Question on Numbers 09, v 2.0.2

I have 3 spreadsheets and they all have at least 2 or 3 columns that have the same info, although say the name field might not be formatted the same way in all 3 sheets. But I want to have one sheet with all the info from all 3 sheets. Is this possible.
Mike

Hello,
As far as today, February 16th, the 10.1.3.2 server of the Oracle Application Server is not out, Oracle has published the Webcenter Suite that is part of the new Oracle JDeveloper 10.1.3.2.
Oralce will publish very soon the 10.1.3.2 release of the server too.
Concerning the Web Services in 10.1.3.2, is not a release with many new features, it is mainly bug fixes.
As you expecting specific new features?

  • I am questioning about Numbers?

I am questioned by numbers operating system with this statement. What is my misunderstanding?
The operator"+" expects a number, date or duration, but cell Transcations::B11 contains a string.
    Thank you

The most common cause of this error message is that you entered a Date in a format that isn't recognized by Numbers. It also can arise from typographical errors, such as adding a space or other character instead of a number. For instance, typing the letter "O" instead of the intended zero, or the letter "L" instead of the number one.

  • Rounding question in Numbers

    Why does =ROUND(16.9*2.35,2) = 39.71 instead of 39.72?

It is not a bug. I'll try to explain once again for you and whoever else might have the same question.
Numbers follows the IEEE standard for floating point math. Computers do math in base-2 (binary) with only a set number of digits of precision, not in base-10 with infinite precision like you would do on a piece of paper. If a base-10 number cannot be exactly represented in base-2 with a set number of digits, it gets rounded. Guess what that does? It creates small errors. Therefore, floating point math calculations may have small errors when compared to doing the same calcuation on a piece of paper using base-10 numbers. The important thing is that as long as the standard is followed, the same calculation will always give the same result. Consistency is very important with standards
The difference between Excel and Numbers:
Later versions of Excel "optimize" the results of the floating point math to better fit customer expectations. In other words, Excel tries to remove those small errors. Numbers does not, it follows the standard exactly. Earlier version of Excel ('95 and earlier) did not "optimize", they followed the standard.
In your example, the Excel result is what you as the customer expected.  The Numbers result is correct in accordance with the standard but it does not meet your expectations. Personally, these little errors bother me too but I do not consider the result to be "wrong" and it is certainly not a bug.
What can go wrong with "optimization":
Try these two formulas in both Excel and Numbers
    =(4/3-1)*3-1
and the exact same thing with a set of parentheses around it
    =((4/3-1)*3-1)
In Numbers you get the same IEEE standard result for both: -2.22044604925031E-16
In Excel the first one results in 0 while the second is what Numbers gave.  Oops, by straying from the standard and trying to "optimize" the results, Excel is inconsistent with itself.
    Try =(1+5/2^52)-1 in Excel
You would expect the result to be =5/2^52 which is 1.11E-15 but what Excel gives you is a big fat zero because the correct result got "optimized" away. It gives the WRONG answer. It is wrong according to your paper and pencil calculation and wrong in accordance with the standard.
Numbers gives 1.11E-15 which is the correct result.
    And yet another:
The result of =0.1-0.3+0.2 should be zero, right.
In Numbers, the result due to floating point error = 2.776E-17. This is correct in accordance with the standard but not what you would get on paper.
In Excel the result is zero, as you would have expected.
Now try =1/(0.1-0.3+0.2).  Should be infinity in Excel, right? Oops, it's not, it is 3.6E16, same as in Numbers. Excel is once again inconsistent with itself.
Bottom line: when the standard is not followed, you don't know what to expect.
I don't know what Apple will choose to do in new versions of Numbers. They may try to "optimize" like Excel (but consistently I would hope) because there are many more cases of simple calculations giving what appear to be strange answers than there are cases of small numbers getting "optimized" to zero. I would support the change.

  • Contract Generation question: Formatting, Numbering of clauses, variables

    Hi!
I am trying to create a Contract Document Template (for Contract Generation) with Variables
I created some Variable Collections, but when I link them to the Contract Template, they add on with a different formatting altogether, which is neither like the placeholder in the template nor like the template attached to the variable.
My variable configuration was of the type Paragraph.
If anyone has any helpful tips on formatting Contract Document Templates, it would be most appreciated.
Also, how do I ensure that numbering of sections and clauses is sequentially made in the final Contract.
    Regards,
    Reshma

I was able to fix the problem by making some word document format changes.
    Please ignore this question.

