Question about inheritance

I'm attempting to write Monopoly and I'm having some inheritance problems. Every space on the board is first and foremost of type BoardSpace however some of them are of type Property which extends BoardSpace and some are of type Chance/Community which also extend BoardSpace etc. Depending on what type of space it is something different happens. Right now heres how a couple of classes look. I'm having a problem where if I land on a space that doesn't define its own action method, it defaults to the BoardSpace action method as it should yet it goes into that if statement even when it clearly shouldn't be. Like if I land in jail, it will still go into that if statement, and it will print Jail (3 times). Is this something funky with inheritance?
BoardSpace:
public class BoardSpace extends JPanel
     Location loc;
     String name;
     public BoardSpace(String s, Location l)
          loc = l;
          name = s;
     public void action(Player p)
          if(name.equals("Go"));//If name is "go" how can it also be "jail" ?
               System.out.println(name);
               System.out.println(this.name);
               System.out.println(p.spot.name);
               p.money+=200;
}Property:
import javax.swing.*;
public class Property extends BoardSpace
     Player owner = null;
     public Property(String s, Location l)
          super(s,l);
     public void action(Player p)
          if(owner!=null && owner!=p)
               JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(this,"You landed on "+this.name+".\n This property is owned by Player" +owner.number+".\n You owe $5");
          else
               JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Buy?");
}

    One very basic question about inheritance.
    Why we need inheritance?
    the benefit of inheritance also achieve by creating instance of base class using it in other class instead of extending the base class.
    Can any one please explain why we are using inheritance instead of creating object of base class????

    One example of inheritance comes in the form of a vehicle. Each vehicle has similarities however they differ in their own retrospect. A car is not a bus, a bus is not a truck, and a truck is not a motorbike. If you can define the similarities between these vehicles then you have a class in which you can extend into either of the previous mentioned vehicles. Resulting in a reusable class, dramatically reduces the size of code, creates a single point of definition, increases maintainability, you name it.
    In short there are thousands of benefits from using inheritance, listing the benefits could take a while. A quick Google search should give you a few hundred k if not million links to read.

  • A little question about inheritance

    Can someone explain this to me?
    I have been reading about inheritance in Java. As I understand it when you extend a class, every method gets "copied" to the subclass. If this is so, how come this doesn't work?
    class inherit {
        int number;
        public inherit(){
            number = 0;
        public inherit(int n){
            number = n;
    class inherit2 extends inherit{
        public inherit2(int n, int p){
            number = n*p;
    class example{
        public static void main(String args[]){
            inherit2 obj = new inherit2();
    }What I try to do here is to extend the class inherit with inherit2. Now the obj Object is of inherit2 class and as such, it should inherit the constructor without parameters in the inherit class or shouldn't it ??? If not, then should I rewrite all the constructors which are the same and then add the new ones??

    I believe you were asking why SubClass doesn't have the "default" constructor... after all, shouldn't SubClass just have all the contents of SuperClass copy-pasted into it? Not exacly. ;)
    (code below... if you'd like, you can skip the first bit, start at the code, and work your way down... depending on if you just started, the next bit may confuse rather than help)
    Constructors are special... interfaces don't specify them, and subclasses don't inherit them. There are many cases where you may not want your subclass to display a constructor from it's superclass. I know this sounds like I'm saying "there are many cases where you won't want a subclass to act exactly like a superclass, and then some (extend their functionality)", but its not, because constructors aren't how an object acts, they're how an object gets created.
    As mlk said, the compiler will automatically create a default constructor, but not if there is already a constructor defined. So, unfortunatley for you, there wont be a default constructor made for SubClass that you could use to create it.
    class SuperClass { //formerly inherit
    int number;
    public SuperClass () { //default constructor
    number = 0;
    public SuperClass (int n) {
    number = n;
    class SubClass extends SuperClass { //formerly inherit2
    //DEFAULT CONSTRUCTOR, public SubClass() WILL NOT BE ADDED BY COMPILER
    public SubClass (int n, int p) {
    number = n*p;
    class Example {
    public static void main(String [] args) {
    //attempted use of default constructor
    //on a default constructorless subclass!
    SubClass testSubClass = new SubClass();
    If you're still at a loss, just remember: "Constructors aren't copy-pasted down from the superclass into the subclass!" and "Default constructors aren't added in if you add your own constructor in" :)
    To get it to work, you'd have to add the constructor you used in main to SubClass (like doopsterus did with inheritedClass), or use the constructor you defined in SubClass for when you make a new one in main:
    inherit2 obj = new inherit2(3,4);
    Hope that cleared things up further, if needed. By the way, you should consider naming your classes as a NounStartingWithACapital, and only methods as a verbStartingWithALowercase

