Question about evictor, application performance, and log growth

Hello,
I've got an application that using two BDB environments, one with critical data and one with data that can be reconstructed, just for the sake of backup convenience. For a while, I was getting OutOfMemoryErrors with increasing frequency. This caused the app to crash without closing the databases or the environment until the recovery time was around 30 minutes. After reading through many of the posts here and trying various workarounds, I got to a state where that stopped happening. I think that what did that fixed is was decreased the cache sizes.
Then, I was seeing what appeared to be evictor deadlocks. The application would hang for thirty minutes before a monitoring script that I've got would detect that no work was being done and would restart the application. Another round of searching ensued and I seem to have gotten it to a state where it doesn't run out of memory or deadlock anymore.
After getting rid of all these issues and letting it run for four or five days, the size of one of the critical BDB environment was 550GB. Since it was almost filling the drive, I moved it aside and created a new BDB for the app to use. Now, I'm trying to figure out what happened. It looks like the BDB contains about 15G of actual data.
It seems like everything starts out fine and then, somehow, it starts to collapse under the weight of itself. I'd like to figure out what type of abuse I may be guilty of that could cause this.
Here's a little bit about my application:
First (critical) BDB environment:
- add only, no deletes
- two databases
- average data sizes are 1k and 11k respectively
- average key sizes are around 80 and 16 bytes respectively
- almost no locality of reference to access pattern in either
- minimal lookups, mostly used as an archive
- cache size is 1MB
- 8 threads reading/writing, 40 threads reading only
Second (reconstructable) BDB environment:
- six databases
- five databases are mostly add with purges of two-week-old data
- one database has frequent adds and deletes
- lots of lookups, things are likely to be looked up shortly after they're added
- cache size is 64MB
- 40 threads reading/writing
On both environments,I've set je.evictor.forcedYield=true.
I'm running the JVM with:
-Xmx1800m
-Dje.adler32.chunkSize=8192
-XX:+UseMembar
JVM version is:
java version "1.6.0_01"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_01-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.6.0_01-b06, mixed mode)
BDB version is 3.2.23
OS/Kernel is:
Linux app2 2.6.9-42.0.10.ELsmp #1 SMP Fri Feb 16 17:17:21 EST 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
So, my question is:
What could cause the critical database (especially with no deletes) to grow to 550GB when there's only 15GB of data in it? It was my understanding that the cleaner should take care of any unused log file cruft. It seems like the log files grow faster as the performance gets worse. I have no idea which is the cause or the effect.
And, I guess the real question is how can I prevent this in the future?
Thanks,
-Justin

For the record, the problem was that the user's cache size was too small for the size of the database thereby creating a large number of records in the log when eviction of dirty records occurred. The cleaner was unable to keep up with the log load.
Note to readers: eviction of dirty records causes records to be written to the log. JE has to evict to somewhere and the log is what it uses.

  • Question about managing application licenses together with netboot

    Hello
So far I had made no experience with an MacOSX Server netboot configuration but we plan to introduce it in some weeks. Therefore we are "wondering" how management/assignment of application licenses is working in a netboot configuration. Normally in a local MacOSX configuration licenses for application are in generally assigned on the application (some are bound to a certain user name, others to the CPU ID) and is valid for all users login to the same computer. How and at which time are application licenses (for example MS Office 2004, Adobe Acrobat etc.) assigned in a netboot environment?
Many thanks in advance for any clarification and with best regards, André Müller

    Hi Andre,
Is this a technical or legal question Either way it is an interesting question about a major grey-area, and I wonder if anyone has the right answer.
Boiling your question down to specifics, it could be...
I have 15 individual Photoshop serials. I want to run Photoshop off a NetBoot image for 15 simultaneous users. Can I install one serial on the image, and allow 15 users to open Photoshop simultaneously. What if I want to install the image on 20 machines, but only 15 users will ever use Photoshop simultaneously.
There is a technical answer and a legal answer to the question. I don't know if there is a 'right' answer since multi-user installations of titles that are technically possible under NetBoot may not be allowed legally under the user license agreement you committed to on breaking the seal on the software. And these agreements are different for different countries.
Here's the technial answer. Sometime before OSX server 10.0, when Apple introduced netboot technology, developers were advised not to perform network scans checking for duplicate serial numbers when aps start up.
In practice this means you can install software title on your image, activate with a serial number, and it will not conflict with the other identical versions of the same application on other images on the network.
FileMaker Pro is the only software I am aware of that doesn't play by these rules, altthough it no longer checks when the applicaton starts, but when any FMPro network activity is started.
Here's the leagl answer. It depends on the title and the country you are in. The legality is definded under the eulas for the titles concerned. I don't know if the leaglity has ever been tested in a court of law in any country in this context.
The easy way to do the right thing for some titles it to purchase a multi-user serial number, ie. a single number which will work for 5 or 10, 20, 50... etc. users. Fore example, FileMaker has a volume licensing serial number which I beleieve can be purchased in increments of 10 users. However, not all titles offer this option, though, and it's difficult if you need 12 copies and have to buy 20.
Sassafras software http://www.sassafras.com/ sells Keyserver, which may be an appropriate solution. Keyserver tracks installations and authenticates serial numbers to ensure no more than the licensed number of copies can be run at the same time.
I don't think I've answerede your question for you but hope to have expanded the contxt of the question for other suggestions.
    Good luck,
    b.