  • Question on Numbers Formula:

    Hello Guys,
Thanks in Advance for all those who attempt to solve my question.
I am preparing a numbers file that helps me track my expenses.
I would like to know a formula that i should apply on a table that basically sorts and populates all the entires of specific payment type from another table
The picture attached  is self explanatory of the problem that i am facing

    HI Prakash,
Looking at the received document, I see this formula in Transactions::F2:
    =IF(LEN(E)<1,"",E&COUNTIF(E,E2))
Here is the formula as shown in my post above:
    =IF(LEN(E)<1,"",E&COUNTIF($E$2:E2,E))
In the COUNTIF section, your version counts the number of times the value in E2 occurs in ALL of column E (3). That value is appended to the value in E2, to produce "Z Bank Credit Card3" in every line containing "Z Bank Credit Card" in column E.
In the version provided above, the second argument (E) returns the value in E2 (the same as E2 does in your formula)—the value to be counted.
But the first argument ( $E$2:E2 ) tells COUNTIF to restrict its count to the cell(s) from E2 to E2.
As this formula is filled down, $E$2 will remain pointed to the same cell (E2) while E2 will change to point to the column E cell in the same row as the formula. In F4, for example,  this argument will read $E$2:E4, and COUNTIF will count the number of times the value in E4 occurs in the three cells E2, E3 and E4.
The LEN() part of this formula is a switch that prevents the formula from producing an error when there is no entry in column E. As cells in column E of this table are filled by choices in a pop-up menu, and none of these choices are less than one character long, this will never happen—the formula will index "None" as it does the other values. As the index column is intended to be hidden, that will not create a problem.
On the Summary table, the formula in A3 needs two minor changes:
    A3: =IFERROR(OFFSET(Transaction :: $A$1,MATCH($A$1&ROW()-2,Transaction ::$F,0)-1,COLUMN()-1),"")
Both instances of "Transaction" must be changed to exactly match the name of your Transaction table.
$A$1 needs to be changed to $C$1 to match the location of the payment type name ( Z Bank Credit Card ) on your summary tables,
Note that the Payment type name in C1 must match exactly the Payment type name(s) used in the transactions table.
    Regards,
    Barry
PS: Noticed a couple of strange behaviours in the file you sent. In the first summary table (Z Bank...).
The row and column Reference tabs did NOT appear when I selected a cell, so I could not use them to resize the width of column A to accomodate the full dates.
Fill down (in column A) worked only one row at a time when done manually. I had to re-grab the fill handle after each move down one row.
The application hung on selecting the whole able (body rows only) and choosing fill right from the Insert menu. A small progress window opened, and the progress bar moved to about 20% completed, then stopped. Sometime later, the bar moved to 50%, but stalled again. It was still there a few hours later, and I did a force quit, then completed this post.

  • Questions about Numbers.... another newbie

I just purchased numbers.... trying to keep an accounting of a house remodel I'm doing. I managed to create a ledger sheet where I type in my receipts of purchases and then break them down into the appropriate subgroups... flooring, HVAC, paint, landscape and so on... The receipts on a lot of items purchased are these thermal cash register paper that dissolves and becomes unreadable in short order. So, question number one... can I scan these receipts, turn them into a jpg or pdf and then link the specific row for that receipt to the file on my computer so that if/when I want I could pop open that receipt to look at it? This also archives the receipt for me..... in case the thermal one is blank next year at tax time....
Question number two.... I would like a "main" ledger sheet that has all the invoices and receipts logged into it in total, beginning to end of the job. Then I would like to have a separate page/table for each month, hopefully auto filling from the "main" ledger... so as I type in a receipt, it automatically goes to the appropriate page for March, April, May.... that sort of thing.
Not sure if any of this is possible, I did search thru the archives a bit and couldn't find specific references, if this has been hashed out before... please point me to the posts and I'll go from there. Oh... total newbie to Numbers and for that matter any spreadsheet software...

    Hi Rob,
Thanks for the help.... well, I used the tilde (~) and tried changing the name to just "lowes.jpg", moved it around up and down the folder tree.... if I leave it in the "sites" folder, I am now getting a different error message:
    (403) Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /~brianlamb/Lowes.jpg on this server.
    Apache/1.3.41 Server at brian-lambs-imac-g5.local Port 80
So.... now it sounds like it's looking for it, just doesn't have the permission to see it... now, I did go into Apple system preferences, then under "Internet and Network", chose "Sharing" and set personal web sharing and personal file sharing to "on". So unless I'm needing to allow permission in some other way... I'm stumped.
Oh, and yes, I'm using 10.4.11
On edit: Holy Crap Batman! I got it to work... pulled up the lowes.jpg file in the finder and was checking... looks like at the bottom under permissions it was set to "no access" for "group" and "others", so I changed those to read and write and it's working. I can now pull up the copy of the receipt with one click.... too cool! Now all I have to do is spend a couple days scanning them all in, but once I'm caught up, weekly updates will be a snap! Thanks so much for the help.... this forum is great.... amazing!

  • MacBook Airs announced yesterday, a few questions (model numbers especially)

Hello - does anyone know the model number fot the core i7 MacBook Airs that were just announced yesterday?  I can find the model numbers for the core i5 models, but not sure if the core i7's are considered different models or are just only available as a customization options to the base models, direct from Apple?  I want to buy from Amazon since with credit card rewards points I can get about $1000 worth of Amazon gift cards - no option to convert credit card reward points to Apple Store gift cards, unfortunately.
Also, I do want to use this computer with an HDMI-enabled TV - would it be better to buy Mini-Display Port to DVI or Mini-Display Port to HDMI cable?  I currently have a DVI-to-HDMI adapter that I use in conjunction with an HDMI cable to plus my old DVI - enabled Cure 2 Duo MB Pro into my TV.
Also, most importantly, I am concerned about built in batter of all the MacBooks these days.  How much does it cost to replace, and will leaving the battery plugged in and charged all the time ruin it, or have MacBook batteries advanced beyond that limitation?

