Query about tag extensions and custom tags

Hello,
Can u please clarify me where are these tag extensions and custom tags are actually used. (in which conditions)
What are the advantages in using them...
thanks in advance..
Jaagy.

You have to remember that .tag are, in a way, jsp pages, so you can use other custom tags, etc.
We use them when we need template that are mostly html, with a little bit of logic in them that we want to reuse.
For example, we made one for or header and footer. In header.tag, we set all of our http info, from doctype to body, including default css, title, etc if they are not supplied as parameter, and in our footer we put the /body and /html tags. Now, our typical pages look like
<%@ taglib tagdir="/WEB-INF/tags" prefix="custom" %>
<custom:header title="Page title" />
... page content
<custom:footer />Now, if we want to change some attribute for the whole page, or to put a signature in each page, we just have to change the corresponding .tag file and the whole site is update.
Also, .tag file can be used to display selectively page fragment.
Take a look at Sun's tutorial for more info:

Hope this helps!

  • Query about User Variables and Advanced Actions

    Hello,
    I am creating a clinical-based project using Captivate 5.I have to give you quite a bit of information before I can pose my questions so please bear with me.
    Users have to select multiple options from a checkbox widget (shown below).
    Each options, for example 'location' is associated with a variable for example 'hpi0' (See below):
    Each option has addtional data associated with it:
    Location = hpi0 (user variable)
    Location data = hpi0data (user variable)
    Please see the screenshot below:
    Notice in the image above that I have created a conditional advanced action - if the user selects Location (hpi0) on the checkbox widget, the data associated with that variable will be presented to them. That data (e.g. location data or hpi0data) is presented in a caption text box in the following slide. (see below)
    I hope I have given you enough information.This is a complex project and this is just one of my many problems.I have had to create over 200 hundred user variables and more than 6 Conditional Advanced Actions in one project. The project is becoming unstable. So here are my queries:
    1) Are there limits to the amount of user varables I can create in a project?
    2) If so, how can I re-use the user variables I have already created? Otherwise I will have to divide this project into 3 parts and I want to avoid doing that.
    3) Are there limits to the amount of Advanced actions I can create in a project?
    Again  I am using Captivate 5 for this project.
    Any assistance, tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. I am learning captivate as I go so If there is away to streamline this process, I am open to any suggestions.
    Thanks
    Tinukwa

    Hello Tinukwa
    This is indeed a challenging project, and although I did create a lot of projects with advanced actions, they were never that size. You have to listen to Jim's words about using some widgets, he is a widget specialist which I'm not. I do not know if you are aware of the fact that the checkboxes widget coming with Cp was extended by Jim? He offers it on his website, I blogged about this extension and suppose you do know my blog. About the advanced actions, perhaps I could help but only screenshots are bit limited. So I wonder if either I could have access to the file and/or if we could have a Connect session eventually?
    First intuition tells me
    we should look to re-use variables, but I do need more information; do you need the vars XXXXdata somewhere else later? If not, perhaps only to display it you could use one variable; now you keep the information chosen by the user in 2 variables: hpi0 and hpi0data (isn't that redundancy?)
    and by choosing labels for variables, actions and objects in an intelligent way reduce the editing time because you'll need a lot of almost identical advanced actions. Usually I do a lot of reflection before starting to create labels, variables and actions.
    About re-using what you already constructed: as I explained once, a template is the only way to be able to re-use a script at the moment. And Kevin Siegel discovered (so gratefully for that) it is possible just to change the extension of a standard CP file to cptl to have a template.
    Lilybiri
    PS Jim suggest also to split up the project? Here I'm not sure if that is really needed.. should have been the case for previous versions.

  • Displaying file extension and "raw" tag in iPhoto 08

    In iPhoto 06, filenames were displayed with their extensions and a "raw" tag was added.
    In 08, the "title" field doesn't contain the file extension. Is this a result of the way I imported photos into 08? I used "import" to bring them in from folders on a network drive.
    Glenn

    I right clicked the RAW file, then chose "edit in separate window". I did crop, contrast, sharpen, etc. Then the "Done" button.
    For example, I imported both RAW and JPEG from my CF card to iPhoto. They are IMG_3067.CR2 and IMG_3067.JPG, respectively. I then duplicated the first file and renamed the new one as IMG_7777.CR2. I did the edit like mentioned above on IMG_7777.CR2. Finally I clicked "Done". You can see that IMG_7777.CR2 differs from IMG_3067.CR2 but it still has the CR2 file extension.
    Is this normal or I missed something here?

