Question about DVI Cables

I was wondering how I could connect the following DVI ports. There are many cables out there and would like to know which one can correctly connect them.
This is the DVI port on my tv:

And this is the one on the MPB:

Thanks

Not sure how to connect TV's to MBP's but you should take note that a lot of DVI cables dont use the vertical part of the "+" sockets that are apparent on MBP's. I would assume all you would need for this job is a male-male DVI cable. Don't take my word on that, but i think that would make the most sense... Maybe your manual that came with the TV would have information about this.

  • Question about FTDI cables

Hello guys. I have some trouble with the FTDI cables. I created a small circuit on a breadboard. I'm sure about the connections I created are good but I see something strange.
On the RTS I put a led between it and the ground. The led lights on while I connect the first time the Usb to the pc and in general the RTS is set as unasserted, while it should light on when it is asserted.
I also put a switch between CTS and the ground. In the way it is set on the breadboard it should set CTS at 1 without be pressed, in the labview debug I see that it do the opposite.
Considering that I'm sure about my circuit since I have used a tester to see if the connections and the logic was good...the question is how it is possible?is there something that am I missing?
Attached there is the circuit I created.

I am sure you went through this informaiton as well.
    If not double check connections.
How does RTS/CTS flow control work in an FTDI chip?
FTxxx RTS# pin is an output. It should be connected to the CTS# input pin of the device at the other end of the UART link.
If RTS# is logic 0 it is indicating the FTxxx device can accept more data on the RXD pin.
If RTS# is logic 1 it is indicating the FTxxx device cannot accept more data.
RTS# changes state when the chip buffer reaches its last 32 bytes of space to allow time for the external device to stop sending data to the FTxxx device.
FTxxx CTS# pin is an input. It should be connected to the RTS# outout pin of the device at the other end of the UART link.
If CTS# is logic 0 it is indicating the external device can accept more data, and the FTxxx will transmit on the TXD pin.
If CTS# is logic 1 it is indicating the external device cannot accept motre data. the FTxxx will stop transmitting within 0~3 characters, depending on what is in the buffer.
This potential 3 character overrun does occasionally present problems. Customers shoud be made aware the FTxxx is a USB device and not a "normal" RS232 device as seen on a PC. As such the device operates on a packet basis as opposed to a byte basis.
Word to the wise. Not only do RS232 level shifting devices (e.g. MAX232) level shift, but they also invert the signal.

  • Tech question about installation, cabling, speed, ...

The gentleman who owns the company I work for has a home office with regular ADSL. He only gets about 2Mb from this line and would like it faster if possible.
I went on the BT checker page and it said Infinity was available and he could get 30Mb download speed. Please can someone tell me what end to end this check is conducted over? Does the test go all the way to the master socket in the house or does it just test between the 'exchange' and the BT box at the end of the street?
The reason I ask is that he has 50-100m of old overhead cable going in to his property (big drive/garden) and this is the main reason he has always cited for the slow bandwidth issue on ADSL as neighbours who live closer to the BT box fair much better for ADSL speeds and a neighbour who recently had a new long overhead cable installed also did much better.
I am concerned that if I order this product for him the speeds will be far lower than those promised because of the poor quality cables between his house and the BT box.
    Please can someone advise?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Thanks for your responses guys.
Infinitechris: the lady in the BT call centre I spoke to told me that it was the specific line in question that had been tested, although when I pressed her on the details of this (i.e. was it tested to the BT box or to the master socket in the house) she first said one, then later said the other. When I kept asking about this, she just kept telling me I didn't get it as it was fibre optic broadband. When I said the last 100m was an overhead cable and most definitely not fibre optic, she insisted that the line had been tested and the speeds she told me were the speeds I would get.
PLC: His actual usage will be quite low - just a few GB per month but what he wants is for things to happen quickly when he is online.
If you are just talking emails /web browsing, then he is hardly going to notice a speed improvement.
If you are talking Downloading large files/ streaming/ youtube, Iplayer etc then yes you will notice the difference

  • Tecra A2: Question about DVI and external monitor

    Hello,
I'm trying to get a DVI Signal from the Tecra A2 using the advanced Port Replicator III but without luck. Does the A2 support DVI anyway?
Another question: Is it possible to set the primary display to the external Monitor when using "extended Desktop"?
    Thanks
    Ralph Menon

    Hello Ralph
Your unit doesnt support DVI port and you can not use it. As far as I know just ports that you can find on the unit you can use in Port Replicator because the signal is just loop through.
The problem with primary display is that notebook is set to primary one and it can not be changed (on my Tecra M1 neither). The Windows will starts on external one but box for password will always appears on notebook display.