    1. i personally don't know how to properly network. i managed to do it somehow, but i don't know the exact process. i'm sure someone else can help you with this.
    2. the only way to make it less aggressive is to turn it off entirely. i never use that feature and i always adjust the brightness manually.
    3. how to make sure you have all the updates is by simply running software update. anything your computer needs to run smoothly will show up there. if no updates appear, then you're fine.
    4. the fans are located in the bottom portion of the MBP. the heat issue is normal. saying it gets really really hot doesn't give anyone any indication of what the actual temperatures are. my idea of hot is likely different from your idea of hot. your MBP is likely not running hotter than any other MBP.
    5. i think you just close the lid while it's on to do this. or just set the energy settings so that the screen shuts off after x minutes of inactivity.

  • Question about Numbers program

When sending a proposal to a client that was written using Numbers, how can I make sure the client only sees a finalized version of the documant is not able to make changes to it?

Just to be clear you can print to a pdf a couple different way:
    1) command + p (or select the menu item "File > Print...", then click the "PDF" button in the bottom, left corner:
    2) Use the export feature... select the menu item "File > Export..", then select PDF.
    (1) will allow you to select the pages to print,  (2) exports the whole doc

  • Question on Numbers Functionality

    Hello,
I am sorry if something like this was already posted - I searched and could not find it.
I just bought my first iMac (first Mac of any kind) yesterday and had iWorks preinstalled. I am a somewhat advanced Excel user, and do not want to have to load Excel on my Mac.
What I need to do is automatically generate one spreadsheet from another, parsing through data and selecting only the matching values and setting them in the new sheet or workbook. I do this with VBA Macros in Excel.
I was wondering if this is possible with Numbers? I have seen that there is no VBA type scripting support, so while I wait for my machine to arrive I was hoping to see if someone could tell me if there is a way to do this or will I need to install windows and Excel?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. I followed up with Cross Over Mac presales support and they told me Macros are not functional in Cross Over Mac.
I am going to try to use Open Office Calc for my purposes. I recreated my macros in the windows version while I wait for my iMac to arrive. Hopefully tomorrow!
I noticed another post which used applescript to export data from a spreadsheet. Is it possible to use applescript as a seperate program to access data in a Numbers Spreadsheet, and create new spreadsheets? My functionality doesn't need to be embedded in the spreadsheet itself, just needs the ability to open the spreadsheet, read the data and copy it to a new spreadsheet and format it.
    Thanks.

  • Very basic function question from numbers virgin

I have been working on a numbers table sent to me and adjusting data, need to calculate column totals but the function key on the toolbar is not 'highlighted' so I can't click on it to caluculate the sum. can't work out how to do this or find another way round it. don't want to create a new table. any advice? thanks

photogogirl, if you haven't given up yet, here is another suggestion.
Looks like that toolbar menu named Function also is not available if you have a range of cells selected that include a footer cell. The person that sent the file to you may have activated the footer row. If so, and since you said you are trying to sum columns, I would select ONLY the footer cell in the column you want to sum and then select Sum from the toolbar Function menu. Also, notice as you select single cells, you can see the underlying formula (if it exists in the selected cell) right under the toolbar. You can select any single cell and type the formula there directly if you like.
    gluck.

  • Basic question about numbers templates

    Hello
I am a new user to Numbers, and there is something that I don't understand with the templates.
When you move your mouse over the template icon, you can see the different sheets being offered for each template.
    So far so good.
For most of the templates, even the blank one, the last sheet shows a large pie chart. But it never shows up when I choose the template.
Where is the last sheet with the large pie chart?
I know I can just create a pie chart, but I'm wondering why you see this in the sheets preview for the templates, but you don't get it when you open the template.
    Thank you.

    Hi Wayne,
    Thanks for the response.
The sheet that I am talking about is this one:
As you can tell, this one is showing for the Blank template, but other templates show this too.
I never see it on the left side of the Numbers window. Why not?

  • I have a question with Numbers

    Hello!
I have a table with 2 head columns (1 with numbers and one with Names). Then there are several columns more. I want a pie chart which shows me the data yes/no of another column. This column only has the word "nein" (no) or a date to show yes. I want the pie chart to show the percentage of no in contast with the yes, which is shown as dates.
Is this possible or is there another possibility to show the contrast of yes/no in a pie chart?

Make a new table to summarize the information.  I named the table with the information (your original table to "Data").
In the new table I suggest make the first row and column headers:
    In the new table:
    B2=COUNTIF(Data :: B, "="&A2)
    B3=COUNTA(Data :: B)-B2
now select B2 and B3, then select the pie chart from the chart menu in the tool bar

  • Question about Numbers

For my monthly budget, I have a column of costs. Once one of these has been paid, I want to be able to exclude that cost from my sum at the bottom of the column. How do I do that?

You can use a column of check boxes to indicate an item is paid and then use the function SUMIF() to only add up values whose checkbox is NOT checked (FALSE).
