Quartz eating up memory?

My application occasionally crashes so I was trying to figure out why. At first I missed some obvious memory leaks and cleaned up my code to properly alloc/release. But now I see where everytime I reload a view (for simplicity I just removeFromSuperview and add another view) the memory used goes up by between .05 and .1 MB. I tracked down the following as the culprit in the ObjectAlloc portion of Instruments but I have no idea how to correct it. If this is all handled by Quartz how do I free any of that memory?

Hi geo141,
Do you only experience the memory issue with Nokia MixRadio? How about with other downloaded apps? Does it happen whether your Nokia MixRadio account is logged into the app or not? Do you get this issue when the phone has an active internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) while using Nokia MixRadio?
Make sure that the phone's software is updated. You can verify it by going to Settings > Phone Updates > Check for updates. You may also check this link for more tips on increasing the phone's memory: Nokia Lumia 620 - Check and increase available memory on your phone.
Hope to hear feedback from you soon.

  • I want to upgrade my software, but it says I need more start up memory. I keep my stuff on an external hard drive so I don't know what is eating my memory. How can I check this?

How can I figure out what is eating my memory so I can upgrade my software?

Do you mean disk storage space or physical RAM? The latter is memory, not the former. If you mean the former:
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
If you mean RAM, then you have to add more to the computer which is not possible on Air models.

  • Something is eating the memory!

I used to have 30g of memory, and today I only have 500mb!
I got my first message: 'Your start up disk is almost full' yesterday.
Over the past few months something has slowly been eating it. I upgraded to Panther a good 6 months ago and also downloaded Office:Mac. I have a couple of third party games on the system, such as GameHouse. Could any of these have given me a bug that eats the memory?
    Please help!
    Cheers,
    Maria

Hello Adam ( or Maria )
Running a disk with so little space is asking for trouble. A minimum of 10 - 15% is generally considered the safe level of free space.
I would strongly suggest that you ditch some file you know can be easily replaced. ( Music for example ) Repair permissions from disk utilities, re-start, then download this Application to tell you what has eaten all the space...

Post back if you need more.

  • Does repeated use of the same addSubView eat up memory?

Inside viewDidLoad I'm created an array of button objects. When I click on another button in my app, I'm looping through the array, placing the buttons in frames and adding them to the view with the following code:
    [self.view addSubview:[buttonsArray objectAtIndex: i]];
    [self.view bringSubviewToFront:[buttonsArray objectAtIndex: i]];
When testing on an iPhone, after a while an out of memory error occurs. I am wondering if it is perhaps because of the way I am doing this.
Would repeated occurrences of addSubview and bringSubViewToFriend gradually eat up memory? Or do these overwrite existing items I've previously added to the subview?
Would it be best if I do this just one time inside viewDidLoad and hide the buttons until needed?
Or after clicking on a button, is there something better I should do to release the memory used until needed again?
Does this sound like a likely cause of a memory problem?
    Thanks,
    doug

I'll check out the subviews property.
In the meantime, programmatically, how would I add the buttons to a single UIView as a container? That sounds very useful.
I did notice that for UIToolbar I could hide and unhide the entire UIToolbar at once with a single property setting of hidden to YES or NO. But I set up the UIToolbar in the Interface Builder.
It would be great to figure out how to add the buttons to a UIView. In fact, what I'd like to do is add them to a scrolling view container at some point.
I just haven't been able to figure out the syntax yet.
    Thanks,
    doug

This file is definitely bugging me I have tried everything but every time this file starts eating up memory and slowing down the computer isthere a solution for this we have the i5 coming out nowbut this has been constantly nagging and isee somany issues with so many people is apple doing anything about it???

Thank you for your assistance. It was a corrupted preference file and your post resolved my problem. I have had a number of problems with preference file under lion.

