Question about upgrading to Leopard (MBP) from Tiger (PB G4)

Hey everyone, I got an imporant question, which actually will decide what would I buy/do, hope some of you can help me please!
Ok, so first of all, this is my situation:
I got a Powerbook G4 12-inch (bought in December 2005) and I never bought any upgrades of iLife to it...so it still has iLife 05. Now, this mac is not working anymore for me cause I need more speed/room and besides I want Leopard and this thing can't do Leopard (it has 1.5GHz, 512MB). So I already got my buyer and I also bought an external HD from the Apple Online Store (the iomega with 500GB) so I can clone the HD of my current mac.
My plan is to buy a new MacBook Pro in Januray, right after Macworld, that is 15th and then when it is in the setup for Leopard mount this hard drive that has a clone from my old computer to the new MBP.
So my question is: If I mount and setup Leopard from the clone of my powebook, would I lose the extras such as iLife 08 (maybe it would make me go back to iLife 05?) or Front Row and that sort of stuff? and also, can I erase later the whole external disc so I can use its 100% capacity in Time Machine?
Thanks in advance for the help!
-Fernando

...so all I can do now is to use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my PowerBook G4's drive to my external FireWire HD?
Yes that is all you can do today.
...and to clarify, I only need to use Migration Assistant in the MBP after the installation of Leopard, until the Welcome to Mac screen appears?
No. The new MacBook Pro will already have Leopard installed. You will simply be going through the "Welcome to Mac" process because it is a new Mac and you are powering it on for the first time.
oh, and would it make go back to iLife 05 or it will keep the iLife 08 apps?
iLife '08. Like I said Migration Assistant doesn't blindly copy files.

    Niel...
I installed Leopard 10.5.6 and then it upgraded to 10.5.8, when I installed it I had the old info saved to a "previous systems" folder, where most of my artwork, etc. were saved, I have a one terabyte Lacie backup that unfortunately did not work as it was intended...it saved the new info and not the old. I did look into the system preferences folder and found the classic file, of course it wouldn't launch...but I have the old G 5 startup discs and will try to do it as you stated. I will try also to move it out of the previous folders file to my hard drive and see how that works.
thank you for your time and help,

  • Question about upgrading iTunes multiple computers with shared library

    Greetings,
I have a question about upgrading to the current version of iTunes.
Currently, my household uses 3 Mac computers (2 Powerbook 17in laptops and a Mack Mini). We are all (currently) on system 10.4.11 (with iTunes 9.2.1). Between the 3 computers we have a shared iTunes music and video library on a networked high capacity hard drive.
We recently purchased an iPad. In order to make it easy for updates and to use media from our iTunes shared library I decided that we should upgrade the systems on our home computers to Snow Leopard. I have ensured that all the computers have at lease 2 Gb of RAM and adequate hard drive space.
The only possible problem I see is that one of the Powerbook laptops uses the old Motorola processor. (This is one of the last Powerbooks to use that processor.) I don’t think this computer can be upgraded to Snow Leopard.
My question is, if I upgrade 2 of the computers (and iTunes in the process), will I still be able to access the shared iTunes library using the older computer with the older system and iTunes? Will the upgrade process change the iTunes library in such a way that the one older computer will no longer be able to properly access that library?
Are there any other problems I might encounter having a mixed system/iTunes environment?
    Thank you,
    Tim

Just a thought. Should I somehow open iTunes on MBP2 using MBP1's Library file??
both Macs can access the same library file, however, only one at a time !
to do that, you would ideally have the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) on the external. then, on one Mac after the other, launch iTunes while holding the option key, click on +choose library+ when prompted, and select the iTunes folder on the external.
or, you could have two separate libraries and keep those in sync using third party tools such as Syncopation, TuneRanger or SuperSync.
for purchases from the iTunes store, you could set up _*Home Sharing*_ - it can be configured to automatically transfer new purchases to home shared libraries.
Can I create a script to have MBP1 always save the iTunes Library file on the shared hard drive?
    no need.

Hi Everyone I'm New, Got Question About Upgrading MSI GT60 0ND With SSD.
:welcome:So As I've stated I'm new here, or at least got a new MSI notebook.
Ive got the new MSI gt60 0ND with 750GB HD and 675 Ge-Force GTX , anyways to the bottom line.
I would like to Upgrade my computer with SSD that I bought and install the win8 on it, in order to speed things up, but I have encountered a few problems..
    1. there is no sticker on the back of the computer that gives information about the serial number of my windows 8...
    2. lets say in some magical way I could get the serial number out, can I use it to reinstall ? because Ive heard that you cannot use this CD key anyways unless you got a special win8 installation CD key from MSI because its MSI branded windows 8.
am I screwed    ? ?? ? I thought it is possible to upgrade with SSD but it seems like MSI made it very hard, I do not understand why they even putted the warranty void sticker on the expansion bay's .... WEIRD..