  • Question: TLD and custom Tag Usage.

    Hi, I am new to the custom tags and I am confused with one of the examples.
              The TLD has
              <tag>
              <name>item</name>
              <tagclass>com.taglib.wdjsp.mut.OutlineItemTag</tagclass>
              <bodycontent>JSP</bodycontent>
              <info>
              Delineates an item, possibly including subitems,
              within a nested outline.
              </info>
              <attribute>
              <name>text</name>
              <required>true</required>
              <rtexprvalue>true</rtexprvalue>
              </attribute>
              </tag>
              This TLD specifies that the tag has body content that is JSP and not empty.
              The author uses the tag in the JSP page in the following way..
              <mut:item text="What is JSP"/>
              <mut:item text="Evolution of dynamic content technologies">
              <mut:item text="Common Gateway Interface"/>
              </mut:item>
              I wonder why the usage "<mut:item text="What is JSP"/>" - where the
              bodycontent is empty - does not violate the TLD.
              Is the bodycontent optional even if it is specified in TLD. What if it is
              tagdependent?
              thanks - Sri

    then in your code
    public void setEnabled(String enabled) {
    this.enabled = true;
    in your endtag reset the boolean to false;
    IMO, a cleaner approach would be
    private boolean enabled = false;
    public void setEnabled(boolean enabled) {
         this.enabled = enabled;
    }The advanatge is that
    <foo other_attributes enabled= "false"/> and
    <foo other_attributes/> will both evaluate to false;
    <foo other_attributes enabled= "true"/> will evaluate to true
    <foo other_attributes enabled= "will_this_work"/> will give an exception
    as the container cannot resolve it to a boolean value so that users will
    be forced to use true or false (or skip the attribute) which is how it
    should be.
    Also note the container cannot convert runtime expressions to boolean
    values. So if there's a String variable,say prompt in scope that has the
    value true, then<%
    String prompt = "true";
    pageContext.setAttribute("prompt", prompt);
    %>
    <foo other_attributes enabled= "<%=prompt>"/>
    will throw an error. (to do this you would have to specify rtexpr value of
    this attribute to true)
    For the above to work, your tag should be coded as shown below
    private boolean enabled = false;
    //note rtexpr value will always be Strings
    //container does not provide auto conversions
    public void setEnabled(String enabled) {
         this.enabled = new Boolean(enabled).booleanValue();
    }cheers,
    ram.

  • Scripting variables and custom tags

    Hello,
    I wonder how I could use a scripting variable in a custom tag? I have written a tag that formats number and dates, and would like to be able to do somethin like
    <% double x = 12,345; %>
    <x:write name="x" format="xyz" />
    Also I wonder how best to implement tags with parameters? I don't suppose it's possible to nest tags or scriplets in a way like <x:bla name="test" value="<%= 12345 %>" />? It seems tedious having to create an Object just to pass a Parameter.
    Many thanks in advance for any help!
    Bjoern

    I think I found the solution,
    pageContext.setAttribute(...,...)

    I don't know if there is a solution to the problem you are having with JSP 1.1. If you look in the spec, it actually warns you that dynamic includes can not be done inside a body tag. The spec actually states that the included code shout write directly to the response and not to the BodyContent.
    I was excited to find out they had fixed this in JSP 1.2, but they seem to have foiled me again. If my tag calls PageContext.include(), the spec says that include must call the flush method, which causes BodyContent to throw an exception since flush is not a valid call.

  • Tomcat 4.1.12 and custom tags with body

    Hi,
    I had deployed one application in tomcat 3.3.1 which used custom tags with body, and it worked fine, However recently I upgraded that application to tomcat-4.1.12
    and the tags with body stopped giving expected behaviour, however the tags without body are giving expected behaviour, I had a look at generated jsp file...
    I am pasting the generated output here

    Hi,
    I am able to resolve it,
    Actually I was using the body content as tagdependent instead of jsp.
    However the body content tagdependent works in Tomcat 3.3.1 and weblogic 5.1, 6.0.
    Anyway...