  • Question about what cable needed

Anyone know what cable I need to hook the iPod up to a 2007 Tahoe with an iPod jack in the dash?

I need help on a particular cable. I heard that you can use your Ipod by using a 3.5 MM to 3.5 MM cable if the car receiver has a 3.5 MM jack, this also applies to PCs by plugging into the headphone jack of your PC. Does anyone know if it is also possible if you use the same setup for a home stereo receiver by plugging into the 1/4" headphone jack? I'm just thinking for convenience and instead of the plugging it into one of the rear inputs of the receiver, will this work? Thanks.

  • Question # 3 about the HDMI-DVI cable

OK...My older DVD player is working just fine with the component video cable.
Now let's suppose that DVD player eventually stops working and I replace it with a new one.
On the newer DVD players, does the HDMI-DVI cable take the place of the component video cable or do both cables need to be used?  Can the newer DVD players function with just the HDMI-DVI cable alone?

I actually just answered my own question right before I saw your reply.  But thank you for confirming what I thought.  That makes a lot of sense.  I already have my existing DVD player set up with the component video cable and you are correct about needing an audio cable.  I learned that through a process of elimination when I was setting that up and I have plenty of extra audio cables in my closet, so we're definitely on the same wavelength.  My existing DVD player doesn't have the HDMI capability but the component video cable is fine.  Now I just have a better understanding of how this works.   I believe that my existing DVD player is analog but it's very good and I will glady keep it until it goes.
I was also just fooling with my TV settings.  On my "source" list, I had had TV selected as source but I switched it to HDMI, which is what I already connected to my HDTV --- what a difference in sound and picture quality.

  • Question about Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter

I want to transfer the display from Dell XPS 15 to Dell ST2220M monitor.
Purchased a HDMI - DVI cable from ebay and tried using it. The laptop shows the monitor name but the display doesn't get passed onto the monitor. The monitor reads "No DVI-D cable".

    Hello everyone,
I have a couple of questions about the Satellite P300-18Z.
What "video out" does this laptop have? (DVI, s-video or d-sub)
Can I link the laptop up to a LCD-TV and watch movies on a resolution of 1080p? (full-HD)
What is the warranty on this laptop?

    Hello
According the notebook specification Satellite P300-18Z has follow interfaces:
DVI - No DVI port available
HDMI - HDMI-out (HDMI out port available)
Headphone Jack - External Headphone Jack (Stereo) available
.link - iLink (Firewire) port available
Line in Jack - No Line in Jack port available
Line out Jack - No Line Out Jack available
Microphone Jack - External Micrphone Jack
    TV-out - port available (S-Video port)
VGA - VGA (External monitor port RGB port)
Also you can connect it to your LCD TV using HDMI cable.
Warranty is country specific and clarifies this with your local dealer but I know that all Toshiba products have 1 year standard warranty and also 1 year international warranty. you can of course expand it.

