Queries on ODS

Is there a query on the technical content statistics cube that I can run to figure out how often or not an ODS is being queried? OR Is there any other way of findng this information?

It depends what do you mean by "how often ODS is queried".
Generally look at queries based on InfoCube 0BWTC_C02.
You can use key figures "Number of navigations" or "Frequency".
Have a look for example at query 0BWTC_C10_Q013 "OLAP Use per InfoCube"

  • Queries against ODS vs. Cube

I'm looking for best practices relating to when you should or should not develop queries against ODS.    I am familiar with the standard considerations like level of granularity and so forth but would like to be able to analyze each situation more thoroughly.   Does anyone know if there is a document that discusses this topic?
    Thanks, Carol

    Hi,
There is no right and wrong answer for this question. There are more pros and cons.
The major Cons con in the performance area (in my opinion). ODS objects should not be used for slice and dice analytics but for more list type reports (more operational in nature) Please check the BW performance materials on the BW home page for more information. • Creating Queries from Cubes and ODS

    Dear Gurus:
I'd like to learn how to make queries from ODS and CUBES.  can any Guru out there prescribe a particular infocube / ods project for me to make report on in both 3.5 and BI 7?  I can send daily reports on my progress.  I think this is the only way I will learn..  I may even have to seek help to create a simple architecture from Source DataSourc to Target Data Source to transfer Rules to InforSource to ODS to Cube and then fuill it with practice data just so that I can design a query / queries...  Can any kind BW Guru offer me his/her assistance please...  I may run out of a job if I dont learn soon...
<b>By the way... I would like to make it known that I am starting out totally from scratch.... As in ZERO BW 3.5 and/or BI 7.0 experience nor application background in either. 2. I have checked in our system that some of queries access the data from ODS instead of infocube. Is there any benefit to run the queries in ODS instead of infocube? In our company, BW application team execute one query to access the data from ODS. I don't know the reason for it.
    3. With 'RSRT', we can execute performance information for infocube. is there any tcode or tool to check the performance of queries that access the data from ODS?
    Thanks
    Amar

    Hi Amarjit,
The choice of ODS or cube for reporting depends upon your requirements. It depends upon several factors like the details in which you want to see the reports, the amount of data you will be looking at etc. Since ODS is a flat structure (transparent table), you can not store large amounts of data. If you want to see some reports which contains data for several years (huge), you are better off running a report on a cube. Otherwise, reporting on ODS is ok. It all depends on your requirement.

  • Is there any setting in ODS to accelerate the data loads to ODS?

Someone mentions that there is somewhere in ODS setting that make the data load to this ODS much faster.  Don't know if there is kind of settings there.
    Any idea?

565725 - Optimizing the performance of ODS objects in BW 3.0B
    Solution
To obtain a good load performance for ODS objects, we recommend that you note the following:
    1. Activating data in the ODS object
In the Implementation Guide in the BW Customizing, you can implement different settings under Business Information Warehouse -> General BW settings -> Settings for the ODS object that will improve performance when you activate data in the ODS object.
    2. Creating SIDs
The creation of SIDs is time-consuming and may be avoided in the following cases:
    a) You should not set the indicator for BEx Reporting if you are only using the ODS object as a data store.Otherwise, SIDs are created for all new characteristic values by setting this indicator.
    b) If you are using line items (for example, document number, time stamp and so on) as characteristics in the ODS object, you should mark these as 'Attribute only' in the characteristics maintenance.
SIDs are created at the same time if parallel activation is activated (see above). They are then created using the same number of parallel processes as those set for the activation. However:if you specify a server group or a special server in the Customizing, these specifications only apply to activation and not the creation of SIDs.The creation of SIDs runs on the application server on which the batch job is also running.
    3. DB partitioning on the table for active data (technical name:
The process of deleting data from the ODS object may be accelerated by partitioning on the database level.Select the characteristic after which you want deletion to occur as a partitioning criterion. For more details on partitioning database tables, see the database documentation (DBMS CD).Partitioning is supported with the following databases:Oracle, DB2/390, Informix.
    4. Indexing
Selection criteria should be used for queries on ODS objects. The existing primary index is used if the key fields are specified. As a result, the characteristic that is accessed more frequently should be left justified. If the key fields are only partially specified in the selection criteria (recognizable in the SQL trace), the query runtime may be optimized by creating additional indexes. You can create these secondary indexes in the ODS object maintenance.
    5. Loading unique data records
If you only load unique data records (that is, data records with a one-time key combination) into the ODS object, the load performance will improve if you set the 'Unique data record' indicator in the ODS object maintenance.