  • A question about inheritance and overwriting

    Hello,
    My question is a bit complicated, so let's first explain the situation with a little pseudo code:
    class A {...}
    class B extends A{...}
    class C extends B {...}
    class D extends C {...}
    class E extends B {...}
    class F {
      ArrayList objects; // contains only objects of classes A to E
      void updateObjects() {
        for(int i = 0; i < objects.size(); i++)
          A object = (A) objects.get(i); // A as superclass
         update(A);
      void update(A object) { ... }
      void update(B object) { ... }
      void update(D object) { ... }
    }My question now:
    For all objects in the objects list the update(? object) method is called. Is it now called with parameter class A each time because the object was casted to A before, or is Java looking for the best fitting routine depending on the objects real class?
    Regards,

    Why extends is evil
    Improve your code by replacing concrete base classes with interfaces
    Summary
    Most good designers avoid implementation inheritance (the extends relationship) like the plague. As much as 80 percent of your code should be written entirely in terms of interfaces, not concrete base classes. The Gang of Four Design Patterns book, in fact, is largely about how to replace implementation inheritance with interface inheritance. This article describes why designers have such odd beliefs. Reveal the magic behind subtype polymorphism
    Behold polymorphism from a type-oriented point of view
    http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-04-2001/jw-0413-polymorph_p.html
    Summary
    Java developers all too often associate the term polymorphism with an object's ability to magically execute correct method behavior at appropriate points in a program. That behavior is usually associated with overriding inherited class method implementations. However, a careful examination of polymorphism demystifies the magic and reveals that polymorphic behavior is best understood in terms of type, rather than as dependent on overriding implementation inheritance. That understanding allows developers to fully take advantage of polymorphism. (3,600 words) By Wm. Paul Rogers

    Downcasting and run-time
    http://www.codeguru.com/java/tij/tij0083.shtml
    type identification
    Since you lose the specific type information via an upcast (moving up the inheritance hierarchy), it makes sense that to retrieve the type information ? that is, to move back down the inheritance hierarchy ? you use a downcast. However, you know an upcast is always safe; the base class cannot have a bigger interface than the derived class, therefore every message you send through the base class interface is guaranteed to be accepted. But with a downcast, you don?t really know that a shape (for example) is actually a circle. It could instead be a triangle or square or some other type.
    To solve this problem there must be some way to guarantee that a downcast is correct, so you won?t accidentally cast to the wrong type and then send a message that the object can?t accept. This would be quite unsafe.
    In some languages (like C++) you must perform a special operation in order to get a type-safe downcast, but in Java every cast is checked! So even though it looks like you?re just performing an ordinary parenthesized cast, at run time this cast is checked to ensure that it is in fact the type you think it is. If it isn?t, you get a ClassCastException. This act of checking types at run time is called run-time type identification (RTTI). The following example demonstrates the behavior of RTTI:
    //: RTTI.java
    // Downcasting & Run-Time Type
    // Identification (RTTI)
    import java.util.*;
    class Useful {
    public void f() {}
    public void g() {}
    class MoreUseful extends Useful {
    public void f() {}
    public void g() {}
    public void u() {}
    public void v() {}
    public void w() {}
    public class RTTI {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    Useful[] x = {
    new Useful(),
    new MoreUseful()
    x[0].f();
    x[1].g();
    // Compile-time: method not found in Useful:
    //! x[1].u();
    ((MoreUseful)x[1]).u(); // Downcast/RTTI
    ((MoreUseful)x[0]).u(); // Exception thrown
    } ///:~
    As in the diagram, MoreUseful extends the interface of Useful. But since it?s inherited, it can also be upcast to a Useful. You can see this happening in the initialization of the array x in main( ). Since both objects in the array are of class Useful, you can send the f( ) and g( ) methods to both, and if you try to call u( ) (which exists only in MoreUseful) you?ll get a compile-time error message.
    If you want to access the extended interface of a MoreUseful object, you can try to downcast. If it?s the correct type, it will be successful. Otherwise, you?ll get a ClassCastException. You don?t need to write any special code for this exception, since it indicates a programmer error that could happen anywhere in a program.
    There?s more to RTTI than a simple cast. For example, there?s a way to see what type you?re dealing with before you try to downcast it. All of Chapter 11 is devoted to the study of different aspects of Java run-time type identification.
    One common principle used to determine when inheritence is being applied correctly is the Liskov Substitution Principle (LSP). This states that an instance of a subclass should be substitutible for an instance of the base class in all circumstances. If not, then it is generally inappropriate to use inheritence - or at least not without properly re-distributing responsibilities across your classes.
    Another common mistake with inheritence are definitions like Employee and Customer as subclasses of People (or whatever). In these cases, it is generally better to employ the Party-Roll pattern where a Person and an Organization or types of Party and a party can be associated with other entities via separate Role classes of which Employee and Customer are two examples.