  • New to Arch(64), with a few questions about Xorg and more

Hello and Happy New Year everyone,
I'm a user that has just recently decided to try and switch to Linux as the main OS for all things that don't concern gaming. I've been using the "server side" of Linux at work for a couple years now, but when it comes to its desktop part I consider myself not fully competent yet. Under recommendation of a friend I decided to give Arch a shot, and I can say that it really suits my philosophy on how an OS should be like.
I have a few issues I'm currently struggling with that I couldn't seem to solve by looking on my own: as they are mostly minor and shortly described, I thought about packing them up in one single thread to avoid making too many. I've used i686 as testing grounds and am now using x86_64, but most of my problems apply to both.
    Here's my hardware, for reference:
    - Intel E8400 CPU (3GHz, dual core)
    - Asus P5Q-E motherboard
    - 2 GB DDR2 800 RAM.
    - nVidia 8800GT video card with 512MB memory
    - Samsung SyncMaster 713BM flat panel, connected via DVI cable
    - Creative SBLive! 5.1 OEM card (dug up for the occasion since it has hardware mixing)
I'm using the latest Xorg from the repos, nvidia proprietary drivers, ALSA, Xfce4 + compiz-fusion, and SLIM as my login manager.
    And here are my headaches:
    - (32/64) A similar issue to the one I just mentioned: compiz-fusion doesn't seem to stick around as my window manager, even though I manually set it as per Method 2 from this wiki page. Although it did work for a while, after some time (perhaps after installing some package? but I didn't really install anything X related) it simply stopped working. To get my windows, I have to manually run fusion-icon after login.
    - (32/64) I'm using MPlayer with libass to watch my favourite anime, but sometimes MPlayer freezes up, forcing me to xkill it. Disabling ASS embedded subs yields error message 11, something about unsufficient resources. Disabling subs entirely prevents MPlayer from crashing. Oh, the errors only happen on specific points of certain videos, and all the videos work just fine under WinXP with MPC or VLC.
    - (32/64) Why do anti-aliased fonts under Linux still look so bad, even though I installed the appropriate packages suggested in the wiki? I don't mind disabling anti-aliasing entirely and just using Verdana, but is there some trick to it besides setting sub-pixel hinting under rclick->settings->user interface?
    - (32/64) My SBLive might be 5.1, but I'm only using the front connector as I use either two stereo speakers or headphones all the time. But the volume setting in applications (such as MPlayer) seems to affect the PCM meter of ALSA's mixer, putting it over 0 dB gain and generating sound distortion.
    - (64/don't know if 32 too) Why does Compiz's framerate drop so badly when I push alt-tab? I'm using the default application shifter, hardware acceleration, and there should be no reason why the framerate should drop like that (expecially considering that wobbly windows or cube rotating don't affect my performance at all). I've read around the net about very similar occourances with the task switcher, but I've found no real solution.
    - [SOLVED] (32/64) The first obstacle I came across was that I couldn't set my screen refresh any higher than 60Hz when I actually wanted 75Hz: I solved this by setting the vertical refresh to 76.0-76.0 in xorg.conf. However, for some reason this setting doesn't stick on reboot: I have to log in and manually run rclick->System->NVIDIA X Server Settings for it to apply.
    - [SOLVED] (64 only) The 32 version of Xorg was fine, but for some reason I'm not getting the correct keyset (Italian) under X, while everything works in vc. I think I read something about disabling a module called "keydev", but is this really the way to go?
    - [SOLVED] (64 only) Although I can hear sound in just about every application, the 64 bit version of Pidgin doesn't "ring" on received messages even though the associated option is enabled.
I kindly thank you in advance for your assistance: I will provide any configuration files that might be needed to help me out

Ah, I'd rather not involve Qt. Besides, isn't SMPlayer simply a frontend to Mplayer (who already has GMplayer integrated into it, IIRC)?

For all the three combos, I have "driver default" selected. The other option is "default"; I tried to manually type "Master" into the mixer channel field, but then gmplayer's windows and my Xfce taskbar started blinking, so I knew I had just "crossed streams".
Regarding NVIDIA X Server Settings, running "usr/bin/nvidia-settings --load-config-only" at login is the only way to apply the settings "automatically".
I've slapped that on my ~/.xinitrc before "exec startxfce4". Thanks in advance, going to test it now!
About the refresh and non-decorated windows issues (which *appears* to be solved after I've wiped the xfce-session cache), I've been thinking: could they somehow be related the login manager I've chosen, SLIM?
P.S. New question: is there any way to enable the ALT+num126 for ~ keyboard behaviour I'm used to under M$ environments?

  • What kind of DVI cable do I need?

Hi. I want to run video from my PB12 to my plasma TV (I know I need a separate audio cable).
I have the mini DVI to DVI adapter that came with the PB. My question is really, how many pins must the HDMI - DVI cable have? I see so many available with 18 (+1), but my adapter is 24 (+1).
Do I NEED a 24 pin, or can I use the much easier to find 18 pin?
    thanks!

I use the adaptor to transfer the signal to a VGA format and simply bought a VGA cable from monoprice.com. Very good deals on all kinds of cables.
I recently ordered a VGA cable for a friend and they sent me a DVI to HDMI cable by mistake. I bet that would work fine too. It would seem to me that DVI is DVI, and there aren't any optional connectors that will work without all the possible pins in place.....in other words, I don't know for sure about the pin thing...I'd just get a DVI to HDMI, at the length you need, and see if it works.

  • Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter or Mini-DVI to DVI cable?

I know Apple has a couple different Mini-DVI adapters for their Powerbook and MacBook computers. I don't especially like adapters and was wondering if anyone knows of a Mini-DVI to DVI cable.
Also, with the gaining popularity of HDMI, do you think we will ever see a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter or cable?

    Hi,
I know it is changing the subject, but I've been long frustrated by Apple's penchant for odd connectors, especially video connectors. Remember old quadras with 13 pin D connectors, powerbooks with square connectors, 7100s with I-don't-know-what connectors? All the while, ye olde VGA 15-pin D-sub connector was on just about everything else - even gas chromatographs.
We also got that funny mini-dix (Digital-Intel-Xerox) Ethernet connector on powerbooks when PCs were outfitted with familiar RJ-45 jacks. I did see one other machine that had the mini-dix: a government spec Zenith notebook.
I'm surprised Apple didn't use a VGA connector on the Macbook, given its above average exposure in the educational environment and greater than average odds of being hooked up to a lectern in a distance learning room. Pretty much to a tee, every distance learning setup I've seen has a VGA cable at the presenter's lectern. I worked in a university IT department, and it was pretty common for our loaner laptops to come back missing just about any ancillary goodie that could be misplaced. It isn't so bad to have to routinely stuff a new $2.00 cat-5 cable in the bag, but a $20.00 video dongle - not so good!
If Apple just couldn't countenance the idea of a VGA connector, I wonder how hard it would have been to have a normal size DVI connector? At least DVI-to-VGA connectors are easier to find, and better, aren't so expensive.

