDTV but i would be extremely surprised if it worked.
I would *love* anyone to prove me wrong on that one.
    Later,
    Alcahest

  • 5.1.4 update breaks HDV capture? Unable to Initialize Capture Device

    Problem:
Final Cut Pro cannot capture standard 1080i60 HDV footage from Sony FX1 camcorder. FCP reports "Unable to Initialize Capture Device" when the log and capture window is opened. However, the footage CAN be captured in iMovie (which is interesting, and unacceptable). When HDV>DV downconvert option on camcorder is activated, footage CAN be captured as anamorphic SD, so the camcorder and FW do work.
The problem is occuring on a rock-solid FCP system that I use on a regular basis (mainly for SD editing). It has been approx 2 weeks since I last attempted a HDV capture, the system has been working great with SD footage (still does).
Factors that have changed to my knowledge since HDV capture was last functioning properly:
*Added a new external FW drive into regular usage (a different brand than normally used, no issues with it so far).
*Updated FCP to 5.1.3, and then 5.1.4 when that fix came out. All SD captures and work have been fine so far.
Here's what's interesting...I had a copy of the FCP v5.0.4 .app that I had saved an archive of prior to the crossgrade update. Guess what? I can load it up, and it captures HDV without any problems! With that in mind, this looks like an FCP 5.1.4 issue. But I am at a loss on how to proceed further in troubleshooting. Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

    ---NOTES---
    What I have tried:
*Attempted capture with a different Sony FX1 camcorder.
*Swapped firewire cables and system firewire ports.
*Attempted capture with camera FW chained to an external HDD.
*Unplugged all other external firewire devices from the system.
*Trashed FCP prefs using FCP Rescue 5, created new project using Easy Setup (for HDV).
*Tried different variations of FCP A/V settings, tried all the HDV FW device control presets and the HDV AIC capture preset.
*Per instructions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852 I removed the numbered Quicktime pckg Receipts and re-installed the latest version (7.13). Post-install/reboot, I repaired Disk Prefs and Verified the disk using Disk Util.
*Have also attempted installing QT 7.13 2 and 3 times in a row, also trying disk prefs repair BEFORE the post-install reboot.
    Final Cut Pro Audio/Video Settings:
    Sequence Preset: HDV-1080i60

    *VCR HDV/DV: HDV

    Final Cut Pro 5.1.4, G5 DP 2.7 (PPC) Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I think I figured out this vexing problem. I too was having the same issue. Check to see that your Quicktime is newer than 7.1.2. If it isn't you'll have to upgrade it. I only upgraded to 7.1.6 here because I was afraid of going to a really new version. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime716formac.html. After I upgraded my quicktime, I ran software update and the Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 update appeared. I hoipe this helps.

  • Unable to initialize capture device and device control in HDV

I shot with a Sony HVR-Z1U/Z1N and am using a Sony HDV 1080i tape deck to digitize.
I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and installed FCP Pro 5 on it. After getting over some time code issues we were chugging along, when on the 4th tape the image on the log and capture screen suddenly dissapeared (I could get audio and could see the image on the tape deck). Well after taking the tape out, checking and rechecking it I popped it back in and ever since then, I have been getting this error mssg "Unable to initialize capture device and device control."
I have tried deleting the preferences and starting from scratch. If I do that, and choose the easy setup with HDV- 1080i60, it gives me this error "Unable to locate the following external devices- HDV (1440 X 1080) 30fps.
I upgraded to FCP 5.1.2 this morning and upgraded the OS to 10.4.7 and QT to 7.1.3 and still no change.
Im at my wits end, Ive been working on this for a whole week now.
    Thank you,
    Bugs

It has been reported to take more than one attempt to correct the installation but, if properly executed on a machine without other system problems, the QT reinstall process does work. The key element here is you must reinstall QT after you trash the receipts. The process is listed below.
    x
To do a full quicktime reinstall.
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
If this doesn't work, then the problem lies elsewhere:
    1. your system - user preferences, firewire ports or other system elements.
    2. your equipment - camera/deck/firewire cables.
    3. your process - not setting up the software properly or using the software erroneously.
Listed below is a troubleshooting process. Not all steps are appropriate but the general process of isolating the problem is useful.

  • Unable to initialize deck?

I have 3 tapes from an event to capture and edit with my Panasonic DVX100B. The first tape captured fine. A couple of days later I try to capture another tape and suddenly I get "unable to initialize deck"!
    I have...
    1) Tried to capture on my Macbook Pro - same message
    2) Tried to capture with a different camera - Canon Optura 40 - when I click capture it says "no video"
    3) Deleted QuickTime Receipts and reinstalled QuickTime
    4) Tried to capture with QuickTime and iMovie - no can do
    5) Tried to change settings in FCP but it says "[Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC
    any suggestions? Please help!

For whatever reason, your mac is not recognizing the deck/camera. Not sure what the issue is, since it obviously recognized the FW drive on at least one port, yet didn't recognize the 2nd camera.
My first thought would be bad FW cable(s)/port(s), but what you've explained doesn't sound like the problem.
FYI, updates are a tricky business...particularly QT. Final Cut tends to operate best with certain combinations of OS/FCP/QT. But that shouldn't explain your mac not even recognizing the camera(s).
Tell us exactly what versions of OS/FCP/QT you're currently working with.
Might also try connecting both cameras to see if they can see each other (ruling out bad FW ports on each). Might also go buy a new FW cable.
    Post back,