  • Question about inheritance and  casting

    according to the java api it said Calendar() is a super-class of GregorianCalendar(). with that said it means GC inherits all members of C(). i hope everyone agrees with me here.
    why is it necessary to do this:
    Calendar c = new GregorianCalendar();//by the way this is called implicit casting per the java tutorial.if GC inherits everything from C, and if you need members from both classes, then wouldn't it be enough to just do
    GregorianCalendar gc = new GregorianCalendar();why is it necessary to declare a variable of the parent class and assign a subclass reference to that variable?

    then why does the tutorial show this?Why not? It's legal Java. It's what I would probably write, unless I knew I was going to use some methods that were in GregorianCalendar and not in Calendar.

  • Quick question about inheritance and exceptions

    If I have two classes like this:
    public class ClassA {
        public void myMethod() throws NumberFormatException {
          throw new NumberFormatException();
    public class ClassB extends ClassA {
        public void myMethod() {
    }Does myMethod() in classA override myMethod in classB?
    And why?
    Thank you,
    V

    I just want to add that since NumberFormatException is
    a descendant of RuntimeException, you are not required
    to declare that the method throws this exception. Some
    people think it is a good idea to declare it anyway
    for clarity. Personally, I don't think so.I agree.
    I think Sun recommends that you don't declare unchecked exceptions in the method declaration, but do document them in the javadoc comments.

  • A question about Inheritance

    Hi,
    I have created a class which implements java.sql.Connection.
    class newConnnection implements Connection{
        close(){
            freeConnection();
    }In my main class I am assigning newConnection object to a Connection object because I want to use the Connection's close method to actually close the connection.
    main{
        newConnection newConn = newConnection();
        Connection conn = (Connection)newConn
        conn.close();
    }But it doesn't use the Connection class method. It uses the newConnection class method. Is there any way I can make use of the Connection method close?
    Thanks.

    But here's what I'm actually doing:
    I think that there is still a way I can use the Connection object.
    // Close all connections in the connection list
         public void closeConnections(Vector connList) throws SQLException{
              Enumeration connections = connList.elements();
              while(connections != null && connections.hasMoreElements()){
                   Connection connection = (Connection)connections.nextElement();
                   if(!connection.isClosed())
                        connection.close();
    connections contains objects but they are the newConnection objects. So when they get assigned to connection, connection actually turns into newConnection and ends up calling the newConnection.close() method

  • Question regarding Inheritance.Please HELP

    A question regarding Inheritance
    Look at the following code:
    class Tree{}
    class Pine extends Tree{}
    class Oak extends Tree{}
    public class Forest{
    public static void main(String args[]){
      Tree tree = new Pine();
      if( tree instanceof Pine )
      System.out.println( "Pine" );
      if( tree instanceof Tree )
      System.out.println( "Tree" );
      if( tree instanceof Oak )
      System.out.println( "Oak" );
      else System.out.println( "Oops" );
    }If I run this,I get the output of
    Pine
    Oak
    Oops
    My question is:
    How can Tree be an instance of Pine.? Instead Pine is an instance of Tree isnt it?

