Querying IN a passed string

I'm trying to send emails to parents of school children.
On the "create message" form page, the user can select one or
more grades that an email should go to (input checkboxes), and
those are passed as a string ("K ,1 ,2 "). On the action page, I'm
trying to query a table of subscriptions (record is Email, School,
Grade) for the passed grades. There can be more than one grade for
a given email if a parent has two kids, for example.
I'm passing the string just fine. I'm saving the string to a
messages table so we can store which grades in that school got
which email. But when I try to use it in a WHERE statement, it dies
on me.
SELECT DISTINCT Email FROM
Subscriptions WHERE GradeID IN ('#Str_GradeID#') gets me
nothing.
WHERE GradeID IN (#Str_GradeID#) gets
me "invalid column name 'K'" (kindergarten).
WHERE GradeID IN '#Str_GradeID#' gets
me "incorrect syntax near 'K ,1 ,2 '"
Is there even a way to do this? Should I be passing the
grades in a different manner?

Actually, it does have spaces, but I'd be happy if they
weren't there. My field type is char with a value of 2 (I'm new to
building dbs in SQL, so I'm sure there's a better way to do that).
Will try your suggestion now. :)
EDIT: Okay, I've changed them to varchar, and taken out the
spaces that were in there. I put in your code, and it's putting in
the quotes. The IN thingy still isn't working, though.

    The correct way to handle this is to use bind variables.
    And use DBMS_XMLGEN instead of DBMS_XMLQUERY :

  • How to execute an SQL query present in a string inside an ABAP program?

    hello,
    How to execute an SQL query present in a string inside an ABAP program

    Raut,
    You can execute Native SQl statements.
    Ex: To use a Native SQL statement, you must precede it with the EXEC SQL statement, and follow it with the ENDEXEC statement as follows:
    EXEC SQL [PERFORMING <form>].
      <Native SQL statement>
    ENDEXEC.
    There is no period after Native SQL statements. Furthermore, using inverted commas (") or an asterisk (*) at the beginning of a line in a native SQL statement does not introduce a comment as it would in normal ABAP syntax. You need to know whether table and field names are case-sensitive in your chosen database.
    In Native SQL statements, the data is transported between the database table and the ABAP program using host variables. These are declared in the ABAP program, and preceded in the Native SQL statement by a colon (:). You can use elementary structures as host variables. Exceptionally, structures in an INTO clause are treated as though all of their fields were listed individually.
    If the selection in a Native SQL SELECT statement is a table, you can pass it to ABAP line by line using the PERFORMING addition. The program calls a subroutine <form> for each line read. You can process the data further within the subroutine.
    As in Open SQL, after the ENDEXEC statement, SY-DBCNT contains the number of lines processed. In nearly all cases, SY-SUBRC contains the value 0 after the ENDEXEC statement. Cursor operations form an exception: After FETCH, SY-SUBRC is 4 if no more records could be read. This also applies when you read a result set using EXEC SQL PERFORMING.
    EXEC SQL PERFORMING loop_output.
      SELECT connid, cityfrom, cityto
      INTO   :wa
      FROM   spfli
      WHERE  carrid = :c1
    ENDEXEC.

  • Passing String Which Has Single Quote Row/Value to a Function Returns Double Quoate

    Hi, I'm getting weird thing in resultset. When I pass String which has single quote value in it to a split function , it returns rows with double quote.
    For example  following string:
    'N gage, Wash 'n Curl,Murray's, Don't-B-Bald
    Returns:
    ''N gage, Wash ''n Curl,Murray''s, Don''t-B-Bald
    Here is the split function:
    CREATE Function [dbo].[fnSplit] (
    @List varchar(8000),
    @Delimiter char(1)
    Returns @Temp1 Table (
    ItemId int Identity(1, 1) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY ,
    Item varchar(8000) NULL
    As
    Begin
    Declare @item varchar(4000),
    @iPos int
    Set @Delimiter = ISNULL(@Delimiter, ';' )
    Set @List = RTrim(LTrim(@List))
    -- check for final delimiter
    If Right( @List, 1 ) <> @Delimiter -- append final delimiter
    Select @List = @List + @Delimiter -- get position of first element
    Select @iPos = Charindex( @Delimiter, @List, 1 )
    While @iPos > 0
    Begin
    -- get item
    Select @item = LTrim( RTrim( Substring( @List, 1, @iPos -1 ) ) )
    If @@ERROR <> 0 Break -- remove item form list
    Select @List = Substring( @List, @iPos + 1, Len(@List) - @iPos + 1 )
    If @@ERROR <> 0 Break -- insert item
    Insert @Temp1 Values( @item ) If @@ERROR <> 0 Break
    -- get position pf next item
    Select @iPos = Charindex( @Delimiter, @List, 1 )
    If @@ERROR <> 0 Break
    End
    Return
    End
    FYI: I'm getting @List value from a table and passing it as a string to split function.
    Any help would be appreciated!

