Question on behaviour of 'nice' command

Hello, I just noticed something a little curious which I don't fully understand, and was wondering if it was 'expected' behaviour.
This machine has 2x Xeon E5420s, so Linux registers a total of 8 CPUs. It's mostly used for heavy job loads.
I have gkrellm which monitors things in the corner and 'ts' which just stacks up batches of jobs. We stick all of these with a 'nice' prefix. Today I ran a several minute job on it that was not 'nice'd while all 8 cores were working on 'nice'd jobs. The new job got 100% of one core and 3 cores became idle. When the job finished, all four cores on that CPU begin running again.
Any suggestions on this or am I being stupid?
Thanks.

Both are true.
The VALIDATE command is to check for corrupt blocks and missing files, or to determine whether a backup set can be restored.
If the backup validation discovers corrupt blocks, then RMAN updates the V$DATABASE_BLOCK_CORRUPTION view with rows describing the corruptions. After a corrupt block is repaired, the row identifying this block is deleted from the view.
Oracle 11g,
The options in the VALIDATE command are semantically equivalent to options in the BACKUP VALIDATE command.

• "nice" command denied in terminal even as root user

Hello,
I am trying to run the "nice" command in terminal as an admin (me):
nice -n -19 /Users/Michael/Desktop/Minecraft.app
It failed with this error:
nice: /Users/Michael/Desktop/Minecraft.app: Permission denied
So I logged in a the root user and tried again and it still had the same error.
I have 2 main questions:
1, Why couldn't I run this command as a root user?
2. As an admin, shouldn't I have been able to run the command without logging in as the root user?

I hope it's ok if I bump.

• Run the "nice" command on startup?

Hi all,
Since I've experienced overheating problems, I've dug a little and discovered this wonderful "nice" command, that's currently letting me install Windows 7 on a VM thanks to VirtualBox without turning my logic board into a critter. My question is, is there a way (and a good reason) to run this command right after booting up, say via AppleScript? I haven't noticed any sluggish behavior when running this command, but right now, VirtualBox is running, and my temp censor displays readings oscillating between 60°C and 70°C, far below the 120°C I've noted yesterday, right before my MBP shut down from exhaustion...
So, how-to...?

Get more memory. My system started paging like crazy when running Virtual PC.
The point of this topic was, how do I automatize this running "nice" in Terminal. I already added Terminal to my Startup Items, but it merely opens at the prompt, and I have to manually enter "nice", then return, to enter "nice mode". Haven't thought of typing "renice" since I started using this function...
You can invoke terminal ( unix ) commands from an applescript program. I am not familiar with nice, but the following applescript file did start up Windows. I could not figure out whether or not the nice command did anything.
The first thing that you need to do is to make the text into an AppleScript program.
Start the AppleScript Editor
/Applications/AppleScript/Script Editor.app
In Snow Leopard it's at: /Applications/Utilities/AppleScript Editor
Copy the script text to the Applescript editor.
Save the text to a file as an application and do not check any of the boxes below.
If you want access to the script from your Script Menu, move the script (the saved script application file) to your
~/Library/Scripts folder. You can also drag it to your Dock or make an alias for it on the Desktop.
-- Write a message into the event log.
-- To see this output, run from script editor after clicking on Event Log tab.

       set thisString to alterString(thisString, "\\", "\\\\")
       set thisString to alterString(thisString, " ", "\\ ")
set thisString to alterString(thisString, quote, "\\" & quote)
end escapeString
on alterString(thisText, delim, replacement)

set text item delimiters to replacement
set resultString to resultList as string
set my text item delimiters to tid

• Autogroup patch 'breaks' "nice" command.