  • AdobeCrashDaemon eats all memory

    Hi,
I believe it started happening after I installed CS5.5:
After running for some time, AdobeCrashDaemon eatch all available memory and basically makes the computer non-operational.
Quitting AdobeCrashDaemon from Activity Monitor solves the issue... that is until AdobeCrashDaemon eats all memory again.
It occupies some 4.8 GB of Real Memory (Mac Pro 2x2.66 GHz, 7GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.5.8).
I usually have InDesign, Photoshop and Dreamweaver open + open other versions of InDesign sometimes).
I hope this issue can be solved ASAP because it's impossible to work like this.
    Thanks,
    Leo

This is worth a try (I've never had or heard of such a problem) because sometimes preference files become corrupt.
If you go to this path:
    Users > [yourname] > Library > Preferences
You'll see there is a preference file for the Adobe Crash Daemon named "com.adobe.crashreporter.plist"
Try moving that to the Desktop, then restart your computer. It will probably be recreated when needed which might fix the problem.

  • Can't restore iphone 4s after ios7 update, pc keeps eating hd memory, but not restoring?!

I have an iphone 4s and just updated to ios7. However after the update, when I tried to restore my old settings from the backup (which is on my pc), the iphone started eating hd memory until I was left with 28kilobytes of free space. Naturally, I got the low disk space error and the process stopped. Now I can't restore my settings on the updated iphone and I have no memory left on C:\
    Please help!

Iphone 5 locked into an Apple screen this morning.
Followed like 5 different suggestions from this forum, regarding connecting to Itunes and restoring.
All attempts on Windows and MAC, Itunes is up to date.
Itunes extracts the software, contacts apple for verification, an then " Notification of error 40".
I have tried this like 15 times now, and nothing is working.
Any real help, beside following an article that I probably already attempted would be appreciated.
    thank you
    Greg

  • I have a Kernal Task that is eating my memory it a root user

I upgraded to mavericks and found my mac book pro really sluggish from boot up whenever i try to complete any tasks from using photoshop to safari it takes too long and i get the spinning wheel
I spent a whole afternoon with an apple genius who carried out all the diagnostics he had everything passed the only thing he found was a kernel task it says user is the root
his solution was to re format the disc and re install everything by dragging it back from my time machine back up and checking if the kernel task re appeared in the activity monitor this seemed really time consuming and i am not carrying all my software instillation discs and i had jut done this a month back (though after the re format i used the migration software from my time machine back up to re install everything on my computer i did do it singularly)
please see this is my system

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • ITunes eating up memory and disabling network in win7

    Hello everyone.
Im a new user of the iPod Touch 1G (gf gift). Thing is, i just installed iTunes, and when syncing my iPod, iTunes seems to simply eat up all memory available (2gB RAM) until all computer gets to a standstill. I cant even restart.
    Any ideas?
    Thank in advance....

I have the same issue, and happens everyday and I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate.

  • Firefox eating excessive memory (highest I've observed it was 3.5 GB)

Upon start up my FireFox goes right up to over 130KB of ram, which is already a lot. Over a period of 45 mins to an hour, its consuming an entire 1GB of memory. Left unchecked it goes over TWO GB. One time I even saw it eating 3.5 GB and had my entire system running at a snails pace. That is beyond excessive. I've seen other posts about memory usage but none on this huge of a scale. If I can't fix it I won't use FireFox anymore.

hello, i agree that this totally unacceptable memory consumption. there have been many efforts going on of reducing the core browser's memory footprint - most of these excessive leaks are caused by extensions in the browser - which ones do you have installed in firefox > addons > extensions? (changes will be implemented in firefox 15 to dramatically reduce the possibility of memory leaks by these 3rd party programs).
you can also try launching firefox in safemode and see if it's working normally. if so, you'd have to try disabling all extensions, reenabling them one by one again & then observing the behaviour of the browser again to find out what's causing it.

  • Flash player eats up memory until it crashes, can't watch full SWF

Can anybody please help me out with this. I have a 180mb SWF which is a lecture from one of my online classes, when i try to watch it i can watch about 20 minutes and then it will run out of memory. I watched in my task manager as Flash player went from only using 20mb to upwards of 500mb to 1000mb and it kept going up, it's like the more i watch it just keeps going up and up. Tried it on 3 different computers and still get the same problem, is there some reason this would be happening?  Why does flash player eat up so much memory?  I have Adobe Flash CS4 installed so it's playing through the player not a web browser or anything.
(tried it in web browser and it does the same thing)
Please help i have a test coming up!
    Thank you!