  • Problem with prepared statement where cluase when passing string value.Help

    I am updating a table using the following code. I am using string parameter in where clause. if I use Long parameter in where clause with ps.setLong , this code is working. Is there any special way to pass string value? Am I doing anything wrong?

    doesn't Pos look like a number rather than a string variable?
    if I use Long
    parameter in where clause with ps.setLong , this code
    is working.
    updateMPSQL.append("where POS = ? ");
    ps.setString(3,MPB.getPos());

  • Failure using {CALL } syntax & passing string params w/ # (hash)

    We are experiencing a problem calling functions using the {CALL } syntax and passing string parameters that contain # (hash) symbols. Apparently, something interprets the # inside the string literal and fails the call.
    We use this syntax with procedure calls from a Java applet to an Oracle 8i database using the 8.1.6.2.0 ODBC Oracle driver. The applet is running under the Java 1.3.1 plug-in and we are using a third party JDBC, type III, driver from JDataConnect to link the applet to the Oracle ODBC driver.
    Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

    What's the result of con.getAutoCommit()?
    You might try con.setAutoCommit(true) to see if that sorts it.

    Check the Wrapper classes (Double, Integer) in the api.
    parseInt() parseDouble() both take a string and return a primitive.
    String s = null;
    if(s == null) should do the trick!

    how can I do a REST-query with a filter for a string-column which is only a sub-string? I only found EQ, for example $filter=(name EQ 'tom') which compares the whole string.
    But I would like to query records, where a string-column CONTAINS a specific sub-string.

    Hi Tom,
    Do you use it on azure Data Market place? Did you try to add "*" on your query string, like this
    post.
    Also, you could try this tool from this
    thread. Also, for this issue, I suggest you could post it on
    SQL forum for better support.
    If I misunderstood, please let me know.

  • Example of passing String Array from java to C using JNI

    hi all
    i searched net for passing string array from java to C but i dont get anything relevent
    i have
    class stu
    int rollno
    string name
    String [] sub
    i want to pass all as String array from java to C and access it C side

    1. Code it as though it were being passed to another method written in java.
    2. Redefine the method implementation to say "native".
    3. Run jnih to generate a C ".h" file. You will see that the string array
    is passed into C as a jobject, which can be cast to a JNI array.
    4. Write the C code to implement the method and meet the interface
    in the generated .h file.

  • Attempting to construct LDAP query with getobject fails when passing string

    Hello.
    I have a very simple question. I am trying to pass a constructed LDAP string to getobject and it fails, but works otherwise.
    ldapStr = chr(34) & "LDAP://" & "CN=Security Group" & ",OU=Security Groups,OU=SomeOU,DC=subdomain,DC=domain,DC=com" & chr(34)
    Set objGroup1 = GetObject("LDAP://CN=Security Group,OU=Security Groups,OU=SomeOU,DC=subdomain,DC=domain,DC=com")
    Set objGroup2 = GetObject(ldapstr)
    objGroup1.GetInfoobjGroup2.GetInfo
    "objGroup1.GetInfo" works, while objGroup2.GetInfo fails with "(null): Invalid Syntax". I have tried escaping using a backslash (\) before the commas and forward slashes but same thing. I was hoping someone might be able to
    explain why getObject is not allowing me to pass this string when connecting via LDAP.
    Thanks for your help.

    Or this:
    strGroup="Security Group"
    ldapStr= "LDAP://CN=" & strGroup & ",OU=Security Groups,OU=SomeOU,DC=subdomain,DC=domain,DC=com"
    Just cat the strings.  Don't add extra quotes.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Pass String[] (String Array) type to a parameter in "Edit Action Binding"

    Hi
    Hope you are doing fine. This is very important to me, kindly help me in this regad.
    I have a scenario where I need to pass in a parameter of type String[] that has only one value {"Name"} to a webservice that returns some values.
    I've created a WS datacontrol, dragged and dropped the return value on to a jspx, then it asks me to give the input value
    How do I pass it to the Parameter in "Edit Action Binding"?
    When I say new String[]{"Name"}, it gives me the following error
    Cannot create an object of type:[Ljava.lang.String; from type:java.lang.String with value:new String[]{"Name"}
    Similarly, I hardcoded this value in a managedBean, added it to requestScope/applicationScope and queried it using #{applicationScope.AppCreationBean.epsName}
    But this time, it says, the value is null. I guess the value is not getting initialized properly. But if i hardcode the value in the getter method, I'm again getting the error as above.
    Would some one tell me how to pass an array of type String (ie, String[]) with a value "Name" in the "Edit Action Binding" wizard itself?
    Regards
    RaviKiran

    Hi Frank
    Thanks for the reply.
    Issue resolved by initializing it in the ManagedBean.
    For some reason, when I put it in request/application scopes, it was coming as null, but when I registered the Bean in PageFlowScope, it was working!