  • Questions about streaming disk, firewire and SATA raids.

I have two internal drives, one for applications/system and one for audio, which had been suitable up until recently. I recently added Ivory, and some addons to the BFD drums. The BFD Deluxe has significantlly more velocity layers, and is placing a strain on computer and drives.
I moved the BFD drum data onto an external firewire 800 (because of data size) The BFD drums seem to be having a hard time keeping up, (it glitches and stutters).
I have 3 gig of ram, so I guess I'll add more ram. But I'm unsure about SATA raids. Is it better to add an external firewire RAID?... Mac Guru, has some reasonably priced kits. Has anyone had experience with them?
There is a 3 drive bay which you can put inside your G5, but I have concerns it will draw too much power and generate too much heat.
Lastly, if I buy a 4 bay external raid, can i create a 3 drive raid, and keep 1 one drive as a seperate drive (do I have to stripe all drives in one enclosure, or can they be seperate?
Any insights would be helpful.. thanx

depending on whether you use eSATA or FW, you have differnet options as to how you mount the drives as volume(s) to your computer. FW pretty much limits you to a single logical volume, although it could be RAID-0 or in some rare instances, RAID-5 with certain enclosures.
eSATA, again, depending on the specific enclosure, can mount all the drives as a single volume, but you may have the option to mount multiple logical volumes... like the 1 RAID-0 and 1 independent volume like you mentioned.
earlier tonight i recommended this drive to someone else for a laptop application...
    http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10724
for a desktop application, you would probably go with their 3.5" solutions since buss power is not important to you.
this might not be accurate, but this is my understanding of highest read/write performance to lowest in terms of general specs (certain products may have advantages / dissadvantages depending on the implementation) all RAID-0 volumes are assumed to be 2 drive RAID, although it is technically possible to do more with certain hardware.
    1) RAID-0 eSATA
    2) RAID-0 FW
    3) RAID-5 eSATA
    4) single eSATA
    5) single FW
    6) RAID-0 USB2
    7) RAID-5 FW
    8) single USB2
    9) RAID-5 USB2
RAID-5 is a real wild card here because a 3 drive image is really not the intended configuration for RAID-5... more drives is preferred before you start reaching theoretical efficiency and the actual XOR engine or lack of one can drastically affect your performance levels.

  • Questions about Real Application Testing(RAT)

    Hi All,
We have a production database running on 10gR3 on a server with local drives, while we have a Oracle 11gR2 DB running on a server with NFS mounts (using S7310 - AmberRoad) i.e. Faster and better storage.
We captured the load on 10gR3 and replayed it on 11gR2. We noticed the following:
    (1) Replay is considerably slow even though Oracle11gR2 instance has a faster storage. We suspect that it may be something to do with the buffer cache / SGA because there is nothing in cache on the target (we didn't shutdown 10gR2 DB for capture) – what should we do then?
    (2) To make sure that we can take the advantage of cache, we replayed the load 2nd time right after the 1st replay and everything ran to our surprise. So we are wondering how’s that possible since we did not restore the DB as we do not want to wipe off the cache (chicken and egg situation)? Does Oracle rollback the changes after the replay?
    (3) Do we have to restore database on Target every time we do replay? But if we do that then we won't have anything in the SGA.
So we need your advise and also would like to know how everyone else is doing this testing?
    Regards,
    RJiv.