  • Is possible to write a custom tag inside another custom tag ??

    Hi
    Im trying to reduce the time needed to code mi app presentation layer, it uses some custom tags with certain configuration, i would like to know if its possible to do something like this inside my custom tag doAfterBody().
    public int doAfterBody() throws JspException {
              JspWriter writer=bodyContent.getEnclosingWriter();
              try {
                   writer.print("<customTag:myAnotherTag someEspecificConfigurationParams="someEspecificValues"/>");
              } catch (IOException e) {
                   pageContext.getServletContext().log("Error: "+e.getMessage());
              }return SKIP_BODY;
         }The goal is to simplify the jsp code because the configuration params for the custom tags (css styles and similar) are allways the same.
    That dont work, it simply prints <customTag:myAnotherTag/> in screen but the tag is not evaluated, ive tried too something like
    public int doAfterBody() throws JspException {
              if (repeat) {
                   JspWriter writer = bodyContent.getEnclosingWriter();
                   try {
                        writer.print("<customTag:myAnotherTag/>");
                   } catch (IOException e) {
                        pageContext.getServletContext().log("Error: " + e.getMessage());
                   repeat = false;
                   return EVAL_BODY_AGAIN;
              return SKIP_BODY;
         }And it doesnt worked worked. Maybe using the taghandler classes and calls to the doAfterBody could make it work, but when you need to nest tags it could be a little hell of coupling calls, so before doing it i would like to know if what i want is possible. After reading some books i tought it could work because the stack of out objects, but i cant make it work.
    Another idea is to inherit from tagHandler and override some properties in the tags, but i dont like the idea to much.
    So, can anyone help me??
    Thanks.

    You cannot do that and I have listed out the reason and a possible solution in this post http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=697243 from yesterday.

  • How to assign file extension and custom icon to executable?

    Hi all,
    I was reading an old thread about this issue:
    http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&thread.id=116925
    I need to try to do this.  My application uses a custom file extension (i.e. .abc).  Upon installation I would like to:
    1.  Assign My App and custom icon to the file class (extension .abc).
    This could be done by manipluting the registry (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb776856(VS.85).aspx)?  This could be a problem with Vista s unless registry operations occur during installation any changes are placed in a VirtualStore, correct?
    2.  Enable the double-clicking of .abc file type to pass the data in the file to my VI (exe).
    According to the File Handling Guidelines of Jean-Pierre Drolet (http://www.openg.org/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=File+Handling+Guidelines) the best way to do this may be using LabVIEW as an ActiveX server.
    I know that when I build an executable (or installer?) there is the option to enable LabVIEW to act as an ActiveX server.  This much I know I need to do.
    I thought I would open this discussion again as others may be interested and there doesn't appear to be a completely clear solution available.  Please do contribute where you can.
    Cheers,
    Battler.

    My application consists of Event Structure.
    How to register for ommand line event so that when a user double-clicks on a .abc file I can handle the opening of it?
    This needs to work (the files need to open) not only when the application is closed but also when it's already open.
    Anyone have ideas?
    The solution to that is to implement a DDE server in your application (and add DDE entries to the registry on installation). There are still DDE functions in LabVIEW vi.lib\Platform\dde.llb but they are considered depreciated and have been removed from the palette, also because Microsoft is trying to tell everyone that DDE is depreciated and sort of unsupported too. But it is still the mechanisme to pass actions from the shell to running applications.
    I hesitate to send you over to lavag.org where there have been some discussions about this years ago. If you go there you would do good to employ a friendly attitude. That board is run all by enthusiasts and idealists and they are all great folks but react not very friendly to people with an attitude.