    Hi,
Based on my understanding it seems that there is a problem with the coding from your Flash Animation. I am not quite sure how that animation was created. Is there an embedded video in it? Did you create it? I just wanted to get more details about the file.
    Thanks,

  • Help...My motherboard is eating my memory!

I built the below computer a few years ago.  A year or so after building it, it  began to crash.  While working, I would get a blue screen full of type flashed at me followed by the computer restarting.  The screen would flash so fast that I never could read what the error message was.
This crashing and rebooting continued.  I decided that the error could be due to my power system being faulty.  So I purchased the Antec power supply listed below.  That didn’t help and the crashes continued.
One day, while looking at system properties, I noticed that it only listed 512 megs of system memory instead of the 768 megs that I had installed (three 256 slots).
By trial and error, I figured out which of the three memory cards had gone bad.  I then bought a new 256 and installed it.  Everything was fine for a week or two but soon the crashing started to happen again and the memory in that same slot went bad (the new one).
I decided that this must be due to a bad motherboard.  I contacted MSI and asked them to RMA it.  They agreed and sent me a new motherboard (same model).
I took this opportunity to upgrade my ram and replaced the “broken” 256 with a new 512.
I installed the two 256 and one 512 memory cards and booted the system up.
My computer has run great for the past year (or so).  Now am getting the same crashes.  Again the bluescreen with writing on it appears too fast to read, followed by an automatic reboot.  According to “System Properties” I still have 1 Gig of memory (so far).
Unfortunately, I don’t have the specs on my memory.   I do know that it was what was recommended.  Is there something wrong with this motherboard?  Have others had similar problems?
    Please help!

Would I do that in the Bios? How much to increase?
Yepp, in bios. Normal voltage is 2.5V so I would suggest to increase it up to 2.6V in the first step. 2.7V should be possible without danger for your ram too.

    Won't boot.
Maybe faulty disk? Try another one.

  • Event handler eats up memory. Bad programing and/or bug.

    Hello
I've been programming a GUI for a project. The basics of the program is a sample routine that updates a array once a second. Once the array is updated I use a event handler to plot the new array in a graph.
When I wrote this gui I think I've stumbled upon a bug in Labviews memory allocation.
If you have two loops. One that builds a array and then signals a loop with a eventhandler that reads the array and the event handler is stoped for a few seconds (by opening a sub vi or something inside the event handler), the memory goes berserk. When the event handler is free after the stop the memory is still allocated and does not return.
I could not find any information on this problem in the forum so I thought I would share this information with everyone. I managed to reproduce this phenomena in a small example (attached), if anyone is interested in it. The problem is simple to fix once you recognize the problem. However it was not the simplest problem to find (imho that is ).

Where are you seeing the memory being allocated? What tool are you using, task manager or LabVIEW profiling? I'm not seeing what you describe (LV 7.1.1 on a 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 w/ 1 Gb memory)

    Hi,
On a windows 2012 remote desktop session host I see the svchost.exe (termsvcs) using approx 13 GB of 16 GB available memory .... (Free memory on the host is zero now :-( ).
    these are the memory figures:
    In use: 16176 MB
    Standby: 150 MB
    Free: 0-40 MB
what is causing termsvcs process to take so much memory ?

    Hi,
Are there many RDP sessions on the server?
You can use command Query Session to query RDP sessions.

  • My mac is eating up memory.

Hi, I recently filled my scratch disks, thinking it was due to all the photos I have on my MAC, i began moving them all to a backup external hard drive and then removing them from my MAC. I managed to move about 60GB of photos off my machine and contined using my MAC as usual. The next day after adding nothing or even using my mac my memory has somehow filled itself back up and i now have only 1GB left on my hard drive with nothing to show from it. I thought it may be a virus and have ran Sophos anti virus software but found none.
any thoughts of what i can do to stop my mac from being so memory hungry?

    Just for clarrification:

    Storage= hard drive