    The "instanceof" operator checks whether an object is an instance of a class. The object you have is an instance of the class Pine because you created it with "new Pine()," and "instanceof" only confirms this fact: "yes, it's a pine."
    If you changed "new Pine()" to "new Tree()" or "new Oak()" you would get different output because then the object you create is not an instance of Pine anymore.
    If you wonder about the variable type, it doesn't matter, you could have written "Object tree = new Pine()" and get the same result.

    Dear Peter (if I be so personal).  First, thank you for deleting my Email
    address on the post and saving me a lot of spam.  Further, you were most
    gracious in sending more specifics in regard to the answer of my question about
    using PM files in InDesign.
    However, I am trying hard to understand your instructions to unembed "links" and
    bring them up to date.  However, I have no idea of what links are, are they
    something I would have intentionally done or are they automatic, and something
    of which I have no control over?  How do I locate them?  Are these procedures
    also necessity for using my old Photoshop 6 files?
    I only use 2 Programs: PageMaker 6.5 and Photoshop 6.  I have inherited a newer
    Mac with OS 10.6.8 which has only the basic Mac programs in it.  As you can
    guess, I need to identify which are the proper newer programs to obtain for it,
    with the least bit of effort and understanding.
    I use PageMaker to write letters, and compose stories for printing in a Club
    magazine.  I also resurrect previous stories, that I've stored through the
    years.
    In Photoshop, I fix up new and old pictures for inclusion in stories and also
    resurrect previous photos I've stored on an external Hard Drive, or placed on a
    CD.
    If you would be so kind to steer me in the right direction, I will be most
    appreciative.  Trying to understand computer things is hard for me, and often

  • Question about session variables and binding

    Hi All,
    I'm a newbie with Application Express. I've gone through several tutorials and a book, and now I'm actually getting started with apex. My first adventure is a tiny little form, where all you do is fill it out and it sends an email. Pretty simple.
    And, i have it working just fine - but I have a question about something I don't quite understand. Basically, I am generating the email text in a page process. And some of the form fields work fine if i reference them as *:ACCT_NAME*, but some give me the dreaded "not all variables bound" error. For the ones that give me the error, I can reference them like V('ACCT_NAME').
    So, as a newbie, I'm a little confused. When is it appropriate to use the V function, and when it is appropriate to use binding? Why would one of the fields work with binding but not another from the same form?
    Thanks for any clarification you can offer,
    Lisa

    Lisa,
    A bind variable is a place holder variable available in an environment.It is used quite frequently(outside Apex Context) in SQL and PLSQL scripts and especially in Dynamic SQL statements.Many times using a bind variable gives better performance. In the Apex environment,page items and many other variables related to the session are available as bind variables and hence their value can be referred in SQL,PLSQL contexts as :VARIABLE_NAME.
    Now V() function is an apex specific function which returns the value of an apex session variable outside the apex environment. So as Machaan pointed out, it is used in
    procedures and triggers that gets called from within an apex session. This is required since the bind variables themselves are not directly available in the SQL environment but their values from the corresponding session can be accessed by this apex built-in function.
    The length of any Bind variable name is limited to 30 characters, this is a limitation inherited from Oracle SQL itself and hence session variables(page or application items) whose name has a length which exceeds 30 characters cannot be used as the :ITEM_NAME format. In such cases you would have to use the v() method again. This might be happening in your case.

    I'm currently an Android user, but will be getting an iPhone 6 soon. My most used app is the voice memos app on my Android phone. I have a couple questions about the iPhone's built-in voice memos app.
    -Am I able to transfer my voice memos from my Android phone to my iPhone, so my recordings from my Android app will show up in the iPhone's voice memos app?
    -When exporting voice memos from the iPhone to computer, are recordings in MP3 format? If not, what format are they in?
    -In your opinion, how is the recording quality of the voice memos app?

    You cannot import your Android voice memos to your iPhone's voice memo app.  You might be able to play the Android memos and have the iPhone pick up the audio and record it.
    Here is the writeup about sending voice memos from the iPhone to your computer (from the iPhone User Guide):
    App quality is excellent.