    Hello,

    Not in tag classes. Possible if you implement custom tags using [url http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2004/05/12/jsp2part4.html]tag files

  • How to output a jbo tag from a Custom tag

    Someone else asked a similar question recently but I didn't see the answer.
    I have a custom tag and would like to output a jbo:UrlEvent tag. But the UrlEvent tag is not evaluated - it is treated as straight text.
    Is their a reasonable solution to this problem?
    Thanks,

  • Tag insight and closing tags problem

    I am a touch-typist, and as such, CF-Builder has a very irritating problem. Let me explain:
    One of the nice things about CFEclipse is that it senses when you have entered a closing element (i.e., #, }, ], ", etc.) When this occurs, it automatically moves the cursor forward WITHOUT leaving a duplicate. The fact that builder does NOT do this is very frustrating. It requires you to remove hands from the keyboard to hit the right-arrow, or you have to turn off the closing tags in the preferences.
    Other than that, seems like a pretty decent editor.

    I couldn't agree more. It's the little things that matter...

  • Question about setting cookies and custom authentication

    I have a question about setting cookies.
    I have two different 'projects' in HTMLDB - we will call them App1 and App2.
    I also have two different connection configurations setup in the DADs.conf file. - we will call them Connect1 and Connect2.
    App1 is setup to use database authentication (no user is specified in the DAD) and uses Connect1. Once the user successfully logs in, we set a username cookie (this is a persistent connection).
    We created a custom authenticatoin scheme for App2 - this scheme checks for the username cookie (set by App1). We would like for App2 to use Connect2 (HTMLDB_PUBLIC_USER is the default user specified and it uses connection pooling).
    Is it possible to set a cookie from App1, Connect1 for App2, Connect2 - then redirect to App2 and pick up that cookie?
    Here is an example of what we are trying to accomplish:
    A user loggs into App1, we set a cookie, and the user is redirected to App2. If the cookie exists, we allow them access to the home page in App2, if no cookie, we redirect back to a 'Login Failed' page in App1. We don't want App2 to use the same database connection as App1 though, we need App2 to use connection pooling.
    Is this possible? OR...Is there a better way to accomplish what we want to do?
    This is an enhancement to an existing app. Our requirements are to use Database Authentication (setup where pass expires after 60 days or so, cannot reuse last 3 passwords, etc.) - which is already setup and being used by other applications in our organization. All of our users have accounts in the database. We don't want users to have a new username/pass - and we don't want to manage a separate group for HTMLDB apps.
    The existing application uses HTMLDB's built in authentication - which uses database username/pass, and it uses connection pooling, but we cannot handle the pass expire stuff in it, unless there's something we're not seeing or understanding - at least that's how our DBA explained it to us.
    Any help with this will be appreciated so much. I can send you the code we have if needed.
    Thanks!

    Same problem here.  I have so many problems with this remote app.  Is there an iTunes API? I would like to write my own remote app that actually works.

  • Looking for good example about Woodstock components and custom validators

    Hi guys,
    could someone be so kind to give (or suggest) me a simple, minimal and working example with a Woodstock TextField (or Calendar) component and a custom validator?
    I cannot find good examples, all the ones I find on the net are too much wide and confusing so that I'm not able to adapt them to my needs.
    I already made a custom validator (formerly, "DateValidator") with the "validate()" method, and added it to some dynamically created components with code like this:
    calendar1.setImmediate(true);
    calendar1.setAutoValidate(true);
    MethodExpression methodExpression = facesContext.getApplication().getExpressionFactory().createMethodExpression(elcontext, "#{DateValidator.validate}", null, new Class[] { FacesContext.class, UIComponent.class, Object.class });
    calendar1.setValidatorExpression(methodExpression);
    Now, when I change data in the textbox or in the calendar, I see that something obscure is moving (this because I can read "Reading from localhost..." in the status bar of the browser), but nothing happens, and the validator method is never called (I tried this with the debugger).
    I think that only a good example could save me from the dark... Thanks in advance!

    Yes, I'd thought about just having the user set their
    timezone (similar to the forum Settings). However,
    even this forum settings causes some confusion.
    There's two options for a number of timezones. What
    differentiates them? The daylight saving rules are
    important to know and the list of timezones doesn't
    indicate this in any way. This list doesn't show all
    available timezones either (as previously mentionted,
    there's seven timezones for GMT -0700).Then you would have to do a better job than Sun did, wouldn't you? After all if you are going to be interpreting the answer you get, you had better ask a clear question. If you want to know the list of timezones actually supported by Java, then examine the source code for the TimeZone class. You can also search Google for "time zones" for links that will keep you busy for weeks learning the arcana of time zones around the world.