DB Replay's workload capture facility allows you to either start capture from a closed (mounted) database (capture starts upon opening the DB), or to begin capture mid-stream during normal activity. Starting capture on the production system from a closed database eliminates the divergence in performance resulting from a primed cache, as well as possible data divergence issues from open, partially-completed transactions at the time the capture started.
For many customers, it will clearly not be possible to close their database during peak periods (!!)
One way to address the cache priming issue is to start capture in production from a closed state during a low period of activity, and the allow capture to run through the peak period.
Another approach is to start capture mid-stream with the DB open and to run capture for a long period (long enough to stabilize the cache). When performing the replay, begin a new AWR snapshot after the cache has stabilized.
Your question about running the replay again after the first replay is done is confusing. Of course you will not get meaningful data from that, since replay must begin from the capture start SCN. If you run replay twice in a row without reverting the database to the capture start SCN, it will be applying meaningless changes to a database in a state that is unlike that of the original. You will be testing the data errors codepath instead of real performance.
It is typical to enable database flashback on the repay database so that it can be repeatedly reverted to the capture start SCN for testing under a variety of scenarios.

  • Newbee questions about XE application builder

    Hi
I find that Oracle support someting that we can use to build some real database driven applications
i have some questions about it :
1-Does this application builder differ from Oracle 10g R2 Application builder ? i means is it limited ?
2-Does any one use it to build a real world application that works some where in some business place ?
3-what is its behind code and technology , does it use JSF and managed Beans ? how i can see the generted codes ?
    Thanks

    Hello,
Here's the link to the Application Express Forum Oracle Application Express (APEX)

  • Question about multiple application modules.

    Hello,
Suppose I have 2 database schema’s. For both schemas I have 1 application module. All view objects are in the same project.
For each application module I have an application definition.
Is it possible to link between these two applications? Because sometimes these database schema’s link to each other and you would like to jump from one application directly to the other.
For example you have orders locates in 1 DB schema and customers in another DB schema.
You would want to jump from the order directly to the customer details in the second schema.
Is this possible? Or do I need to make nested application modules etc?
I can find very little info about this; the JHS def guide does not offer much information about multiple application modules etc.
    -Anton

    Anton,
Yes, you can jump aroundd as you like.
You just can't use view links between VO's based on different db schema tables.
Nesting AM's doesn't help there, the DB connection of the top-level AM will be used.
Why don't you create synomyms for the tables in the other schema?

  • Some questions about Unity 4.0 and IPC

I have a couple of questions and I was looking for "real world" answers, not specific answers from the design guide.
1.What is this bandwidth requirement between Exchange and Unity and what is it used for?
    2. What sort of issues would we experience if we placed the Unity UM Server at the Colo and placed the Exchange server at the customer premise; with a single T1 between the sites?
3.What else is involved with a Unity UM install vs. a Unity VM install?
4.Does the Unity UM and Exchange servers have to be running AD?
    5. Can Unity or the Exchange box be the Domain Controller? Or does it need to be a separate server?
    6. Where does a vm message get streamed from? The Unity server or the Exchange server?

No you do not pay for FaceTime. It uses your WiFi network, so if you have access to WiFi it is free.
There is no server required for FaceTime, it will use a direct device to device protocol.
I can't answer the question about using phones in different countries as that will depend on if you buy a phone that is locked to a carrier.
If you buy a phone in Germany and it is locked to a German phone network then it will most likely not work with a SIM from Turkey. You would need to buy an unlocked phone which are very expensive as they do not have any carrier subsidy applied to the price.

  • Question about using 10g/11g and APEX ...

    Hi,
I just recently learned of Oracle's APEX and have a few questions about using it.
Can I use APEX with express, standard, and enterprise editions of 10g and 11g?
Are all of these free to use?

You might want to read about APEX rather than jumping into questions that are reasonably well documented. Info at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/index.html
    Your specific questions:
    1) Apex is a package that can be installed into any properly licensed database.
    2) The price for the production license of the database varies by edition.
The price for Express Edition is $0 for use in production. Part of the cost for that edition is 'no Oracle Support based support, no patches, data volume limitation, etc.'

  • Questions about JVC GZ HD7 and Final Cut

i'm planning to buy a JVC GZ HD7, but i have some questions about it...
    My imac configuration is
    Imac 20" late 2006
    1 Gb Ram
    Leopard 10.5.2
    Final Cut Studio 2
    Ok
    So my questions are:
1- When shooting the best setting for me is the 1440cbr, or 1920x1080
is better? i would like to have progressive instead of interlaced
moviefiles, but for what i have read the JVC HD7 only shoots interlaced...is possible to turn them into progressive after working in final cut?
2- In Final Cut Pro what are the sequence settings and the video
settings for a video shoot from this camera?
I would like to know the best settings possible for me,
regarding that i would like to edit in real time, no rendering needed,
and to have the best image quality that this camera can offer...