Hi all,
I just had a look how the nice command works together with the autogroup patch. (See i.e. this discussion: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=108516, or the links at the end of the post).
While the default behaviour is consistent, it is rather annoying:
Nice works only inside a group, while my processes (i.e. compilation + some foreground task) run typically in different groups.
I hope someone can explain to me, what I am doing wrong. Processes are grouped by Session ID, and I get the following behaviour:
For me process priorities work now as follows:
- run several commands with different niceness levels from the same terminal: CPU time is divided according to niceness.
- run several commands with different niceness levels from different terminals:  Every command gets the same amount of CPU.
- run several commands with different niceness levels in the same terminal, and run more processes with different niceness levels in different terminals: CPU time is first divided between the terminals evenly, and then subdivided according to niceness.
Running several commands from the GUI works the same as running from different terminals, i.e. the SID is different, and niceness is therefore ignored.
I start X and login using inittab and lxdm.
An easy 'fix' for this is disabling autogroup support:
echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/sched_autogroup_enabled
Links on autogroup patch/cgroups:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cgroups
http://lwn.net/Articles/418884/

I can no longer duplicate the problem. The patch 125285-04 has been applied. Here are the cases. For one V210 host, the command "updatemanager" was aborting in real time on Friday. I had not removed the patch 125285-04 from it. Today, I tried it Tuesday and it worked. I cannot explain why unless the reboot on Monday cleared up something.
For the host where I had unapplied patch 125285-04, I re-applied it and manually ran the command "/usr/bin/fc-cache -f". Now running the "updatemanager" works. I cannot duplicate this problem today.
I only use updatemanager on these hosts for patching. I have not tried other commands that used GUI fonts/JAVA/etc.

• Questions regarding using the .monitor command to retur a animated image and we would like feedback to a designed webpage that is monitoring a 5kW windturbine:)

I'm embedding a front panel image in an existing HTML dokument. I would like to use the command .monitor in the URL together with the refresh command so the VI automatic will reload every 20 secund. This actual work, but simultaneous I want to have the possibility to refresh manually so I don't have to wait 20 sec before new values is shown in the display. Is this possible to do?
Another question: Since the real time display updates 1-2 times a secund the command .monitor is used to get a animated picture of the Real Time Display.
There are several ways to add animation on to web pages. The techniques used h
ere are the server push and client pullwhich makes the browser repeatedly reloads a changing inline image to provide crude animated sequences. This is not the most efficient way as this results in an image being re-transmitted for each frame of the animation. The command .monitor with the attribute refresh and lifespan in the URL trigger this server push and client pull techniques.
I use this automatic refresh uploading of the display so that it each time shows different values, is this called crude animation? Then I'm wondering what I'm suppose to use the command lifespan to?I can't see the use of it in my display.....?
link to the webpage so you can have a look at the display:
http://134.7.139.176/.monitor?Real%20Time%20Performance.vi&refresh=20
This is a project that I'm working together with another Norwegian friend. WE are very happy for feedback on our web page and displays go to: http://www.ece.curtin.edu.au/~peersena/ if you would like to view itThanks

Annis,
One of the other things to keep in mind is that the generation of an image does take some computing power so having the generation and the acquistion on the same machine is not always ideal. If you're using the machine that is publishing the front panel just to collect data it's not so much of an issue.
If you really want to monitor in "Real-Time" using Remote Panels (requies LabVIEW 6.1) is your best option. This posting has more information on using Remote Panels and links to some live examples:
http://exchange.ni.com/servlet/ProcessRequest?RHIVEID=101&RPAGEID=135&HOID=506500000008000000C0660000&UCATEGORY_0=_49_%24_6_&UCATEGORY_S=0&USEARCHCONTEXT_TIER_0=0&USEARCHCONTEXT_TIER_S=0&USEARCHCONTEXT_QUESTION_0=web+control&USEARCHCONTEXT_QUESTION_S=0
Remote panels makes it possible to control the application remotely as well.
With .monitor the only way I've been able to manually refresh is to "Shift+Refresh" on the browser.

• Question about ACE show Conn command (tcp duration)

Hello,
I was checking connections and noticed that I would see the initial connection, but after a short time the connection quits showing up in the counters and the “show conn” command. However the user is still up and working.
This is the command I used:
sho conn serverfarm STAGING-HTTPS detail
The output shows all the connection info from source to destination, and in the ESTABLISHED state.
However, after maybe 2~3 minutes, when I up arrow I don't see any connection info. The web page is still up. If I refresh the web page, I do see the connections come in.
Can someone kindly point me to a document or provide an answer on how long should the connection be stored before they are flushed?
Config profile:
4 real servers
HTTPS protocol
Leastconn for predictor
sticky based on src/dst IP
Thanks,
Raman

Raman,
If you would play with a sniffer capture, you could answer the question yourself.
If the browser loads a flash object or a java applet, once it is loaded, you can still work on the page but there is no data transfer.
with a sniffer tool you could see the browser closing the connections.
The default TCP idle timeout on ACE is 1 hour.
Gilles.