    Can I link the laptop up to a LCD-TV and watch movies on a resolution of 1080p? (full-HD)
    What is the warranty on this laptop?

    Hello
    According the notebook specification Satellite P300-18Z has follow interfaces:
    DVI - No DVI port available
    HDMI - HDMI-out (HDMI out port available)
    Headphone Jack - External Headphone Jack (Stereo) available
    .link - iLink (Firewire) port available
    Line in Jack - No Line in Jack port available

  • Some questions about Muse

    First of all, I would like to say that I am very impressed with how well Muse works and how easy it was to create a website that satisfies me. Before I started a daily updated website I thought I would encounter many problems I will not be able to solve. I have only had a few minor issues which I would like to share with you.
    The most problems I have with a horizontal layouts (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/dig-t-r-3-cylindrowy-silnik-nissana-o-wadze-40-kg-i-mocy-400- km.html). Marking and copying of a text is possible only on the last (top) layer of a document. The same situation is with widgets or anything connected with rollover state - it does not work. In the above example it would be perfect to use a composition/tooltip widget on the first page. Unfortunately, you cannot even move the cursor into it.
    It would be helpful to have an option of rolling a mouse to an anchor (like in here http://www.play.pl/super-smartfony/lg-nexus-5.html and here http://www.thepetedesign.com/demos/onepage_scroll_demo.html).  I mean any action of a mouse wheel would make a move to another anchor/screen. It would make navigation of my site very easy.
    Is it possible to create a widget with a function next anchor/previous anchor? Currently, in the menu every button must be connected to a different anchor for the menu to be functional.
    A question about Adobe Muse. Is it possible to create panels in different columns? It would make it easier to go through all the sophisticated program functions.
    The hits from Facebook have sometimes very long links, eg.
    (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/mclaren-p1-nowy-krol-nurburgring.html?fb_action_ids=143235557 3667782&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_source=aggregation&fb_aggregation_id=288381481237582). If such a link is activated, the anchors in the menu do not work on any page. I mean the backlight of an active state, which helps the user to find out where on page they currently are. The problem also occurs when in the name of a html file polish fonts exist. And sometimes the dots does not work without any reason, mostly in the main page, sometimes in the cooperation page either (http://www.leftlane.pl/wspolpraca/). In the first case (on main page), I do not know why. I have checked if they did not drop into a state button by accident,  moved them among the layers, numbered them from scratch and it did not help. In the cooperation page, the first anchor does not work if it is in Y axle set at 0. If I move it right direction- everything is ok.
    The text frame with background fill does not change text color in overlay state (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/nowe-mini-krolestwo-silnikow-3-cylindrowych.html). I mean a source button at the beginning of every text. I would like a dark text and a light layer in a rollover, but  the text after export and moving cursor into it does not change color for some reason.
    I was not sure whether to keep everything (whole website) in one Muse file (but I may be mistaken?). I have decided to divide it into months. Everyone is in a different Muse file. If something goes wrong, I will not have any trouble with an upload of a whole site, which is going to get bigger and bigger.
    The problem is that every file has two master pages. Everything works well up to the moment when I realize how many times I have to make changes in upper menu when I need to add something there. I have already 5 files, every with 2 masters. Is there any way to solve this problem? Maybe something to do with Business Catalyst, where I could connect a menu to every subpage independently, deleting it from Muse file? Doing so I would be able to edit it everywhere from one place. It would make my work much easier, but I have no idea jendak how to do it.
    The comments Disqus do not load, especially at horizontal layouts  (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/2014-infiniti-q50-eau-rouge-concept.html). I have exchanged some mails and screenshots with Disqus help. I have sent them a screenshot where the comments are not loaded, because they almost never load. They have replied that it works at their place even with attached screenshot. I have a hard time to discuss it, because it does not work with me and with my friends either. Maybe you could fix it? I would not like to end up with awful facebook comments ;). The problem is with Firefox on PC and Mac. Chrome, Safari and Opera work ok.
