Quark 6.5 Freezes after Security Update 2009-003

Hi There,
New to the forum.
This has happened me before - couple of years back, something to do with Stuffit Preference Pane, doesn't seem to be the same solution.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Two more suggestions:
(a) I know you ran AppleJack to no avail. If you have the original disk that came with your computer, consider running Repair Disk from it.
1. Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, select your language first then go to the Installer menu and select Disk Utility.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
7. Click Repair Disk Permissions
8. Reboot computer, go to Utilities folder, launch Disk Utility and click Repair Disk Permissions.
Afterwards, try launching QuarkXPress
(b) If the issue persists, with Quark off, drag the Quark preferences folder to the desktop and then try launching QuarkXPress.

  • Rosetta crashes after Security Update 2006-003

The other day I installed Security Update 2006-003, and now a number of PowerPC applications crash the machine.
It's a funny crash, the mouse keeps moving and the capslock key goes on and off, but that's it. Nothing on the screen animates or updates. Windows will not move, dock does not do anything. cannot force quit or command-tab. The only option is to do a hard reset or hard shutdown.
    I found this article:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060517111924138&query=rosetta+crash
    I hope it's fixed soon!
    Matt

    Hello!
I'm glad I found your post -- a brand new Intel Core Duo 20" iMac is doing the same for me after Security Update 2006-003.
What I've found on this end so far is that Norton AntiVirus 10 for Macintosh seems to aggravate the problem. I had a system that was running fine (complete with NAV10) before applying the 2006-003 update. At first I thought the problem might be due to user error--maybe NAV wasn't quite ready for Intel Macs, but Symantec says it is after you get version 10.1 from LiveUpdate. (I did.)
I finally had to erase the hard drive and reinstall the entire operating system from the provided restore discs. After I did that and got the latest software updates, I tried again with NAV. It still caused the same problem...a complete lockup.
The first time around, only NAV seemed to cause problems. Other PowerPC-native programs running in Rosetta seemed to be OK. This second time around any PowerPC-native app running in Rosetta (after the install of NAV10) would lock the machine up completely, except for the mouse pointer. (I have also noticed that the machine still responds to being pinged over the network, and that Apple Remote Desktop 3 says it is online. So the crash isn't stopping everything from working.)
So my conclusion is that there is something seriously wrong with Security Update 2006-003 and Rosetta, and it may be made worse by NAV10 for Macintosh. In any case, I'm going to steer clear of this update for now.

  • Multiple Errors - G5 Quad/Mac OSX 10.5.8 - After Security Update 2009-006

I'm using a PPC G5 Quad, and after I installed Security Update 2009-006, I began having problems even being able to open project files Final Cut Pro 6. So I had to force quit FCP6, but even that wouldn't close the application.
I figured the issue was probably just with the application, so I manually powered down the computer and only wound up getting two blank blue screens on my monitors when I powered back up.
Powered down again, disconnected power cord for 2 minutes, then powered back up.
Attempted to open FCP6, didn't work, wouldn't quit using "Force Quit."
Opened Motion 3 to create a new project outside of FCP6 - when I selected "Save Project As" the application became unresponsive. Would not quit even when I selected "Force Quit."
To test if there was an issue with other applications besides Final Cut Studio 2, I opened Pages and tried selecting "File->Open." This made the application unresponsive, and would not quit with "Force Quit."
    I repeated this test with:
    QuickTime Player
    Adobe Photoshop CS
    Preview
    Microsoft Word
    Safari
ALL of these applications became unresponsive when I tried using the command "File->Open"
I then decided to try installing Security Update 2009-005 to see if that would help.
Because Safari was locked, I downloaded Security Update 2009-005 using Firefox, then re-downloaded Security Update 2009-006.
After downloading both security updates, I manually powered down the computer, disconnected the power cord for 2 minutes, then re-powered on the computer.
I immediately installed Security Update 2009-005 and restarted the computer.
Once it restarted, I opened up Pages and was successfully able to use the command "File->Open" to open both templates and previously created files.
I then opened FCP6 with no issues, and successfully opened and re-saved an existing project file.
I then re-installed Security Update 2009-006, and re-started the computer according to its prompts.
At first, it appeared that the issues were resolved. I opened Pages and was able to use the command "File->Open" to open an existing template.
I then quit Pages and attempted to open a new Finder window. Immediately I got a spinning rainbow ball and got the message on my screen "System Failure" etc etc, and the last line read something about "Panic" or "System Panic - we're holding here..." or something to that effect. Quite strange.
I'm now in the process of attempting to repair disk permissions using Disk Utility. The permissions that seem to be out of order are with:
private/var/log/secure.log (what and where is this???)
    System/Library/CoreServices/Airport Base Station Agent.app/Contents/CodeResources"
    various Airport Utilities
    Various FrontRow
    Various backrow
Several places I don't recognize such as usr/bin and usr/sbin
And internet plugins related to FlashPlayer