• Use the nice command to set priorty

hay everyone =)
could someone please exspain to me how to use the nice/renice command in terminal to set the priority of a running app so it runs faster, i also noted that my cpu always has like 90% idle and i would like to be able to tap into that if at all possible

Hello,

Note: typing in admin password won't be reflected for security reasons, just carefully type it & hit enter.

• Unix "nice" command

I've heard it's possible to 'perma-nice' something. I tend to have a CPU-intensive app open while watching a video or something in VLC, and I use RENICE to improve VLC's performance.
But I'd rather it automatically be set to a slightly lower value. I just read on one page that the nice value of a program is adopted from the program that opened it, usually zero, but that's all the info that got me anywhere.

Is this "CPU-intensive app" really a double-clickable .app? Is it something to which you have access to the source (or is itself a shell/perl/whatever script)?
If all you have is a compiled .app bundle, I think you'll have to start it from the command-line or else write a wrapper .app in order to launch it with modified priority.
Edit: I was working on this from the "give less CPU to big-task" not "give more to interactive task" direction, because it's easier to play nice games when you have low-level access to the program code.

• Question about "Convert ID3 Tags" command

I just used "Convert ID3 Tag" to convert all the songs in a library to ID3v2.4. When it was done, abotu half the album art had been killed. I have a backup, so nothing is lost, but I did not expect this to happen. My questions: (1) Is this expected behavior or a bug?, and (2) Any ideas why some album art survived and some did not?

Thank you! I actually managed to figure it out myself before you replied.
For anyone else out there who might be interested:
Change the import settings in iTunes > Preferences > General, to Apple Lossless Encoder. Then you can select the files/albums you want to convert, and click on the Advanced menu while holding down the Options/Alt-key, and click "Create Apple Lossless Version". I found that it doesn't actually convert the existing WAV-files, but creates an Apple Lossless copy of every single file, so I had to spend some time weeding out the WAV-files afterwards. This is a one-time effort, though, as every CD will be imported as Apple Lossless from now on.
Better still, solved my problem with the album artwork!

• Few questions about sql2008 functions and commands

hello,
I am learning sql2008 implementation and maintenance,I am just 2 weeks bussy.there is some questions in my mind wich I can't answer it.
1-when I can use  USE MASTER statement
2-can a database for example (test) have many and unlimmited file groups?
3-what is the diferrence between file and filegroup! is the term of file means  tables in filegroup?
4-with boundary points does mean the data type when creating partition function!
5`what is diferrence between full text index and index, where you have to use the index and wher you have to use full text index?
6-each filegroup must have one partition or one partition can have many filegroups in partition scheme!
7-do you have to partition every scheme or not! where do you have to partition a scheme and where not?
8-can you give a little example with switch operator!
9-again do you have to partition every table and index in the real world or not!
thanks

Hi,
Let me try to answer your questions:
You need to use USE MASTER whenever you need to do some work in the MASTER database and the database context is not that.
Yes, a database can have many filegroups. Please check this article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179316.aspx
Please check this article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179316.aspx
As per BOL:
boundary_value is a constant expression that can reference variables. This includes user-defined type variables, or functions and user-defined functions. It cannot reference Transact-SQL expressions.
boundary_value must either match or be implicitly convertible to the data type supplied in
input_parameter_type, and cannot be truncated during implicit conversion in a way that the size and scale of the value does not match that of its corresponding
input_parameter_type. For more details check
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187802.aspx
For simplicity: Full-Text index is used to search in a LOB/text data in a column, index is used to speed up your queries. Please check these articles:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms142571.aspx,
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189271.aspx
As per BOL: When you create a partition scheme, you define the filegroups where the table partitions are mapped, based on the parameters of the partition function. You must specify enough filegroups to hold the number of partitions. You can specify that
all partitions map to a different filegroup, that some partitions map to a single filegroup, or that all partitions map to a single filegroup. You can also specify additional, "unassigned" filegroups in the event you want to add more partitions later. For
more info, please check
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188730.aspx
8. Please read the concept of partitioning here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190199.aspx and for SWITCH operator, please check the sliding window example at here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa964122(SQL.90).aspx
9. It depends :) but you always will have at least 1 partition!
I hope it helps.