                                               PSR

    Hi PSR
    To optimize performance of ODS
    1.      Creating SIDs
The creation of SIDs takes a long time and can be avoided in the following cases by:
¡        Not setting the indicator for BEx Reporting if you are using the ODS object only as a data store. If you do set this indicator, SIDs are created for all new characteristic values.
¡        If you use line items (for example, document number or time stamp) as characteristics in the ODS object, in the characteristic maintenance, indicate these as Attribute Only.
SIDs are created in parallel if parallel activation is switched on (see last point). They are then created with the same number of parallel processes as created for the activation.
However, if you specify a server group or a special server in customizing, these specifications are not only valid for the activation, but also for the SID creation. The creation of SIDs runs on the application server on which the batch job also runs.
           2.      DB partitioning in active data tables (technical A table)
By partitioning by database level, you can delete data from the ODS object much more quickly. As a partitioning criterion, choose the characteristic by which you want to delete.  For more information on partitioning database tables, see the database documentation (DBMS-CD). Partitioning is supported by the following databases: Oracle, DB2/390, Informix.
           3.      Indexing
Use selection criteria for queries for ODS objects. If the key fields are specified, the existing primary index is used. The more frequently accessed characteristic should appear on the left-hand side.
If you did not specify the key fields completely in the selection criteria (visible in the SQL trace), you improve the run time of the query by creating additional indexes. You can create these secondary indexes in the ODS object maintenance.
           4.      Activation of data in an ODS object
To improve system performance when activating data in the ODS object, you can make the following entries in Customizing under SAP Customizing Implementation Guide ® SAP NetWeaver ® Business Information Warehouse ® General BW Settings ®  ODS Object Settings:
¡        the maximum number of parallel processes when activating data in the ODS object as when moving SIDs
¡        the minimum number of data records for each data package when activating data in the ODS object, meaning you define the size of the data packages that are activated
¡        the maximum wait time in seconds when activating data in the ODS object. This is the time when the main process (batch process) waits for the dialog process that is split before it classifies it as having failed.
¡        the server group that needs to be used when activating the data in ODS objects in parallel You have to create the server groups beforehand using the following path: Tools ® Administration ® Network ® RFC Destination, RFC ® RFC Groups. If you do not specify anything here, then the activation runs on the server on which the batch process was started for activation. If a server from the server group is not active, then the activation is cancelled.
           5.      Loading unique data records
If you only load unique data records (meaning data records with nonrecurring key combinations) into the ODS object, then the loading performance is improved when you set the indicator Unique Data Records in the ODS object maintenance. See Creating ODS Objects.
The records are then updated more quickly because the system no longer needs to check whether the record already exists. You do have to be sure that there duplicate records are definitely not being loaded, because this will lead to termination.
2.Navigational Atrributes behaves like characteristics in reports. with the help of this we can drill down in the reports. while this is not possible with the display attributes
    Hope I had answer u r question
    Thanks & Regards

  • Determine variable value based on characteristic row value

    Hi all,
Am basically looking for a bit of advice from those wiser than myself.
I have a requirement to build an Activity per Driver report which is essentially a list of cost centres down the page, with Productive Hours (an SKF) in one column, the driver (another SKF) in the next column, and then a calculation.
Sounds easy, however the SKF for the driver differs depending on the cost centre. . . .
For example, cost centre 100 might be driven by ACTIV1 whereas cost centre 200 might be driven by ACTIV2 and then cost centre 300 might also be driven by ACTIV1.
    I have come up with 2 possible solutions ;
    1) Set the SKF as an attribute of the cost centre and then use this as the restriction in the report.  Easiest, most standard way of setting it up, however the problem here is that some cost centres use a number of SKFs (represented by a hierarchy node) as their activity driver.  I can't set a hierarchy node as an attribute, so I don't know how this could work for those cost centre with more than one SFK accumulating as their driver.
    2) Maintain a Cost Centre to SKF Driver mapping table in R/3 which is loaded into an ODS in BW.  Create the report using an exit variable for the driver, which queries the ODS to retrieve the appropriate SKF value(s) for each cost centre.  Could this work - not sure how I know which cost centre to retrieve the driver for in the exit coding ?
Any suggestions would be welcomed.  Surely this can't be a unique problem.
    Many thanks,
    Blair

I should have explained better before. I have one invoice template and we want to keep it one template for all companies. Each invoice is run individually, each companies footer is different, I am calling multiple headers and footers based on each company. Since the headers and footers are different I need to be able to add different amounts of lines and the end of each invoice depending on that company. I have accounted for the page break in my logic based on the amount lines the page is long. I just need a dynamic variable that I can assign different values on the fly.
    Thanks

  • Querying Cubes on Update Rules?

I have an update rule that currently queries an ODS to get the value of a key figure and then apply that key figure to the cube the update rule is intended for.
Basically, this is the select statement I use in the routine:
    select defect_quantity from table_a
      where notification = notification
        and notif_item = notif_item.
Since the ODS is a flat table, this works fine.  However, I am having trouble figuring out how to write this same query against a cube.
Is there a way to query a cube with ABAP in an update rule?  Any info or link to how to do this would be appreciated.

    Dear Karthik,

Use Transaction UPSC02         -      ALE Distribution Unit: Packet Types.
    Performance Optimization for <b>ODS</b> Objects:
To ensure a good ODS object loading performance, take the following into account:
           1.      Creating SIDs
The creation of SIDs takes a long time and can be avoided in the following cases by:
Not setting the indicator for BEx Reporting if you are using the ODS object only as a data store. If you do set this indicator, SIDs are created for all new characteristic values.

However, if you specify a server group or a special server in customizing, these specifications are not only valid for the activation, but also for the SID creation. The creation of SIDs runs on the application server on which the batch job also runs.
           2.      DB partitioning in active data tables (technical A table)

  • Keys in DSO

    Hi guys
I am writning technical specification where I have to specify the order of keys in a new DSO.
1.On what basis do I choose order of keys in DSO?how will this order help me?
2.While creating DSO in BW,where do we have setting to choose this order of keys in DSO?
    Thanks.

    Hi:
1.On what basis do I choose order of keys in DSO?how will this order help me?
Extracted from SAP Note 384023 - "Optimizing performance of ODS objects"
    5. Indexing
You should use selection criteria for queries on ODS objects. If the key fields are specified, the system uses the existing primary index. The characteristic to which the system accesses frequently should be left-aligned.
However, if the key fields are only incompletely specified in the selection criteria (recognizable in the SQL trace), you can optimize the runtime of the query by creating additional indexes. You must maintain these secondary indexes manually in Transaction SE11.
2.While creating DSO in BW,where do we have setting to choose this order of keys in DSO?
The order of the Keys in DSO is set on of the Key Fields section (from the top to the bottom).