  • Windows clients not able to FTP after security update 2009-0006

My FTP server hasn't changes in over a year. Recently, a client complained that they were seeing strange things when they logged into the FTP server.
What they used to see was a series of folders that stated 'Permission denied' and one single folder that had their name on it that they had permission to access. How I accomplished this was to set up an FTP folder and through ACL give them read/write permissions, but deny full control to all other clients. This way they can't see anything but their own FTP folders.
After the security update, what my clients now see is a list of files with names like this:
    drwxr-xr-x 4 administrator staff 136 Dec 15 15:35 [client name]
    Total 80
    Warning: [client name]: Permission Denied
    Warning: [client name]: Permission Denied
    Warning: [client name]: Permission Denied
I think this issue started after I installed the security update 2009-006, but I can't be sure. What's strange is that I can login using a clients username and password using Transmit on my Mac, but when I try gain access using Windows XP and connecting through network places, I can't get in.
I did read in another posting about reverting to a backup of the ftpaccess file in /Library/FTPServer/Configuration folder. I compared my backup to the live server and they are the same...
Any help would be awesome, as I'm not exactly a trained IT guru...

  • After Security Update 2009-002 no connection to server

After running Security update 2009-002 I can not connect to a server, e.g. a webdisk with Apple+K command. Rebooting does not help, nor entering fresh login data.
    Does anybody have a clue?
    thanks in advance,
    Flip

Hello Flip, and a warm welcome to the forums!
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Window Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
Also remove it from the CMD+k window by highlighting it and clicking the little minus button.
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1544
    Reboot, test again.

  • Ical server disclaims after security update 2009-006 (Server)

    hi
after i update the leopardserver 10.5.8 to the actual security update 2009-006 (Server), the ical server was not available anymore. the ical client say something like "host disclaims access".
i tried to restinstall 10.5.8 combo update and disc repair. but that doesnt work, and to disactivate firewall for a try.

  • Mac Mini (intel) freezes after Security Update

On May 16th I downloaded and installed ´Security Update 2006-003 (Intel)´ on my Mac Mini. Since then I have been unable to have any other session with it than in "safe boot" mode.
Then, on May 18th, during one of these "safe" sessions, I also downloaded and tried to install ´Mac Mini SMC Firmware Update´, hoping that this could be the resolve. The initial behaviour changed slightly, but that was all.
When I now look for upgrades, I get the message that the latter is available for download, so it has obviously not been activated.
I have been keeping the ´box´on for days in case there was some process going on in the background that would resolve it, but in vain.
As something appears to have entered the machine with these updates, are there any way to reverse them and throw them out?

Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thanks for your reply!
To adress your questions in sequence:
1 - After powering up, the grey Apple screen emerges, and shortly after the rotating wheel of bars starts going. Then the screen changes to blue, and the shield showing "Starting Mac OS X" has its blue ribbon rotating up towards 100%. Now, here things may change from time to time, sometimes it reaches 100%, sometimes not. But the next phase is the same; a shift to a dull blue-gray screen with nothing on it, which remains until I eventually give in and presses the power off button for some seconds. I even left it like this this for a day, to make sure nothing was going on behind, but in vain.
2 - I am not sure about your meaning "Since the computer operates normally in Safe mode....", I did not normally operate it in safe mode, it became a necessity after the download I mentioned. Tried to look in the suggested FAQ, but did not find anything I found relevant. (But then -being new to Macs - maybe I did just not understand it?)
3 - The Security update was the last of 7 updates that was downloaded from the Apple Support pages, the others being: QuickTime v7.1, Front Row Update v1.1.2, iDVD Update v.6.0.2, iWeb Update v1.1, iPhoto Update v6.0.3 and iMovie HD Update 6.0.2. As I said, I am new to the Apple structure, so I do not know if these softwares are regarded as third-party or not.
There is, however, as far as I can see, nothing that indicates that any type of panic with the core is declared during start-up, it just becomes incommunicado!
4 - Obviously, the most attractive option I can see is to follow your advices here. But the mentioning of specific versions of CD in conjunction with re-installatin alerts me somewhat. What I got with my Mac Mini are two CDs; ´Mac OS X Install Disc 1´ (Labelled Mac mini) and ´Mac OS X Install Disc 2´. Does this means that I am unable to do Archiving?
Finally, I have some other topics (Basically with QuickTime) with this Mac Mini as well, that was the reason I started looking for updates in the first place, that will become important again when I overcome this blow. But as I am looking around in the forums I become increasingly aware that there are lots of people experiencing similar problems to myself (Poor functioning of Airport, problems using flat-screens as monitor), and now this one. I mean to see a pattern, and that is that there are significant differences in functionallity between OS X for the "normal" processor and the one for Intel. How deep goes this difference? There is obviously softwares for OS X that cannot run on this machine, and how do I keep them out?
Hoping for some more helpful hints
    Best Regards,
    Ole

  • Trackpad no longer drags after Security Update 2015-003

I am running Yosemite 10.10.2 on my MacPro 2010. After I installed Security Update 2015-003, I noticed my Apple Trackpad can no longer drag. Here are the symptoms:
I CAN move the cursor around the screen using the trackpad.
I CAN click, and appropriate responses occur.
If I click on a menu in the menu bar, then move (hovering) the cursor with the trackpad down the list of menu choices, they DO NOT highlight. I can click on one, and it WILL BE performed, but a submenu would NOT pop out. I CANNOT drag down the menu and to the side to bring out a submenu using the trackpad.
I CANNOT move a window or other object by tap-dragging on trackpad (double tap, holding the second tap to turn it into a drag)
I CANNOT select a phrase or paragraph by highlighting it by tap-dragging on trackpad
Hover behaviors on web pages DO NOT occur (so links that should highlight, menus on a web page that would normally drop down on their own, do not do so) if cursor is moved by trackpad.
Tool tips or other hover behaviors in web pages or outside of web browser DO NOT occur if cursor is moved by trackpad.
All behaviors are NORMAL if I use my Wacom tablet stylus to perform the same cursor move.
So, if I move the cursor over something using the trackpad, nothing happens. If I then move the cursor over the same thing using the Wacom stylus, highlighting or other hover behavior occurs.
Yes, I've changed the batteries in my trackpad, and it works fine otherwise. It does NOT skip or exhibit symptoms of a poor connection. Three-finger and four-finger drags to go to Previous Page in Safari, or switch desktops, DO work.
    Only single-finger dragging is gone.
This issue occurs on my 2010 MacPro running 10.10.2, but does not occur on my 2009 MacPro running 10.10.2 at work.
Both have the Security Update 2015-003 installed, as well as all other current AppStore updates.
So Security Update 2015-003 would not seem to be the issue, but that was the thing which changed on my OS immediately prior to the beginning of the undesired behavior.
There is no setting in the Trackpad control panel that has to do with single-finger dragging. I've also checked the Mouse control panel and the double-click speed is the same between the two computers (the one where Trackpad drag works, the other where Trackpad does not work).

    SOLVED:
This issue went away by itself after a reboot for a software installation.

  • PPC-iMac: Black screen on restart after Security Update 2006-003

Did the Security Update 2006-003 this morning. On restart the screen is showing the grey Apple-logo for several seconds. Then it goes black, with the prompt in the upper left corner: "localhost/root:" Vent running in high gear. Entering unix-commands is possible, but no graphic interface coming up. How to fix this? Don't want to reinstall the whole system.
    iMac G5 20" PowerPC iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm having basically the same problem with my PowerBook 1Ghz Aluminum 17". After running the latest security update and latest iLife patches using SU, my system boots to the local Darwin consol login. I can see my HD and all it's files, but I can't get the machine to boot back into GUI mode. Safe mode doesn't work.
This was a newly refreshed system running 10.4.6 and ONLY iLife installed - nothing funky and no 3rd-party apps other than those pre-installed in 10.4.x.
I've booted with the 10.4 DVD, repaired permissions (again) and repaired the drive (reported not needed). Zapping the PRAM doesn't help.
Perhaps I have a lemon because I have had problems with this machine in the past, but only when installing major system updates between 10.3-10.4 with non-apple RAM. I don't think this is the culprit this time as the machine has been functioning fine since the last fresh 10.4 install (with some OWC RAM).
Any ideas? Anyone have tips for what can be done in the console to repair the system?