• Question about jar command

I have a java class that has an inner class. When I compile I get two .class files that includes the .class file for the inner class.
Now I run a jar command to jar those two classes as below:
jar -cvf *.class
Notice that I skipped mentioning the jar file name. What happens now is that my inner class' .class file contents are modified.
Is this a bug with the jar utility or an expected behavior ?

If you do this in a UNIX shell, the wild card is expanded by the shell before the jar command is executed. This means that jar will use the file that happens to be the first in the list of files that *.class expands to, as its output file. The class file generated for your inner class probably is the first file in the list, and is thus overwritten by jar.
On platforms where the shell don't do this expansion, I would guess that the Java VM (used by the jar command, which is actually a Java program) probably simulates the UNIX effect by expanding the command line before passing it as arguments to the main method of the Java program being run.

• A question about the create object command

Hi, I met some problems when created type and view:
In sqlplus,
1) I first create a address_ty:
create or replace type address_ty as object
(street varchar2(50),
city varchar2(25),
state char(2),
zip number);
type created
2) Then I created a person_ty;

(name varchar2(25),
address address_ty);
type created
3) create the table customer;
create or replace table customer
(customer_id number,
person person_ty);
table created
4) create the view based on the customer table;
create view customer_0v(customer_id, person) as
select customer_id,
person_ty(name,
address_ty(street,city,state,zip))
from customer;
***There is a error message :
error at line 4: address_ty(street,city,state,zip))
invalid column name.
I think it should work but ...
5) Another question is could I insert into table customer values like this:
insert into customer values
(123,'SIGMUND','47 HAFFNER RD','LEWISTON','NJ',22222);
It does not work in my pc and give a erro message like ' too many valuesj'.
But some of books said it works.
Thanks for any help !
echo
null

Why does not the Object itself implement the interface
CloneableBecause then every object would be cloneable.

• Beginner question: adding restrictions to JOIN command?

So I'm trying to figure out how to add restrictions to JOIN commands. I've got these two tables AGENTS(aid, aname, city) and ORDERS(ordnum, cid, aid, qty, dollars). I'm trying to display all the agent names (aname) that are associated with the particular cid values 'c003' and 'c006' (the cid column contains values c001 through c006). Here is what I tried:
SQL> SELECT aname FROM agents JOIN orders ON agents.aid = orders.aid WHERE cid='003' OR cid='006';
Now I'm totally new to SQL so this may contain an obvious error, but I thought it made sense to simply put a WHERE clause at the end to place a restriction on the selection. Help would really be appreciated because I have been trying to figure out how to do this for hours.

SQL> SELECT aname FROM agents JOIN orders ON agents.aid = orders.aid WHERE cid='003' OR cid='006';You should always format your code. Use new lines and tabs to make the different clauses and the items in each clause stand out.
For example, the query below is exactly what you posted, with a little white space added:
SELECT  aname
FROM    agents
JOIN      orders          ON     agents.aid      = orders.aid
WHERE     cid = '003'
OR     cid = '006'
;When posting code, or any formatted text, on this site, type these 6 characters:
(small letters only, inside curly brackets) before and after sections of formatted text, to preserve spacing.
Now I'm totally new to SQL so this may contain an obvious error, but I thought it made sense to simply put a WHERE clause at the end to place a restriction on the selection. Help would really be appreciated because I have been trying to figure out how to do this for hours.I don't see any obvious errors.  You should get all the agents who have at least one order with either cid '003' or '006'.
If there can be many orders for the same agent, then you'll get the agent's name repeated as many times as they have orders with the given cids.  If that's so, but you want each aname to appear only once, then change "SELECT" at the very beginning to "SELECT DISTINCT".
Aside from the possible duplicates, the query above looks like a reasonable way to get from point A to point B.  Of course, if you're starting from point X and not A, and/or you want to go to point Y rather than point B, then it's not the route you want.
So where are you, and where do you want to go?
Please post a little sample data (maybe 2 to 5 rows from each table) and the results you want to get from that data.