FCE is designed to work with DV/HDV files. It cannot work natively with MPEG2 files. You will need something like MPEG Streamclip to convert your files to a format that FCE understands
Streamclip is free but you need to buy Apple's MPEG Playback Component to make it work

  • Techie Question about iWeb, outbound links, and Google Analytics

    Hi,
I have a kind of pretty technical question about using Google Analytics (GA) with iWeb sites to measure clicks on outbound links. Here's the setup:
    1) My website's online, and GA is working properly.
    2) I don't sell stuff directly, but I do have a "Purchase" page which contains a link to a specific Amazon page.
    3) I'm pretty sure I can measure how many people go to the Purchase page using GA, but how do I measure whether visitors click on the Amazon link? It would be interesting to me to be able to gauge what the conversion rate is; that is, how many people actually proceed to purchase the product at Amazon.
I've checked the GA instructions and there's a page about manually tracking clicks on outbound links but it requires some code inputting. I know zero about coding, but I'm pretty sure that in iWeb you can't get access to the source code to input the required code.
Am I wrong about this? And if I am, then does anyone here know how to measure the clickthrough rate?
Anyway, hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

I don't know about the link tracking but you could have the link take you to a redirect page which automatically sends them to Amazon.com after a preset time, 0 seconds to whatever you'd like. You can put a counter on that redirect page, like StatCounter. StatCounter can tell you how many, from where they came, i.e country and area, repeat visits, etc.
Tutorials #12 & #13 describe how to put a visible counter on a page but with a redirect page you wouldn't have to bother since it wouldn't be seen. You can get all of your information from your account on the StatCounter site.
The redirect page would be a simple plain text page titled redirect.html and would look like this:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="refresh"
    content="0; Destination URL">
<title>Redirecting or whatever you'd like to appear at the top of the browser</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    </body>
    </html>
0 Is the number of seconds to wait before redirecting the visitor. If set to zero the visitor would not know they were being redirected. Replace Destination URL with the Amazon URL you want them to go to.

  • Question about the gray screen and wheel that keeps on spinning !

After an update (I now have Mavericks 10.9.3) Safari froze. I tryed starting it again, nothing.
I restarted my computer (imac early 2008) and got a gray screen,an apple logo and a spinning pin wheel!
I could get into Disk Utility to 'verify and repair', everything was apparently OK.
I saw a letter from a few years ago (where it was from, i can'nt remember) it suggested restarting with cammand+v
to show where the fault was, it then scolled down a lot of witten material and stoppe at :-    'Bootcachecontrol : unable
to open/var/db/Boot cache. Playlist :2 no such file or dirictory.     I have no idea what it means !
Can anybody help me ? I miss my Mac !
    Best Wishes from Jonathan Sandberg.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Question about suitability of iPhone and specific comparisons

I like the Verizon network (for which I'm considering upgrading to the Omnia II) but am thinking about biting the bullet and going to AT&T for the iPhone. I use Macs at home and at work. My main uses will be phonecalls (with reliable voice dialing from my car - bluetooth stereo and earpiece), mail (Exchange server access for calendar, mail, and addressbook), internet through the cellphone network (not wifi) - browsing, SFTP, VNC, etc., watching videos, photos, and listening to music, calendar reminders (as well as periodic sound reminders for missed calls, voicemails, etc.), opening PDF and Word documents, GPS (ideally with spoken driving directions),and Skype. Given these uses, can anyone advise me if there's anything here that is a problem for the iPhone?
    thanks,
    Mike

    "VNC"
There are pretty nice VNC clients for the platform, the best being Jaadu VNC. (See my just-published "Everything you will ever want to know about the remote desktop controllers on the iPhone" for more info if interested; it's been cross-posted to several iPhone forums. Not this one - yet - as I still don't have Level 1.)
    watching videos
The 3G S (but not the 3G!) is far better than current for example Windows Mobile or Symbian phones in that it can play back MPEG-4 / H.264 videos without excessive power consumption. That is, if all your videos are in this format, the 3G S is the way to go.
Nevertheless, if your videos are in DivX, XviD or - even worse - WMV, you won't be able to natively play them back - you'll need to transcode them first.
This, unfortunately, also means WMV streaming TV stations are far harder to watch than on, say, Windows Mobile. The only AppStore app ("Streamer") supporting them is really bad and delivers dismal performance, even on the 3G S.

  • I just have questions about the AirPort Express and how it works.

My household Wi-Fi is not the strongest in  my room and I found out about the AirPort Express and I read the overvie, but I still have some questions on how it works, how its setup and other questions as well.

The AirPort Express will not wirelessly extend the signal from another router unless that router is also an Apple product.
Not sure what other questions you might have, but we'll try to answer if you want to ask.