  • Mini DVI to DVI cable

I have the White 2.4 gig MacBook purchased summer of 08. Going to purchase an external LCD display for it probably with HDMI, DVI and RGB connectivity. I was wondering if someone knows where I can purchase a mini DVI to DVI cable that will connect the MacBook and display together without the bulky adapter Apple and others sell. I checked my local Apple retail store, the Mac Store and on line – nope.
Also any suggestions on displays with good viewing angles and quality text/pictures would be welcome. (I know it’s rather a subjective question) – I would like to purchase the new Apple 24” display but it only works with the latest MacBooks - besides a 20” display would probably be enough for me.
    Thanks for any suggestion,
    Steve

The mini-DVI port is an Apple product. They have an adapter available for $19. Dynex makes a clone of Apple's adapter and it sells for a couple bucks cheaper. There is not a mini-DVI to DVI cable that I know of. You would have to use the adapter and an extension (DVI to DVI).
Other than Apple's beautiful displays, Dell makes some displays with good reviews.

  • New imac to tv help:  mDVI to DVI cable, DVI to component video adapter?

I am getting my new imac tomorrow, very excited. I would love to be able to hook it up to my HD tv which has component video inputs.
It has two by the way, one says component video, one says component video HD. (that's the one my xbox is hooked up to.)
I think I'm getting like 1020p or something like that?
am aware of the lack of sound, but will have the imac hooked up to speakers so no worries on that.
will this chain work? mDVI-DVI cable, DVI to component video adapter? then what? component video cable to tv?
so I will need to buy two adapters and one cable right? Also, the cable is gonna need to be about 30ft long so will I be able to daisy chain cables?
PS, what kind of resolution will I be getting with the standard (none component HD) inputs?
thanks for the help. The info on the mac sight about adapters in not very specific to this hodge podge.

  • Mini display port- dvi cable- t.v.=snow

I want to connect my MacBook Pro to my television, and I get the image with only one problem. The t.v. is snowy. For the first few minutes, the image was perfect and I was callibrating the color, then I moved my laptop and the image on the t.v. jittered and snowed out. I don't care about the color, I'm sure I can fix that later. I just want the snow to go away first.

I was thinking the same, and wondered if I was going to have to exchange the different parts.
It turns out, oddly enough, that the DVI cable was screwed in too tightly. 0.o I hadn't screwed them in all the way initially, just enough to stay in place. I tightened them to see if that would help with the connection, and the t.v. did nothing but flicker. So I unscrewed them all the way in an attempt to find a happy medium. Now there's no snow. Hopefully, it'll stay that way

  • Few questions about Lenovo G550

Hello, I plan to buy an inexpensive laptop, propably it will be a Lenovo G550L but I got few questions about this model. Here are my questions:
    1. What 320GB hard disks are mounted inside G550L, Western Digital, Seagate or Hitachi (exact model if possible)?
    2. How are the hinges of LCD screen in this model, cause they look pretty weak. Do they break easy, does anyone got any experience with this type of hinges which are "forward type" instead of normal?
    2. I have noticed that there are two types of laptop chassis in this model one is matte black and another is grey glare. How to determine which model has which finish? Which finish got laptops with T4300, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Intel IGP x4500, no card reader, no hdmi.

my friend samsung any net, toshiba regza link, panasonic viera link is their special TM to support CEC
but just for their product not  other products, for instance a samsung dvd player and a samsung lcd can sync easily with with hdmi cable
and in this case you dont need an extra remote control to control dvd besides tv.just with having a remote you can control both of them or the other audio visual products from that campany
please think???? how could you control your lenovo when it does not have a remote?
every device need to send signals to the remote not by just some wires like HDMI
lcd has  a  remote and a dvd player also has a remote and if those are from a unit company, they share a common signal with HDMI cable ,then you could control both of them with just one remote.
this can ease your work,as you dont need a lot of remote around your devices
but they should be from just a unit producer cause they uses different protocols
and of course they want to sell their various products and oblige you to buy other products from that producer to have the compability for having just one remote.