    YouTube movie level layouts do not work well with IE11 and Safari 7 (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/wypadki-drogowe--004.html). The background should roll left, but in the above mentioned browsers it jumps up. Moreover the scrolling with menu dots is not fluent on Firefox, but I guess it is due to Firefox issues? The same layout but in vertical version rolls fluently in Firefox (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/polskie-wypadki--005.html).
    Now, viewing the website on new smartphones and tablets. I know it is not a mobile/tablet layout, but I tried to make it possible to be used on mobile hardware with HD (1280) display. I mean most of all horizontal layouts (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/2015-hyundai-genesis.html), where If we want to roll left, we need to roll down. Is there a way to make it possible to move the finger the direction in which the layout goes?
    On Android phones (Nexus 4, Android 4.4.2, Chrome 32) the fade away background effect does not work, although I have spent a lot of time over it (http://www.leftlane.pl/lut14/koniec-produkcji-elektrycznego-renault-fluence-ze!.html). It is ok on PC, but on the phone it does not look good. A whole picture moves from a lower layer instead of an edge which spoils everything.
    This layout does not look good on Android (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/nowe-mini-krolestwo-silnikow-3-cylindrowych.html#a07). The background does not fill the whole width of a page. There are also problems with a photo gallery, where full screen pictures should fill more of a screen.
    Is it possible to make an option of  scroll effects/motions for a fullscreen slideshow widget thumbnails (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/2014-chevrolet-ss%2c-rodzinny-sedan-z-415-konnym-v8.html#a06)? It would help me with designing layouts. Currently, it can go from a bottom of a page at x1 speed or emerge (like in this layout) by changing opacity. Something more will be needed, I suppose.
    Sometimes the pictures from gallery (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/2014-chevrolet-ss%2c-rodzinny-sedan-z-415-konnym-v8.html#a06 download very slowly. The website is hosted at Business Catalyst. I cannot state when exactly it happens, most of the time it works ok.
    I really like layouts like this (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/2014-chevrolet-ss%2c-rodzinny-sedan-z-415-konnym-v8.html#a03). On the top is a description and a main text, and the picture is a filled object with a hold set at the bottom edge. That is why there is a nice effect of a filling a whole screen- nevertheless the resolution that is set. It works perfect on PC, but on Android the picture goes beyond the screen. You can do something about it?
    In horizontal layouts (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/dig-t-r-3-cylindrowy-silnik-nissana-o-wadze-40-kg-i-mocy-400- km.html) holding of a filling object does not work. Everything is always held to upper edge of a screen regardless the settings. Possibility of holding the picture to the bottom edge or center would make my work much easier.
    According to UE regulations we have to inform about the cookies. I do not know how to do it in Muse. I mean, when the message shows up one time and is accepted, there would be no need to show it again and again during another visit on the website. Is there any way to do it? Is there any widget for it maybe?
    The YouTube widget sometimes changes size just like that. It is so when the miniature of the movie does not load, and the widget is set to stroke (in our case 4 pixels, rounded to 1 pixel). As I remember ( in case of a load error) it extends for 8 pixels wide.
    Last but not least - we use the cheapest hosting plan in Business Catalyst. The monthly bandwidth is enough, although we have a lot of pictures and we worried about it at first. Yet we are running out of the disk storage very quickly. We have used more than a half of a 1 GB after a month. We do not want to change BC for a different one, because we like the way it is connected with Muse. But we do not want to buy the most expensive package - but only this one has more disk space. We do not need any other of these functions and it would devastate our budget. Do we have any other option?
    I’m using Adobe Muse 7.2 on OS X 10.9.1.
    and I'm sending Muse file to <[email protected]>

    Unfortunatley, there is no way to get a code view in Muse. I know quite a few people requested it in the previous forum, but not really sure where that ended up. Also, you may not want to bring the html into DW unless you only have 1 or 2 small changes 2 make. Two reasons. First, it isnt backwards compatible, so if you are planning on updating that site in Muse, you will need to make those changes in DW everytime you update. Second, by all accounts the HTML that Muse puts out is not pretty or easy to work with. Unlike you, I am code averse, but there was a lenghty discussion on the previous forum on this topic. I know they were striving to make it better with every release, just not sure where it is at this point.
    Dont think I am reading that second question right, but there was a ton of info on that old site. You may want to take a look there, people posted a ton of great unique solutions, so it worth a look.
    Here is the link to the old forums- http://support.muse.adobe.com/muse