  • Problem after Security Update 2010-003

    Hello,
Since i installed the Security Update 2010-003 i have a problem at the login-screen an password-prompt like this http://twitpic.com/1j66kr
Have you any idea to fix it?
    Thanks a lot!

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
These symbols are from Apple's Last Resort font, and indicate that a major problem has arisen with the OS's ability to use the basic system fonts. It's been reported here a few times, and I think the only solution is to reinstall all system fonts. See Kurt Lang's post.
Here is a user tip by Kurt Lang that lists all necessary system fonts and their locations.

  • Won't sleep after "Security Update 2009-004"

    Hi,
After installing the latest security update via software update on my unibody MacBook Pro, I can't get it to stay in sleep mode. When I close the lid it goes to sleep as usual, but awakens immediately, then sleeps again and the cycle continues. Making sleep mode effectively useless, and I also noticed that it becomes very hot as it goes through the cycle of sleeping and waking. Has anyone else experienced this? If so is there a fix, or will it be a matter of waiting for another update from Apple to fix it?

And just to mention, I've already tried resetting its PRAM, but it makes no difference.
    Thanks.

  • Mac CRASHES on restart after Security Update 2006-003 and QuickTime

[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; Please start a new topic about your technical issue. ]
i've just done TODAY's software update... and now when i boot up in to OS X, it is fine for about 10 seconds, until my Window Partition mounts, and the whole system freezes... does anyone else have this problem...
[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; retitled ]

Similar problem here. I installed the latest security update via software update. It rebooted twice and then the Aqua "starting Mac OS X" splash screen appears, the progress bar jumps to 100% very quickly and then the system goes into what looks like sleep mode (the power buttons dim like when it's asleep). It won't wake up after that or restart by holding the power button. Have to unplug it!
At first, I tried a couple times using the OPT key to try and boot from another disk and it ignored it and went to sleep as above. Then, I tried using the SHIFT key to try and boot into safe mode and the screen stayed black and it didn't seem to be doing anything. After that, I tried OPT again and it booted successfully. Now it seems to be booting normally again. Try booting with SHIFT key held down and then reboot normally to see if that works.
This is very, very bad. I am afraid.

  • Skype crashes after security update 2015-003 march...

It crashes immediately after being launched. It happens since I updeted in march 20th and persists after updating to version 10.10.3 on avril 9nt.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi,
When any application crashes in your Mac, this can be addressed pretty much the same way, for example this Apple article may be of interest:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18751?locale=en_US
No doubt your system is compatible, I'm using the same system version as you. Can you try to update Skype again, maybe you want to replace the app downloading it from the Skype site: Download Skype
Also you can try to update Skype manually from the Skype Menu Skype > Check for updates.

  • Security Update 2009-004 Mac OS 10.4 Intel & Keychain permission (Mail etc)

After upgrade above, constantly got KeyChain permission request and no matter how many times you granted it, it kept asking, someone else found the cure this is a synopsis of the answer: (Answer extracted from http://unsanity.org/archives/2007_01.php ; found by BDAqua , thanks for everything!)
For those who are put off by the above website here is what was done to 'Fix KeyChain constantly asking for permission to update as your software has been upgraded" (this occurred after Security Update 2009-004 for 10.4 Intel, could not get mail without that blasted box constantly showing up)
In order to fix this problem if you are having it, just open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and type:
    *sudo mv /var/db/CodeEquivalenceDatabase /var/db/CodeEquivalenceDatabase.old*
Hit return, it will ask you if you are serious, if so enter password, well, swallow hard and do it; then re-boot; on re-signing in it asks you for 'Keychain permission to update (in my case Airport) as it has been upgraded, 'curse the stars' and hit yes, *everything will work!* Going to Safari, in my case, it asked for permission, and I gave it and it works fine, same thing for each account in Mail; once okayed it works fine and doesn't keep asking for Keychain permission for more than once!