  • Several Questions about upgrading APEX

    Hello,
I a several questions about upgrading APEX.
I want to upgrade my APEX 2.0 to 2.2 and hopefully in a few month to 3.0.
Is there a How To about upgrading APEX?
What would happen to my applications?
Would there be any problems about the applications when the APEX version is upgraded to another version?
    Thank you,
    Tim

    Tim,
Yes there is (detailed) upgrade documentation provided with the upgrade itself, which you should definitely look through. The 2.2 and 2.2.1 releases are currently available here -
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/index.html
You applications will be 'upgraded' as part of the upgrade process (i.e. they will continue to work with the new software once the upgrade is complete).

  • Question about upgrade and original iPhone

There might be other thread already, but have a question about upgrade to 3G.
I have the original iPhone and have upgraded to iPhone 3G.
The question is whether I can use the original iPhone indefinitely.
People at Apple store was telling me I can use the original iPhone (without the phone functionality) as long as I don't restore the firmware.
Is this true? What happens if Apple releases firmware in the future? Would this mean that I can only use this as long as machine doesn't require restore? I wanted to give it to one of my family members so she can use it as iPod so any info would be helpful ....

My understanding is the same as the Apple Store Employee.
If you try to update the software on an iphone with no service, I believe that it will be rendered useless.
It may be possible to swap the SIM card for software upgrades, etc., not sure.

  • If I upgrade my iMac G4 from Tiger OSX 10.3.9 to Leopard OSX 10.5 will Firefox work properly as it will not allow me to upgrade and so I am losing out on much of what Firefox does?

The message is That I am using an older version of Firefox but I can't upgrade to the most recent version (within the last year) and I am losing the ability to do things. For example, I can't send out emails from Gmail now, the type on the screens of many web sites is squeezed small and some web pages are "scrambled" in appearance. Before I purchase an upgrade to the Leopard OSX 10.5 I would like to know if Firefox works properly with it?

Well, with a PPC Mac you can upgrade as far as Firefox 3.6.19 if you upgrade from Tiger OSX 10.3.9 to Leopard OSX 10.5, but Firefox doesn't support PPC architecture in the latest Firefox 4, 5, and 6.0 versions.
    For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4.0 & 5.0, try TenFourFox for PowerPC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 . <br />
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
But, you still need to carefully investigate if your hardware specs are sufficient for either Firefox 3.6.19 or for 10-4Fox.

  • Questions about upgrading from Exchange 2010 RTM to Exchange 2010 Service Pack 3

I am preparing to perform an maintenance upgrade on our current Exchange 2010 Server, to Service Pack 3 (and any post-SP3 roll ups), but I have a couple questions about the process.
    Current Exchange Server details:
    Exchange 2010 Standard
Version: 14.0 (Build 639.21) - from Exchange Management Console
Version: 14.0.702.4000 - from Outook client
Active Directory forest and domain levels: Windows 2008 R2 native
    The questions I have are:
    1.  Can I assume that because it's version 10.0.702.4000 I am on Exchange Server 2010 RTM Update Rollup 4?
    2.  Can Exchange 2010 Standard RTM be patched directly to Service Pack 3, or would I need to perform incremental patches (i.e. SP1, SP2, etc.) before going to SP3?
    3.  Do I need to manually perform the AD domain schema prep before applying Service Pack 3, or will the Service Pack 3 update process automatically handle the modifications of the AD schema?

    Hi,
Here are my answers you can refer to:
    1. Firstly, I’d like to explain , we can use connection status to check our Exchange server version from Outlook client:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/outlook-help/determine-the-version-of-microsoft-exchange-server-my-account-connects-to-HA010117038.aspx
And I check my version from both EMC and Outlook client. It’s same.
    2. We can directly update RTM version to SP3 , and the update will take an additional 30 minutes or longer per database.
    3. Since Exchange 2010 SP3 makes updates to the Active Directory schema, we need prepare AD domain schema. However, it will automatically prepare AD and the domain when you install the update.
For more information, you can refer to the following article:

  • Question about transferring to new mbp

I am a senior in high school this year and have had my macbook since 8th grade and can't even begin to say how much I love it! I am most likely going to be getting a new mbp in the near future for college and had a few questions about transferring files/applications over. I am pretty good with computers and yes I do realize that there is the migration assistant as well as time machine backups. I have kept time machine backups on an external drive ever since leopard and want to know when I get the new machine if I could just do a time machine restore. (Would this method keep the new ilife on the new mbp because I don't have 09) I also also upgraded the hdd from an 80gb to a 320 gb drive and have partitioned it to run win7 through bootcamp. Would win7 and all the settings automatically be transferred as well. In addition I am using virtual box to run ubuntu within osx. I have also downloaded countless applications online and wanted to know how they would transfer over If I don't have the disk or serial numbers to them. It seems it may be easier just to slap this hdd in the new mbp but I'm not sure if thats possible. Again thanks for the help

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If your old Macbook is a Intel based machine it would be to your benefit to use Migration Assistant to get your new MBP up. With MA assistant you have options of transferring information from your Macbook from either Firewire, USB or Ethernet connections. MA will walk you through how to connect the two machines together and ask what data you want transferred. If the Macbook is Intel based and you choose all of the options MA will make a mirror of the settings, data etc.. onto the new MBP. If your old machine is a PPC machine it is strongly advised not migrate items such as applications to the new machine due to possible incompatibilities. MA will also ask if you want to use a Time Machine drive to migrate the data to the new machine so you do have options. If you choose that route remember Time Machine _does not_ back up Windows so you would not be able to migrate that information using MA.
Your question has been asked many many times, I would recommend do a thread search and you will find some very useful information.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • Can't connect to Leopard MBPro from Tiger Mini

    Hi all!
I have looked everywhere I could and did not find what I am doing wrong, so please any idea is welcome!
I installed Leopard on a brand-new MacBook Pro yesterday (love it!) and the only thing puzzling me is I can't seem to connect to the MBP from two computers still running Tiger. I see both computers in the Shares of the MBP and I can access everything. But on the Mini and the MacPro, I see the MBP, click "Connect" and then I get this window: "AFP connection status. Looking up "Guylaine-xxx-MBP.local." with a "Cancel" option. Which I have to do because it just hangs like this, without connecting... If I wait, I get this message:"Connection failed. The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again."
On the MBP Sharing Preferences, I have turned on Screen Sharing, File Sharing and Remote Login. I have only selected "Share files using AFP" since only macs will connect to it. But I don't think I should even need all of those just to share my files...
I think I remember reading something about using same user on two machines can cause problems, but I couldn't find it and I don't recall exactly what the trouble would be... Could that be it?
    Any help would be appreciated...

    Found it.

  • A question about upgrades and mroe upgrades

I've got a question about the upgrade sequence and costs thereof
I have CS5.5 Production Premium. Suppose I upgrade to CS6 production Premium. If, when CS6.5 comes out and I decided to upgrade, would it be considered an upgrade from 5.5 or 6 for pricing purposes?
I presume the older the software the more expensive the upgrade but if I'm upgrading from my CS6 upgrade would it be considered an upgrade from CS5.5 9the original suite) or an upgrade from CS6?
    Thank you

You have a CS5.5 now. Now, you upgrade to CS6.
When CS6.5 come out. It will be considered as an upgrade from CS6 (and not CS5.5 which is your original suite). Hope this is clear

In DBUA mode ( in the same machine only)
1.Do we need shutdown / startup restrict the databaseNo - DBUA will do this automatically for you.
2.How can we move the files to the new locationYou can after the upgrade move the datafiles to wherever you want - use the ALTER DATABASE RENAME DATAFILE (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/statements_1004.htm#i2082829) command.
3.Can we change db_name of the databaseI do not believe this is possible with DBUA.
4.Can we use the old database as wellNo - the database will be upgraded by DBUA - there is no "old" database.

  • Upgraded a new MBP from its updated 10.7.5 to 10.8.2, but no updates to get after it?

    Hello.
I upgraded my client's new MBP from its updated 10.7.5 to 10.8.2. It appeared to be a success after the long wait (took a short nap). There are no updates found from both Software Updates and App Store? Did all the updating in 10.7.x's Software Update and App Store give me all the updates that are the same in the recently released 10.8.2? Or did something go wrong? I hope to get a yes, so I can start the users migrations and tweaks after my late lunch.
    Thank you in advance.

    No.
You have a new OS and you say you checked for more updates. Then you´re good to go. 10.7 is gone on your Mac, så don´t worry about it. BTW, all software update go through App Store now, either you check under the Apple menu or in App Store. It wouldn´t harm to verify disk/repair permissions in Disk Utility.
OK cool. I am currently migrating. Sheesh, both Macs wouldn't see each other until I found a correct network direct cable. Ugh! There is always problems. And yes, I did do a verify disk with a bootable Mac OS X 10.8.2 DVD DL (was going to do a clean install, but that got confusing and I decided to do an upgrade), and it was good.
